MarShawn Lloyd Sharing First-Team Reps at Practice
Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd and newcomer Kaleb Johnson were both working with quarterback Jordan Love in individual drills during Wednesday's practice, according to Ryan Wood of USA Today. Lloyd went from being the team's RB2 to being thrust into a potential lead-back role for Week 1 when the Packers placed Josh Jacobs on the commissioner's exempt list over the weekend. The 25-year-old has appeared in just one NFL game since the Packers took him in the third round in 2024 out of USC due to injuries, but he is primed for a significant role in the backfield with Jacobs sidelined. It is unclear exactly how Green Bay's touches will be distributed behind Love, but if Wednesday's practice is any indication, it could be a 50/50 split between Lloyd and Johnson, a third-rounder out of Iowa by the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. Lloyd's speed and athleticism have suddenly made him a mid-round target at the RB position, despite his lack of NFL experience. MarShawn Lloyd Gets First Crack at Green Bay Backfield
Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd could get the first shot at the starting job while Josh Jacobs is on the Commissioner's Exempt List. ESPN's Dan Graziano reports that the coaching staff has liked what it has seen from Lloyd throughout the offseason and training camp, and believes he could run with the opportunity. Lloyd has barely had a chance to show anything in the regular season, playing just one game across his first two years because of injuries. He had six carries for 15 yards in that 2024 appearance and did not play at all in 2025. This summer has gone much better. Lloyd stayed healthy through camp, mixed in with the first-team offense and had 10 carries for 30 yards with two catches in the preseason, including an 11-yard touchdown against Denver. Green Bay also has Chris Brooks and recently acquired Kaleb Johnson, so the job is not automatically Lloyd's. But if he stays healthy and produces, ESPN's report makes it clear he has a real chance to claim the backfield

MarShawn Lloyd "as Ready as He's Ever Been" for Lead-Back Role
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said on Tuesday that running back MarShawn Lloyd is "as ready as he's ever been... he looks good," according to Dennis Krause of Spectrum News 1 Wisconsin. With starting running back Josh Jacobs (groin) on the commissioner's exempt list due to an ongoing domestic-violence allegation, the 25-year-old Lloyd is looking primed to lead Green Bay's backfield to begin the 2026 regular season in Week 1. The Packers acquired RB Kaleb Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday for more RB depth, but he should not be a direct threat to Lloyd as the RB1 if Jacobs indeed is suspended for the start of the season. Lloyd, a third-rounder in 2024 from USC, has played in just one game with the Packers due to multiple injuries, but he has held up well physically to the rigors of training camp and the preseason and looks ready to go. The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a trade that'll send running back Kaleb Johnson to Lambeau Field, according to ESPN . Johnson himself confirmed the trade to Green Bay, posting on his Instagram story, "Appreciate it, Steelers Nation. Let's do it, Packers." The compensation that will be heading back to Pittsburgh has not been immediately disclosed. The Steelers selected Johnson with the 83rd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft . The now 23-year-old played his college ball at Iowa, where he earned consensus All-American honors in 2024 and was also named the Big Ten Running Back of the Year that season. Johnson's pro career, however, hasn't been as fruitful. A miscue on special teams early in his rookie season last year derailed any sort of immediate ascent up the Pittsburgh backfield depth chart. Johnson appeared in 10 games (no starts) and rushed 28 times for 69 yards, while catching one of his two targets on the year for 9 yards. He has yet to score a touchdown. With Mike McCarthy now in as head coach in Pittsburgh, Johnson found himself part of the previous regime and on the outside looking in on a potential roster spot. Along with veteran Jayen Warren, who served as the primary starter for the Steelers last season, the organization signed fellow vet Rico Dowdle to a two-year, $12.25 million deal in free agency. Those two were locked in as the top options in the rushing attack, making Johnson expendable. Meanwhile, Johnson arrives to a Green Bay team that finds itself in a state of uncertainty atop its running back depth chart. Josh Jacobs is the clear-cut starter when available, but the former first-team All-Pro back was charged with two misdemeanors for battery and damage to property stemming from a May arrest and was placed on the commissioner's exempt list on Sunday. That leaves Jacobs facing potential punishment from the league, and he has since been placed on the commissioner's exempt list. Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd suddenly has another back to deal with. Green Bay acquired Kaleb Johnson from Pittsburgh on Sunday, a move that comes just days after general manager Brian Gutekunst said the team had been preparing for the possibility of a Josh Jacobs suspension. Lloyd had been moving in the other direction before the trade. He started the preseason opener with Jacobs sidelined, worked extensively with the first-team offense and caught an 11-yard touchdown from Jordan Love against Denver.
