Josh Johnson to stick with Bengals on practice squad
Veteran quarterback Josh Johnson’s third stint with the Bengals will continue. Johnson will sign with Cincinnati’s practice squad, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. The Bengals have just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster in Joe Burrow and backup Joe Flacco. Johnson, 40, signed a one-year deal with the Bengals in March after spending last season with the Commanders. He appeared in five games with two starts for Washington, completing 63 percent of his passes for 372 yards with one touchdown and two picks. In this year’s preseason for Cincinnati, Johnson completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 396 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Deshaun Watson outplays Shedeur Sanders in preseason opener, but Browns QB battle leaves plenty to be desired
With the Minnesota Vikings ' decision to roll with Kyler Murray over J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr . still sidelined as he recovers from a torn ACL, the NFL world has one quarterback battle to zero in on. The Cleveland Browns are evaluating whether Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders should be their starting signal-caller, and the battle has now drifted into the preseason. Watson has been a disaster since Cleveland traded for him four years ago. The Browns signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed deal, and he responded by posting the worst completion percentage, yards per attempt and TD-INT ratio in the NFL since leaving the Texans . It has been more than 2,000 days since Watson threw for 300 yards in an NFL game. The retired Tom Brady has 14 300-yard games since Watson's last one. There is just one year remaining on Watson's contract, but he hasn't played in a regular-season game since Oct. 20, 2024, due to two torn Achilles. Sanders, on the other hand, sparked some optimism after the benchings of Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel last year. He won three of Cleveland's five games and made the Pro Bowl as an alternate. However, Sanders' 10 interceptions since his NFL debut in Week 11 were the most in the NFL, and his 57% completion percentage ranked second-worst. As a prospect, Sanders was criticized for holding onto the ball too long and having a slow throwing operation. Those issues definitely showed up during his rookie season. These quarterbacks received the majority of reps during the Browns' first preseason game , a 34-10 loss to the Bears in Chicago. Let's examine how they fared. Watson played the entire first half for the Browns and completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards. He was sacked once, resulting in a fumble, and scrambled three times for four yards. Head coach Todd Monken didn't allow Watson to throw the ball on Cleveland's first possession, as three straight Quinshon Judkins runs resulted in a three-and-out. But Watson led a field goal drive on Cleveland's second possession. He hit Jerry Jeudy on a 14-yard in-breaking route, then followed up his first big play with a 15-yard completion to rookie Denzel Boston on third-and-5. The possession only ended because Harold Fannin Jr . dropped an easy conversion on third down. Watson then led a 10-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown from rookie KC Concepcion , who punched in an end-around from 14 yards out. Dylan Sampson sparked the drive, turning a short reception into a 43-yard gain to the other side of the field. In all, Watson looked OK through three possessions. Then things went downhill. On Cleveland's next possession, Bears pass rusher Jamree Kromah got to Watson during his throwing motion, knocked the ball loose and then recovered the fumble. Maybe the quarterback doesn't deserve all the blame here, but it was an ugly-looking blooper during which Watson fell forward while the pigskin fluttered backward. You didn't come away from the first half feeling like Watson was the favorite to win the starting quarterback job. Joe Burrow plays two series in Bengals' preseason opener
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow started the team’s first preseason game Thursday night against the Lions. He went 5-for-6 for 39 yards, with his only incompletion coming when his arm was hit. Burrow had a 16-yard completion to Ja’Marr Chase. He was sacked for a 9-yard loss two plays later, and the drive stalled. The Bengals went 32 yards in nine plays on Burrow’s second series, with Evan McPherson kicking a 56-yard field goal. Joe Flacco replaced Burrow and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jack Endries in the second quarter, giving the Bengals a 10-0 lead. The Lions are not playing their starters tonight

NFL futures betting: Aaron Donald expert's pick for NFL Comeback Player of the Year, plus a deep CPOY sleeper
We are currently in the middle of doing our annual NFL SportsLine futures betting draft (look for that article at a later date), and while I won't get into the weeds of exactly what's going on with that draft, the gist is we do a snake draft to select various win totals and award winners, with whoever ends up "making" the most taking home everyone's entry fee. This applies to every single one of the trophies handed out at NFL Honors, but CPOY is especially difficult to wrangle. A few years ago, Joe Flacco won the award despite not actually coming back from anything other than unemployement. Because Flacco beat out Damar Hamlin , someone at the NFL or the Associated Press got angry and decided to ask voters to "consider the spirit" of the award, which is supposed to be coming back from hardship of some kind. Basically, it should go to someone who came back from injury. This is a problem for a wager on Aaron Donald because Donald is not coming back from injury. In fact, Donald hasn't even officially come back yet -- he's still retired. The latter is why we're still getting a good price on him. If he does come back, that price will drop. And perhaps we should say when he does come back, because it's looking increasingly likely that he returns to the Rams to team up with Myles Garrett and ruin 17 Sundays for various offensive linemen. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported on NBC during last week's Hall of Fame game that he believes Donald could return as soon as this weekend, specifically mentioning Friday. Regardless, Florio believes it's all but done at this point, with the Rams simply needing to figure out how to get Donald the requisite amount of cash from ownership to pay him his 2026 salary. That will not be a sticking point for a franchise that's all-in on this season as it tries to win a second Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford at quarterback. As to the first point about how the award is handled, I will concede it is somewhat of a concern. The AP wants the voters to lean towards someone who has returned from some kind of hardship, and Donald does not qualify in that sense. There are several big-name players -- notably Patrick Mahomes and Jayden Daniels -- would could nuke this wager with strong seasons that result in voters giving them a nod, much in the same way Joe Burrow won for the second time in 2024. But what is more comeback than leaving football for several years and returning to play at a hyper-dominant level? We probably won't get a full game's worth of snaps from Donald out of the gate, which is fine. The Rams are going to ramp him up and will want him to play the entire season. If he does that and is remotely close to his old self on a top-five defense, I think there will be a strong push to get Donald the award, particularly if the Rams are as good as everyone expects them to be. Texans 2026 NFL futures: If CJ Stroud improves, only franchise to not play in a conference title game could
It feels like a bit of a make-or-break season in Houston for quarterback C.J. Stroud , as he has clearly regressed from his 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign. Stroud wants to be in the $50 million per year quarterback club and is eligible for an extension, but the Texans don't appear in a major rush and have already slapped the fifth-year option on the former No. 2 overall pick. Since I'm a glass half-full guy, first the good news: DeMeco Ryans and Stroud are only the second head coach/quarterback duo ever with a playoff win in each of their first three seasons in the league, after John Harbuagh and Joe Flacco in Baltimore. But Houston remains the only active NFL franchise to never play in a conference title game and is only the third team in history with a Wild Card win and a Divisional Round loss in three straight seasons. I believe the Texans will repeat as AFC South champions, and they are +110 favorites if you want to try futures betting on any of the best betting apps . To finally reach that AFC title game, they are +850 sixth-favorites. That's certainly possible with the NFL's best defense, if Stroud can perhaps return to 2023 form. For this season, Stroud is +4500 to win NFL MVP, +3500 to lead the league in passing yards, +4500 in passing TDs but among the favorites at +1400 to be No. 1 in interceptions thrown. He is given Over/Under totals of 3.599.5 passing yards and 22.5 touchdowns. Stroud didn't come close to topping either last year, but he missed three games. Stroud was only sacked 23 times last year, but the Texans opted to remake the offensive line anyway, signing free agents in Braden Smith and Wyatt Teller and taking Georgia Tech guard Keylan Rutledge with their first-round pick at No. 26 overall. In addition, the team added a very solid running back in David Montgomery to pair with Woody Marks , who had a promising 2025 rookie year. Houston ranked 22nd in rushing last year at 108.0 yards per game. But perhaps the biggest help for Stroud comes in the form of wideout Tank Dell . The third-round pick from 2023 missed all of last season after he suffered multiple torn ligaments and a dislocated kneecap in his team's Week 16 loss to Kansas City in 2024. Todd Monken: Dillon Gabriel is earning more reps
In the Cleveland quarterback competition between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, there could be a third candidate creeping up on the outside. Dillon Gabriel, drafted two rounds before Sanders in 2025, is performing well enough to earn more chances to perform. “I said it the other day, everybody’s competing, but you’re not guaranteed the same amount of reps,” coach Todd Monken told reporters on Monday. “So it’s up to the player to take advantage and maximize those reps, which I feel like Dillon has done. So we’ll see as we move forward, if that continues, we’ll continue to up his reps. He’s earned that. That’s what every player should expect, right? If they play well, you have to up the reps, or what’s the purpose of playing well?” The best players play. If neither Sanders nor Watson seize the job and Gabriel continues to do the most with the chances he has, why shouldn’t he get more chances? In theory, that could mean stealing the job from both of them — if he ends up being the best performer of the bunch. Gabriel started six games in 2025, replacing Week 1 starter Joe Flacco. After going 1-5 in those games, Gabriel yielded to Sanders. And so the forgotten man on the depth chart could be forcing the Browns to remember him. And, eventually, to play him

How Shedeur Sanders can win Browns QB battle over Deshaun Watson
Another year, another Cleveland Browns quarterback competition. However, this year's battle in Cleveland is different, pitting two of the NFL's biggest names against each other: 2025 Pro Bowler Shedeur Sanders and three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson . After tumbling down the 2025 NFL draft board, the Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick. He had to wait his turn after seeing both Joe Flacco and 2025 third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel play over him, but once Sanders subbed in for Gabriel in Week 11, it was his show the rest of the way. He's a lot fresher than Watson, who hasn't played in an NFL regular-season game in over 600 days after tearing his Achilles in Week 7 of the 2024 season. A re-tear of the same Achilles that occurred in the ensuing offseason held out of the 2025 season entirely. Watson has started just 19 games in four seasons since he signed a five-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $230 million, a then-NFL record following the Browns' acquisition of him in a trade that cost the franchise three first-round picks. Whoever emerges victorious from this training camp battle will be angling to put the Browns out of the historic quarterback misery the franchise is currently mired in. Cleveland has finished outside the top 10 in passer rating in 30 consecutive seasons, the longest such streak in NFL history, per CBS Sports Research. By this metric, the Browns haven't possessed top 10 quarterback play since 1992, when Bill Belichick was their head coach, and Bernie Kosar was their Week 1 starting quarterback. Let's break down the case for each passer, plus a prediction for how the quarterback position shakes out for Cleveland throughout the 2026 season. The case for Sanders is simple: let the young guy develop and see if he can get up to the NFL's speed. The 24-year-old was overwhelmed by the transition from college football at Colorado to life in the pros with the Browns. No one threw more interceptions than Sanders' 10 after he made his league debut in Week 11 last season, and no one had a longer average time to throw in that span than Sanders' average of 3.40 seconds. Holding the ball too long was his glaring weakness in college , and it resurfaced during his rookie year, which played a major role in Sanders' overall inefficiency. He was the most pressured quarterback in the NFL, facing pressure on an NFL-high 51.4% of his dropbacks from Weeks 11 to 18 last season, despite only being blitzed on 24.1% of his dropbacks, the seventh-lowest rate in the league in the same span. Some of that was on Sanders' desperation to make plays and league-leading average time to throw of 3.40 seconds, but plenty of that was on the offensive line, too. The Browns' 2025 offensive line allowed an NFL-worst 45.5% quarterback pressure across the entirety of the 2025 season. Cleveland's pass-blocking struggles are a major reason all five of its primary offensive line starters from the 2025 season are no longer on the roster. Those issues also drove the Browns to select Utah All-American offensive lineman Spencer Fano ninth overall in the 2026 NFL Draft: he did not allow a sack in his final 23 collegiate games, spanning 737 pass-blocking snaps. Fano will plug in at left tackle in 2026 while lining up to the following players from left to right: former Chargers first-round pick Zion Johnson , former Packers Pro Bowler Elgton Jenkins , former Bears second-round pick Teven Jenkins and Browns fourth-round pick Dawand Jones . It’s been an eventful two years for former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett. After the Steelers went 3-0 down the stretch to close the 2023 season under Mason Rudolph , clinching a playoff berth in the process, the writing appeared to be on the wall for the University of Pittsburgh product. The Steelers signed Russell Wilson on the first day of the 2024 league year, which led to Pickett requesting a trade. Pittsburgh sent him to Philadelphia , and he was the backup quarterback to Jalen Hurts when the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. In the 2025 offseason, Pickett was traded once again, as he was dealt to the Cleveland Browns for a fourth-round pick. According to Pickett’s former college coach, Pat Narduzzi, the trade away from Philadelphia is a move that Pickett wanted very badly. “The Eagles did not want to trade him,” Narduzzi said on 99.9 The Fan . “He begged to be traded because he wanted to compete, and he felt like he wasn’t going to have a chance to beat out Jalen Hurts.” Pickett competed throughout the spring and summer of 2025 to be the Browns’ starter alongside Joe Flacco , Dillon Gabriel , and Shedeur Sanders . Wherever you place Joe Burrow among the best QBs in the NFL, there’s no denying he’s in the top five. Meanwhile, you can make a strong argument that his backup, Joe Flacco, is the best thrower of footballs coming off the bench. So it’s no surprise that CBS’ Jordan Dajani has the Bengals QB room as the second best in the NFL in his ranking of the five best and five worst QB situations . Here’s some of what he wrote about Burrow: When he remained healthy in 2024, the former No. 1 overall pick led the NFL with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns while throwing just nine interceptions… Burrow is actually the only quarterback in NFL history to register a 100+ passer rating while making zero playoff starts in a three-season span. He’s also been the most-sacked quarterback (242) since entering the league in 2020, if we include sacks taken in the playoffs. Dajani then explained the value of Flacco, writing: The Bengals also have a former Super Bowl MVP and Comeback Player of the Year in their quarterback room, Joe Flacco — who made the Pro Bowl as an alternate last year. This was the final game ever played at Texas Stadium, the building with the hole in the roof and decades of Cowboys memories attached to it. Dallas had a playoff push, a national stage, and a postgame ceremony ready to honor the old stadium. The Cowboys actually started the night the right way. DeMarcus Ware forced a Joe Flacco fumble on Baltimore’s opening possession, and Dallas quickly turned the short field into a two-yard Tashard Choice touchdown. For a moment, it looked like the stadium might get the storybook ending everyone wanted. But Baltimore slowly took control. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Andrei Iosivas has spent his first three seasons buried on a depth chart behind Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. While he's shown the occasional pop for fantasy, most notably as a red zone option in 2024, the insurmountable talent at the top of the room has him entering the final year of his rookie deal as little more than a role player. While dynasty managers with the luxury to do so should continue to hold him in hopes of finding greener pastures through free agency in 2027, Iosivas is not a player who should factor into 2026 redraft plans.
