Cardinals place James Conner on IR among their moves to 53
The Cardinals reached 53 players on Sunday afternoon. Their moves included placing running back James Conner on injured reserve with a designation to return. He will miss at least the first four games before returning to game action as he works his way back from last season’s ankle injury. The Cardinals also announced the release of 2023 second-round pick linebacker BJ Ojulari, who has not been the same since a serious training camp knee injury in 2024. Eku Leota made the team over Ojulari. Veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting was also released, a sign that slot starter Garrett Williams is nearing his return. At times with rib injuries, a minor issue can quickly become major after further examination and tests. But that does not appear to be the case with Arizona’s Carson Beck. Per Josh Weinfuss of ESPN, the Cardinals have “ zero long-term worry ” about Beck’s rib injury. Weinfuss reports Beck suffered the injury on a 4-yard run on third-and-3 in the first quarter. Beck was able to keep playing after securing the first down. He finished that contest 15-of-19 passing for 188 yards with a touchdown. While Beck has been able to practice all week, the Cardinals will not play him in tonight’s game against the Raiders. Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals starters are set to be on the field. Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis are also on Arizona’s roster at quarterback

Carson Beck impressed in his preseason debut during last week’s Hall of Fame Game. But his next time on the field will have to wait. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Beck will not play in tonight’s matchup against the Raiders after suffering a rib injury last Thursday night. Beck was able to practice all week through soreness from the injury, which is not considered serious. But the team has elected to keep him out of tonight’s game as a precaution. The Panthers signed the former Georgia Tech star quarterback as a free agent, and he showed Thursday night maybe someone should have drafted him. Third on the team’s depth chart, King replaced veteran Kenny Pickett with 9:38 remaining in the first half and the Panthers trailing 14-7. King completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, a 15-yarder and a 5-yarder. He also ran for 39 yards on three carries, including scoring on a 5-yard jaunt on the final play of the game. It gave the Panthers a 33-30 victory. He hit Reggie Virgil for what would have been a big gain on his final throw of the night in the third quarter, but Isaiah Simmons knocked it out. Carson Beck excited to start the Hall of Fame Game
Carson Beck had “no clue” he was going to start the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game until this week. He was the last to know. As (almost) everyone knows, veteran quarterbacks don’t generally play in the Hall of Fame Game. The third-round rookie is new to this thing, though. “I thought I was going to play, but I had no expectations ,” Beck said Tuesday, via Darren Urban of the team website. “Obviously our schedule has been crazy right now. But I’m looking forward to it.” Coach Mike LaFleur has not publicly addressed playing time for his quarterbacks, but with Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew expected to spend the night on the sideline, Beck likely sees most of the playing time. Fourth-stringer Kedon Slovis also could play. Beck said he hasn’t been nervous for a game since he was 8 years old and playing for his Pop Warner city championship, and that won’t change Thursday night. “It’s a game at the end of the day,” Beck said. “Not really any nerves. More excitement than anything.” Beck, 24, spent six seasons in college and played in the national championship game last season for the University of Miami. So, he should be unfazed playing a preseason game against the Panthers on Thursday. “That’s one of the best things about him, all of his experience,” offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said. “His age, his understanding that things are going to go good, [and] they are going to go bad. You can never get too excited; you can never get too frustrated.”

Cardinals fans will get their first chance to see rookie quarterback Carson Beck in game action on Thursday night. Head coach Mike LaFleur announced on Tuesday that Beck will get the start against the Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game. LaFleur did not lay out the plan for the rest of the game for the quarterback spot, but it seems unlikely that Jacoby Brissett or Gardner Minshew would get tabbed for any work with the third-round pick starting the game. LaFleur did not hold a press conference on Tuesday, but said on Monday that he thought Beck had his best practice of camp over the weekend. “I thought it was probably the best , and I thought I think our second and third groups have operated a pretty high clip thus far,” LaFleur said, via the team’s website. “Probably the best that they have operated in terms of just you know getting set and going. … They were mimicking the plays that we’re going to run on Thursday night, so that they have a good feel for it.” Kedon Slovis is the fourth quarterback on the roster in Arizona and will likely see playing time after Beck’s night in Canton comes to an end

Quarterback Jacoby Brissett is still in a contract dispute with the Cardinals. But that didn’t stop him from preparing to be the team’s starter this week. Via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Brissett brought several teammates to South Florida this week to work out in preparation for training camp. Brissett posted a picture to social media showing himself, Marvin Harrison Jr., Trey McBride, Elijah Higgins, Kedon Slovis, and Semi Fehoko after a workout. While Brissett did not attend the voluntary portion of the offseason program, he was at the team’s mandatory minicamp last month — though he did not participate in practice. The Cardinals are implementing a new offense under head coach Mike LaFleur, who spent the last three seasons as Rams offensive coordinator. Brissett is currently slated to earn $4.88 million in 2026, with a max value of $5.39 million, but only $1.5 million is guaranteed. Cardinals’ rookie QB Carson Beck: “I didn’t want to ease into anything”
When the Arizona Cardinals selected quarterback Carson Beck from Miami in the third round of April’s NFL draft, the idea posed was the franchise had acquired a young signalcaller that could be stashed on the roster, develop, and bide his time. The QB room had Jacoby Brissett on the roster, who is entering his 11 th NFL season, plus the team signed veteran Gardner Minshew during free agency. Minshew has played in 63 games with 47 starts during his seven-year career. Plus, Kedon Slovis has a year under his belt. RELATED: FANS THINK BRISSETT DESERVES A SLIGHT INCREASE After the draft was completed, the Cardinals have had numerous minicamps and OTAs. All but one was voluntary for players. There is a lot going on with Arizona’s offensive structure this offseason and going into the 2026 season. Right off, there is a new head coach. Mike LaFleur is an offensive-minded guy, which means a lot of attention is being spent on that side of the ball. Secondly, a new OC in Nathaniel Hackett plus new QB coach Matt Schaub . Third, all of the new guys who are now being forced to gel into a cohesive unit. And finally, and this may be the most important, a new offensive system is being introduced and installed. If your job is to repair internal combustion automobiles all of your life, and then someone brings in a Telsa to fix, there is an issue right away. It is one thing to learn a new playbook; it is another to digest a completely fresh offense from top to bottom. Study all you want, but on-field tutelage and classroom sessions is how this is going to work. Beck has been to everything the team has offered. He could have attended an OTA here and there, but he didn’t. Not only has he been to all of the sessions, but the kid has been putting in 13-hour days at the Cardinals’ facility. No rookie player at any position does that. Beck stated to ESPN Arizona : “Just trying to pick (the coach’s) brains and just take every little inch and every little thing to add it to my repertoire and get as good and as comfortable as I can is something that I’ve done from the second I feel like I’ve stepped in the building.” Beck’s strategy is nothing innovative. He wants to make it difficult for this coaching staff to pass over him for either the starting QB job, or at the very least, the backup. And the notion that the franchise would have him practice, learn, and develop for a full season just isn’t a possibility in his mind at all. He said: “From day one, for me, I didn’t want to ease into anything, to be completely honest.” Make no mistake, Beck is putting in the work. And it’s not even training camp yet. After all of the rookies leave their meetings, Beck has been seen spending time with Schaub and oftentimes Hackett for some extra tutelage sessions. The dude is full of questions and so far, has been like a sponge for knowledge at the NFL level. And Beck just might be in the right spot at the right time. Brissett was named this year’s starting QB after the franchise released Kyler Murray . Then, Brissett asked for a bump in pay and has only showed up for the recent mandatory minicamp, but did not practice. In the interim, Minshew and Beck were getting the lion’s share of the practice snaps in an effort to learn this new offense. Now, it’s the lag time of about 40 days before training camp begins. This year, the Cardinals report early because they are involved in the annual Hall of Fame Game held in Canton, Ohio. Arizona will have four preseason games this year instead of the normal three contests. And while a lot of NFL players have booked flights to the Caribbean, or Europe for some R&R, Beck is working at the facility. Taking things slowly is not Beck’s approach. He added regarding his current regiment, which doesn’t require much sleep: “Really, that’s all I’ve done. I’ve been here a ton, been around the guys, been around the coaches, meeting and trying to learn everything as quick as possible.” Beck sees an opportunity for him right aw [... truncated ...]

The Arizona Cardinals nest is about to be full again. Jacoby Brissett will report to mandatory minicamp, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Josh Weinfuss . The three-day program begins on June 8, marking the final stage of offseason activities prior to training camp. Brissett opted not to attend the Cardinals' voluntary offseason program as he seeks a new contract . The 33-year-old would've been subjected to $107,911 in fines if he failed to report to mandatory minicamp, per the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. It's unclear if Brissett intends to limit his participation and stage more of a hold-in rather than a holdout. He is viewed as the Cardinals starter for the upcoming season in a quarterback room that also includes Gardner Minshew , Carson Beck and Kedon Slovis . Brissett took over as the starter in 2025 after Kyler Murray suffered what became a season-ending foot injury. The quarterback appeared in 14 games (12 starts), leading Arizona to a 1-11 record. He completed 64.9% of his passes for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Whether that was enough to earn a raise for the 2026 season remains to be seen.
