Commanders' OT madness leaves players in awkward spot
The aftermath of Sunday’s overtime disaster from the Commanders will resonate for the remainder of the 2026 season, and perhaps beyond. Especially because it forced the players to answer for the malpractice of the coaches. And it was malpractice. First and 10 from the Giants’ 26 with 55 seconds to play and no timeouts. A run, followed by a lackadaisical effort to start the next play, which began with 12 seconds left. Then came another run, with no individual or collective awareness that the precious few remaining seconds of overtime were slipping away. Coach Dan Quinn, who was ultimately responsible for the debacle, answered for it after the game. Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who could have recognized what was happening and thrown the ball into the dirt to kill the clock, answered for it, too. Plenty of other players had to answer for something that wasn’t their fault. Tight end Ben Sinnott, for example, was caught in an awkward spot when pressed for details in the locker room after the game. “I run onto the field,” Sinnott said, via Scott Abraham of 7 News DC. “I get the play call and we execute the play.” Did Sinnott know the Commanders were out of timeouts? “Exactly how it went, right as I said,” Sinnott replied. “ No comment .” No comment is needed. It was objectively awful. This is the NFL, not Pop Warner. And it was a division game in the NFC East. The Commanders had a chance to kick a potential game-winning field goal, and they froze up. They glitched. They handled the situation as poorly as they could have handled it. I know it sounds harsh, but Quinn should not be employed at this time tomorrow. Only clear and unequivocal accountability will wash the stench of what happened on Sunday away. Any other outcome will cause the confusion, the doubt, and the resentment to linger. Former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is the running backs coach. Put him in charge and give him a chance to earn the job for 2027. Whether the players will admit it — to themselves or to anyone else — they’ll be checking out, consciously or not, when it comes to anything Quinn has to say moving forward. And Daniels isn’t blameless, either. Yes, he’s a potential franchise quarterback. But true franchise quarterbacks overcome random acts of dysfunction. When the coaching staff fails, the franchise quarterback finds a way to protect the franchise. Daniels’s failure to take charge of the situation potentially disqualifies him from holding the title of “franchise quarterback,” and it could make it even harder for him to ever earn it, in the eyes of his teammates

Jayden Daniels was a limited participant in practice again on Thursday
Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels said on Thursday that he’s taking things day by day in his return from a dislocated left elbow and his status on the team’s injury report remained the same as it was on Wednesday. Daniels was a limited participant for the second straight day. Daniels will wear a brace on his left arm and said on Thursday that it has no negative impact on his ability to play. He also said it gave him confidence that he can avoid the kind of repeat injury that helped sink his 2025 season. The entire Commanders injury report remained the same as it was on Wednesday. Running back Rachaad White (shoulder), guard Sam Cosmi (concussion, throat), and safety Nick Cross (illness) missed practice for the second straight day. Cosmi and Cross did not travel to London and have already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Colts. Center Nick Allegretti (hip), safety Percy Butler (concussion), defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (back, shoulder), linebacker Frankie Luvu (groin), tight end Chig Okonkwo (hamstring), defensive end Charles Omenihu (ankle), offensive lineman Lucas Patrick (foot), cornerback Amik Robertson (knee), and tight end Ben Sinnott (rib) were listed as limited along with Daniels

John Bates Could See a Larger Role in Commanders Offense
Across his first two games of 2026, Washington Commanders tight end John Bates has recorded just two catches for 13 yards on three targets. However, the 28-year-old could see more playing time in his team's Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Commanders TE1 Chig Okonkwo (hamstring) is set to miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury. While Bates was not heavily utilized in Week 2, Washington got uninspiring production from the tight end duo of Ben Sinnott and Colson Yankoff. Commanders push back on narrative they abandoned Jayden Daniels
Commanders franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels was injured on the final play of the first half. As team medical personnel worked on his dislocated left elbow, Daniels’ teammates were seen on the Fox broadcast walking by him toward the locker room. Commanders players pushed back against the social media narrative that they abandoned their quarterback. “ It’s bullshit what people are saying,” Washington left tackle Brandon Coleman said, via John Keim of ESPN. “Jay’s our guy, and he’s been our guy. There’s no malice behind it.” Many players stayed on the sideline watching Daniels being attended to, per Keim, and many returned to his side after trainers popped Daniels’ elbow back in place. Coach Dan Quinn said what actually happened was the “opposite” of the narrative that grew from Fox’s short clip. “When the half is over, the referees are saying, ‘Man, I can’t delay the half. They can’t stay on the field,’ The players were like, ‘No, we want to stay,’” Quinn said. “So it’s just the opposite of that. They were gutted. They love this guy. So halftime was hard and emotional in that space.” Coleman and lineman Josh Conerly Jr. were the last players to leave for the locker room, along with Quinn and backup quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Athan Kaliakmanis. “All that stuff is ridiculous,” tight end Ben Sinnott said. “As far as the love and brotherhood we have for Jayden, it’s really strong. We’ve seen how hard he worked to get to where he’s been. “It was a weird situation. People were trying to figure out what’s going on, and they wanted to give the trainers space to do it. You don’t want to crowd the guy. Obviously, guys are taking a step back and giving him space, praying, and we all came back. “All that stuff is nonsense.”

Dan Quinn: All players on 53-man roster cleared to play Week 1
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn delivered some positive injury news on Friday. Via multiple reporters, Quinn said in his press conference that everyone on the 53-man roster is cleared to play against the Eagles in Week 1. That means outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson (knee), outside linebacker Odafe Oweh (calf), and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) are all expected to play after being limited in practice for the first two days of the week.
