Brian Schottenheimer’s first six postgame news conferences this season averaged almost 13 minutes each. His availability Monday night after a 38-21 victory over the Eagles lasted barely 4 minutes. When asked about his brevity, Schottenheimer answered, “I’m great. Excited for our guys.” That may have been Schottenheimer’s response to criticism he drew last week when — in separate interviews — he said, “I know what a great coach I am,” and he called himself an “elite play caller.” “Definitely a hungry, pissed off version of Shotty,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “It’s not like he’s naive. It’s not like he hadn’t heard some noise about him, and whether it’s calling the games or whatever doubt that’s been out there. But we’ve got his back. He knows that. He’s a guy that takes a lot of pride in his job, a lot of pride in his team. “Everybody handles everything different, so I don’t blame him to an extent. We’ve got his back. More importantly, it’s just about us going out there and executing on Sundays.” The Cowboys saved their season, moving to 3-4, but they are only 10-13-1 since Schottenheimer became the team’s head coach in 2025. The Cowboys were 1-7-1 in primetime games under Schottenheimer before Monday night. They had their best performance of the year against the Eagles, though, gaining 416 yards and getting six defensive stops, including a takeaway. Schottenheimer disputed that Monday was a “must-win,” but he did allow that the victory “gets us right back into the hunt in the NFC East.”

Jerry Jones wants Cowboys to stick with the run
On Monday night, the Cowboys ran the ball for 204 yards, while passing it for 212. That was part of the plan. “Our whole thing here is to establish the run ,” owner and G.M. Jerry Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, quoting his in-game comments to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN. “We’ve got to stick with this run.” Later in the segment, Jones confirmed his belief that the Cowboys need to be a run-first team. That approach doesn’t mesh with the whole “GOTI” vibe, but it’s a formula for winning. It keeps the defense off the field, and the defense continues to be a weakness. On Monday night, for instance, the Cowboys gave up 321 yards to an offense led by a quarterback who entered the season as No. 3 on the depth chart. The other question, as raised by Smith on First Take , is whether the Cowboys have lost some confidence in quarterback Dak Prescott. Smith, who spent part of the game sitting next to Jones in his suite, explained that it’s his own interpretation of the situation and nothing Jones said to him. Still, unless the vast majority of those who witnessed last night’s game, Smith had the perspective of hearing directly from Jones while the game was being played. Which makes it very interesting to see how the offense performs for the rest of the season. That doesn’t mean they’re down on Dak. He played very well last night. But it’s easier to play well when the running game is softening up the defense, and drawing a safety or two closer to the line of scrimmage. It hasn’t been working with the Cowboys operating as a pass-first offense. As a run-first offense, it worked on Monday night

The Dallas Cowboys (3-4) were down in the dumps after consecutive primetime losses against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers . Their offense had become stale while Brian Schottenheimer and George Pickens traded barbs during the week . Panic levels were at a fever pitch after Dallas scored below 20 points in consecutive starts for the first time in seven years with Dak Prescott . All of that is now washed away after the Cowboys' 38-21 road victory at the Philadelphia Eagles (2-5) on "Monday Night Football" that all but buried their hated rival this season and put Dallas back on track in their pursuit for their first NFC East division title since 2023. The Cowboys got everything they could have hoped for on Monday in a get-right game against the two-time defending division champs, albeit a battered version of them, quarterbacked by backup Tanner McKee and led by Saquon Barkley on one leg with a hamstring injury. Prescott threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns. Javonte Williams totaled a career-high 150 yards rushing and a touchdown on 25 carries for a 6.2 yards per carry average. CeeDee Lamb led the way with 74 yards receiving and two receiving touchdowns on five catches while Pickens caught a 21-yard diving touchdown. For as beat up as the Eagles were, most of those injuries were on their offense. With Williams rolling, the Eagles had no answer for Prescott, Lamb, Pickens and Dallas' passing game. The Cowboys should feel good about their ability to put Philadelphia out of their misery at Lincoln Financial Field. Oft-injured linebacker DeMarvion Overshown overcame a hamstring that had him sidelined since Week 1 to return Monday night in Week 7 to tally his first interception since 2024. Everything the Cowboys could have hoped for came to fruition while they were able to avoid an avalanche from Barkley, who finished with 62 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Barkley pulled up after an apparent hamstring reaggravation at the tail end of his 29-yard run on the Eagles' opening drive. He had no touchdowns and two interceptions when targeting his dynamic wide receiver duo in Week 6 against the Packers, but against Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's unit on Monday night, he threw three touchdowns to no interceptions when targeting Lamb and Pickens. Dallas' face-of-the-franchise quarterback now has 39 victories in his first 40 starts against the NFC East with 98 touchdown passes to 24 interceptions. That's tied for the most wins in a quarterback's first 50 divisional starts since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger with Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes . After all the handwringing about Pickens' offensive involvement, he's now up to 260 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns across the last three games after just 225 yards and no touchdowns in Dallas' first four games. Javonte Williams: Good to give confidence to keep calling runs
Given the number of factors that go into determining winners and losers in NFL games, it’s hard to pin the Cowboys’ back-to-back losses solely on running back Javonte Williams carrying the ball 23 times in Weeks 5 and 6. Offensive balance is always a good thing, though, and it wasn’t hard to notice a difference in how the Cowboys were attacking the Eagles on Monday night. Williams kept getting the ball and it didn’t feel like a coincidence that they fed an effort that resulted in a convincing 38-21 road win. Williams ran 25 times for a career-high 155 yards and sealed the win with a fourth quarter touchdown. The Cowboys also gave the ball to Tyler Goodson 11 times while Dak Prescott was connecting with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens for three touchdowns through the air. “It was good to give [head coach Brian Schottenheimer] the confidence to keep calling the runs,” Williams said, via the team’s website. “He made a big emphasis on that this week — to get at least 25 rushes in a game. . . . We were just trying to get back to a balanced offense, and I feel like we did a great job tonight. We’ve got a high-powered offense, and when you’ve got G.P., CeeDee, Jake Ferguson, those guys on the outside, I mean, it’s going to open up the running.” The Cowboys only managed 29 points in their losses to the Packers and Buccaneers in the previous two games and that’s not a recipe for success for a team that’s built around an ability to score points in bunches.
