Josh Johnson to stick with Bengals on practice squad
Veteran quarterback Josh Johnson’s third stint with the Bengals will continue. Johnson will sign with Cincinnati’s practice squad, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. The Bengals have just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster in Joe Burrow and backup Joe Flacco. Johnson, 40, signed a one-year deal with the Bengals in March after spending last season with the Commanders. He appeared in five games with two starts for Washington, completing 63 percent of his passes for 372 yards with one touchdown and two picks. In this year’s preseason for Cincinnati, Johnson completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 396 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson’s long career has now seen him play for the Bucs, 49ers, Browns, Bengals, Jets, Colts, Bills, Ravens, Giants, Texans, Raiders, Lions, Commanders, and Broncos

Bengals will release Josh Johnson
Quarterback Josh Johnson will have a chance to add to the long list of teams that have employed him over the course of his NFL career. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Johnson will be released as part of the Bengals’ cut to 53 players on Sunday. Johnson was behind Joe Burrow and Joe Flacco on the depth chart with Sean Clifford also on hand this summer. Johnson played in five games and made two starts for the Commanders in 2025. He’s appeared in games for five other teams and spent time with 14 clubs since entering the league as a 2008 fifth-round pick of the Buccaneers. That experience could help him find a spot on another roster before Week 1 kicks off in less than two weeks

Dan Campbell on DE Ahmed Hassanein: I felt he'd come out and make plays
The Lions kept their starters out of Thursday’s game against the Bengals and that gave players further down the depth chart a chance to grab the spotlight. Defensive end Ahmed Hassanein did just that. The 2025 sixth-round pick did not get off the practice squad last season, but he has regularly drawn good notices in practice this summer and his pass rushing skills were put to good use against Cincinnati. Hassanein’s first snap on Thursday resulted in a sack of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and he added a strip-sack of Josh Johnson in the third quarter of the game. “It was great to see ,” head coach Dan Campbell said, via the team’s website. “I don’t really feel like I’m surprised. I felt like he’d come out and make plays. Just the nature of the way he’s been practicing and some of the things he’s able to do you’d feel like would translate certainly into this first preseason game. It was good to see. He just plays maximum effort and he’s disruptive.” Aidan Hutchinson, D.J. Wonnum, and second-round pick Derrick Moore did not play on Thursday, so Hassanein still has some work to do to find a place in the lineup come September. More performances like he had against the Bengals won’t hurt his chances of earning one

Continuing our previews of the Dallas Cowboys 2026 opponents, it is time to wrap up the NFC East with the Washington Commanders. Most recently, we looked at the very new-look New York Giants , who the Cowboys will see in week one, and it won’t be long after that until the Cowboys play the Commanders, hosting them in week two. The Cowboys swept the Commanders for the second time in three seasons last year, pulling away in the second half of a week seven home win, and winning at Washington on Christmas Day. Both games were marked by the familiar theme of the Commanders having availability issues at quarterback. Jayden Daniels was knocked out of the 44-22 runaway Cowboys win in Arlington, replaced by Marcus Mariota . Daniels only appeared in two more games the rest of the season after this week seven loss, and one of them was not on Christmas against the Cowboys, as that game was started by journeyman Josh Johnson . Going into year three of Dan Quinn as head coach, the Commanders are facing a bit of an identity crisis, falling from 12-5 and an appearance in the NFC Championship game in Daniels’ rookie season to 5-12 battling through his injuries last season, only one game ahead of the last place Giants. Like the Cowboys, the Commanders have done well to maintain a high amount of continuity on offense, but for the first time in Quinn’s tenure in Washington he will not have Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator, and questions persist about their ability to protect Daniels to make any of this matter anyway. On defense, the Commanders have made a lot of changes to lean even further into the style that Quinn wants to play, and even done some things that Cowboys fans familiar with this defense would certainly call uncharacteristic, most notably drafting an 0ff-ball linebacker in the top ten with Sonny Styles . Week two is early enough to expect the Cowboys to see Jayden Daniels, and if this Commanders defense gets up to speed quickly as well, this game could easily prove to be a second straight close NFC East battle that will go a long way in shaping up the final division standings at the end of the year. On the departure side, it is interesting to see two former Cowboys in Biadasz and Igbinoghene leave the team, as well as Jonathan Jones leaving the Commanders for the rival Eagles. The area the Commanders did the most work with external free agents is the defensive line. Settle, Chaisson, Omenihu, and Oweh give this team a new pass rush look up front, joining mainstays in Javon Kinlaw , Daron Payne , and former Cowboy Dorance Armstrong who is still with the Commanders. Gone are the days of the Commanders stockpiling Alabama-bred defensive linemen, particularly interior tackles, and having lines that were good at holding the line of scrimmage, but lacked in juice. Quinn is looking to rebuild an aggressive, penetrating defense starting with the front, and has some big new names in the secondary to tie this defense together as well. Ahkello Witherspoon coming over from the Rams is the headline here along with Rasul Douglas, as well as Nick Cross at safety. 2026 AFC North Positional Rankings: Quarterback
During this year’s free agency cycle and 2026 NFL draft, all four AFC North teams made significant moves to add talent to their rosters. While more additions are still possible over the next few months, everyone’s core players are mostly set ahead of the 2026 season. How do the different positional groups in the division stack up to one another? Let’s rank the AFC North squads by position, starting with quarterback. Starter: Lamar Jackson Depth: Tyler Huntley , Skylar Thompson, Diego Pavia , Joey Fagnano Jackson is coming off a disappointing 2025 season that was muddied by nagging injuries, which limited his athleticism for much of the year. He started to round more into form over the final few games, but the Ravens fell just short of the postseason. In a new offensive system surrounded by fresh personnel and coaches, Jackson should be primed for a big bounce back in 2026. The Ravens re-signed Huntley, who is the most optimal backup to Jackson, to a two-year deal this offseason. Huntley is one of the better second-stringers in the league. They added competition for the No. 3 spot with a veteran in Thompson and two undrafted free agent rookies. Starter: Joe Burrow Depth: Joe Flacco , Josh Johnson, Sean Clifford Burrow played in only eight games last season but again produced at a high level and led a potent Bengals’ offensive attack. Like Jackson, Burrow is still undoubtedly one of the premier quarterbacks in the NFL despite injury struggles and not making the playoffs again in 2025. The Bengals re-signed Flacco to return as Burrow’s backup after he joined the team in the middle of the season last year. Flacco performed admirably and is still a quality veteran backup and spot-starter at 41 years old. Journeyman Josh Johnson was signed to a one-year contract earlier this offseason as well, who is a capable third-string quarterback. Starter: Aaron Rodgers Depth: Mason Rudolph , Will Howard , Drew Allar After a long wait this spring, the Steelers wound up re-signing Aaron Rodgers to return for what will be his final NFL season. Rodgers, now 42 years old, was still probably the best option available for the Steelers. He finished middle-of-the-pack in most statistical categories among starting quarterbacks last season, but should have an improved offensive ecosystem around him in 2026. The Steelers also made a high-profile move in the draft by acquiring Penn State’s Drew Allar in the third round, who has the potential to develop into a starter-caliber quarterback. Mason Rudolph and rising sophomore Will Howard provide quality depth behind Rodgers. Starter: Deshaun Watson Depth: Shedeur Sanders , Dillon Gabriel , Taylen Green The Browns’ quarterback room is once again a bit of a jumbled mess, clouded by the return of the highly paid Deshaun Watson. Watson is a true wild card having not played since the middle of the 2024 season. He’s played only 19 games for the Browns since 2022 and his on-field performance has left much to be desired. Shedeur Sanders is competing with Watson for the starting role. Sanders has more long-term upside than Watson at this point but had a very shaky rookie season. Fellow rising sophomore Dillon Gabriel appears firmly in third pecking order spot after starting games last year
