Chicago Bears rookie third-round wide receiver Zavion Thomas could emerge as "a valuable gadget player on offense" in Chicago in his first year in the NFL while also contributing his 4.28-second 40-yard-dash speed as a returner on special teams, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN. Cronin questions whether head coach Ben Johnson has his next Jahmyr Gibbs, especially after the versatile speedster made plays during the offseason program and was labeled "electric" by teammates as he enters his first year in the league. The 21-year-old out of LSU obviously has big-play abilities because of his high-end speed, but in terms of playing time in his rookie season, that's going to be hard to come by with Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III and Kalif Raymond, and tight end Colston Loveland ahead of him on the depth chart. But if Thomas impresses as a gadget player early on, Johnson will surely manufacture more touches for him. For now, Thomas is merely a deep dynasty/keeper stash who will see most of his playing time on special teams
An offseason of both acknowledgment and rising expectations continues for Bears’ TE Colston Loveland. After being featured among the top 10 players at his position earlier this summer, the 2nd year man can now be found alongside a group of both rookies and veterans poised to make an impact on the retail market. This comes via the NFLPA’s annual “Rising Stars List”, which “forecasts [the] next wave of players expected to drive fan demand and merchandise sales.” As mentioned, the list highlights both rookies and veteran players, with Loveland appearing alongside notable veterans such as Las Vegas Raiders TE Brock Bowers , Buffalo Bills RB James Cook, and New England Patriots DB Christian Gonzalez . Unsurprisingly, the rookie side of the list features a number of highly-drafted players in some big markets, such as Las Vegas Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza, Dallas Cowboys S Caleb Downs , and New York Giants LB Arvell Reese. Loveland’s marketability can be debated, but there’s certainly a strong case to be made in his favor. His strong performance on the field, the home market of Chicago, and the charisma he’s displayed both on and off the field likely serve as the foundation of his place on this list. Heck, he’s even going to be featured in the upcoming Bears-centric Hallmark movie ! This list serves as the latest endorsement of Loveland, and those of us with a rooting interest in the Chicago Bears can only hope that his play in the upcoming season is reflective of all of these offseason expectations. After all, Colston Loveland seems primed for the Pro Bowl this season, Cole Kmet has a decent chance at breaking the franchise reception record for a tight end this year, and rookie Sam Roush was called the best blocking tight end in the draft. The Bears’ 13 personnel could be deadly in 2026. But then I started thinking about the quarterback room. Sure, if QB1 were to go down, the season would be in jeopardy, and the offense would need to change, but that can be said for just about every other team around the league. I’m also extremely confident that Caleb Williams is going to take another step in 2026. I’m also confident that Tyson Bagent would be able to perform better than most QB2s around the NFL (especially with Ben Johsnon calling the shots). The NFL Players Association released its annual Rising Stars list on Tuesday and the first overall pick of this year’s draft is one of the players at the top. Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza is No. 1 on the list of the 10 rookies that the NFLPA projects to be future members of the Top 50 list of licensed player product sales. There is also a list of 10 players with NFL experience who have not been on the Top 50 and it is topped by Saints quarterback Tyler Shough. Mendoza is followed on the list by Cowboys safety Caleb Downs, Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love, Titans wide receiver Carnell Tate, Eagles wide receiver Makai Lemon, Commanders linebacker Sonny Styles, Saints wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, Giants linebacker Arvell Reese, Ravens wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane, and Buccaneers edge rusher Rueben Bain. Chicago Bears tight end Colston Loveland is looking to build off a strong rookie campaign. The 22-year-old registered 58 receptions, 713 receiving yards, and six touchdowns in 16 games with the Bears last season. Like many rookies, Loveland was eased into the mix, but it didn't take him long to surpass Cole Kmet on the depth chart. He's now expected to take on a larger workload with D.J. Moore out of the picture and a full season with Caleb Williams already under his belt. Loveland finished as the TE12 and outside the top-100 last season, but the sky is the limit for him. Brock Bowers and Trey McBride are likely going to be selected ahead of him, but Loveland as the TE3 isn't crazy. The departure of Moore should free up more chances for him in 2026. A finish inside the top-50 seems possible if everything goes right for Loveland next season

In a recent interview done on the popular Youtube show Bussin’ With The Boys, Bears tight end Colston Loveland admitted that he thought he was going to be drafted by the Chargers and reunited with his college head coach, Jim Harbaugh. In the end, Loveland never made it all that close to the Chargers at No. 22 (he was drafted No. 10) and has since found his role with Chicago as one of the up-and-coming young players at the position in the NFL. Loveland and Justin Herbert sounded like a great match in the pros, but the Bolts eventually found their own young star at tight end in Oronde Gadsden II four rounds later. ESPN's ranking of tight ends, based on input from league executives, coaches, and scouts, placed Jake Ferguson as an honorable mention outside the top 10. While praised for his all-around solid play and high catch volume, Ferguson's fumbling issues were cited as a significant reason for his ranking. The Bears have signed tight end Sam Roush to his four-year rookie deal, the team announced on Friday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report that the deal will be worth $7.35 million over the course of Roush’s four seasons. The signing of Roush, the No. 69 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, marks the Bears’ final rookie contract having been finalized for the 2026 season. Roush, a second-team All-ACC member for Stanford in 2025, had the fifth-highest PFN TE Impact Score in the FBS last season at 83.9. His 49 receptions marked the fifth-most among all tight ends, as did his 545 receiving yards. Leading up to the draft, he put together a 9.94 Relative Athletic Score, which was the highest of all tight ends eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft. With Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet in the picture, Roush projects as more of a blocking tight end in 13 personnel packages for the Bears going into his rookie year. However, with his collegiate production, his athletic profile, and his tenacity as an in-line blocker, there’s reason to believe he’ll play a bigger role in Chicago’s offense going forward

One way to judge the health of a league is by looking at its collection of young talent. For the NFL , having a plethora of young players is essential, as they can not only carry the baton from the old guard and become the face of the league, but they also have the ability to lead their respective clubs to a championship. For instance, we're coming off Super Bowl LX, where both teams playing for the Lombardi Trophy -- the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots -- were spearheaded, in part, by youth movements on their rosters. Players from both squads are represented here as we examine the NFL's current crop of young talent and determine which players are the best of the bunch. Below, we're identifying the top 25 players age 25 and under. Before we dive in, let's go over the parameters that helped us construct this list. With that housekeeping out of the way, let's dive in. Note: Players' listed ages are how old they'll be at the start of the 2026 regular season. It was a slow burn to begin Colston Loveland's rookie season, but the Bears tight end came on strong down the stretch. His 58 receptions are the most by a Bears rookie tight end in franchise history, and 47 of those catches came over his final 10 regular-season games. If you project those final 10 games over a full season, Loveland was on pace for roughly 80 catches, 1,015 receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns. He also kept that torrid pace going in the postseason, tallying 12 catches for 193 yards in two games. He's primed to leap into superstardom during his sophomore season in 2026. Joe Alt , the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft , has developed into one of the league's best offensive tackles. While his sophomore campaign was cut short by an ankle injury suffered in November, Alt still earned his first Pro Bowl nod, which shows just how dominant he's become. The Notre Dame product has also shown positional versatility, playing both right and left tackle at an elite level. With Alt in 2025, L.A. went 5-1 and averaged 25.3 points per game. Without him, the Chargers went 6-6 and averaged just 18.3 points. The Colts gave up a haul last season to acquire Sauce Gardner , shipping two first-round picks and receiver Adonai Mitchell to the Jets . Gardner has the talent to be the best player at his position and already has two first-team All-Pro nods on his résumé. That said, there have also been some ebbs during his young career, which is why we're keeping him in the bottom half of this list. If he lives up to the price tag Indy paid this season, he'll reestablish himself as one of the NFL's top young cornerbacks. Cooper DeJean is one of the faces of Philadelphia's blistering secondary, which is one of the league's best units. After winning the Super Bowl as a rookie, DeJean followed it up with a first-team All-Pro campaign in 2025, blossoming into one of the NFL's best slot corners. In the slot, DeJean did not allow a single passing touchdown last season and tallied two interceptions. He also recorded 93 total tackles (second-most on the Eagles ) and four tackles for loss (most among Eagles defensive backs). Despite tearing the organization down to the studs around him, the Dolphins were steadfast in keeping De'Von Achane this offseason, and it's hard to blame them. The Miami back is one of the league's most electrifying players and will now be the centerpiece of the offense in 2026. That comes after a career year in which Achane rushed for a personal-best 1,350 yards, the most by a Dolphins player since Ricky Williams in 2003. His career average of 5.62 yards per carry ranks second in NFL history among running backs with at least 500 rushing attempts. Trent McDuffie barely qualified for this list, as he turns 26 on Sept. 13. That said, he's now the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history after the Rams signed him to a four-year, $124 million extension following his trade from the Chiefs in March. It doesn’t have the fanfare or slow rollout as the NFL’s Top 100 player list, but CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco has been doing his own version of the Top 100 list for years. Three Chicago Bears made the cut this year, and he kicked off his list with Bears tight end Colston Loveland at number 100. He had 58 catches and six touchdowns after starting slowly as a rookie in 2025. He added 12 catches in two playoff games, which shows where he is headed this season. (Last season: NR) Loveland is just one of three tight ends on the list, with San Francisco 49ers ’ George Kittle at number 49 and the Las Vegas Raiders ’ Brock Bowers at 27. Quarterback Caleb Williams was the next Bears player on the list, and he checked in at #70. Williams took a major step forward in his first season working with new coach Ben Johnson . For years, Jim Harbaugh’s preferred brand of football felt almost old-fashioned. While much of the NFL chased lighter personnel groupings, spread formations and smaller, faster defenses, Harbaugh continued to build offenses around physicality, versatility and tight ends. Now, the rest of the league appears to be catching up. One of the more intriguing observations from Albert Breer’s latest offseason notebook centered on the Chargers’ revamped tight end room. Breer suggested Los Angeles ’ overhaul at the position could end up being one of the most important developments of the offseason — and it speaks to something much larger than a player or position group. The Chargers finally are becoming a complete reflection of Harbaugh’s football identity. You can see it throughout the roster. There’s first-round running back Omarion Hampton , a physical downhill runner capable of carrying a heavy workload. There are massive offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater . The defense is built around rugged edge players including Khalil Mack , Tuli Tuipulotu and Akheem Mesidor . And then there are the tight ends. Breer highlighted the additions of Charlie Kolar and David Njoku alongside second-year hybrid weapon Oronde Gadsden II. Kolar arrives from the Ravens as one of the league’s better blocking tight ends and gives the Chargers a true in-line presence. Njoku can align all over the formation, creating matchup problems while allowing offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel greater flexibility in how he deploys personnel. That flexibility has always been central to Harbaugh’s offenses. At Stanford, tight ends were featured weapons. Future NFL players Coby Fleener , Zach Ertz , Levine Toilolo and Jim Dray all flourished under Harbaugh. At Michigan, Jake Butt became a Mackey Award winner, while Colston Loveland developed into one of the nation’s premier tight ends. Harbaugh’s offenses consistently treated the position as more than an extra blocker. Tight ends were foundational pieces capable of influencing the run game and passing attack. What’s changed is that the NFL is beginning to value those players similarly. League-wide usage of 12 personnel — one running back and two tight ends — has climbed from 17.3% of offensive plays in 2022 to more than 22% in 2025. Even more dramatically, 13 personnel packages featuring three tight ends exploded last season, increasing nearly 50% from the previous year. The catalyst may have been right up the 405. Sean McVay’s Rams shocked the league by leaning heavily into 13 personnel during the second half of the 2025 season. The results were devastating. Matthew Stafford threw 22 touchdowns and zero interceptions from those looks, forcing defenses to choose between matching size against the run or risking favorable passing matchups. This created a catch-22 for most teams. The Rams also generated positive expected points added (EPA) on more than 50% of their rushing attempts in 2025, becoming just the second team since Pro Football Focus began tracking the metric in 2006 to reach that mark. The copycat effect was immediate. Twenty-two tight ends were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, the most since 2002. That’s where McDaniel’s arrival becomes particularly fascinating. McDaniel’s offenses in Miami weren’t rigidly built around tight ends, but they were remarkably adaptable. When the personnel justified it, the Dolphins became one of the NFL’s most efficient teams targeting the position, consistently ranking in the top 10 of the league in EPA per play. That marriage between Harbaugh and McDaniel could be exactly what makes the Chargers dangerous. Harbaugh provides the blueprint. McDaniel supplies the creativity. Together, they have assembled a roster capable of playing multiple styles without substituting personnel. They can line up in traditional formations and run power football. They can spread out defenses. They can force opponents into uncomfortable personnel decisions before the ball is

The 2026 season will mark Ryan Poles’ fifth season as general manager of the Chicago Bears . Things are trending in the right direction for his regime, seeing as though the Bears won the NFC North last year and won their first playoff game since the 2010-11 season. It took a little while for things to get rolling, but Poles has the Bears trending in the right direction heading into 2026. It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, as I highlighted when ranking his five worst moves as the team’s general manager. However, in order to get his team into the playoffs and winning double-digit games, you clearly have to have done some things right. After shining light on the bad, let’s do the same with the good. These are Ryan Poles’ five best moves as the general manager of the Bears. Drafting Luther Burden III in Round 2 Drafting Kyle Monangai in Round 7 Surprising everyone by taking Colston Loveland in Round 1 I’ve put three of the Bears’ 2025 draft picks into the honorable mentions list because the players are all so early in their NFL careers. However, their draft haul looks to have strengthened an already strong offensive foundation on their roster, and that’s not even including the encouraging flashes Ozzy Trapilo showed at left tackle before he got hurt. Luther Burden III is an elite YAC threat who was incredibly efficient last year, to the tune of his ranking No. 11 in the NFL in PFN WR Impact Scoring . Colston Loveland ranked No. 6 in their corresponding metric for tight ends , working the seam and stretching the field much better than the average tight end, especially among rookies. Kyle Monangai also proved to be a tough, tenacious runner who served as a stellar complement to D’Andre Swift. All three selections have aged incredibly well thus far and could certainly move up these rankings in due time. This isn’t one specific move as much as it is an overarching theme in Poles’ tenure as the Bears’ general manager. When he took over in the role, his predecessor Ryan Pace left the Bears in the bottom 10 in cap space. With an aging roster that clearly wasn’t going to compete, Poles inherited several bad contracts, releasing several overpaid veterans and trading others who still had trade value. In his first year as general manager, Chicago led the NFL with over $93 million in dead cap . Some of that dead cap carried over to 2023, but in each of the last three offseasons, the Bears have had a tremendous lack of dead cap space compared to what Poles inherited early on. They ranked 26th in dead cap in 2024, 32nd in 2025, and 22nd in 2026. The DJ Moore trade is eating most of that dead cap this year, and there will be no dead cap on him or any other 53-man rosterable player in 2027, as of this writing. That’s a testament to how well Poles and his regime have managed their finances. The Bears traded for Joe Thuney last offseason when he was already 32 years old, so they went into their trade with the Chiefs knowing the move would likely be a short-term one. That said, coming off a 2024 season in which Chicago had significantly struggled to keep Caleb Williams upright in his rookie year, they desperately needed stability along their offensive line. To say that Thuney gave them stability at left guard would be an understatement. He was outright dominant in 2025, earning the inaugural Protector of the Year award in 2025, along with first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition. His presence helped give Williams a much more clean pocket than what he had in Year 1, and Thuney’s consistency in their run to the playoffs made him such a valuable asset. Though the Bears lost the game, his ability to kick outside at left tackle and perform well in their Divisional Round game against the Rams was admirable, too. With fantasy football drafts ramping up and NFL training camps just over a month away, the time has come to narrow down which players could be this year's breakout stars. It seems easy in hindsight, but identifying young talent on the verge of making a major leap is often what propels fantasy managers to championships. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season I've already highlighted my favorite breakout candidates at every key fantasy position. So today, we're finishing the series off by looking at tight ends. 2026 Breakout Candidates : QB | RB | WR | TE 2026 Fantasy Projection Receptions Receiving Yards Receiving TDs Colston Loveland 78 1,015 6 Loveland and Tyler Warren had very strong rookie seasons last year, so if your initial inclination is to dismiss them for being overqualified as breakout candidates in 2026, I understand it completely. However, we haven't even come close to their ceilings yet. Loveland was the TE18 in fantasy points per game during his debut campaign, with 58 receptions, 713 yards and six touchdowns. Over the final nine weeks of the fantasy season, he really began to assert himself by emerging as the fifth-highest scoring tight end during that span. The 22-year-old really flashed his potential down the stretch, becoming a focal point of the Bears' passing attack while posting stat lines of 6-94-1, 10-91-1, 8-137-0 and 4-56-0 over his last four outings, including Chicago's two playoff appearances. He also saw 48 targets combined in those contests, with at least 10 targets in every game. There's a reason why Loveland is being taken as the third tight end off the board in fantasy drafts.
