Chargers put Trey Lance on injured reserve, make several other roster moves
The Chargers announced a flurry of roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Broncos, including quarterback Trey Lance’s move to injured reserve. Lance had already been ruled out for this week with a groin injury and he will miss at least four games as a result of Saturday’s move. DJ Uiagalelei will be Justin Herbert’s backup. The Chargers also placed offensive lineman Trevor Penning on injured reserve. They put left tackle Rashawn Slate on the list Friday, which left them with three open spots on the active roster. Fullback Scott Matlock and offensive lineman Branson Taylor will fill two of them after being activated from injured reserve. Wide receiver Theo Wease was signed off of the practice squad to fill the remaining slot. The Chargers elevated offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and cornerback Isas Waxter from the practice squad to round out the day’s moves. Both players will revert back after the game against Denver

Trey Lance Placed on Injured Reserve with Groin Injury
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Trey Lance (groin) has been placed on injured reserve, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. Lance had already been listed as doubtful to play in Week 5. His placement on IR not only rules him out for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos, but it will also keep him sidelined through Week 9 at the earliest. The 26-year-old quarterback had yet to play a snap this year, and he finished last season with just 57 pass attempts, 17 rushing attempts, and four games played. His absence clears the way for DJ Uiagalelei, who had been a healthy scratch through the first four games, to suit up as Los Angeles' backup quarterback behind Justin Herbert

The Chargers will not have safety Derwin James today against the Seahawks. James is inactive with his hamstring injury after being listed as questionable. The other four players the Chargers listed as questionable are dressed. Backup quarterback Trey Lance (groin), wide receiver Ladd McConkey (foot), safety Elijah Molden (hamstring) and cornerback Donte Jackson (concussion) are active. The team’s other inactives are quarterback Dj Uiagalelei, offensive lineman Alex Harkey, offensive lineman Kayode Awosika (fibula), tight end Charlie Kolar (forearm), wide receiver Brenen Thompson (quadriceps) and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson (hamstring). Uiagalelei will serve as the emergency third quarterback. The Seahawks will not have safety Ty Okada for a fourth consecutive game due to a hamstring injury. The team listed him as questionable. Rodney Thomas II will start for Okada again. Cornerback Avery Smith, linebacker Chazz Surratt (calf), wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr., tight end Nick Kallerup, nose tackle Brandon Pili and quarterback Jalen Milroe are the other inactives. DJ Moore will play for the Bills on Sunday
Bills wide receiver DJ Moore hurt his shoulder in a Week 2 win over the Lions, but he had more than a week to recover from the injury and that was enough time for him to get cleared for action. Moore is active for the Bills as they try to move to 3-0 on the season at home against the 0-2 Chargers. The Bills will also get defensive tackle Ed Oliver back in the lineup. Oliver missed the Lions game after injuring his hip in pregame warmups and was listed as questionable along with Moore and wide receiver Keon Coleman. Coleman is also active for Buffalo while backup quarterback Trey Lance is active for the Chargers. DJ Uiagalelei was summoned from the practice squad as insurance after Lance was listed as questionable, but there will be no change behind Justin Herbert. Pipkins, who was ruled out for Week 3 with a knee injury, will miss at least the next four games. With Kayode Awosika (fibula) also ruled out, Trevor Penning will start at left guard. In a corresponding move, the team signed quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to the active roster. In addition, the Chargers elevated tight end Patrick Herbert and outside linebacker Caleb Murphy from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. Backup quarterback Trey Lance popped up on Friday’s injury report as questionable, prompting the Chargers to sign Uiagalelei to the active roster. He will backup Justin Herbert against the Bills if Lance is unavailable. The Chargers are hurting at tight end with injuries to David Njoku and Charlie Kolar, so Patrick Herbert will add depth. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh remains undecided about who quarterback Justin Herbert’s backup will be when the regular season starts. After the Chargers lost to the 49ers on Thursday night, Harbaugh said Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei are in a close competition to be QB2, and neither one has done enough to separate himself yet. “I think it’s tight. I don’t have a definitive status on it right now,” Harbaugh said. Uiagalelei completed seven of 15 passes for 80 yards, with one touchdown. Lance completed 10 of 16 passes for 73 yards, with no touchdowns. Neither quarterback had a turnover. Lance showed off his tremendous athleticism with a 37-yard run against his former team, but he still looks like a player who relies on his athletic talents and hasn’t learned to be a complete quarterback. Overall, Harbaugh was just disappointed in the performance of his offense. “Some good, some of the better plays were called back for illegal formation or two guys in motion, just sloppy pre-snap, post-snap,” Harbaugh said. “Kind of hard to evaluate the quarterbacks when errors are taking place.”
