With the NFL season heading into Week 9, we are officially halfway through the year, which makes right now the perfect time to hand out some midseason awards. Actually, I'm only handing out one award, and it's going to me, and I don't even want it: It's the award for worst picker from Week 8. I went 8-6 last week, which ended up being the worst record out of our experts here at CBS Sports in Week 8. I clearly spent way too much time trying to find a Halloween costume and not enough time researching my picks. Next year for Halloween, I'm going to go as someone who's good at picks, so I guess I'll be dressing up as Jamey Eisenberg. Eisnenberg, who is our long-time NFL fantasy analyst here, might want to just make NFL picks full time because he went 12-2 last week. Also, he's 69-49-3 against the spread this year. I might have to copy his picks this week. So will I actually copy Jamey's picks? Probably not, but let's get to the picks and find out for sure. Actually, before we get to the Week 9 picks, here's a quick reminder that you can check out the weekly picks from every CBSSports.com NFL expert by clicking here . Also, as you probably know by now -- because I point it out every week -- I'm in charge of the NFL newsletter here at CBSSports.com. If you want to subscribe, all you have to do is click here and enter your email address . I'm going to eat one piece of my six-year-old's Halloween candy every time someone signs up. My dentist is going to love this. Speaking of things we love, let's get to the picks. If you had asked me at 10 a.m. ET on Nov. 1 who was going to win this game, I probably would have picked the Ravens , but a few things have happened since then: Those two injuries mean the Ravens will likely go into this game with an undrafted rookie ( Joe Fagnano ) as their starting quarterback, but that's not even a guarantee because he's dealing with an ankle injury. The Ravens literally might have to run the wishbone offense on Thursday. You have to be desperate to run the wishbone and I think the Ravens are there. Bill Walsh actually implemented for a game in 1987 when he had to use a replacement quarterback while the regular players were on strike. October 5, 1987 Bill Walsh Employs the Wishbone In the second half of the first MNF game to feature "replacement players" during the 1987 players' strike, the 49ers legendary head coach utilizes the "wishbone" offense against the Giants and head coach Bill Parcells. Walsh —… pic.twitter.com/EoXESclJi1 The Ravens could also run the wing-T. Basically, any offense from 1934 would work at this point. They could even call the Buccaneers ' for a few tips. They just won a game without throwing a single pass. The Ravens might have to do that this week. So the Ravens don't even know who their starting QB will be this week, and to make matters worse, they have to face what might be the best team in the AFC. If Week 8 was any indication, the Jaguars have finally figured out how to run the ball again and when they run the ball, they're virtually unbeatable. Since Liam Coen took over as head coach, the Jags are 10-1 when they rush for at least 110 yards and they did that in Week 8 by rushing for a season-high 183 yards in a 42-7 win over the Colts . When the Jaguars can run the ball, that takes some pressure off of Trevor Lawrence and he seems to thrive in those situations. In Week 8, Lawrence completed just 10 passes, but he threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns while finishing with a 153.3 passer rating. Do you want to know how absurd that is? Those stats made Lawrence the first player in 55 years to finish with at least 200 passing yards, three touchdown passes and a passer rating of 150-or-higher on 10 completions or fewer. The last player to pull that off was Roger Staubach and he did that while playing for the Cowboys in 1971. Did I mention that the Cowboys won the Super Bowl that year? Because the Cowboys won the Super Bowl that year. I'm not saying the Jags are g [... truncated ...]
Joe Fagnano's ankle injury update
The Ravens know Lamar Jackson (right thumb) and Tyler Huntley (toe) won’t play Thursday night. They hope third-string rookie Joe Fagnano will. Fagnano, who played 40 snaps in his debut after Jackson and Huntley left with injuries Sunday, has an ankle injury. The Ravens listed him as a limited participant in their walk-through practice. “To Joe’s credit, he’s kind of fighting through a couple things he’s dealing with,” coach Jesse Minter said Monday. “But expect him to have a chance to play on Thursday.” The Ravens signed quarterback Austin Reed to their practice squad on Monday. The Ravens, who play the Jaguars on Thursday, listed defensive lineman Calais Campbell (rest), safety Jaylinn Hawkins (knee) and kicker Tyler Loop (right groin) as non-participants. Jake Moody is in line to kick for the Ravens on Thursday night. Outside linebacker Trey Hendrickson (ribs/finger), running back Justice Hill (groin), offensive guard Vega Ioane (knee), nose tackle John Jenkins (knee), offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten (ankle), offensive guard John Simpson (back), linebacker Roquan Smith (foot) and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley (rest/toe/ankle) were estimated as limited. Tight end Matthew Hibner (hand), running back Adam Randall (neck) and cornerback Nate Wiggins (stringer) were full participants
The Ravens are short on healthy quarterbacks with Thursday’s game against the Jaguars on the horizon. Lamar Jackson is headed to injured reserve with a thumb injury that requires surgery and could end his season. Tyler Huntley had to leave Sunday’s game as well and is dealing with a toe injury that has Joe Fagnano in line to make his first NFL start. Fagnano’s availability sounds like less than a sure thing, however. He took a low hit from Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver in the second half of the Ravens loss and head coach Jesse Minter didn’t commit to him making the start this week. “We’re kinda working through some things,” Minter said. “To Joe’s credit, he’s kinda fighting through a couple things. Expect him to have a chance to play Thursday.” The Ravens signed Austin Reed to their practice squad on Monday and he could find himself in the mix for playing time during his first days with the team
The Ravens have signed Austin Reed to their practice squad, replacing fullback Lucas Scott
The Ravens ' quarterback situation went from disappointing to dire to destitute in a hurry Sunday. In his return from an ankle injury that cost him three games, Lamar Jackson suffered a thumb injury that will require potentially season-ending surgery on Baltimore's first offensive play, and backup Tyler Huntley left shortly thereafter with a toe injury. That left the Ravens with emergency third quarterback Joe Fagnano , an undrafted rookie . He went 10-for-21 for 91 yards and an interception, looking very much like an undrafted rookie, as the Ravens went down quietly, 36-10, against the Bills . What looked like a chance to turn the season around now looks like a game that could end Baltimore's season, for all intents and purposes. The Ravens are 4-4 and have lost three straight. Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Huntley will miss extended time with turf toe, a bothersome injury that can last for weeks. The Ravens have little time to wallow. They play the Jaguars on Thursday night. Currently, Baltimore has one available quarterback on its active roster (Fagnano), and even he was in discomfort late after taking several big hits. The Ravens don't have another quarterback on their active roster or practice squad; Skylar Thompson is on IR. So where does Baltimore go from here at the position? There are many factors to consider. Regardless of whether the Ravens can continue to contend or not — and it's very much looking like the latter — they owe it to all parties involved to get a quarterback. They owe it to the rest of the team, which is still fighting. Baltimore is 4-4, which isn't good, but isn't completely out of it. It's not as if the team is dead in the water, just trying to finish out a completely lost season. There's still Derrick Henry and Zay Flowers on offense and plenty of stars on defense. If there's any hope Jackson can return on the sooner end of the recovery spectrum, Baltimore's players deserve a chance to keep their season afloat. They owe it to coach Jesse Minter and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, the latter of whom has been excellent this year. Forcing Minter, a first-year head coach, to resort to an undrafted rookie free agent would be extremely difficult. Since 2000, only one team with a rookie head coach has started an undrafted rookie quarterback in multiple games: the Jets with Brady Cook last year. The Ravens do not want to resemble the Jets whatsoever. They owe it to Fagnano, too. He is a really nice story, someone who started his college career as a walk-on at FCS program Maine and finished it with a superb seventh-year senior season at UConn. He earned a spot on the roster with a stellar showing at rookie tryouts, then throughout the early offseason, and then in training camp and the preseason. But to stick him with an extended starting role would be unfair to him, just as it would be for Minter and Doyle. And the bottom line is the Ravens have to add someone . They can't have one quarterback on the active roster. Austin Reed makes sense as a temporary solution to join Fagnano, as he was at least with the team this offseason, but he has never taken an NFL snap. Unfortunately, it's not like capable quarterbacks grow on trees. There's a shortage of passable starting quarterbacks, much less backups or backups to backups. But that doesn't mean it would be impossible to find one. Rapoport said he'd expect the Ravens to consider quarterback trades. Two names he floated were Bears backup Tyson Bagent and Cardinals recently benched starter Jacoby Brissett . Bagent, 26, makes sense for a few reasons. First and foremost, he was with Doyle in Chicago last year. Second, it's unclear whether he's even Caleb Williams ' primary backup right now. He performed decently in a win over the Jets earlier this year but struggled badly in a loss to the Packers the following week. Overall, he has zero passing touchdowns and three interceptions in three games (two starts) this year. Case Keenum , on th [... truncated ...]
The Ravens will likely go the rest of the season without Lamar Jackson due to a thumb injury, and Tyler Huntley's status is uncertain
The Bills allowed an average of 28.5 points per game in their first six games of the 2026 season and improving on that was a focus for the team during their bye week. Sunday’s return to action resulted in much better numbers. They allowed the Ravens 144 yards in a 36-10 win that moved their record to 6-1 on the season. After the game was over, head coach Joe Brady said he wants the unit to look at that performance as their standard for the rest of the season. “I think our defense should look at today and understand that that’s what the expectation is,” Brady said, via the team’s website. “And I’m not talking about the production. I’m not talking about the takeaways and sacks. I’m talking about the style that they played, the way that they flew around. Look, I’m just watching it out there, but I think the silent tape’s going to speak loudly in terms of the way that they played for one another, the way they ran around, the communication. Everything we challenged them with coming off the bye, I thought they responded to it, and they just kept going.” Brady’s message was about the defense, but it’s hard to ignore what was going on for the Ravens offense. Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley both left the game with injuries, which meant undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano was pressed into action for the first time in the NFL. Fagnano was overmatched, but future Bills opponents won’t be quite so hamstrung and the Buffalo defense will have to show that they are able to match that level of play against all comers

Lamar Jackson to undergo surgery for injured thumb, may miss rest of season
The Ravens were in trouble on their first play from scrimmage. Lamar Jackson left after an incompletion, injuring his right thumb. The Ravens also lost backup Tyler Huntley to a toe injury in the first half, leaving undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, the emergency third quarterback, to make his NFL debut. Baltimore had no chance, losing to Josh Allen and the Bills 36-10. Buffalo moves to 6-1, and the Ravens fall to 4-4. The Bills led start to finish, outgaining the Ravens 426 to 144. Josh Allen was 21-of-34 for 289 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran seven times for 30 yards and a touchdown. James Cook has 21 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown, and Dalton Kincaid caught four passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. DJ Moore caught four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown but also lost a fumble. Fagnano went 10-of-21 for 91 yards and an interception, and Derrick Henry had 11 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown
Joe Fagnano, the Ravens' emergency QB, played in Week 8 due to injuries to Jackson and Huntley
The Ravens' quarterback situation has been severely impacted by injuries to Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, leading to the emergence of rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano
The Ravens have lost their top two quarterbacks and are playing their third, emergency quarterback, undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano. They haven’t yet lost the game. The Ravens are hanging in there, down only 16-7 at halftime. The Bills have outgained the Ravens 202 to 52, but have two turnovers and once turned it over on downs. Josh Allen is 8-of-19 for 112 yards and an interception and has run for a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down. He has seven carries for 30 yards. DJ Moore lost a fumble on his only catch. James Cook has 14 carries for 54 yards. Tyler Bass has field goals of 56, 22 and 51 yards. Lamar Jackson threw an incompletion on the team’s first play from scrimmage and is out with a right thumb injury. Backup Tyler Huntley left in the second quarter with a toe injury and is 2-of-4 for no yards. Fagnano is 5-of-8 for 50 yards and an interception. Derrick Henry has only 26 yards on six carries, but he does have his 40th touchdown as a Raven
