Lions hand Vikings first loss of the season, Detroit wins 19-15
The Vikings are undefeated no more. Despite losing several players on defense — including linebacker Jack Campbell — the Lions were able to beat the Vikings 19-15 behind an outstanding performance from running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs put the Lions ahead with a 30-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. He finished the game with 153 yards on 23 carries, plus two catches for 15 yards. Sione Vaki was also valuable in the run game, taking 11 carries for 65 yards. Goff finished 18-of-25 for 176 yards with a touchdown and an interception. On the other side, Kyler Murray had a middling day, going 17-of-29 for 210 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His best throws of the day came on a drive in the fourth quarter, with a 51-yard bomb to Jordan Addison leading to an 8-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson. But Murray was also the team’s leading rusher with 35 yards on four attempts, signaling the ineffectiveness of the run game. Murray and the Vikings’ offense continued to struggle to get the ball to Justin Jefferson, who had just five catches for 33 yards with a touchdown on nine targets. The Fox broadcast showed Jefferson expressing some frustration on the sideline toward the end of the game. Of the several injuries suffered by the Lions’ defense, linebacker Jack Campbell’s was the most concerning. Campbell was taken off the field immobilized on a backboard and transported to a local hospital to evaluate a neck injury after going down in the second half. With the win, the Lions improve to 5-2 after consecutive divisional wins. The club will be on the road to face the Dolphins in Week 9. Minnesota falls to 6-1 with its first loss of the season. The Vikings will be at home to face the Bills on Monday night next week

The Lions went for it on fourth-and-1 in a tie game with 4:53 left, and Jahmyr Gibbs was stopped for a 2-yard loss. Lions coach Dan Campbell has faced questions about his unconventional decision. Campbell explained that the Lions had more confidence in their ability to gain 1 yard than risk Jordan Love executing a 4-minute, game-winning touchdown drive. Campbell added that, even if Detroit’s fourth-down gamble failed, the Packers would not be able to run the clock out, leaving the Lions time to respond. It worked out as D.J. Wonnum blocked the chip-shot field goal of Packers rookie kicker Trey Smack, and the Lions won on a last-play field goal. Quarterback Jared Goff said he didn’t “even think twice” when he heard the Lions were going for it deep in their own end. “I think it’s so -- I don’t know the right word — exposing of people who think it’s not the right decision just because it’s in our territory,” Goff said Tuesday on 97.1 The Ticket. “It’s guaranteeing us a chance to win the game no matter what. Whereas, if we punt it, they can do exactly what we did to them on the final drive, and I’m sure they wish they had another chance to touch the ball. “So it’s funny. I think back to a few years ago where we went for that fourth down against Green Bay in a similar situation, fourth-and-1, and we got it with David Montgomery. There was backlash on that, and we converted. I guess no matter what, there will be backlash, so who really cares at this point, right?” In 2024, the Lions went for it on fourth-and-1 at the Green Bay 21 with 43 seconds left. David Montgomery ran for 7 yards, and Jake Bates kicked a 35-yard field goal on the final play for a 34-31 win. “I think when we’re in those situations, we’re so much more comfortable in them than the other teams because we do them more often,” Goff said, “and it is an advantage for us. It’s something that we practice and something that we spend a lot of time on, and we feel very comfortable in those situations.” The Lions lead the NFL in fourth-down conversions (89) over the past five seasons and rank second in attempts (154), according to 97.1 The Ticket. Their conversion rate of 57.8 percent over that stretch ranks seventh. The Lions have converted 61.5 percent of their 13 fourth-down attempts this season. “Again, unfortunately we didn’t convert this one,” said Goff. “We want to get the first down and keep the game moving and finish the game on that drive, but Dan knew that if we were not to get it, OK, they’ll either kick a field goal or they’ll score a touchdown, and then we’ll get the ball back. Now, thankfully, they missed the field goal, and everything was great, but by every measure of everything, it’s the right decision.”

Mike Tomlin supports Dan Campbell's late fourth-down decision
Mike Tomlin has no qualms regarding a decision from Dan Campbell that may have seemed curious on the surface. Facing fourth and one from the Detroit 24 with 4:53 to play, Campbell opted to go for it. The play resulted in a two-yard loss, and a very short field for the Packers. “I thought we would get it, number one,” Campbell said after the game. “I really believed we would get that. Number two, I knew we would get the ball back if it didn’t work out. Those were the two thoughts.” After Sunday night’s Chiefs-Seahawks game, NBC’s Mike Tirico asked Tomlin for his take on Campbell’s decision. “ It centers around elite quarterback play ,” Tomlin said. “When you got elite quarterback play, and particularly when you’re playing elite quarterback play, you want to make sure your guy at least has a chance to have the ball at the end of the game. And that’s what that decision appeared to be about for me. If he punts that ball the way Jordan Love and company has been operating, it’s not possible, it’s probable that they’re gonna matriculate the ball down the field and win the game. And so what he did by going for it, he was either gonna be successful and keep the ball for his quarterback, or he was at least gonna give his quarterback an opportunity to answer. I was always ready to make that decision when I had Big Ben [Roethlisberger], for example, and I was facing another elite quarterback.” The Lions got the ball back because their defense stiffened, forcing a field goal try. And because the Detroit special-teams unit blocked the 35-yard try. But even if the Packers had scored a touchdown, the drive started with 4:50 to play. The Lions would have had a chance to answer. And that’s only if the Lions first failed to gain a yard on fourth down by handing it to Jahmyr Gibbs. It’s another tangible example of the key differences between analytics and feel. The coach, considering all circumstances, knew it was the right call. That said, the age of analytics had made it much easier to do something that would have once been ignored as unconventional, since reliance on the math has torn down the wall between what is and isn’t “normal” for a coach to do. And Tomlin’s past actions give his words even more credence. Via NBC Sports research, Campbell was the first coach to go for it on fourth down inside his own 25 in a tie game since Week 1 of the 2014 season. That day, Tomlin’s Steelers ran a fake punt from their own 20 in a 27-27 game against the Browns. It happened with 9:48 to play in a 27-27 game. The play worked, the drive later stalled at the 50, and the Steelers won with a walk-off field goal, 30-27
