Todd Monken is working his greatest magic yet with Browns, Deshaun Watson
The Kyle Shanahan-Sean McVay trees have blossomed a number of notable "offensive guru" NFL coaches. That group obviously includes Shanahan and McVay themselves, and names like Matt LaFleur, Mike LaFleur, Kevin O'Connell, Liam Coen, Zac Taylor, Mike McDaniel and Klint Kubiak. Todd Monken isn't one of them, but the first-year Cleveland Browns coach should have the same acclaim as that group after the latest and perhaps greatest masterpiece of his coaching career: leading the Deshaun Watson-quarterbacked Cleveland Browns to a 3-1 start and first place in the AFC North. Monken has flashed many flourishes of brilliance. As Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator, he helped quarterback Brandon Weeden (22nd overall pick in 2012 NFL Draft ) and receiver Justin Blackmon (5th overall pick in 2012 NFL Draft) power their squad to a 23-3 record as college football's most electrifying passing tandem. In 2018, Monken worked as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator. The Buccaneers went 5-11, but it wasn't because of his offense -- Tampa Bay's defense surrendered 29 points per game, the second-most in the NFL that season. Monken cobbled together the league's No. 12 scoring offense (24.8 points per game) with a quarterback platoon of Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick . Collectively, Monken squeezed a combined 5,125 yards passing and 36 passing touchdowns out of the two of them. As the Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022, he helped quarterback Stetson Bennett go from a walk-on to a two-time national championship-winning passer across the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Yes, those Bulldogs squads had an embarrassment of NFL first-round draft picks among their defensive players in those years, but Monken's Bennett-led offenses put up the ninth-most points in college football in 2021 (38.6 points per game) and the fifth-most in 2022 (41.1 points per game). Monken's magic helped lift Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to new heights. Jackson won the 2023 NFL MVP under Monken, but the peak came the following year in 2024 when he earned first-team All-Pro honors despite finishing as the MVP runner-up to Josh Allen . Jackson completed the 2024 regular season with the following all-time production: 4,172 yards passing, a 41-4 passing-touchdown-to-interception ratio, 915 yards rushing and a 119.6 passer rating. That means Jackson finished the 2024 regular season with the following firsts, per CBS Sports Research: Jackson's 119.6 passer rating ranked as the fourth-most all-time in a season, trailing only three occurrences that resulted in NFL MVP accolades: Rodgers in 2011 (122.5) and 2020 (121.5) and Manning (121.1) in 2004. The Browns are 3-1 and in sole possession of first place in the AFC North for the first time with Deshaun Watson as their quarterback. The last time they were in first place in the division was Sept. 22, 2022, when Watson was still suspended by the NFL for his off-field legal issues . How miraculous has their 3-1 start been this season? They have won three consecutive games, all as an underdog for the first time since 2001, per CBS Sports Research, and Watson is now only the second Browns quarterback with a game-winning drive in three straight weeks since 1950. Only he and Brian Sipe in 1979 have done so as Cleveland quarterbacks in that span. Watson entered the 2026 season a broken man, on and off the football field. Watson sat out the entire 2021 season while dealing with the fallout from demanding a contract/trade and being sued over 20 times in civil court for sexual misconduct. Preseason winners, losers: Fernando Mendoza falls behind as Rams strengthen Super Bowl candidacy
NFL teams finalized their initial 53-man rosters Sunday, but the word "initial" is important. Between now and Week 1, teams will be making tweaks to their teams via waiver claims, free agent adds, injury designations and maybe even a trade or two more. After all, we saw 15(!) trades on Sunday alone. With teams finally, fully turning their attention to Week 1, we can do the same -- but not before we name the biggest winners and losers from the past month of training camp and preseason action. What more is there to say? After the Rams added one of the best defensive players of all time ( Myles Garrett ) and two cornerbacks ( Trent McDuffie , Jaylen Watson ) to address their biggest need, Aaron Donald officially un-retired on a one-year deal. Donald is now 35, but if he is even 70% of his peak self, he's still a star. Los Angeles can work him in slowly if they need to. A pass rush with Garrett, Donald, Kobie Turner , Byron Young , Braden Fiske and others is nightmare fuel for opponents. Furthermore, unlike last year, Matthew Stafford has seemingly no back concerns entering the year. And if he should miss time, both Ty Simpson and Stetson Bennett flashed in preseason action. The Ravens are another Super Bowl contender feeling good. There were positive developments on both sides of the ball, with Ja'Kobi Lane emerging as a training camp star and impressing in the preseason as well. On defense, the best news is Nnamdi Madubuike , who has worked his way back from a career-threatening neck injury to be in line to play early this season. He hasn't practiced fully yet, but Baltimore not placing him on IR shows he's trending in the right direction. Players have lauded new coach Jesse Minter, Trey Hendrickson has impressed, and even undrafted quarterback Joe Fagnano made the 53-man roster. If he can be an eventual QB2, Baltimore has unearthed another gem. Who says you can't go home? After not playing last year, Odell Beckham Jr . made the Giants ' roster. It might be pretty small. But good on him for sticking with it, through injuries, aging and many team changes. The Broncos won 14 games last year, were the AFC's No. 1 seed, and were likely a Bo Nix broken ankle away from going to the Super Bowl. And yet it seems like they've flown under the radar . The same goes for Nix, who is bunched in with Patrick Mahomes , Daniel Jones , Kyler Murray and Jayden Daniels among quarterbacks returning from injury. Nix played two series this preseason. He went 6-for-9 for 76 yards and a beautiful touchdown to RJ Harvey . He also connected with his new top weapon, Jaylen Waddle , on a 35-yarder. Courtland Sutton looked awesome in the preseason, and Pat Bryant made waves as well. Same for rookie running back Jonah Coleman . The Broncos also return one of the NFL's best offensive lines. It's all adding up for a big year for Nix. In just 34 snaps across two preseason games, De'Zhaun Stribling caught 11 passes for 109 yards. He was a surprise and much-criticized pick at No. 33 overall, but all he has done since then is impress pretty much everyone. He has impressive size (6-foot-2, 207 pounds) and YAC ability, and with Ricky Pearsall out for the season, he is likely to step in as a starter right away. He earned rave reviews from Brock Purdy . It's easy to look past it now, but many contract situations leaked into training camp. Many -- but not all -- got resolved. Running backs were big winners. Bijan Robinson signed a record-setting three-year, $66.75 million deal in early August. Jonathan Taylor got a two-year, $44 million extension a few days later. McVay said the call was made as part of the process of “continuing to get [Simpson] experience” heading into his rookie season and that the team isn’t ready to name either player as the primary backup to Matthew Stafford. “Obviously, we’ve got the reigning MVP of the league, and then we got two guys that we feel really good about,” McVay said, via the team’s website. “And if you say, ‘hey, what does that really mean?’ That’s what it means. We feel really good about those two guys. Not pigeon-holing myself into any sort of decision other than I feel really good about Stetson Bennett, feel really good about Ty Simpson.” The Rams play their opener against the 49ers in Australia in two weeks, so a decision will be coming in the near future
