The 49ers didn’t see much of Curtis Rourke in the preseason as he missed the final two games with fractured ribs. They saw enough of him, though, to keep him as their third quarterback. The 49ers are releasing Adrian Martinez, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports, which leaves Rourke behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. Rourke started the team’s first preseason game and went 12-of-14 for 101 yards while rushing for 14 yards on three carries. He broke three ribs during the game, forcing his exit and sending him to the hospital. He is expected to return to practice this week. Martinez appeared in all three preseason games, completing 36-of-68 passes for 346 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while rushing eight times for 35 yards and one score

The 49ers shared an update on quarterback Kurtis Rourke on Friday morning. Rourke was taken to the hospital after suffering a rib injury in Thursday night’s game against the Titans because he was having trouble breathing. The 49ers announced that Rourke was checked out and released later in the evening. Rourke was a seventh-round pick in 2025 and he spent his rookie year on the non-football injury list as he recovered from a torn ACL he suffered in his final season at Indiana. Rourke started on Thursday and went 12-of-14 for 101 yards before being forced out of the game. Adrian Martinez played the rest of the way with Brock Purdy and Mac Jones getting the night off

49ers QB Kurtis Rourke taken to hospital for tests after struggling to breathe
49ers quarterback Kurtis Rourke was taken to the hospital as a precaution after suffering a rib injury in Thursday night’s preseason opener. Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Rourke’s injury is not believed to be serious, but any time a player struggles to breathe the medical staff wants to be cautious. “They said ribs, he was struggling to breathe so they took him to the hospital just to check on him and make sure he’s alright. X-rays in here didn’t show it was broken,” Shanahan said. “They just wanted to get more imaging and find out, so they weren’t too concerned. I don’t want to downplay it but I don’t want to overplay it either.” Rourke completed 12 of 14 passes for 101 yards before leaving the game. “He looked good. Got the ball to the right spot, played well,” Shanahan said. The only other quarterback in uniform for the 49ers on Thursday night was Adrian Martinez, who completed 16 of 30 passes for 159 yards after Rourke left. Shanahan said that if Martinez had been injured and the 49ers had been left without any quarterbacks, tight end Brayden Willis would have played quarterback the rest of the game and the 49ers would have only called handoffs
