With Graham Mertz out for the season with a torn ACL, the Texans have signed a quarterback
With Graham Mertz out for the season with a torn ACL, the Texans have signed a quarterback. Houston announced on Saturday that the club has added veteran Brett Rypien. Rypien, 30, was most recently with the Vikings last year. But he also spent time with the Bengals and Colts in 2025. He’s appeared in 11 career regular-season games, completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 950 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions. Additionally, Houston announced the club has placed Mertz and running back Joshua Pitsenberger on injured reserve, officially ending their respective seasons
The San Francisco 49ers are expected to eventually move on from disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk , though they have yet to actually do so. Aiyuk is making it abundantly clear he would like to continue his NFL career with the Washington Commanders , as he communicated in an Instagram story he posted on Father's Day. "Go Commanders! Go Commanders! Go Commanders!" Aiyuk chanted with a smile. "Raise Hail! Take Command!" Aiyuk also posted a picture of former Washington quarterback Mark Rypien holding up the Lombardi Trophy after the team beat the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl 26. The Instagram post was the latest in a long line of grievances Aiyuk has publicly aired as the 49ers have kept him on their 90-man roster despite expressing an intention to part with him . In previous posts, Aiyuk referred to the 49ers as "stupid" and "scared" without mentioning the team by name. He has also made repeated appeals to the Commanders in his posts, even wearing a Washington hat during one of his videos. That Aiyuk would want to play for the Commanders is sensible. He has a couple of connections to the team and could fill a need for the squad – provided he eventually does hit the open market. Here are four reasons Aiyuk would be a good fit for the Commanders. OT Tytus Howard: Traded to Cleveland Browns (previous team: Houston Texans) CB Trent McDuffie: Traded to Los Angeles Rams (previous team: Kansas City Chiefs) RB David Montgomery: Traded to Houston Texans (previous team: Detroit Lions) WR DJ Moore: Traded to Buffalo Bills (previous team: Chicago Bears) OT Tytus Howard: Traded to Cleveland Browns (previous team: Houston Texans) OT Tytus Howard: Traded to Cleveland Browns (previous team: Houston Texans) CB Trent McDuffie: Traded to Los Angeles Rams (previous team: Kansas City Chiefs) RB David Montgomery: Traded to Houston Texans (previous team: Detroit Lions) WR DJ Moore: Traded to Buffalo Bills (previous team: Chicago Bears) Even if the Commanders are confident in third-round rookie Antonio Williams developing into a quality slot option, the team's No. 2 receiver battle leaves a lot to be desired. Presently, Washington appeared to be holding an open competition between Treylon Burks , Dyami Brown , Van Jefferson , Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane to occupy that role. Only one member of that group, Jefferson, has ever posted more than 444 receiving yards in a season – which came in 2021 when he logged 802 receiving yards. Jefferson hasn't come close to reaching that mark in four seasons since. By comparison, Aiyuk has averaged just under 1,061 receiving yards per 17 games played and has posted 1,000-yard seasons in each of his last two fully healthy seasons. Getting that type of proven production across from McLaurin could go a long way toward making Jayden Daniels ' life easier as he looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2025 season. Speaking of Daniels, he and Aiyuk have before played together. The duo overlapped for one season together at Arizona State, when Daniels was a true freshman starter and Aiyuk was a senior. Aiyuk enjoyed the best season of his college career playing with Daniels, posting 65 catches for 1,192 yards and eight touchdowns. His strong performance helped him become a first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. Aiyuk has made it clear he would relish a chance to rekindle his on-field relationship with Daniels. By comparison, the 25-year-old quarterback has stayed diplomatic when asked about Aiyuk's communicated desires to join the Commanders. "That is my brother and we have a personal relationship," Daniels told reporters of Aiyuk in May . "His football future, that’s out of my control.” Still, one would imagine Daniels would welcome bringing in a familiar face to be his No. 2 receiver. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has intensified his offseason drama with the San Francisco 49ers by posting a social media video of himself chanting 'Go Commanders.' This action, along with sharing a picture of former Commanders quarterback Mark Rypien, suggests Aiyuk desires a trade to Washington to reunite with his former college teammate Jayden Daniels. The situation highlights significant tension between Aiyuk and the 49ers, which has been ongoing since the 2024 offseason
