Revisiting Panthers' blockbuster trade with Bears to draft Bryce Young: Chicago, Caleb Williams won big
This week, the No. 1 overall picks from the 2023 and 2024 NFL Drafts will be under the bright lights of primetime. Bryce Young and the Panthers open Week 8 with a crucial "Thursday Night Football" game against the Packers , and Caleb Williams and the Bears close out the week with a "Monday Night Football" showdown against the Seahawks . Both quarterbacks will face tough road tests against conference foes with postseason ambitions. And both quarterbacks are forever intertwined. Though Young is forever tied to 2023 No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud , and Williams is forever tied to the loaded 2024 class that included Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye , Young and Williams are a byproduct of one another. In March 2023, the Panthers moved heaven and earth to jump from the No. 9 pick to the No. 1 pick, an all-time blockbuster that shaped not only the two franchises but the league as a whole. With Young hoping to get Carolina back on track Thursday, we look back on the trade. The Panthers were one of several teams exploring a trade up for a quarterback, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported at the time . Carolina won out with a huge package. At the time, the Bears were committed to Justin Fields as their starting quarterback, even though they would have had plenty of options in the draft had they chosen that direction: Young, Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis were considered among the top prospects. But Fields, the No. 11 pick in 2021, had only been in the league two years. The results had been poor, but so, too, were the surroundings. Fields' top receiver in 2022 was Darnell Mooney , who failed to crack 500 receiving yards. Fields, who nearly broke the quarterback rushing record in 2022, would get one more year, and bringing Moore into the equation was crucial for Chicago. He was coming off a down 2022 season but had cracked 1,100 receiving yards each of the three years prior. The Panthers had been a mess ever since David Tepper bought them back in 2018. Tepper fired Ron Rivera midseason in 2019 and hired Matt Rhule in 2020, only to fire Rhule early in the 2022 season. In between, he fired GM Marty Hurney in 2020 and hired Scott Fitterer to fill that role, creating no coach-GM alignment. The Panthers went 29-53 across Tepper's first five years of ownership. They also cycled through quarterbacks after Cam Newton's decline and eventual departure. From 2018-22, Carolina had a different leading passer every season: Newton in 2018, Kyle Allen in 2019, Teddy Bridgewater in 2020, Sam Darnold in 2021 and Baker Mayfield in 2022. When Carolina moved up to No. 1 in 2023, it didn't know who it would take, but it thought the move "gave it the most options," according to Schefter. "Should the Panthers fall in love with a couple of quarterbacks, they would consider trading back a spot or two, according to a league source," a story by ESPN's Courtney Cronin and David Newton read . The Panthers ultimately landed on Young, though later reports said that coach Frank Reich, hired months earlier, preferred Stroud. While Tepper adamantly defended that the entire group was aligned on Young , he also curiously said that wasn't always the expectation. "Originally, we thought we were going to the No. 2 pick, and we thought we'd get C.J.," Tepper said . "We thought the Texans were going to take Bryce. And listen, we preferred Bryce. He was our No. 1 choice. We had a lot of conviction." That mess paled in comparison to the mess playing out on the field in Young's rookie year. Young struggled mightily, and an underwhelming offensive line and receiving corps didn't help. Young took 62 sacks, and his 4.6 net yards per attempt was — and still is — the worst since 2010 Jimmy Clausen . A collection of highly knowledgeable offensive minds — Reich, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and offensive line coach James Campen — never melded. Giants have various possible options at quarterback (but not many good ones)
With Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart reportedly heading for season-ending knee surgery, the Giants have to make a decision about the quarterback position moving forward. Option A: The Jameis Winston experience, and everything that goes along with it — good, bad, and/or highly entertaining. Option B: Sign a free agent and see if he would be a better option to win games. At this point, however, most guys who are available would be unlikely to be able to start. Jimmy Garoppolo is the best option. Option C: Make a trade. There are some options. Here are some of the ones we noticed after perusing the various rosters and depth charts. Derek Carr: He’s still on the Saints reserve-retired list. A trade would be required, if there’s mutual interest. Anthony Richardson: If the Colts would be comfortable with Riley Leonard as the understudy to Daniel Jones, the Colts could finally get value for the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Joe Flacco: John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with Flacco in Baltimore. And Flacco has repeatedly shown he can still play. Shedeur Sanders: If the Browns are willing to move on from Sanders, Harbaugh possibly would want Shedeur. The Ravens were going to draft him in 2025, but he didn’t want to back up Lamar Jackson. Mason Rudolph: He has played a lot, and he may not have much of a future in Pittsburgh. Sam Howell: He’s the backup to Dak Prescott, and he has plenty of starting experience; the Cowboys could elevate Joe Milton III to take Prescott’s place. J.J. McCarthy: Jim Harbaugh loves him. John Harbaugh could be intrigued by him. Gardner Minshew: If the Cardinals are content to have Carson Beck as the backup to Jacoby Brissett, why not? He has 47 career starts. Mac Jones: He’s in the last year of his contract, and he played well last year in place of Brock Purdy. The Giants also could pilfer a player from a practice squad. Possibilities (not many) include Will Levis (Jets), Josh Johnson (Bengals), Joe Milton III (Cowboys), and Max Brosmer (Vikings)

The Jets are placing three players on injured reserve, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports. Wide receiver Arian Smith (knee), defensive lineman David Onyemata (groin) and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball (ankle) were injured in Sunday’s overtime loss to the Packers. The three players must miss a minimum of four games before returning. The Jets have been hit hard at the wide receiver position with Tim Patrick (groin) and Omar Cooper Jr. (high ankle) already on injured reserve. McCrary-Ball is a core special teams player, having played five defensive snaps and 26 on special teams this season. He was carted off the field on Sunday. Darrell Jackson will see more snaps in Onyemata’s absence. In corresponding moves, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post , the Jets are signing wide receiver Malik McClain, defensive end Jack Heflin and linebacker Troy Reeder to the 53-player roster from the practice squad. The team signed quarterback Will Levis, linebacker Jaden Keller, defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk and tight end Cody Hardy to the practice squad and released quarterback Bailey Zappe from the practice squad

The New York Jets have decided to add some insurance at the quarterback position and they did that on Tuesday by signing Will Levis to the practice squad, according to The Ringer . The Jets actually showed some interest in Levis earlier this month. After the former second-round pick got cut by the Titans on Aug. 30, the Jets brought him in for a tryout just a few days later, and although they didn't sign him at the time, they clearly liked what they saw, because they're signing him now. To make room for Levis on the practice squad, the Jets will be releasing Bailey Zappe . Aaron Glenn has made it clear that Geno Smith is the starter, but the backup situation is a little murkier. Cade Klubnik is QB2 in New York, but he's a rookie, so the Jets likely wanted to make sure they had another QB with some starting experience on the roster. In that sense, Levis fits the bill perfectly. The former Titans quarterback has been in the NFL since 2023 and he's started a total of 21 games over the past three seasons. The Titans were hoping that Levis, who was the 33rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft , would eventually be their franchise quarterback, but he never quite developed into that. Although Levis showed plenty of flashes, he was never consistent. In his first start ever for the Titans back in 2023, he threw four touchdown passes, which tied the NFL record for most passing touchdowns in an NFL debut. The problem for Levis is that he only threw four more touchdowns over the rest of a season that saw him start eight more games. The Titans handed him the starting QB job heading into the 2024 season, but he wasn't able to hold on to it. In the first five starts that year, he only threw for more than 200 yards in one game while throwing seven interceptions. The Titans finally benched him and after Week 15 after a game where he turned the ball over four times. After finishing with the worst record in the NFL in 2024, the Titans used the first overall pick to select Levis' eventual replacement in Cam Ward . Levis spent the 2025 season on the Titans' bench, and at that point, it was pretty clear that his time in Tennessee was going to be coming to an end. He ended his Titans career with a 5-16 record in 21 starts. In New York, the 27-year-old Levis will have exactly zero pressure on him. The Jets will likely be hoping that Levis can be a good influence on Klubnik in the QB room

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis is signing with the New York Jets' practice squad on Tuesday, sources told Tom Pelissero of The Ringer. Levis started 21 games for the Titans before missing all of last year with a shoulder injury. He will take the place of Bailey Zappe, who is being released this week. The 27-year-old Levis was drafted in the second round by the Titans in 2023 from Kentucky. In his 21 starts over two seasons in Tennessee, he struggled with decision-making and accuracy, completing 61% of his pass attempts for 3,899 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Levis also added 70 rushing attempts for 240 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He has plenty of arm strength at the QB position, but Levis has quickly become a backup option after a few seasons in the NFL. In New York, he will be the third QB option on the roster behind veteran starter Geno Smith and rookie Cade Klubnik
