The NFL has approved changes to its international scheduling, allowing up to 10 games per season and removing the ability for teams to protect two home games from international play. This suggests a future with more marquee matchups and headliner teams featured in global games
Aaron Rodgers is officially back with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After months of consternation about his future, in the end, all it took was a report that the Steelers were growing weary of Rodgers “will he, won’t he” routine for him to come to the party, sign his one-year deal, and cement that he’s playing in 2026. Funny how that works. This puts the whole Rodgers mess to bed, at least for another season. Now the Steelers can move ahead with some sort of certainty at the quarterback position after staring down the gun of potentially needing to start Mason Rudolph , Will Howard , or rookie Drew Allar — functionally ending the team’s season before it begins. The question now pivots to what is the ceiling of this team with Rodgers at the helm, and could this end up being a massive mistake? The question of whether or not this is the correct move is couched wholly in one incontrovertible fact: Every NFL team needs to rebuild eventually. It’s a reality the Steelers have been staving off since Ben Roethlisberger ’s retirement following the 2021 season, and to their credit, the organization has been competitive — but there’s also been a ceiling when it comes to quarterback. Whether it was Kenny Pickett , Russell Wilson , Justin Fields , or Aaron Rodgers, the team has been a consistent playoff team, but that’s where the success ends. The Steelers have been bounced in the Wild Card round during their last five playoff appearances, and you need to go back to 2017 to find the last time Pittsburgh made it out of the opening round. With the addition of Michael Pittman Jr. there’s no question this is the best receiving corps the team has had in years, and with Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle the team has a fascinating one-two punch at running back for this upcoming season. Now it’s time to talk brass tacks: Is this new-look Steelers team demonstrably better for bringing back Aaron Rodgers, and what is their ceiling? By Mark Schofield After months of speculation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have their quarterback for the 2026 season. Aaron Rodgers ended that speculation, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with the Steelers over this past weekend. Rodgers is already back at work, having been spotted inside the facility as the team opens OTAs this Monday morning. But how much does Rodgers move the needle for the Steelers at this point in his career? Based on last season, probably not much. While Rodgers represented arguably the best option for the Steelers at the most important position in the game, that is also a relative concept. After all, beyond Rodgers the Steelers were looking at second-year quarterback Will Howard, rookie Drew Allar, or longtime backup Mason Rudolph. Given that, Rodgers is the best option. But this is still a quarterback that posted an Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt of 6.3 last year – ranking him 18th among qualified quarterbacks in the NFL – with a QBR of 44.4, which ranked him 27th in the league. When you look at Quarterback Efficiency , a metric that compares both Expected Points Added per Pass and Completion Percentage over Expectation, you see the rest of the picture. Here is that chart, courtesy of RBSDM.com : Last year Rodgers was, at best, a league-average quarterback. How much does a league-average quarterback, one year older, move the needle for the Steelers? Probably not much, in a crowded AFC field and in particular a difficult AFC North, with the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals expected to be tough opponents this year, and the Cleveland Browns coming off a very impressive offseason. What could be a saving grace for the Steelers is that the AFC North is paired with the NFC South this year for non-conference games, which could help their record a bit. But one particular stretch of their schedule stands out: A run following their bye week, which sees Pittsburgh play at Cincinnati, at Philadelphia , against Denver on a short week, against Houston, at Jacksonville , and against Baltimore. Those six

Even for a slow weekend, initial accounts on social media of free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers supposedly getting ice cream with multiple Steelers players in Pittsburgh didn’t initially move the needle. Beyond the basic fact that bullshit is currently ubiquitous on Twitter, it wasn’t entirely clear that it was Rodgers — or that the video posted by @brogey412 was recent (the presence of pumpkin on the menu sparked a side debate as to when the video was taken). Now that multiple members of traditional media are passing it along , it’s worth a mention. It’s unclear what it all means. There’s been no indication that the Steelers and Rodgers have agreed to terms on a contract. Or that he has visited the Steelers. Or that anything is imminent. It shows only that Rodgers was physically in Pittsburgh as of last night. Which is no different than where he was a week ago. That said, OTAs start Monday. If Rodgers signs and shows up, he’ll be officially joining the team several weeks before he did a year ago. In 2025, he arrived for the mandatory minicamp that capped the offseason program. If he signs by Monday, he’ll be available for the full slate of OTAs and the mandatory minicamp. It’s possible Rodgers simply waited until the schedule was released, in order to prevent the league from giving the Steelers a more burdensome schedule of standalone games. Two years ago, the NFL saddled Rodgers and the Jets six early-season prime-time games — and a pair of short weeks — under the rationale that “ the Jets kind of owe us one ” given Rodgers’s Week 1 torn Achilles tendon in 2023. As it stands, the Steelers have four night games. That decision possibly presumes they’ll have Rodgers; without him, the Steelers arguably don’t have a quarterback room that is ready for prime-time. Regardless, Rodgers apparently is still in Pittsburgh. Whether (or perhaps when) he’ll be signing with the Steelers remains to be seen

The Cincinnati Bengals have been active and unconventional this offseason. They’ve done things fans have been seeking from them for years. And now they’re getting recognized for it. Most recently, Adam Schein, host of the New York Post’s “Schein Time” has named the Bengals his winners of the 2026 offseason. “I’ve been in love all season,” he began in a post. “But I think the big winner after NFL schedule release… The 2026 Cincinnati Bengals.” Schein didn’t provide much reason as to why he feels this way in the post. But Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano went into more detail in a piece he wrote about the winners and losers of the schedule release . Vacchiano noted that injuries to Joe Burrow and slow starts have hurt the Bengals in recent years. With Burrow currently healthy, they’re set up for a decent start and “an incredibly strong finish”. The analyst said the Bengals have “semi-easy wins” in the form of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , Pittsburgh Steelers , and Miami Dolphins in their first five games. “But it’s what happens from Week 8 on where the magic occurs,” Vacchiano continued. “They face just two teams that are projected to finish above .500 in their final 12 games, and they get both of those — December games against the Chiefs and the Ravens — at home. They also will play each of their first seven games at 1 p.m. on Sundays, too.” Others have taken note of how Cincinnati is better positioned to compete this year. Steve Palazzolo and Sam Monson put the Bengals among this offseason’s winners . Among other things, they like how the team went out and fixed their defensive line

Even though Bryce Young and co. went 8-9 and lost in Week 18 to their division rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers , the scrappy team advanced to the postseason. Once there, their odd duck fairytale season came to a screeching halt after they were bested by the Los Angeles Rams 34-31 in the NFC Wild Card Round, which also happened to be the Panthers’ first playoff appearance since January 2018. “When we came here as a staff, our whole goal was to create a brand of football that we can be proud of. And that’s what we’re doing,” head coach Dave Canales said in a postgame press conference. “We’re building something from the ground up—from the basics, the fundamentals and the technique and all that and trying to build it the right way.” And, now, that the NFL has rolled out their 2026 schedule, we know who Canales’ club will face next season. The NFL is absolutely stacking the Thanksgiving slate this season, according to reports. The Buffalo Bills will host the Kansas City Chiefs on NBC on Thanksgiving night, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. That comes after the Detroit Lions open the day hosting the Chicago Bears on CBS, also per Schultz, and the Dallas Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles on Fox, which was announced on Monday. The NFL is also having a dedicated Thanksgiving Eve game for the first time ever, with the Green Bay Packers visiting the Los Angeles Rams on Netflix. The full NFL schedule release show will be Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on NFL Network and ESPN. Find NFL tickets on Gametime Bills-Chiefs is always a blockbuster regular season matchup, though this one features an early cloud hanging over it in the form of Patrick Mahomes ’ health. His rehab is reportedly going well, and there will be plenty of time to get back up to speed before visiting Buffalo, but if he’s not the Mahomes of old then this matchup loses some sizzle. Still, it’ll be intriguing to watch the Chiefs deal with the Bills in their brand new stadium. That’s four games featuring eight teams that all are expected to be playoff contenders, not to mention some pretty major draws. Things don’t always play out the way it seems they will on paper, especially in the NFL, but there’s no denying the NFL is throwing its scheduling weight behind the Thanksgiving holiday. There’s also the Black Friday game, which hasn’t been announced yet but is a good bet to feature at least one strong draw. What does that leave for Week 12 Sunday? Of course there are still buzzy teams left over, like the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks , the reigning AFC champion New England Patriots , the popular Pittsburgh Steelers , and more. Even with options like those, it may well be a thinner slate that weekend overall. The NFL has clearly decided it’s OK with that. While everyone is stuffing their faces on Thanksgiving Eve and Day, they probably will be too
As part of the NFL’s slow-dripping of its schedule release, the league announced its full international schedule on Wednesday. Based on the slate of home teams, the final possibilities for the Green Bay Packers to play globally in 2026 were either as the road team against the Detroit Lions (Germany) or New Orleans Saints (France). With that being said, there were previous statements made that the Lions wanted to protect the Packers game from being an international contest, so it was doubtful that Green Bay would be pegged to that slot. So when it was announced officially that the New England Patriots were going to take on the Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers were going to play the Saints, it officially ruled the Packers out of international play. Now that the Dallas Cowboys will play a second international game, as the host team in Brazil, Green Bay is tied (with two games played) as the club with the fewest global contests played in NFL history. While they’ve managed to avoid an overseas game in 2026, it’s setting up for the Packers to be “due” for an international game in future seasons. The league will release its full schedule on Thursday at 7 pm ET
Sponsored by Fanduel The 2026 NFL schedule is set to be released Thursday night and while the schedule leaks have already begun , the Texans are slated to face one of the easiest schedules in the league next season. Last season the Texans were awarded four primetime games, two Monday Night Football, one Sunday Night Football, and a Thursday Night Football matchup. The Texans were then given a Saturday day game against the LA Chargers Last year’s Primetime games: Week 2: MNF (vs Buccaneers ) – Loss Week 7: MNF (at Seattle ) – Loss Week 12: TNF (vs Bills) – Win Week 14: SNF (at Kansas City ) – Win Week 17: Saturday (at LAC) – Win With Houston ’s vaunted defense finally receiving the national attention it deserves this offseason, fans will be eager to watch the Texans swarm opposing offenses all year long. To project how many primetime games Houston could receive, it helps to look at last season’s schedule for context. The Kansas City Chiefs led the league with eight primetime appearances, including an international matchup. The league average sat at 3.5 primetime games per team, though the Saints , Browns , and Titans received none. Meanwhile, 10 teams appeared in at least five primetime contests, with the Cowboys ranking second behind Kansas City with six appearances. We already know the Texans will travel overseas to face the Jacksonville Jaguars . While that game will not count as a primetime matchup, it will still serve as a marquee showdown between the AFC South’s two playoff representatives from the 2025 season. I predict the Texans will have five primetime matchups in 2026, featuring multiple NFC East and AFC North opponents. Houston Texans vs. Dallas Cowboys – Monday Night Football Houston Texans at Philadelphia Eagles – Sunday Night Football Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers – Thursday Night Football Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens – Sunday Night Football Houston Texans at Green Bay Packers – Monday Night Football Indianapolis Colts Tennessee Titans Jacksonville Jaguars Baltimore Ravens Cincinnati Bengals Buffalo Bills Dallas Cowboys New York Giants Indianapolis Colts Tennessee Titans Jacksonville Jaguars Cleveland Browns Pittsburgh Steelers LA Chargers Philadelphia Eagles Washington Commanders Green Bay Packers As for predicting the full slate of games, Week 18 is solely reserved for AFC South rivals. The Houston Texans have either played the Colts or the Titans the last week of the season since 2019, with the Jags being the opponent in 2018. Considering Jacksonville and Houston were the two AFC South representatives in the playoffs, I predict the NFL schedule creators will pit the two team against each other to end the season. The Texans will play eight games against playoff teams, including two against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The schedule is fairly manageable because the Texans came in second in the AFC South, which means they face the second-ranked AFC teams from last year along with the Green Bay Packers as their 17th game
