San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan hasn't won a Super Bowl. That doesn't mean he isn't a great coach. If last season, in which he won 12 games with an injury-ravaged team, didn't prove how good he is at leading the 49ers, this year is doing just that. The 49ers are 5-0 after going to Seattle and beating the Seahawks Sunday night, doing it with a defense leading the charge, rather than the Shanahan-led offense. The 49ers limited the Seattle running attack, forced four turnovers, one of which was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, and had five sacks, the most they've had in a game since 2024. They did it without star pass rusher Nick Bosa. First-year defensive coordinator Raheem Morris is using a much more aggressive scheme than past Shanahan coordinators, and it's showing up in takeaways and sacks. The coverage is tighter. Combine that with Shanahan's offensive wizardry and an MVP-type start for quarterback Brock Purdy, and it's easy to understand why the 49ers sit atop my Power Rankings. Going to Seattle and beating the defending champs sends a loud message to the rest of the league. This team is really good. As for Shanahan, his greatness as a coach might not truly be earned until he wins a Super Bowl. That's just the way it is. He came close when his Jimmy Garoppolo-led 49ers had a lead last against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, only to see Patrick Mahomes rally to win it. This team, provided it stays healthy, has a real shot at getting back there for Shanahan. For now, they are the league's best team with a schedule that might not be as tough as expected before the season. Plus, they already have victories over division rivals in the Rams and Seahawks. This could be Shanahan's year to win one. The bottom of my rankings stays the same. The Miami Dolphins remain at No. 32, but the Tennessee Titans at No. 31 will give them a run for their money this season. Neither team has won a game. Who wins first?

The New York Giants have found their new quarterback to pair with Jameis Winston , as Joe Schoen sent a fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for former No. 10 overall selection J.J. McCarthy . If you were confused or surprised by this, you're not alone. This trade doesn't make sense -- in more ways than one. We knew that McCarthy was on the Giants' list. Not only is there a Harbaugh connection, as John's brother coached McCarthy during his successful career at Michigan, but ESPN reported that he was on New York's short list that included Jimmy Garoppolo , Arizona Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew , San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones and Kansas City Chiefs backup Justin Fields . Maybe McCarthy isn't the worst quarterback on that list, but trading for him maybe makes the least sense out of all those options. The Giants have a prospective franchise quarterback in the injured Jaxson Dart -- unless you want to argue this move means the Giants are interested in McCarthy as their long-term signal-caller. Then, the Giants have one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL in Winston. I'm not claiming this fun-loving walking quote is Nick Foles , but he's better than many of the second-stringers out there. So, is McCarthy an upgrade over him? Or did the Giants throw away a fifth-round pick for another backup? "Really happy, very excited to add J.J. McCarthy," Giants head coach John Harbaugh said on Monday. "Think he's a strong young quarterback. Has some experience in National Football League. Obviously, was a very high draft pick, very talented player, and is going to make us a stronger football team. So excited about it. Think it makes us better and get him in here as soon as we can, get to work on learning the offense. Obviously, that's going to be a challenge. But we'll go to work on that, and that's where we're at." Is McCarthy really going to make this a "stronger football team?" Was this swing even worth it? Let's examine why this trade was confusing. I don't have to prove that McCarthy has struggled through his first three NFL seasons. He famously lost the Vikings quarterback battle to Kyler Murray this offseason, and was demoted to QB3 behind Carson Wentz . In his one season as the starter for the Vikings, McCarthy went 6-4 in a year where Minnesota finished 9-8. That's a pretty decent win-loss record, but McCarthy became the only first-round pick at quarterback since 1970 to finish last in completion percentage and TD-INT ratio in their debut season. It's true that every young quarterback needs some time to develop. After all, it was Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell that once said, "Organizations fail young quarterbacks before young quarterbacks fail organizations." However, his tune changed when it was the quarterback holding the rest of the team back. Minnesota had a top three defense in 2025 and a talented supporting cast headlined by Justin Jefferson . It's understood why O'Connell elected for a change. Completion percentage 57.6% Passing yards per game 163.2 TD-INT 11-12 McCarthy is still learning the position, but now he's going to be asked to enter a new building, learn a new system and make a legitimate impact in the next few months? Is he even an upgrade over Winston? That's definitely not a given. No one is claiming that McCarthy's NFL career is over, but he's in some dangerous company right now. According to the Elias Sports Bureau , McCarthy is just the fourth first-round quarterback over the past quarter century to start 10 or fewer games for the team that drafted them. The others are bona fide busts in Paxton Lynch , Trey Lance and Johnny Manziel . Lynch and Manziel were never traded for, while the Dallas Cowboys made the baffling decision to trade a fourth-round pick to the 49ers for Lance in 2023. He ended up making just one start for the team, so Jerry Jones probably regrets that trade. Here's the real reason the trade doesn't make sense to me. I would imagine the ideal l [... truncated ...]

Giants have various possible options at quarterback (but not many good ones)
With Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart reportedly heading for season-ending knee surgery, the Giants have to make a decision about the quarterback position moving forward. Option A: The Jameis Winston experience, and everything that goes along with it — good, bad, and/or highly entertaining. Option B: Sign a free agent and see if he would be a better option to win games. At this point, however, most guys who are available would be unlikely to be able to start. Jimmy Garoppolo is the best option. Option C: Make a trade. There are some options. Here are some of the ones we noticed after perusing the various rosters and depth charts. Derek Carr: He’s still on the Saints reserve-retired list. A trade would be required, if there’s mutual interest. Anthony Richardson: If the Colts would be comfortable with Riley Leonard as the understudy to Daniel Jones, the Colts could finally get value for the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Joe Flacco: John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with Flacco in Baltimore. And Flacco has repeatedly shown he can still play. Shedeur Sanders: If the Browns are willing to move on from Sanders, Harbaugh possibly would want Shedeur. The Ravens were going to draft him in 2025, but he didn’t want to back up Lamar Jackson. Mason Rudolph: He has played a lot, and he may not have much of a future in Pittsburgh. Sam Howell: He’s the backup to Dak Prescott, and he has plenty of starting experience; the Cowboys could elevate Joe Milton III to take Prescott’s place. J.J. McCarthy: Jim Harbaugh loves him. John Harbaugh could be intrigued by him. Gardner Minshew: If the Cardinals are content to have Carson Beck as the backup to Jacoby Brissett, why not? He has 47 career starts. Mac Jones: He’s in the last year of his contract, and he played well last year in place of Brock Purdy. The Giants also could pilfer a player from a practice squad. Possibilities (not many) include Will Levis (Jets), Josh Johnson (Bengals), Joe Milton III (Cowboys), and Max Brosmer (Vikings)
