Jeremiyah Love injury update: Cardinals rookie has high ankle sprain, team hoping for Week 1 return
Jeremiyah Love looked as advertised and then some in his preseason debut. The only problem? He didn't emerge from it healthy. The No. 3 overall pick suffered a high ankle sprain on his final touch of the night and is unlikely to play again this preseason, leaving the Cardinals hopeful he can return for a Week 1 contest against the Chargers on Sept. 13, per ESPN's Adam Schefter . But on Saturday, two days after the game, LaFleur said Love would not practice this week or play in Week 2 of the preseason against the Cowboys , per AZ Central's Theo Mackie . In fact, LaFleur did not commit to the former Notre Dame star even being available for Week 1 of the regular season, which is still nearly a month away. "He came in yesterday a little bit more sore than he left," LaFleur said . "He was in great spirits, even yesterday. ... We'll keep him out this week as we let it heal. Arizona still has veteran James Conner and 2024 third-rounder Trey Benson, as well as journeyman Bam Knight and several others. Both Conner (returning from a severe foot/ankle injury) and Benson (knee "flare-up") have been dealing with injuries in the preseason. It's a fair question. Love started and played until there were just seconds left before halftime. Love's 14 touches were by far the most of any rookie drafted in the first four rounds. His 23 offensive snaps were second-most of any first-round rookie skill position player, only Browns wide receiver KC Concepcion (24). After the game, LaFleur said he had planned before the game to get Love double-digit touches and concluded with "I like where he was at with the touches." Jacoby Brissett , his top targets ( Trey McBride , Marvin Harrison Jr . and Michael Wilson ), and the entire starting offensive line all played only one series, a 10-play drive that resulted in an Arizona touchdown. Again, Love played 23 snaps. LaFleur is a first-year coach, and balancing preseason playing time with player safety is a difficult task. Yes, it was an unlucky way for this to turn out, but Love didn't need to be out there in the first place. This is a bit of a triple-whammy for Arizona's rookies. Second-round guard Chase Bisontis tore his MCL in Thursday's win and is out for the season. Carson Beck missed the game due to some rib discomfort, though LaFleur said there's "no concern level really." As for the running back rotation, things have taken a bit of a turn. Arizona appeared to be a potential seller ahead of roster cuts. Conner is yet to take 11-on-11 snaps in practice, but the two-time Pro Bowler is getting closer to a return. With Love and Allgeier ahead of him in the pecking order, though, and the Cardinals not yet ready to compete, he could be an enticing trade candidate when healthy. Jeremiyah Love out at least a week due to ankle injury
Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said on Thursday night that rookie running back Jeremiyah Love could have returned to the team’s preseason game against the Raiders after injuring his ankle, but the injury has turned out to be a bit more serious. LaFleur told reporters on Saturday morning that Love’s ankle is a “little more sore” and that he will miss at least the next week of work as a result. That will keep Love out for next Saturday’s preseason game against the Cowboys. LaFleur would not commit to Love’s return ahead of the team’s third preseason game and said that they will re-evaluate the third overall pick’s status down the line. Tyler Allgeier, James Connor, Trey Benson, Bam Knight, Evan Hull, and Corey Kiner are the other backs in Arizona

We’ll have to wait a little longer for our first chance to see Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love in action. Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said at a Wednesday press conference that Love will not be playing against the Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night. The Cardinals will have three other preseason games to get Love some action ahead of their Week 1 game against the Chargers. Love was the third overall pick in April and is expected to be the lead back in Arizona during his rookie season. Did Cardinals RB Trey Benson have an injury setback?
The Arizona Cardinals were a mess this past season concerning the running back room. Both starter James Conner and his primary backup, Trey Benson, became injured early in the season. What occurred next was that their RB3, Emari Demercado , was forced into the lineup as the new starting running back. His backups then became guys who were lingering on somebody’s practice squad and were suddenly needed to take significant snaps. RELATED: SUDDENLY, THE CARDINALS HAVE A RUNNING BACK PROBLEM The result? Of course, it was a mess. Part of the reason is that the offensive line was ranked #26. No team can be successful with an established run game without a very good line to open holes. With his 4.39 speed, Benson was drafted to complement the bruising style of starting RB Conner. In Week 3, Conner went down when he suffered a foot injury, to which Benson stepped in as next man up. However, in the following game against the Seattle Seahawks , Benson was also lost for the season with a meniscus injury. Benson was originally ruled out for 4-6 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery. Instead of taking over the starting RB role for Arizona , Benson joined Conner on IR. From this point on, Benson’s issues with his injury and rehab have been a mystery. What is going on with him? Where does he stand with his injury status? Is his goal to be ready for training camp? Week 1? This year? Benson had his opportunity to become an NFL starting running back after Conner was injured and then lost for the season. He had a great practice week, started the game, and then went down in the Thursday Night Football matchup after just eight carries and 37 snaps. It wasn’t known right off if the injury needed attention, but the next morning, Benson woke up at 5:00 a.m. with a swollen knee. He called the trainer, who then ordered an MRI. His 21-day window opened for him to return in early December. During this time period, the load was being taken care of by Demercado, Bam Knight , Michael Carter, and Corey Kiner . Knight also ended up on IR with an ankle issue. Kiner was signed off the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings , while Carter had been sitting on the Cardinals’ practice squad. But Benson rushed his rehab. When Conner was announced to be out for the remainder of the season, Benson saw this as his chance to show what he could do at the NFL level after being a stud running back earlier at Florida State. Benson wanted to return, and he didn’t want to waste any time. When his window opened, Benson still wasn’t ready to practice, much less play a live football game. What was not revealed was that Benson had a setback during his rehab, and he didn’t divulge it. When his window opened, and he attempted to practice, the coaches noticed something was wrong. After an examination, they determined that the last thing he needed to be doing was playing football. The end result was that Benson was shut down for the remainder of 2025. Last year’s head coach, Jonathan Gannon, then announced: “We will not activate Trey Benson. (He) just hasn’t progressed to the point that he can go out there and play football right now.” Benson was asked about his rehab and the setback. He told Donnie Druin of Sports Illustrated : “I was feeling good. My window got open, I was feeling good — then boom. I think I was going a little too hard, and then I kind of had a setback. But I put that on me, though.” This meant he had to continue rehab during the offseason instead of coming off his rehabilitation sessions. With the various OTAs and minicamps, Benson was still not participating in regular drills. The Arizona coaching staff was continuing to manage his workload as he worked his way back to full strength. Instead of going through team drills, he was seen working with trainers off to the side. “I put it on me. I think I was going a little bit too hard, and I kind of set myself back. An offensive weapon the Cardinals should consider trading
When the Arizona Cardinals hired Mike LaFleur as their next head coach, they brought in a guy with proven offensive success, having run the same offense at several programs. While the OC of the Los Angeles Rams last year, their offense was ranked #1. That doesn’t happen by chance. It was LaFleur’s job to take the players supplied and meld a good offensive scheme and place players in position to become successful. LaFleur didn’t call plays, but did all of the other offensive coordinator jobs. RELATED: CARDINALS DRAFT JEREMIYAH LOVE IN ROUND ONE The running back room is busting at the seams with players – and talent. Most NFL clubs keep three running backs on their final roster. At times, a fourth athlete will be retained if they have become the club’s kickoff or punt return specialist, or have other special teams value, such as a designated gunner. Currently, the Cardinals’ running back room is as follows: James Conner (age 31), Tyler Allgeier (26), Bam Knight (25), Corey Kiner (24), Trey Benson (23), and Jeremiyah Love (21). Let’s face it: Kiner and Knight better find a usefulness on special teams. That leaves four players. Love will most likely become the new starting running back, and Allgeier is a talented runner who was once the Atlanta Falcons’ starter until they drafted Bijon Robinson in the first round. Allgeier was considered one of GM Monti Ossenfort’s big “splashes” in free agency this past March. Benson is still young, but unproven despite being a third-round draft pick in 2024. He had his opportunity to prove what he can do at the NFL level after Conner went down to injury in Week 3. But Benson only lasted a week until he suffered a meniscus injury in the Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that required surgery. That leaves Conner. Obviously, his age is the first notation. Not that he can’t contribute and produce into his 30s – he can. But he is also coming off a foot injury that eliminated his 2025 season. Don’t get this wrong: most foot injuries heal, and that’s about it. This type of injury isn’t lingering, such as a knee issue or Achilles tear. The point is coming. One of these will have to leave the desert. And since this is quite evident, the Cardinals should look into getting something in return. The first question is: Which player? One aspect of LaFleur’s offense will be the ability to run the ball. He requires it. He loves a running quarterback, needs a competent offensive line, good receiving help from several tight ends, and has to have exceptional running backs. Under former head coach Jonathan Gannon, the quarterback situation never became solved. The offensive play-calling was predictable and not consistent. After three years under Gannon and OC Drew Petzing’s tutelage, the offense was ranked at the bottom or middle of the pack in most categories this past season. Remember, Gannon was a defensive coach, so his focus seemed to be elsewhere, and the offensive production was a roller coaster as the team collected 14 losses in his final season. In the three years of Gannon and Petzing’s reign, the running game went from powerhouse to doghouse, while the passing attack improved each season. 2025: Total offense: #19 Passing offense: #7 Running offense: #31 2024: Total offense: #11 Passing offense: #18 Running offense: #7 2023: Total offense: #19 Passing offense: #26 Running offense: #4 LaFleur is a teacher. He wants his players to succeed on the gridiron, but mostly in life. His approach to the game, as well as his ability to teach concepts, invariably gets the best out of his players. His scheme is tried and true. It is based upon a heavy pre-snap motion with a wide-zone blocking rushing attack. Jet sweeps, bootlegs, play-action, short passes, simplicity for the quarterback, lack of penalties, several tight end sets, and getting holes for the running back to scoot through.
