The Commanders might need to bring in additional running back options this week due to Jeremy McNichols's foot injury
The Commanders may need to add some help at running back this week. Jeremy McNichols hurt his foot in Sunday night’s win over the Eagles and head coach Dan Quinn said at a Monday press conference that there is concern about the injury being a significant one. “They’re gonna do some more scans as we get through tomorrow ,” Quinn said, via the team’s website. “But it’s enough that we’re concerned today. I’ll give you an update as it goes to Wednesday, but it’s something that the team for sure is concerned with.” Jacory Croskey-Merritt is on injured reserve and must miss at least two more games before he’ll be eligible to return in Week 11. Quinn said the two injuries make an addition “something that we’ll have to discuss” in the coming days. Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler are the healthy backs on the 53-man roster. Craig Reynolds and Devin Neal are on the practice squad
Coach Dan Quinn said Monday that McNichols has a "mid-foot" injury, while adding that the team is concerned that it's a serious issue for the running back, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reports. With Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) on IR and in line to miss at least two more games, the Commanders may need add RB depth behind Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler in the coming days. In addition to the possibility of adding a free agent backfield option, the team also has Devin Neal and Craig Reynolds on the practice squad
McNichols will miss the rest of the season, elevating White and Ekeler to top RB spots
Austin Ekeler carried the ball eight times for 36 yards and ran in a two-point conversion in a 27-10 win over the Eagles in Week 8. Ekeler averaged 4.5 yards per carry but was surprisingly not targeted in the passing game in the win. The veteran running back could see a larger role in Week 9 vs. the Rams as Jeremy McNichols (foot) left Sunday's game with a foot injury and did not return
McNichols exits Week 8 with foot injury, status unclear for Week 9
McNichols headed back to the locker room in the second half of Sunday's game against the Eagles and was walking with a limp, Tashan Reed of The Washington Post reports. McNichols was checked for an injury in the blue tent before heading to the locker room. While the exact nature of his injury has yet to be clarified, the running back can be considered questionable to return after rushing five times for 21 yards and catching his lone target for seven yards prior to exiting. Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler are the two remaining healthy options in Washington's backfield rotation
Washington Commanders running back Jeremy McNichols (foot) is considered questionable to return during Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. McNichols was forced to exit during the second half of this game due to a foot issue, and it's unclear if he'll be able to finish out this game. Before leaving, McNichols carried the ball five times for 21 yards and also hauled in one pass for seven additional yards through the air. If he's unable to return, Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler will see a slight uptick in workload over the final quarter of this game
Drops: Jeremy McNichols
Jeremy McNichols was activated from IR and could see a role in the Commanders' backfield with Jacory Croskey-Merritt injured. McNichols is expected to share carries with Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler and may handle short-yardage and early-down work, offering touchdown-dependent upside in a favorable Week 8 matchup against the Eagles
McNichols accrued five rushes for 13 yards during Monday's 23-17 loss to the 49ers. With Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) sidelined, the Commanders turned to Rachaad White to do most of the heavy lifting at the running back position. McNichols, who was activated from injured reserve ahead of the Week 6 meeting with the 49ers after missing the first five games of the 2026 campaign, logged 12 offensive snaps, five more than Austin Ekeler (seven). However, neither McNichols nor Ekeler got anything going, with both players combining for six carries. With Croskey-Merritt now on injured reserve, there is room for others to step up, though it's likely White will remain the workhorse, with Ekeler and McNichols getting the leftover scraps
Washington Commanders running back Rachaad White got into the end zone on Monday Night Football against San Francisco, finishing with a team-high seven carries for 27 rushing yards and adding four catches for 30 receiving yards and his touchdown. With Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) sidelined, White led the backfield timeshare, playing 69% of snaps compared to just 18% for Jeremy McNichols and 10% for Austin Ekeler. He and the Commanders have a bye in Week 7 before returning on Sunday Night Football for a matchup with the Eagles in Week 8. If Croskey-Merritt is out, White is a strong FLEX option, and he will likely remain the preferred third-down option even after Croskey-Merritt returns. If he's available in your league and you need running back depth down the road, stashing him going into the bye week is a very solid strategy to consider
Commanders put Jacory Croskey-Merritt on IR, activate three players
The Commanders activated Jeremy McNichols from injured reserve
Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) is being placed on Injured Reserve due to a groin issue, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Croskey-Merritt was already ruled out for Washington's Week 6 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football and will now miss at least through Week 10. Across five games in 2026, the 25-year-old had recorded 67 carries for 239 yards and two touchdowns while splitting backfield work with veteran Commanders back Rachaad White. Croskey-Merritt's lack of pass-game involvement limited his fantasy upside, but he was largely Washington's preferred option on early downs. With Croskey-Merritt sidelined, Washington's backfield now looks like a true committee between White, Austin Ekeler, and Jeremy McNichols, whom the team activated from the Injured Reserve on Monday
Rachaad White is poised for an increased workload on Monday against the 49ers due to Jacory Croskey-Merritt's absence. Despite a limited practice, White carries no injury designation. While Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols present potential competition, White remains a viable RB2/flex option, especially in PPR formats, though his ceiling is somewhat uncertain due to recent production
Commanders list Stefon Diggs, eight others as questionable for Monday's game against 49ers
McNichols (quadriceps) is questionable for Monday night's game against the 49ers. McNichols was a full practice participant this week but remains on injured reserve, though the Commanders could still choose to activate him ahead of Monday night's contest. With Jacory Croskey-Merritt (foot) out, the Commanders could use McNichols as depth alongside Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler
Washington Commanders running back Rachaad White could have an opportunity to lead the team's backfield in Week 6 with Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) ruled out. White was also present on the injury report this week with a shoulder injury, though he is expected to play after returning to the field in Week 5. White should be expected to share responsibilities with Austin Ekeler (chest), who is also banged up with a chest injury, as well as possibly Jeremy McNichols (quad), who is eligible to be activated off of injured reserve. White's efficiency as a runner has limited his fantasy upside at times, but he is a strong pass catcher and should benefit from running alongside a healthy Jayden Daniels. San Francisco has been exploitable on the ground this season, and opposing running backs are top 10 in PPR points per game against them, giving White legitimate flex appeal for a potential shootout on Monday night
McNichols (quadriceps) was a full participant in Friday's practice. McNichols has opened Week 6 prep with back-to-back full practices, which indicates that the veteran running back is in the final stages of his recovery from a quad injury that caused him to open the regular season on injured reserve. He would need to be activated from IR in order to be eligible to play against the 49ers on Monday. McNichols' return could be a crucial one for the Commanders, whose backfield is dealing with injuries to Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin), Rachaad White (shoulder) and Austin Ekeler (chest)
