Altmyer completed 13 of 22 passes for 130 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Thursday's 16-14 preseason loss to the Bengals. He also rushed four times for one yard, ran in a two-point conversion and lost a fumble. Altmyer played most of the game in his NFL debut, but the undrafted rookie out of Illinois didn't help his chances of winning the second spot on Detroit's QB depth chart. Quarterback Josh Dobbs is officially a member of the Lions. Word that Dobbs would be joining the team came on Sunday and the move was announced on Monday afternoon. Defensive tackle Aidan Keanaaina was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move. The Lions moved to sign Dobbs after Teddy Bridgewater informed them that he was retiring. Dobbs now steps into the No. 2 role behind Jared Goff with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer on hand as the team’s third quarterback. Dobbs appeared in four games as a reserve for New England last season. He started games for the 49ers, Cardinals, Vikings and Titans in previous NFL stops. Keanaaina signed with the Lions after going undrafted earlier this year

A rocket scientist is heading to the Motor City. With quarterback Teddy Bridgewater leaving the team (he has already been placed on the reserve/retired list), the Lions will fill the void by signing veteran Josh Dobbs. Per NFL Network, Dobbs will get a one-year $1.425 million deal with $475,000 guaranteed. He’ll arrive as the likely No. 2 to Jared Goff. The only other quarterback on the Lions roster is Luke Altmyer, an undrafted free agent who played last year at Illinois. Dobbs, 31, was a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2017. He also has spent time over the last 10 seasons with the Jaguars, Browns, Titans, Cardinals, Vikings, 49ers, and Patriots. In 2022, he spent 16 days on the Lions’ practice squad before being signed to Tennessee’s active roster. Dobbs has played in 27 regular-season games, with 15 starts
The Lions need a new backup quarterback. Teddy Bridgewater has informed the club that he’s going to step away, with retirement likely. Bridgewater had not attended the last two practices. “ Teddy Bridgewater is going to step away ,” head coach Dan Campbell said in his Sunday press conference. “I’ve known Teddy a long time and, man, the human being is unbelievable — certainly the player. Everything that he’s about, the type of teammate he is, the way that he prepares, [he] always played the game up here, and had a huge heart. He’s going to be missed. “So, I’ll never forget 2019 [with the Saints] when Drew [Brees] got injured — we’d just gone out to the Rams, got beat out there, and Drew got his thumb, and we lost him for five weeks. And Teddy stepped in, we won five in a row, man. That was Teddy. And just his time being with us [with the Lions] meant a lot and it meant a lot to our guys. So, he’s going to be missed.” Campbell added that he thinks this time Bridgewater will stay retired. “His biggest worry was letting us down,” Campbell said. “That’s the type of guy he is. And he’s not.” But that means the Lions do now need a backup quarterback, as the only other QB on the roster aside from starter Jared Goff is undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer. “We’re going to add somebody,” Campbell said. “We like Luke. Luke is growing, he’s getting better. He just needs reps. He needs a million reps. With the reps that he has gotten at this point, he has improved. So, we like him. “But we are going to add somebody, and we’d like to add a veteran quarterback. We’re hoping maybe something happens tomorrow. We’ll see. But, yeah, that’s the plan.” Bridgewater signed with the Lions on a one-year deal back in March. He was previously with the club in 2023 and 2024 before spending the 2025 season with Tampa Bay. The No. 32 overall pick of the 2014 draft, Bridgewater appeared in 83 games with 65 starts, accumulating a 33-32 record as a starter. He appeared in games for Minnesota, New Orleans, Carolina, Denver, Miami, Detroit, and Tampa Bay

Altmyer is set to receive a ton of No. 2 reps after former Lions backup Teddy Bridgewater stated he is likely retiring. Altmyer, an undrafted free agent out of Illinois, is set to compete with whichever veteran backup the Lions bring in. The quarterback completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards and 22 touchdowns, throwing just five interceptions, over 13 games in his final collegiate season. He also added 242 rushing yards for five touchdowns on the ground during the campaign with more than 100 attempts
