Buccaneers to release Jake Browning; Jalon Daniels set to be No. 2 QB
Following an impressive training camp and appearances in all three of the team's preseason games, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will name undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels as the backup quarterback behind Baker Mayfield, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport. A true dual threat across his extended time at Kansas, Daniels ended his six-year collegiate career with 9,273 passing yards, 1,916 rushing yards, and 90 combined touchdowns. He began training camp as the fourth quarterback behind veteran Jake Browning and 2025 practice squader Connor Bazelak, but he has made plays throughout the summer and will begin his rookie season in the number two role

Jalon Daniels to start in preseason finale, making push for No. 2 job behind Baker Mayfield
The Buccaneers have scrapped their plan to have Jake Browning start at quarterback against the Jets on Friday night. Browning injured his back in a joint practice at the Jets’ facility on Wednesday and Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that he will not play in the preseason opener as a result. The Bucs said earlier in the week that Baker Mayfield will not take part in the game. Connor Bazelak and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will be the quarterback for the Bucs on Friday. Browning signed with Tampa in March and is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Mayfield as long as he’s healthy

So the Bucs are going with second-year QB Connor Bazelak and rookie Jalon Daniels, both undrafted free agents," SportsLine expert Larry Hartstein said. "The Jets will play their starters Friday, though it's unclear for how long. In last year's preseason opener, the Jets crushed the Packers 30-10. Coach Aaron Glenn played his starters in the first two preseason games last year and is expected to follow suit this August. Rookie QB Cade Klubnik, a fourth-round pick out of Clemson, has opened eyes at Jets' camp as he battles Bailey Zappe for the right to back up Geno Smith. Thanks to an aggressive offseason, the Jets possess a much deeper and more talented roster than in Glenn's debut season. Look for that depth to be on display Friday." Bet the Jets at DraftKings here and claim $150 in bonus bets after your first $5 wager as a new user : "Malik Willis has taken a step forward in practices lately and will play, along with some other starters," Hartstein said. "The Commanders also will play some starters, but there are bigger injury concerns on Washington's side. Dan Quinn went 0-3 straight-up in the preseason last year and is 7-20 all time. Miami may not get more than a few regular-season wins, but I like the Dolphins here." Bet on the Dolphins at DraftKings here and claim $150 in bonus bets after your first $5 wager as a new user : The Blue Jays are 5-2 over their last seven games, and one of those losses came in a one-run game to cover this total. They are also 8-1 with a +1.5-run spread over their last nine games. The Blue Jays are starting Shane Bieber, and Toronto has won or lost by one in five of his last six starts. The Yankees are coming off a 1-0 loss to Seattle, and they haven't covered a 1.5-run spread in any of Gerrit Cole's last six starts. The model projects the Blue Jays to cover in 66% of simulations. Back the Jets by claiming the latest BetMGM bonus code CBSSPORTS here : "New Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said some starters will play in Friday's preseason opener, though it's not clear who and for how long," Hartstein said. "Even if Tua Tagovailoa doesn't play long, I like getting a bunch of points with a Cooper Rush-led offense in Stefanski's Atlanta debut. Rush has played in 39 NFL games, starting 16, and completed 61.1 percent of his passes. The Broncos also will play their starters some, but Sean Payton had yet to clarify the situation as of Tuesday. Denver is strong at backup QB with Jarrett Stidham trying to hold off Sam Ehlinger. However, the offensive line could be an issue. Denver is down its top three centers after Michael Deiter was carted off the practice field Tuesday. The Broncos likely win, but this is too many points." Back the Falcons by claiming the latest BetMGM bonus code CBSSPORTS here : Toronto has covered this number in eight of its last nine games, and it is playing some of its best baseball of the season to climb back into the AL Wild Card race. SportsLine expert Larry Hartstein is recommending the Jets to cover against the Buccaneers, and the SportsLine Projection Model favors the Blue Jays. The article also mentions player changes for the Buccaneers, with second-year QB Connor Bazelak and rookie Jalon Daniels set to play instead of Baker Mayfield
Jake Browning was slated to start at quarterback for the Buccaneers in Thursday’s preseason game against the Jets, but those plans may have to change. Per multiple reports from Tuesday’s joint practice with the Jets, Browning had to leave the field during team drills. The quarterback was described as walking gingerly as he made his way off to meet with members of the training staff. During a post-practice press conference, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed that the plan was for Browning to start and said he didn’t have an update on his condition. “Not at this time , no,” Bowles said. Connor Bazelak replaced Browning in the practice. Rookie Jalon Daniels is the fourth quarterback in Tampa and may join Bazelak as the only available quarterbacks Thursday because Baker Mayfield will not play
