Agent's Take: Why the Patriots and superstar Christian Gonzalez are embroiled in a contract impasse
Conventional wisdom suggested there would be a quick resolution with cornerback Christian Gonzalez's contract once the Seattle Seahawks signed Devon Witherspoon to a market-topping deal on Aug. 16. Witherspoon received a four-year, $132 million contract extension, averaging $33 million per year with $101,255,702 in guarantees where $59,255,702 is fully guaranteed, which are both record marks for a cornerback. That's what happened in the running back market this preseason. Bijan Robinson's three-year, $66.75 million extension, averaging $22.5 million per year and worth a maximum of $75 million through salary escalators, with the Atlanta Falcons served as a blueprint for the Detroit Lions giving Jahmyr Gibbs a three-year, $67.5 million extension, averaging $22.5 million worth up to $75.75 million thanks to salary escalators, within a matter of days. It's been over two weeks since Witherspoon signed. Gonzalez still hasn't gotten a new deal. Both players are represented by Reggie Johnson. It's only natural that Johnson would find Witherspoon's new deal particularly relevant given he negotiated it and the players, who were selected 12 picks apart in 2023's first round, have both become two of the game's best young cornerbacks. Gonzalez has two years left on his rookie contract for $20,928,482. He is scheduled to make $2,809,452 this year and $18.119 million in 2027, which is his fully guaranteed fifth-year option. Johnson is attempting to hold New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft's feet to the fire because he announced at the start of training camp in late July that Gonzalez had been offered a deal that would make him the NFL's highest-paid cornerback. Gonzalez was dismayed at Kraft negotiating through the media as he preferred to keep the contract discussions private. At the time of Kraft's proclamation, the distinction belonged to Trent McDuffie . He signed a four-year, $124 million extension, averaging $31 million per year, in connection with his March trade from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams . The general proposition with Kraft's offer should continue to hold true despite changing cornerback market conditions. Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said that still is the case last week with the most recent offer. It conflicts with reporting from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, who indicated the two sides weren't close to reaching an agreement. Christian "Flight" White, who is Gonzalez's longtime trainer, confirmed Wolf's characterization of the offer in an interview with Boston radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Mazz on Monday. He also expressed optimism that a deal would get done before the Super Bowl LX rematch against the Seattle Seahawks in the regular-season opener on Sept. 9. Making Gonzalez the NFL's highest-paid cornerback is the first obstacle that must be overcome to reach an agreement. The holdup is likely more structurally related than anything else. Witherspoon has phenomenal cash flow in his deal. The deal is front-loaded. Witherspoon is getting 25% of his new money before playing any of his new contract years, which start in 2028. He has 37.88% of his new money through his first new contract year in 2028. In a neutral four-year extension that's neither front-loaded or back-loaded, there would be 25% of the new money through the first new contract year, 50% of the new money through the second new contract year and 75% of the new money through the third new contract year. There are two other players in recent years that have become the NFL's highest-paid cornerback with four-year extensions while having two years remaining on a rookie contract: Patrick Surtain II in 2024 and Sauce Gardner in 2025. The Patriots would probably like the cash flow for Gonzalez to be closer to their respective deals than Witherspoon's. Lions waive RB Jabari Small, C Seth McLaughlin
The Lions created a pair of openings on their 53-man roster on Wednesday. They announced that they have waived running back Jabari Small and center Seth McLaughlin. Small’s departure comes after Isiah Pacheco was placed on injured reserve and leaves the team with Jahmyr Gibbs, Jacob Saylors, and Sione Vaki at running back. Small signed with the Titans after going undrafted in 2024 and spent time on Detroit’s practice squad last year, but has never appeared in a regular season game. McLaughlin was behind Juice Scruggs on the team’s offensive line depth chart. He spent last season on the Bengals’ practice squad. The Lions could look to bolster their receiving corps with one of the open spots. They currently have four players at that position

Lions Place Isiah Pacheco on Injured Reserve
The Detroit Lions announced on Tuesday that they placed running back Isiah Pacheco (back) on Injured Reserve. Pacheco will now have to wait until at least Week 5 to make his Lions debut in 2026. The 27-year-old also missed time in training camp this summer with a sprained MCL in his knee, so the injury issues that plagued his final two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 and 2025 have followed him to Detroit. Pacheco was not expected to see much volume behind three-down workhorse Jahmyr Gibbs, but his fantasy appeal as a late-round handcuff now takes another hit. In Pacheco's absence, Sione Vaki is expected to serve as Detroit's RB2, with Jacob Saylors and Jabari Small fighting for expanded roles as well. Pacheco had a combined 1,765 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in his first two years in KC, adding 57 receptions for 374 yards and another two scores as a receiver. However, he managed to play in only 20 games over the last two seasons and produced 772 rushing yards and only two rushing TDs on 201 carries in the last two years

"I'm comfortable with those guys. And I just like the thought of having a guy in our system, think that's important. Knows our terminology, knows our guys, knows the protections. Just kind of knows it all, man. Understands our quarterback and how he thinks. I just think that's important." Saylors, who has seen the Lions' heaviest running back rush share in each of the past two preseasons, ran for 100 yards on 17 carries in Saturday's 25-16 win over the Colts, and he is now a player to pay attention to as a potentially critical handcuff to begin the 2026 season

Whether you’re the type of 1.01 who lets the league know ahead of time who you’re picking, or you make them all wait, making the first selection can be both exhilarating and nerve-racking. Knowing that 22 top-notch players will be gone before your next selection adds a lot of pressure to getting that first pick correct. In the following rounds, however, drafting from this position grants you opportunities to affect the shape of the draft. We will be using FantasyPros’ Real-Time ADP as a reference for this exercise in a 12-team, PPR draft. Let’s dive in. The case for Bijan Robinson as the best pick in fantasy football is not a hard argument to make. The former Longhorn ranked first at his position in the following Player Profiler efficiency metrics: Yards per Touch, Evaded Tackles, Yards Created, and Production Premium. Robinson put up a whopping 21.8 fantasy points per game (FPPG) in 2025. He did so behind an offensive line that ranked 26th in run block rating at 45. That line is primed for a jump in 2026. It’s a unit not devoid of talent, anchored by four-time All-Pro Chris Lindstrom. After a season marred by injuries and inconsistent play, longtime OL Coach Bill Callahan was brought in this offseason. Bijan Robinson’s Explosive Rating The other popular choice at 1.01 this year is Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs. It’s tough to push back too hard against this stance; Gibbs is an amazing back. However, the recent injury to Lions’ center Cade Mayes and the Falcons’ tighter consolidation of targets make me more comfortable pushing my chips in on Robinson. After bursting onto the scene as a rookie in 2024, Malik Nabers saw his second season cut short in Week 4 when he suffered an ACL tear . Still, in the four games he played last year, the offense clearly ran through Nabers. His 28.2% target share, 55% deep target share, 43.5% first-read target share, as well as his 22.5% rate of slot snaps paint a clear picture. The former No. 6 overall pick is on track to be back for Week 1. After recently returning to full-speed team drills, the young star wideout needs to log some full-contact practices. A healthy Nabers is an absolute steal at this draft price. To that point, his real-time ADP is 28.4. This leaves us some room as we expect a bump up on draft boards in the coming weeks DeVonta Smith’s Athletic Profile Last season, DeVonta Smith finished just outside of WR2 range with an underwhelming 11.9 FPPG. That was while playing behind A.J. Brown on a malaise offense that ranked 19th in scoring and 24th in yards gained. This year, Brown is gone, and the Eagles also brought in a new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion. Mannion may be a first-time OC, but I’m relatively certain we won’t see a four-verticals call against a Cover-4 defense with the game on the line. With a new-look offense and a clear role as the WR1 on his own team, the former Heisman winner from Alabama is poised to reach new heights this year. Selecting him here as your second wide receiver will net you one of the most dangerous combos at the position in your league. Smith is one of my favorite clicks this year. Tyler Warren came out of the gates strong as a rookie. His 112 targets, 88.3% snap share, 500 routes run, 21 red zone targets, and 80 first-read targets were all top five among tight ends. It doesn’t stop there; his 474 yards after catch ranked second, hinting at his big-play ability. For the 2026 season, this offense is sans Michael Pittman. He went to Pittsburgh and took his 111 targets with him. Pittman did most of his work at the intermediate level, as shown by his 8.2 aDOT. Warren (along with Josh Downs) likes to work in that same general area, though Warren’s aDOT was a bit lower last year (5.4). There were 11 NFL players whose stellar performance earned them inclusion on the Associated Press' All-Pro teams for the first time last season. That's nearly a quarter of the prior year's first and second teams that were turned over. With that in mind, CBS Sports explores which offensive players may be next to blossom and reach All-Pro status: Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert have yet to make an All-Pro appearance, so those are options for this category, but also not in the spirit of the exercise. The intended purpose is to project a player who has yet to reach his peak. Caleb Williams ' first season under head coach Ben Johnson was fruitful, but the encore should be even better if his offensive line protection holds up. Williams has a better understanding of the offense and has had more time to develop relationships with primary pass catchers Rome Odunze , Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland . The key for the USC product will be finding consistency while maintaining the ability to make downfield plays late in the down of which others are incapable. Six of the nine quarterbacks who were named All-Pros over the past five years were first-round picks. Williams was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft . Jahmyr Gibbs is the running back most likely to be named an All-Pro who has not already been so. Although the team signed Isiah Pacheco in free agency, the trade of veteran David Montgomery feels like Gibbs taking ownership of the role in the Motor City. The franchise is hoping the arrival of new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing can re-instill some of the magic that departed with Johnson. Gibbs has accounted for 1,800-plus all-purpose yards in each of the past two years. A candle is still lit for Ashton Jeanty, and while the trio of Quinshon Judkins , Breece Hall and De'Von Achane have battled injuries, they are more than capable of ascending to this level. As you're reading this, Arizona's Jeremiyah Love is dealing with a high ankle sprain, but he has three-down capabilities, and Arizona is clearly content giving him the bulk of the carries. Feature backs may be returning to the NFL. There have been at least a dozen 1,000-yard rushers in each of the past four seasons. There had been only two such seasons dating back to 2015. Of the nine running backs named All-Pros over the past five years, eight were taken in the first or second round; Kyren Williams ( Rams ), a fifth-round pick, was the exception. The only 6-foot-4 All-Pro receiver over the past five years was Tampa Bay's Mike Evans . Drake London would buck that trend. The former USC Trojan is entering his first season with Kevin Stefanski as head coach. Aside from tight end Kyle Pitts and London, Atlanta's pass catchers are Jahan Dotson , Olamide Zaccheaus and third-round pick Zachariah Branch . If London puts together a full season -- as opposed to the five games he missed last season -- then he may finish closer to the 158 targets he accumulated in 2024; in that season, he finished fourth in receiving yards. Thirteen of 17 All-Pro receivers have been taken in the top 100. When exploring the four who were not ( Stefon Diggs , Puka Nacua , Tyreek Hill and Amon-Ra St. Brown ), two likely would have been taken earlier if not for off-field concerns (Hill) and injuries (Nacua). The Texans ' Nico Collins and the Giants ' Malik Nabers are a few others who fit the mold of a first-time All-Pro. There is one less mouth to feed in Chicago's offense with DJ Moore traded to Buffalo, but wide receivers Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze may eat away at a portion of those newfound targets. Colston Loveland tallied 58 receptions for 713 yards and six touchdowns last season. Will new opportunities lead to the requisite statistics for him to ascend to All-Pro status? Green Bay's Tucker Kraft , Cleveland's Harold Fannin Jr . and Indianapolis' Tyler Warren are also worth consideration for the list. The Lions gave Jahmyr Gibbs a new contract this month that made him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Packers outside linebacker Micah Parsons thinks that was a wise investment. “He’s the fastest person I’ve ever seen on the field,” Parsons said of Gibbs as part of the NFL’s Top 100 Players feature. Parsons has seen Gibbs on the field three times: Twice last year when the Packers faced the Lions, and once in 2023, when Parsons and the Cowboys faced Gibbs as a rookie. Gibbs hasn’t had big numbers in any of those games, which Parsons attributes to the whole defense being focused on him. “You need 11 people running to the ball every play,” Parsons said. “If you don’t rally tackle, there’s no way you’re beating the Lions with him at running back.” The Packers and Lions play in Week 7 and Week 18 this season. Parsons says he and his teammates will have their hands full. “You’re watching the tape like, ‘We’ve got this dude again this week?’” Parsons said. “He’s for real.”
