ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently penned an article about trade value for players across the NFL. He had the following estimations for Jets players. One first-round pick and more: Edge David Bailey, WR Garrett Wilson. Both players came close to the two first-round pick category for me, but Bailey’s concerns holding up against the run might give teams that want to play with light boxes and ask more out of their edge defenders on early downs some pause. Wilson is coming off an injury-impacted 2025 and hasn’t had that truly great season that would launch him into the top tier of wide receivers (although I’d chalk that up to bad quarterback play). One first-round pick: OT Olu Fashanu , OT Armand Membou , TE Kenyon Sadiq. Both Jets tackles might also be close to landing something more than a first-rounder. Membou might be the better player of the two, but Fashanu improved after an uneven rookie season and was much more consistent in Year 2. Fashanu also plays left tackle for the Jets, making him a more valuable proposition in trades. Playing in front of a more stable QB situation would make both tackles look better, but both Fashanu and Membou would be easy first-round picks again in redrafts of their respective draft classes. Missing out : RB Breece Hall , WR Omar Cooper Jr. Reports last season suggested that the Jets would have dealt Hall for a third-round pick, with the best incoming offer only landing as a fourth-round selection from the Chiefs . Cooper was a late first-round pick, and while he plays a premium position, the Indiana product will need to prove himself at the pro level to establish more confidence in that grade to other organizations. I can’t say I disagree with any of the assessments here. Wilson is the team’s one proven star. Bailey’s Draft pedigree makes him worth more than a first round pick. In fact, it’s common sense that other teams would have given up more than a first round pick a few months back in the NFL Draft to move up for him (although nobody would meet the Jets’ price). Recent first round picks who have played effective ball like Fashanu and Membou would likely bring back that first round pick, while Sadiq’s pedigree makes him worth that. Heading into the 2026 season, the Jets have made a series of moves to improve their roster and overall depth, but are they ready to compete for a playoff spot? In this series, we’ll break down the depth chart for every position group. This time, we’ll go in depth at the wide receiver position … Starters: Garrett Wilson , Adonai Mitchell , Omar Cooper Jr. Backups: Isaiah Williams , Arian Smith , Tim Patrick Key additions/losses: Cooper was drafted with the 30th overall pick and Patrick was signed in free agency, while John Metchie III and Tyler Johnson departed in free agency Top performers in 2025: Wilson led the team with 395 yards and four touchdowns on 36 catches, despite only playing seven games 2025 ranking per PFF: Wilson was 36th out of 91 qualifying wide receivers in overall grade With three consecutive thousand-yard seasons to start his career, Wilson has already established himself as a top wide receiver and was deservedly rewarded with a big money deal ahead of last season. However, after a strong start saw him rack up 384 receiving yards in the first five games, Wilson only made two more appearances, leaving with a knee injury in both before being shut down for the rest of the year. The Jets will hope Wilson bounces back in 2026, and they’ve strengthened the personnel around him by bringing in Geno Smith at quarterback and two first-round pass-catchers, including tight end Kenyon Sadiq . Cooper was the other first-round pass-catcher and could start along with Wilson. The pair will have good interchangeability in terms of their ability to produce outside or in the slot. Mitchell was added at the deadline last season and showed some flashes of his potential as the Jets’ top passing game option down the stretch. In addition, Patrick was added recently, giving New York some much needed size and an experienced veteran, which was also something they lacked. Beyond the first four options, the Jets don’t have a lot of experience at wideout, so they could be at a disadvantage if there are a series of injuries. Smith and Williams are core special-teamers, but Smith had a disappointing rookie season while Williams worked his way into the rotation and ended up being voted as the team’s 2025 MVP. Longshot options to unseat either of these players include undrafted rookie Caullin Lacy and last year’s preseason standout Jamaal Pritchett . Arguably, the rotation doesn’t necessarily need to run five or six-deep because New York has tight ends and running backs who are capable of lining up in the slot -- and probably won’t have more than three receivers on the field very often anyway. Mitchell’s history is well-documented. He’s a tantalizing talent who has never reached his full potential, something which is in large part attributed to his struggles with diabetes. Apparently, when he is struggling with the symptoms, it can affect his focus, stamina, and effort level. As he was trying to move up the depth chart in Indianapolis and earn a chance to prove himself, it’s not hard to imagine how frustrating this has been for him. If the Jets can get the condition under control, the upside is practically limitless. In fact, his former wide receiver coach Reggie Wayne once called Mitchell the most talented receiver he’s ever seen. However, it’s clearly not as simple as keeping an eye on his levels, because the Colts knew all about his condition and still struggled to get the best out of him. Last season was Mitchell’s first chance at an extended run of playing time after he was traded to the Jets, and he was productive despite New York's passing game struggles, but did have some lapses. If the lightbulb can come on and Mitchell can prove he deserves to start and be a significant part of the gameplan, it will take the pressure off Cooper to deliver before he’s ready and could open up the passing game to a level not seen in recent seasons. Good morning Gang Green Nation! Multiple sources have recently speculated as to Garrett Wilson’s trade value and the possibility he might be traded. Wilson certainly has significant trade value. He also has not been shy in the past at expressing his displeasure with all the losing the Jets do on an annual basis. However, in 2027 the Jets will likely be drafting a quarterback they hope to develop into a long term starter at the position. Wilson is the only proven receiver currently on the roster. It would seem a poor decision to dump Wilson just when he will be needed most to help develop a future quarterback. In addition, while Wilson has expressed his frustrations with the Jets in the past, he got paid last year with a massive contract extension. Since that extension Wilson has been notably silent about any frustrations he may have. Could that change if the Jets collapse this season? Sure. Wilson pulling a Jamal Adams trying to force the Jets to trade him is not out of the question. However, for now that doesn’t seem to be an imminent issue. If the Jets continue to build and improve, Wilson will likely be part of the Jets’ brighter future. If the Jets collapse and yet another regime change occurs, anybody and everybody might be trade bait for a hypothetical new regime. For now I doubt Wilson is going anywhere this season. While he fell short of the sticks, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce did receive votes for being among the NFL’s Top 10 wideouts in an annual league survey conducted by NFL general managers, executives, and coaches ( via ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler ): Also receiving votes: Alec Pierce, Tee Higgins , DK Metcalf , Terry McLaurin , Garrett Wilson , DeVonta Smith , Ladd McConkey , Brian Thomas Jr. , Jaylen Waddle , Chris Olave The Colts lead wideout was re-signed to a once historic 4-year, $116 million salary earlier this offseason after recording 47 receptions for 1,003 total receiving yards and 6 touchdown receptions this past season. His 21.3 yards per reception average led the league for a consecutive campaign. Pierce is currently recovering from an offseason surgery on his ankle, but the expectation is that he could be ready during the second half of team training camp after an initial 4-6 month timetable for his return. While he remains arguably the league’s premier deep threat, with his ability to separate vertically, high point the football with body control, and make contested, acrobatic catches, Pierce has only continued to improve regarding refining his route tree and becoming a more complete pass catcher collectively. He’ll need to continue to make strides in that regard if he wants to be considered among the league’s Top 10 players at his position. The Colts will assuredly be counting on him for a more volume heavy role next season, especially in light of the departure of longtime veteran wideout Michael Pittman Jr. opposite him
A meaningless game at the end of the regular season appears to have acted as a showcase spot for a now second-year receiver. The Bills claimed Quentin Skinner off waivers, the team announced, after the Jets released the 2025 undrafted pass catcher from Kansas. The Bills released receiver Deven Thompkins in a corresponding move. Skinner, 24, was a three-year starter for Kansas after walking on and put up decent numbers for the Jayhawks, posting 1,584 yards and 11 touchdowns over three seasons. He also led the Big 12 in yards per catch in 2024. He has just one official catch for 10 yards in his NFL career, a ball he caught in the last game of the season against the Bills, thrown by Brady Cook . He also caught a two-point conversion in that game. Skinner, who was released for the second time this offseason by the Jets on Monday, stands at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds and runs a 4.52 40-yard dash. The Bills are remaking their receiver room this offseason after trading with the Bears for DJ Moore . The veteran now tops the depth chart for a position that was a weakness for Buffalo last season. Keon Coleman , who was drafted at the top of the second round in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been a disappointment to this point. It is unclear whether Coleman will even start this year, as Moore will start outside, with Khalil Shakir expected to be the slot receiver and Joshua Palmer projected to be the other outside wideout. Skinner will likely be in a fight just to make the Bills roster. The Jets roster includes star Garrett Wilson , Adonai Mitchell and rookie newcomer Omar Cooper Jr. as targets for returning quarterback Geno Smith . The Jets also have rookie Kenyon Sadiq listed as their starting tight end on their latest projected depth chart. Josh Allen and the Bills are the favorites to win the AFC East, and the Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl appearance and are expected to be formidable again
Through the summer, we will be counting down the Jets roster player by player. We continue the series by discussing Arian Smith. Name: Arian Smith Number: 82 Year With Jets: 2nd Projected Role: Depth wide receiver and special teams coverage player His 2025: The Jets selected Smith with a high fourth round pick in the NFL Draft. I personally was shocked by the selection. There wasn’t much obvious to suggest that Smith should have been anything higher than a priority undrafted free agent. He didn’t have much production in college. He was undersized, and his game was unrefined. Other than timed straight line speed, there weren’t many obvious pluses that Smith was bringing to the table. Sometimes a team seemingly reaches but strikes gold because it knows something the general public doesn’t. If this was the case with Smith, it didn’t reveal itself in year one. The Jets had an offense with nothing proven at receiver aside from Garrett Wilson , who missed half the season with injury. The ground was fertile for a young player to step up and show he belonged. Smith managed only 7 receptions all season long for 52 yards. Perhaps most ominously, he lost playing time after the team acquired Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie near the trade deadline. It’s one thing to lose snaps to Mitchell who had flashes. But it can’t be a good sign for Smith that he rated lower than Metchie on the depth chart considering the team passed on bringing Metchie back on a cheap contract. After the addition of Omar Cooper in the NFL Draft, there doesn’t seem to be a path for Smith to see many snaps on offense. Even using his speed for manufactured touches in space is likely off the table. The Jets have Isaiah Williams for that. 2026 will be a success if: Smith develops into a special teams ace. I think you have to get past the way Arian Smith was acquired. Everything we have seen both before and since the 2025 NFL Draft suggests the Jets reached massively picking him at 110th overall. He is unlikely to ever justify that slot. Barring a string of injuries at wide receiver, he probably won’t get more than a handful of snaps on offense. Where he can help the Jets potentially is on special teams. He was by all accounts and excellent gunner on punt coverage in college. The trade of Irv Charles to the Seattle Seahawks takes Smith’s top competitor for that spot away. While Smith is unlikely to make much of an impact on offense, the Jets showed a preference last year for special teams standouts filling their last few roster spots. That could be Smith’s ticket to make a contribution. I don’t think he’s a lock to make the team by any stretch of the imagination, but at this point I would make him a slight favorite to earn that job. Odds of making the roster: More Likely Than Not (51-75%)
Development is not always linear, but neither are career trajectories. To a varying degree, several NFL players have had productive starts to their respective careers before facing adversity; whether that be injuries, coaching changes, etc. How they respond to that adversity sets the course for the remainder of their respective careers. Who are some of the candidates to restore their legacies in 2026? It should be noted that this does not include players who could surge for the first time. For example, Jaguars cornerback Travis Hunter Jr. is one who has more to give this season. Chargers center Tyler Biadasz and Eagles safety Reed Blankenship had also been considered, because of public narratives. Biadasz was outright released by Washington whereas Blankenship had been a sacrificial piece to the Eagles defense. Those are two good candidates to break through prior narratives, but neither had been down so bad last season that it would justify a 'resurgence.' Without further ado, here are the veterans who could experience a return to glory in 2026: After starting 29 regular-season games over his first two seasons, Burford has been limited to just nine starts between the 2024 and 2025 seasons with the 49ers . Playing alongside Trent Williams had been a good situation, but Burford now steps into a better situation sandwiched between Kolton Miller and Tyler Linderbaum . There are deficiencies in Burford's game, but new head coach Klint Kubiak had done a good job relieving some of the stress his offensive line shouldered through the scheme. Dell averaged 49 receptions each of his first two seasons out of Houston, but suffered a significant injury that cost him all of the 2025 season. He had been an explosive threat in the Texans ' offense and was a popular outlet for C.J. Stroud . There are suddenly more mouths to feed in the pass game after the team sunk Day 2 picks into Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel last offseason to go along with Nico Collins . The expectation should not be for Dell to be a high-volume target in his first season back, but the hope is that he can stretch the field and set the table for the rest of his career. Greenlaw parlayed a fruitful career with the 49ers into a lucrative contract from the Broncos . In his lone season with Denver, Greenlaw missed nine games, but had been productive in his limited availability. Durability has been an issue for the 29-year-old, but returning to the system that developed him, alongside Fred Warner , may help get back on an upward trajectory. Former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris was hired to replace new Titans head coach Robert Saleh. Kohou had been a bright spot in a deficient Miami secondary but he missed the entire 2025 season recovering from an injury. He had missed just four combined games over the first three seasons of his career. The Chiefs ' supporting cast will be better than his time with the Dolphins , so that could lead to more opportunities to turn over the ball. Kohou will be asked to fulfill a slot role that had previously been filled by Trent McDuffie and Chamarri Conner . L'Jarius Sneed had also been a consideration upon coming back to Kansas City following a brief stint in Tennessee. However, there is no guarantee he wins a starting position over Nohl Williams and Mansoor Delane . LaPorta's production has declined each year in the NFL following his breakout rookie season when he managed 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season, he missed eight games and finished with 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns. The entire Detroit offense suffered a setback last season post-Ben Johnson, but LaPorta should be revitalized by new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. Petzing's own offense with the Cardinals and roots dating to Cleveland suggest the tight end will be heavily utilized in the pass game. The Jets drafted tight end Mason Taylor in the second round in 2025, so some might wonder how well he took the news that they used a first-round pick on a player at the same position this year. Kenyon Sadiq's arrival was not met with a negative response from Taylor, however. The presence of offensive coordinator Frank Reich has something to do with that. Taylor said this month that he sees "endless opportunities" to make plays in Reich's offense because the coach "likes to use" tight ends and those opportunities will be enhanced because wide receiver Garrett Wilson is also going to be on the field. "Everyone's going to have their role and I just think it's going to be really exciting because we’re going to be unstoppable actually because there's so many options and if you want to shut down the tight ends, then there's Garrett and the receivers," Taylor said, via the team's website. Unstoppable is rarely a term associated with Jets offenses and quarterback Geno Smith 's recent play will make it hard for some to share Taylor's optimism, but the addition of Sadiq and first-round wideout Omar Cooper to Taylor, Wilson and running back Breece Hall gives the Jets a more complete set of weapons than they had to work with last season
