The Raiders naming Kirk Cousins their starting quarterback to open the 2026 season was hardly a surprise. While Las Vegas had been projected to draft Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall for months, the team’s brass had said publicly that its preference was for a rookie quarterback to sit and learn behind a veteran. But now that it’s official, Mendoza has become a member of a rare group of quarterbacks from recent years. Mendoza is the first quarterback since Baker Mayfield in 2018 not to start Week 1 after being selected at No. 1 overall. Mayfield’s situation was not particularly unusual at the time, as Jared Goff had been through the same thing in 2016. But since then, Kyler Murray (2019), Joe Burrow (2020), Trevor Lawrence (2021), Bryce Young (2023), Caleb Williams (2024), and Cam Ward (2025) have all been their respective club’s Week 1 starter after being selected at No. 1 overall. Since Matthew Stafford was selected at No. 1 overall in 2009, only Goff, Mayfield, and Mendoza have started the season as QB2. Sam Bradford (2010), Cam Newton (2011), Andrew Luck (2012), and Jameis Winston (2015) all started the season opener. Mayfield made it into a game by Week 3, taking over for an injured Tyrod Taylor to lead the Browns to their first victory since 2016 with a 21-17 victory over the Jets. He took over as Cleveland’s starter the following week. It took longer for Goff to ascend to QB1 for the Rams in 2016, as he began his tenure as Los Angeles’ starter in Week 11 with a 14-10 loss to Miami. Mendoza’s development will remain a priority for the Raiders, even as he won’t receive starters’ reps in the regular season. “ Early work, late work. More meetings ,” Kubiak said on Wednesday. “Plenty of time on the field between drills with [QBs] coach [Mike] Sullivan and [offensive coordinator] coach [Andrew] Janocko. Every player that is not starting the first game, that is helping us on the look team, we’re just trying to find every edge we can find to continue to get him better and his teammates better.” Aside from those selected at No. 1 overall, there are plenty of QBs who haven’t started early and ended up being successful. “I think there are so many examples both ways,” Kubiak said. “I think the most important thing with the quarterback room or any other position is to build competition within the room. That makes players so much better faster than coaching, when they have a guy in front of them that they can look up to and see how something’s done — that’s going to accelerate their growth.” We’ll see when Mendoza becomes Las Vegas’ starter. If Cousins plays well and the Raiders are winning, that might not be until 2027. But history suggests Mendoza will be on the field sooner or later as a rookie

Chicago Bears have a real, actual, NFL quarterback
There were 11 NFL players whose stellar performance earned them inclusion on the Associated Press' All-Pro teams for the first time last season. That's nearly a quarter of the prior year's first and second teams that were turned over. With that in mind, CBS Sports explores which offensive players may be next to blossom and reach All-Pro status: Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert have yet to make an All-Pro appearance, so those are options for this category, but also not in the spirit of the exercise. The intended purpose is to project a player who has yet to reach his peak. Caleb Williams ' first season under head coach Ben Johnson was fruitful, but the encore should be even better if his offensive line protection holds up. Williams has a better understanding of the offense and has had more time to develop relationships with primary pass catchers Rome Odunze , Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland . The key for the USC product will be finding consistency while maintaining the ability to make downfield plays late in the down of which others are incapable. Six of the nine quarterbacks who were named All-Pros over the past five years were first-round picks. Williams was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft . Jahmyr Gibbs is the running back most likely to be named an All-Pro who has not already been so. Although the team signed Isiah Pacheco in free agency, the trade of veteran David Montgomery feels like Gibbs taking ownership of the role in the Motor City. The franchise is hoping the arrival of new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing can re-instill some of the magic that departed with Johnson. Gibbs has accounted for 1,800-plus all-purpose yards in each of the past two years. A candle is still lit for Ashton Jeanty, and while the trio of Quinshon Judkins , Breece Hall and De'Von Achane have battled injuries, they are more than capable of ascending to this level. As you're reading this, Arizona's Jeremiyah Love is dealing with a high ankle sprain, but he has three-down capabilities, and Arizona is clearly content giving him the bulk of the carries. Feature backs may be returning to the NFL. There have been at least a dozen 1,000-yard rushers in each of the past four seasons. There had been only two such seasons dating back to 2015. Of the nine running backs named All-Pros over the past five years, eight were taken in the first or second round; Kyren Williams ( Rams ), a fifth-round pick, was the exception. The only 6-foot-4 All-Pro receiver over the past five years was Tampa Bay's Mike Evans . Drake London would buck that trend. The former USC Trojan is entering his first season with Kevin Stefanski as head coach. Aside from tight end Kyle Pitts and London, Atlanta's pass catchers are Jahan Dotson , Olamide Zaccheaus and third-round pick Zachariah Branch . If London puts together a full season -- as opposed to the five games he missed last season -- then he may finish closer to the 158 targets he accumulated in 2024; in that season, he finished fourth in receiving yards. Thirteen of 17 All-Pro receivers have been taken in the top 100. When exploring the four who were not ( Stefon Diggs , Puka Nacua , Tyreek Hill and Amon-Ra St. Brown ), two likely would have been taken earlier if not for off-field concerns (Hill) and injuries (Nacua). The Texans ' Nico Collins and the Giants ' Malik Nabers are a few others who fit the mold of a first-time All-Pro. There is one less mouth to feed in Chicago's offense with DJ Moore traded to Buffalo, but wide receivers Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze may eat away at a portion of those newfound targets. Colston Loveland tallied 58 receptions for 713 yards and six touchdowns last season. Will new opportunities lead to the requisite statistics for him to ascend to All-Pro status? Green Bay's Tucker Kraft , Cleveland's Harold Fannin Jr . and Indianapolis' Tyler Warren are also worth consideration for the list. CINCINNATI -- Beating up on your younger brother is always fun, so Zac Taylor was probably thrilled with how things unfolded Thursday during Cincinnati's joint practice with Chicago. The Bengals head coach has close ties to the Bears because his younger brother, Press Taylor, is Chicago's offensive coordinator. The Bengals completely revamped their defense this offseason, and after the starters played just one series in the first preseason game , the battle against the Bears' offense represented the first big test of Cincinnati's new-look unit, which features four new starters, including Dexter Lawrence . If the joint practice was any indication, the Bengals need the regular season to start now because the defense looks ready to roll. Here are five takeaways from the joint practice. Although the Bengals defense had some big moments, we're going to start with Joe Burrow because he got into a fight, and anytime a QB gets into a fight, you have to start there. If there's been one common theme around the NFL this year, it's that if you hold a joint practice, there's going to be at least one fight, and that was the case here. There weren't any brawls, but there were a few scuffles, including one involving Burrow. If there's one rule at an NFL practice, it's that you never touch the quarterback, and Dayo Odeyingbo slightly broke that rule. The Bears defensive end got his hands on Burrow and wouldn't let go of his jersey, which caused things to get heated. Burrow wasn't happy with Odeyingbo, and he let the Bears defender know it. Burrow was asked about the scuffle after practice, and he gave an interesting two-word answer. "Shit happens," the Bengals QB said . "That's how practice goes sometimes." Burrow did admit this was the first time since college that he got into a scuffle. "Fun to go at it a little bit," he said. Although it was fun for Burrow, the scuffle was quickly broken up before it could turn into a full-fledged fight. Burrow's teammates were ready to go to battle for him during the scuffle, and that's what Ja'Marr Chase wants to see more of this year. "I don't care what we do, we just better f---ing protect Joe," Chase said after practice. The Bengals were in a feisty mood Thursday, and one reason is that everyone on the roster seems to sense the urgency surrounding the 2026 season. And if they don't realize it, they will soon because Burrow is reminding everyone all the time. "The urgency is very high in the locker room, you can feel it," Burrow said. "It's palpable." Burrow was asked if this is a "now or never" season for the Bengals, and he didn't disagree with that assessment. "I'm tired of saying next year, next year, next year," Burrow said. "This is it. Life is too short to keep pushing things down the road." Burrow threw just one interception against the Bears, and it actually came on the play that started the scuffle. His pass bounced off Mike Gesicki and into the hands of Chicago safety Dillon Thieneman , who came away with the interception. Burrow got some revenge on the next play when he hit Chase for a big gain after the receiver made an impressive toe-dragging catch along the sideline. Overall, Burrow had a strong practice, and his favorite receiver was Tee Higgins , who caught at least six passes. "Tee made some plays today," Burrow said. "That was good to see. We know what kind of player Tee is, and he's going to make big plays in big spots, and we're counting on him." Besides Higgins and Chase, Burrow also made some big throws to Drew Sample and Andrei Iosivas . Although the offense was good, the Bengals have to be thrilled with how their defense played, so let's get to that. There's a reason the Bengals gave up a first-round pick to get Dexter Lawrence back in April, and that's because the team feels he can be a game-changer. There were also ties in 2022 ( Davis Mills and Dak Prescott ), 2021 ( Trevor Lawrence and Matthew Staffford) and in 2020 ( Drew Lock and Carson Wentz ). You will want to check with your sportsbook, but it's pretty standard that if there were a tie that Dead Heat Rules apply. That simply means your wager is divided by the number of tied players and that's how it is paid out. I was rather curious when the last three-way tie was, because obviously that drains your bet even more, and it was in 2007. That Smith is still a starting quarterback in this league, back now with the Jets , at age 35 and after getting benched on an awful Raiders team last season is rather comical to me, but Gang Green doesn't really have any better options. And I think they want to stink in 2026 so they can get Arch Manning or Dante Moore at the top of the 2027 NFL Draft . Smith is the +950 favorite on this prop, and the book is second-most exposed on him, as he ranks No. 2 in handle and tickets. But I would not play that, because there seems to be little chance Smith starts the entire season short of hugely overachieving. Team brass is quite high on fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik out of Clemson, so my guess is that he takes over eventually. Maybe following the team's Week 13 bye when New York is sitting 3-9 or something.
