You only get one chance to make a first impression, and for rookie NFL quarterbacks, their best chance at that impression comes in the preseason. This year, the Cardinals ' Carson Beck and the Panthers ' Haynes King got things off to a sizzling start in the Hall of Fame Game. Beck -- a third-round pick out of Miami -- went 15-for-19 for 188 yards and a touchdown in a thoroughly impressive performance , but King -- undrafted out of Georgia Tech -- got the last laugh, diving in for a game-winning touchdown on the final play. Think the preseason is boring? Think again! Unfortunately, neither Beck nor King could make any sort of second impression this week, as both were dealing with injuries. Still, there were 15 rookies playing their first (unofficial) NFL game. Here's how they fared. (And yes, I watched every single dropback by these players. Really.) The Louisville product is currently the Bears ' No. 4 quarterback behind Caleb Williams , established backup Tyson Bagent and veteran journeyman Case Keenum , so he's likely hoping for a practice squad spot at best. With no Drake Maye , the Patriots started Tommy DeVito and then brought in Behren Morton in the third quarter. Morton had some short misses that he'd like to have back, but he also delivered a few nice throws. This tight-window completion to Kobe Prentice was his best. Former Illinois standout Luke Altmyer played almost the entire game for the Lions , and he was mostly fine, especially for an undrafted rookie who had to face several Bengals starters at first and then second-stringers as well. His first interception wasn't his fault: Isaac TeSlaa bobbled a well-thrown ball. The second pick was just barely out of the reach of Dominic Lovett . The former LSU signal caller got plenty of opportunities to show he should have gone earlier and was generally solid. The first preseason game on the 2026 NFL calendar is already complete, and three weeks of action lie ahead as the rest of the league joins the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers in the ramp-up process. Last week's Hall of Fame Game was a prime example of how the preseason can reshape the narrative surrounding an entire team. Rookie quarterbacks Carson Beck and Haynes King put on a show, asserting their squads' bright futures. In Beck's case, it might have even accelerated the clock on a position battle. Between the three games per team and the practices leading up to them, the information gleaned from all 32 squads is immensely valuable, as it hints at how the season will unfold. Here are 10 storylines for everyone to follow over the next month of preseason football news. There are only two quarterback battles left to play out after the Vikings named Kyler Murray the Week 1 starter over J.J. McCarthy . Atlanta's is a bit unconventional as Michael Penix Jr . continues to work his way back from a torn ACL. Since the Falcons have not yet tabbed Tua Tagovailoa as their No. 1 option, it will be important to monitor whether Penix progresses enough to take live preseason reps and push for the job. While nearly every team has its quarterback situation settled, most still have at least one position left to square away on the depth chart. The all-important left tackle job is still up for grabs for the Bears and Cowboys , while the Lions and Ravens have decisions to make on the interior offensive lines. Which running back breaks camp as the Steelers' lead option is also uncertain. These five other battles will continue into the preseason and are equally as intriguing: With first-round pick Ty Simpson locked in as the backup to reigning MVP Matthew Stafford , the two likeliest rookie quarterbacks to see meaningful playing time in 2026 are Fernando Mendoza and Carson Beck. If the former makes waves with his preseason opportunities, there will be calls for him to quickly uproot Kirk Cousins as the face of the Raiders ' offense, particularly because he carries tremendous upside as this year's No. 1 overall pick. Beck already dazzled in his debut with a Hall of Fame Game performance that made him look like a worthy contender to steal playing time from Jacoby Brissett . If he replicates his 11-for-14 effort in the next two contests, the Cardinals might want to see what he can do in a regular-season context. Many of the biggest names from this year's draft class are already penciled in as rotational players, if not starters. The bigger question is just how much of an impact they can make, and that will start to become clearer in the preseason. Panthers starters will play Saturday night against the Bills
The Panthers opened their preseason slate in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In one of the most entertaining exhibition games in recent memory, Haynes King had a 5-yard touchdown run on the final play to beat the Cardinals 33-30. Carolina’s starters did not play Thursday night. The Panthers will play their starters, including quarterback Bryce Young, on Saturday night in the Bills’ first game at the new Highmark Stadium. “Yes, yes,” Canales said Sunday about the starters playing, via Anthony Rizzuti of USA Today. “ We will play this week , for sure. We’ll take it week by week. We’ll get them out there, probably play something similar to what Kenny [Pickett] and that group played in the Hall of Fame Game. So it’ll be somewhere between 10 and 20 plays, depending on how those drives pan out, so we can just get some good work in.”

Panthers sign QB Kyle Trask, waive two players
Quarterback Kyle Trask officially joined the Panthers on Sunday. Word on Saturday was that the Panthers would sign Trask to fill out their quarterback room in the wake of Haynes King’s hamstring injury. The rookie was injured in the Hall of Fame Game and is expected to miss some time. Trask was a second-round pick in Tampa in 2021 and he played in seven games as a backup. He failed to make the team last summer and spent time on the Falcons’ practice squad during the regular season. The Panthers also announced that they have waived wide receiver Malick Meiga and linebacker Nick Hampton with injury designations

Report: Panthers are expected to sign QB Kyle Trask
Panthers quarterback Haynes King injured his hamstring in the Hall of Fame Game this week and they are set to add another quarterback to the roster for the coming practice week. Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer reports that they will sign Kyle Trask. Trask recently worked out for the team. Trask played for the Buccaneers when Panthers head coach Dave Canales was the offensive coordinator in Tampa. He spent four seasons with the Bucs before being released last year and spent some time on Atlanta’s practice squad later in the year. King completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions during the Panthers' 33-30 win over the Cardinals in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game. He added three carries for 39 yards and a score. Kenny Pickett was under center for the Panthers' first three drives before the keys were turned over the King in the second quarter. King got to work straight away, leading Carolina on a 10-play, 65-yard drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Seem Reed before adding a five-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Tyus on the second play of the fourth quarter. King made one clutch play after another during the Panthers' final drive, including a 26-yard scramble on third-and-14, and his five-yard run on the game's final play resulted in the game-winning touchdown for Carolina. It was an impressive performance out of King, who signed with the Panthers in late April as an undrafted free agent after his name wasn't called during the 2026 NFL Draft. Although Pickett is the favorite to win the backup QB role behind Bryce Young, King could steal that job away if he can continue to play well in training camp and preseason games. The Panthers' next exhibition game takes place Saturday, Aug. 15 against the Bills
