Four trades the Steelers should make before training camp
Even though we are in the midst of the NFL’s dead period, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed that there is no true “dead period” in a sport where anything can happen at any time. Next week will mark one year since the Steelers and Miami Dolphins pulled off a trade that sent Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick , as well as draft picks going both ways. If there is anything we can count on from the Steelers, it’s that they’ll make a trade – or multiple trades. There are several top guys that could be circled as potential targets, as well as current Steelers who could be dealt in return in deals that would shake up the Steelers’ roster and raise their overall ceiling. In totality, I would focus on these players and potential trades: The Cardinals are about to trot out some combination of Jacoby Brissett , Gardner Minshew , and Carson Beck at quarterback – those aren’t the actions of an organization that expects to win a lot of games. Baker is entering his 10th year in the league, all of which have been spent in Arizona. In that time, he’s been part of precisely one playoff game, a lopsided loss to the Los Angeles Rams to end the Cardinals’ 2021 season. As he enters the final years of his career, the two-time All-Pro should go somewhere he can compete. And while the Steelers’ haven’t won a postseason game in their own right since the 2016 season, they are always in the picture or playing in January. They need another safety to put alongside Jaquan Brisker and DeShon Elliott , and an eight-time Pro Bowler would be a welcome addition. Projected trade: Cardinals receive: 2027 fifth-round pick, 2028 fifth-round pick Steelers receive: S Budda Baker Similarly to Arizona, the Dolphins aren’t positioning themselves to contend for anything outside of the No. 1 overall pick. Brooks led the NFL in tackles in 2025 and has established himself as one of the best MIKE linebackers in the league today, and wouldn’t it be something to see these two franchises come together for another big trade nearly on year to the day of doing it in 2025? Projected trade: Dolphins receive: 2027 fourth-round pick, 2028 fifth-round pick Steelers receive: LB Jordyn Brooks, 2027 sixth-round pick And should this trade come to be, well then… Speaking of teams not afraid to make a trade, hello, Los Angeles . Les Snead and Sean McVay have already acquired Trent McDuffie and Myles Garrett this offseason, and adding Queen would help improve the worst unit on their roster. Nate Landman began the year hot, but fizzled out in the final two months of 2025 into the postseason. Queen would be a notable upgrade for a team going all in over the next two seasons to win a championship while Matthew Stafford is still there and playing at a high level. Queen is in the final year of his deal with Pittsburgh, and it would be a shock, to say the least, if he returned in 2027. That said, I would only trade him if they acquired Brooks to ensure having a high-quality player at the position. Projected trade: Rams receive: LB Patrick Queen Steelers receive: 2027 fourth-round pick The best case scenario for Roman Wilson is that he’s the No. 4 wide receiver on Pittsburgh’s depth chart. Considering he was a healthy scratch for almost the entire month of December, only coming back when DK Metcalf was suspended. The ceiling is low for him in Pittsburgh. Send him back to his college coach Jim Harbaugh where he may be used a bit more in a Chargers’ receiving corps that is much thinner in talent than the Steelers. Mike Vrabel hints at Patriots adding more tight end depth
It’s been over a week since New England Patriots tight end Julian Hill was placed on season-ending injured reserve just months after signing a three-year deal with the Patriots to pair up with veteran Hunter Henry . Now, New England may need to address the tight end room as the offseason continues, adding another body to the mix. “I think just from a numbers standpoint in camp, I think that’s somewhere we’ll probably have to evaluate the numbers,” head coach Mike Vrabel said before Wednesday’s mandatory minicamp practice . “There’s 90 guys, 91 guys on every team. So, we’ll just have to take a look at that, but I would say that’s probably somewhere where we would have to address.” However, a thin group of free agents remains at the position, including former Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith and recovering veterans Taysom Hill and Zach Ertz . Otherwise, New England would be picking from an already poached undrafted free agent class. Currently, the Patriots have just five rostered tight ends : Henry, hybrid tight end and fullback Jack Westover, who primarily played in the backfield last season, rookie Eli Raridon, 2025 undrafted free agent CJ Dippre and undrafted free agent Tanner Arkin, from Illinois. New England spent a third-round pick in the NFL Draft this offseason to select Raridon. At Notre Dame, the 22-year-old has 48 career receptions for the Fighting Irish, with 32 coming his senior season. Raridon could take on a larger role quickly this offseason to help replace Hill’s role in 2026. “Willing, conscientious, wants to learn,” Vrabel said of Raridon’s progress. “I think there’s a lot of new things that come in from college, and terminology is different, and there’s a lot of things that are new to him, but I would say that he picks things up quickly. When he’s able to play with the speed that he has available to him, that’s kind of shown up.” “With a lot of these young guys, just the terminology, the routes, the coverage, just try to eliminate [the thinking] and allow them to play as fast as possible. In the spring, it’s like, ‘Hey, let’s try to play out of control. Let’s play too fast.’ If you make a mistake, that’s fine, but we’ve got to start training that play speed.” Raridon largely spent his first two years at Notre Dame on the sidelines, nursing two right knee injuries, and had previously torn the same ACL twice. Still, he’s an intriguing prospect for the Patriots due to his ability to be a consistent pass-catcher for quarterback Drake Maye and be a vertical threat. “Eli’s doing a good job,” Hunter Henry said on Tuesday. “I know it’s a lot coming in the league, trying to blend in with older guys, younger guys. The pressure of it, obviously getting drafted. A lot of us have been through it, and I’ve been through it myself. He’s been a sponge, trying to soak up as much as he can in the room, asking questions. He’s getting better day by day, and I’m excited to continue to work with him.” Henry also mentioned Arkin as a young player who’s trying to learn and make the most of his opportunities. “Tanner’s been great,” Henry said. “When he gets his opportunities, he’s taking advantage of it. That’s all you can ask for as a young guy. He’s continued to get better. It’s the same thing: as a rookie, as a young guy, you kind of have to be a sponge, trying to soak up as much as you can, trying to ask questions when you can. But just try to watch and follow and learn as much as you can from just us in the room, [and] some of the other positions.”

Let’s talk Steelers: How would you grade the Darnell Washington extension?
Steelers general manager Omar Khan has been focusing on extending his successful 2023 draft class recently, giving us plenty of new contracts to grade. Recently, we talked about the risk and reward of outside linebacker Nick Herbig’s recent four-year, $100 million contract . Now, let’s do the same for Darnell Washington’s four-year, $42 million deal. You can read the full financial details here . Ultimately, Washington carries a small, $3.47 million cap hit in 2026. Then, from 2027-2030, it stays in the $10 million range. With less than half the deal’s total worth guaranteed, Washington’s yearly dead cap hit sits at $8 million in 2027, dropping $2 million in each following season. It’s not financially crippling for the team in the least. With the new deal, Washington is now the 13th highest-paid in the league at his position with a $10.5 million yearly average, still well below the 49ers ’ George Kittle ’s NFL-leading $19.5 million. Even Washington’s fellow Pittsburgh tight end Pat Freiermuth makes more, with the 10th-highest yearly average at $12.1 million, per Spotrac . Washington hasn’t been the most productive receiver over his time in the pros, but he is coming off a career-best 31-catch, 364-yard season in 2025, including one touchdown. He was the team’s most-played tight end on offense, narrowly out-snapping both Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith . Of course, where Washington’s true value lies is as a blocker, where he is the rare talent who can hold up against defensive ends one-on-one thanks to his sheer size and strength at 6’7 and a weight that likely sits at or near the 300-pound range. A lumbering mover as a route runner who dropped four passes in 2025, Washington’s upside as a receiving weapon may be limited, even if he still is a freakish mover for his size. But even as a pure blocking tight end, his contract value is fair — the Vikings signed Josh Oliver , one of the best blocking tight ends in the league, to a $7.75 million per year contract in 2025, and the value of such players has just continued to rise. Look at the 2026 draft class ! Plus, the tight ends still making more than Washington include good-not-great names such as Evan Engram , Cole Kmet , and Isaiah Likely . Their roles in their respective offenses may not be the most comparable, but names such as Likely and Kmet have similarly not always been the primary tight end on their teams. All that to say, the Steelers got a reasonable value for Washington. My only concerns lie with potential for injury, and how Washington will be used in the Steelers’ new offense under Mike McCarthy. Washington had knee concerns coming out of the draft in 2023, which was the likely reason why he fell to Pittsburgh in the third round. However, in the NFL he’s been incredibly durable, playing in all but one regular season game through his first three years in the league. Still, with his size, it remains a bit of a concern moving forward. Then, there’s the question of if Washington’s skill set will still be used as well as it was in Arthur Smith’s 2025 Steelers offense. With Mike McCarthy likely to prioritize more 11 personnel (one tight end) moving forward, it will be interesting to see if Pittsburgh can maximize its investments in both Washington and Freiermuth, especially considering the latter is the more dynamic receiving target. But if anything, the Steelers’ decision to lock up Washington long term signals the team is both confident in his health and sees him a key piece of the offense moving forward. And why wouldn’t they? He’s a force multiplier in the run game who’s still a threat to ruin a defensive back’s day while gaining yards after catch in the open field. Like with Nick Herbig ’s contract, we’ll reserve the “A” for true slam-dunk deals and bargains. This contract still comes with some question marks. Steelers, Darnell Washington Agree to Four-Year Extension
The Pittsburgh Steelers and tight end Darnell Washington agreed to a four-year, $42 million contract extension on Wednesday, sources told Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports. The hulking 6-foot-7, 264-pounder has developed into a key piece of Pittsburgh's offense after they selected him in the third round (93rd overall) in 2023 out of the University of Georgia. Although the 24-year-old hasn't been on the fantasy football radar, outside of dynasty/keeper leagues, he could have an even bigger role with the Steelers in 2026 after both Jonnu Smith and Connor Heyward left in free agency this offseason. Washington had his best year as a pro in 2025 in Year 3 in the Steel City, catching 31 of his 43 targets for 364 yards and just one touchdown in 16 regular-season games (13 starts). Pat Freiermuth remains the better fantasy target in single-year leagues, but Washington could be a Freiermuth injury away from becoming a weekly TE option for fantasy managers

Rookie TE Justin Joly could be a red zone monster for the Broncos
The Denver Broncos traded up to pick 152 to select NC State tight end Justin Joly in the 5th round of the 2026 NFL Draft. We all expected the Broncos to draft a tight end, and they ended up drafting two, with Joly being the first due to a trade-up. Joly is a 6-3, 245-pound tight end with 32 3/4 inch arms and 10 5/8 inch hands and profiles as a contested catch move tight end who will be a weapon in the middle of the field and in the red zone. After starting his college career at UConn, Joly played the past two seasons at NC State and turned into one of the better playmaking tight ends in the nation. During his two seasons, he appeared in 25 games and totaled 92 receptions for 1,150 yards and 11 touchdowns. This past year, he totaled 49 receptions for 489 yards and 7 touchdowns The Athletic’s Dane Brugler had Justin Joly as his TE5 in this draft and had a 3rd/4th round grade on him. Now, the Broncos trade up to get him in the 5th round. Brugler calls Joly a versatile pass catcher, and due to his athleticism, ball skills, and upside, he profiles as a three-level threat. Joly is a good-sized athlete who can drop his weight at the top of routes and uncover with foot quicks and savvy. He has large, strong hands and has developed into a ball winner with his ability to frame the catch and finish, regardless of his surroundings. He competes as a blocker and has the coordination to stay attached but lacks the body power to dominate the point of attack. Joly is a versatile pass catcher, because of his athleticism, ball skills and upside as a three-level threat. Built in the mold of Jonnu Smith , he is more Robin than Batman and ideally suited as a “move” tight end in a 12-personnel offense. Joly was drafted to give the Broncos some life to their tight end room, which was not very good last season. Veteran Evan Engram failed to live up to expectations after being signed to be the ‘Joker’, and Adam Trautman is mostly used to block. Joly is a contested catch monster and can be a receiving threat in the middle of the field and in the red zone/end zone for quarterback Bo Nix . Most analysts projected Joly to be a late Day 2 or early Day 3 player, but he slipped into the 5th round, and the Broncos had to pounce. They got some good value and a tight end who could turn into a potential playmaker for the Broncos moving forward. While he’s a 5th-round pick, I am confident in saying he is locked into a roster spot. He is someone who many believed could be in play for the Broncos in Day 2 and certainly in the 4th round. However, he slipped into the 5th round, and the Broncos moved up to get him. He is your classic “move tight end” who thrives at contested catches and inside the red zone. We could see him used in some two-tight-end sets, be a target in the middle of the field, and be a featured red-zone weapon for quarterback Bo Nix. He has big, strong hands and has thrived in those roles in college, and I believe that is how he will be used in the NFL moving forward. With that said, veteran Evan Engram is expected to be the featured pass-catching tight end once again this season, so Joly will need to earn his playing time. Like all pass-catching tight ends, Joly will need to prove himself as a blocker at the next level, too, but Head Coach Sean Payton told reporters that they view Joly more as an “F” tight end while fellow rookie tight end Dallen Bentley is more of the in-line guy. With Bentley, there’s a more in-line wide, bigger. He does a great job down the field. With Joly, that would put him more in the ‘F’ category. Both are tight ends, and both have unique skill sets.
