Every fantasy football manager knows how quickly things can change when it comes to one of the most physical positions in football — running back. Staying prepared and knowing which backs are next in line for touches will always give you an edge on the competition. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season It’s also important to understand which backups have a chance to rise the depth chart based on talent, which ones are poised for a leading role when injuries strike and those who would max out as part of a less appealing replacement committee. Here’s how I’m ranking the top backup running backs based on their fantasy potential in 2026. While I believe it’s only a matter of time before Henderson emerges as the lead back in New England , it seems as though he’ll start the season behind Rhamondre Stevenson once again. The goal with my work is always to project how the next campaign will look and get ahead of how backfields will develop, but Henderson still has work to do in order to prove he deserves the top spot on the depth chart. The fantasy community as a whole believes last year’s second-round pick will be the more valuable ball carrier in New England moving forward. Henderson’s ADP is currently resting at the Round 4-5 turn as the RB21, while Stevenson is going off the board as the RB30 in the seventh round. Though Henderson often took a backseat to the veteran last year, it’s easy to see why the future looks extremely bright for the 23-year-old. Even with Stevenson heavily involved, Henderson ended the season with 911 rushing yards, 221 receiving yards and 10 total TDs. A good chunk of that production came over the final eight weeks when Henderson took advantage of Stevenson being banged up and posted top-10 numbers at the position during that stretch. He flashed more than enough potential to think he’ll grow into a bigger role and become a weekly fantasy difference-maker as early as this season. In the meantime, Stevenson will begin the season offering RB3 fantasy production with Henderson being more of a boom-or-bust weekly RB3 with massive upside when the balance of the backfield shifts. Be prepared for the more explosive Henderson’s touches to ramp up as he gains the coaches’ trust, the same way Jahmyr Gibbs eventually usurped David Montgomery in Detroit . There aren’t many running backs who can brag that they posted over 1,300 scrimmage yards each of the past two seasons, but Dowdle is one of them. He accomplished the feat in 2024 with the Cowboys and again last season with the Panthers, when he overtook an injured Chuba Hubbard and erupted with a pair of 200-yard games before eventually cooling off down the stretch. Now, he joins the Steelers, where he’s reunited with his former head coach Mike McCarthy, who knows him well from their time together in Dallas . That could result in Dowdle capturing a significant role in Pittsburgh ’s offense and perhaps even replacing Jaylen Warren as the lead back at some point. Pittsburgh also has last year’s third-round pick Kaleb Johnson , who doesn’t appear to be slated for much of a role, as well as this year’s seventh-round pick Eli Heindenreich, who is a jack of all trades that might carve out a few offensive touches. For now, Warren and Dowdle seem poised to handle the bulk of the workload in a timeshare that looks like it could be a frustrating one for fantasy, because it has the potential to shift in either direction on a weekly basis. That ambiguity makes Dowdle an interesting fantasy pick though, since we’ve already seen him rise to the top of uncertain backfields in recent years. Even if he remains behind Warren, Dowdle will have a chance to offer fantasy RB3 production while holding serious one-injury-away upside. Corum continues to hold down his spot as one of the top backup RBs for fantasy. New England Patriots rookie running back Jam Miller will be competing for a backup role behind TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson in 2026 after he was selected in the seventh round in April out of the University of Alabama, according to Evan Lazar of Patriots.com. New England doesn't have a clear-cut RB3 on its roster like they did last summer with veteran Antonio Gibson. Lazar suggests it will be a four-man competition between Miller, Terrell Jennings, Lan Larison, and undrafted rookie Myles Montgomery for what will likely be one spot on the 53-man roster. Miller is a compact runner with good straight-line speed, and his experience as a core special-teamer early in his career at Alabama should help his cause. His best path to playing time as a rookie with the Patriots will be if Stevenson misses time due to an injury, so Miller can be avoided in redraft fantasy leagues in 2026. In dynasty/keeper formats, Miller is strictly a stash candidate in his first year if you have either Henderson or Stevenson rostered
Despite missing three games with a toe injury, New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson recorded 948 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns on 162 touches. Despite the emergence of Patriots 2025 second-round running back TreVeyon Henderson, Stevenson remained an integral part of the New England offense and finished the year as the RB22 in per-game PPR scoring. Entering 2026, Stevenson should once again see regular work, particularly in goal-line and short-yardage situations. However, fantasy managers may have good reason to expect regression from the 28-year-old. For one, Stevenson averaged 10.8 yards per reception and 9.3 yards per target in 2026, well above his career averages of 7.0 yards per reception and 5.5 yards per target. Additionally, New England seems likely to give more touches to Henderson, who averaged 5.1 yards per carry and scored 10 touchdowns as a rookie. We will share roundups over the next three weeks, starting with numbers one through nine: Rhamondre Stevenson ranked No. 1 among all running backs in Rushing Yards over Expected per Carry last season at plus-1.4. What does that even mean? It’s a new stat used to determine how many yards a back gains on a given play compared to an average back. Stevenson beat out players like James Cook and Derrick Henry . Some are predicting a breakout season for fellow running back TreVeyon Henderson . But remember, Stevenson didn’t fumble the ball after Week 5 last season. With that part of his game cleaned up, he should be a massive portion of this Josh McDaniels offense again in 2026. Drake Maye finished No. 2 in MVP voting last season, his second in the NFL. As of today, Maye has the sixth-best odds to win MVP in 2026 behind Josh Allen , Lamar Jackson , Patrick Mahomes , Justin Herbert , and Joe Burrow . Now, why might Maye be a decent bet to win the award this coming season? They added a number one receiver in A.J. Brown , and he’s in his second season of Josh McDaniels’ offense. If Maye does defy the odds and win MVP, he’d become just the second Patriot to win the award. You might have heard of the first guy. He has a statue. Christian Gonzalez ranked No. 3 among qualifying defensive backs in Catch Rate Allowed Over Expected at minus-10.2-percent. So, what the heck does that mean? He’s very, very good at not allowing passes you think would be caught to be caught. Only Caleb Bullock and Tre’Davious White beat Gonzalez in this metric, but Gonzalez faced 13 more targets than both of those players combined. Now, we just have to see how his contract situation plays out. TreVeyon Henderson had four rushes of 40+ yards last season. The only player with more was Jahmyr Gibbs with six. Henderson tied De’Von Achane, James Cook, Derrick Henry, and Jonathan Taylor . But here’s where an increased workload for Henderson could pay off in 2026. Those four backs averaged a long run every 74 attempts. Henderson averaged one every 45. As Henderson continues to develop his instincts as a runner as he gets more comfortable in this Patriots offense, you could see even more explosive plays from him in 2026. The Patriots are scheduled to play five primetime games in 2026. That’s the most on their schedule since Cam Newton was quarterback in 2020. That has to be music to the Krafts’ ears. The Patriots raised their profile with the MVP-caliber play of Drake Maye and their run to the Super Bowl. But Cinderella no more, they’ll have a bright red target on their backs this coming season, and everyone will be watching. Marcus Jones has scored six non-offensive touchdowns in three full seasons – he missed all but two games in 2023. It’s the most by any player since Jones entered the NFL as a rookie in 2022. He can be the type of X-factor – thanks to punt returns and pick-sixes – that can help a team scrap together a couple of extra wins. We are in the midst of the NFL offseason, with little going on around the league as a whole and the New England Patriots specifically at the moment. Naturally, this week’s version of our Sunday Patriots Notes is therefore a shortened one. Nonetheless, there are still a few things to talk about. So, let’s dive straight in. The Patriots may not be singing the “draft and develop” tune quite as loudly as they did early during Eliot Wolf’s tenure as quasi-general manager, but they have still brought in a significant number of young players over the last few seasons. Among them are 21 entering their second seasons in the league — players naturally in position to make the famous sophomore jump. Let’s take a closer look at them to find out who should be expected to show some significant improvement heading into 2026. RB TreVeyon Henderson : The Patriots’ second-round pick a year ago, Henderson led the team in every major rushing statistic as a rookie. However, on the year as a whole he still played second fiddle to starter Rhamondre Stevenson . That is not necessarily expected to change too much this fall, but the youngster should still take on a more active role in the rotation. Improved vision and blocking should help him do so and become even more of a big play threat than he already was in 2025. RB Lan Larison : After missing all of last season due to a leg injury, Larison will be competing for the No. 3 running back spot behind Stevenson and Henderson this summer. Based on spring practices, the versatile change-of-pace back can be seen as a frontrunner for that role. FB Brock Lampe : Lampe, like Larison, had to spend all of 2025 on injured reserve. However, his path to a roster spot is blocked by veteran free agency pickup Reggie Gilliam . Pending incident of accident, Gilliam will be the Patriots’ fullback, leaving Lampe to aim for the practice squad. WR Kyle Williams : Williams ran hot and cold during his rookie season but despite some promising plays had a limited overall impact. With the Patriots having revamped their receiving corps through the additions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs , he will face increased competition for playing time. That said, better depth especially at the X-receiver spot might allow the team to use him in a fashion better suited for his skillset. WR Efton Chism III : Chism was a non-factor for much of 2025, but did spend all year on the 53-man roster nonetheless. He will get another prime opportunity to earn a spot on the team, and we believe he will ultimately be successful . Whether that means a more active role on offense or in the return game remains to be seen, but with Mack Hollins , DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte all in a contract year, the Patriots might be playing the long game. WR Jeremiah Webb : Webb spent all of 2025 on the practice squad. Unless the former UDFA can show a massive jump during the summer, and the spring does not suggest that will be the case, this looks like a best-case scenario again for him. TE C.J. Dippre: The Patriots’ tight end depth took a hit when Julian Hill suffered a season-ending knee injury during OTAs, leaving the door wide open for others to earn the TE2 role behind Hunter Henry . Dippre has some talent and will get a chance to prove himself, but it would not be a surprise if the team went in a different direction. OT Will Campbell: Of all the Patriots second-year candidates, Campbell might be under the most pressure. The fourth overall selection in last year’s draft started all 17 of the games he was available for and had some promising stretches of play before a knee injury derailed his season and left him struggling in the playoffs. Now fully healthy and with a year of experience under his belt, he is in a prime position to take a step forward and help solidify the left side of New England ’s offensive line. Stevenson and Henderson are thus on track to continue to share the bulk of New England's rushing load in 2026. In 14 regular-season contests in 2025, Stevenson gained 603 yards and seven TDs on 130 carries, while adding 32 catches for 345 yards and a pair of receiving scores. For his part, Henderson recorded 180 carries for 911 yards and nine TDs to go along with 35 catches for 221 yards and another score in 17 games. Though any sort of backfield time-share can complicate things from a fantasy perspective, both backs should still see enough work to generate fantasy utility while working in an offense helmed by rising young QB Drake Maye. That said, one thing that could tilt things Henderson's way is a re-occurrence of the ball-security issues Stevenson endured during the 2024 campaign, when he racked up a total of seven fumbles (three lost)

Brown and Romeo Doubs to go with Mack Hollins and Kayshon Boutte, they could boast the most physically imposing receiver room in the league. Having spent a first-round pick to shore up the offensive line after making free agent investments at fullback and tight end, this appears to be a unit looking for creative ways to adopt a bully-ball persona. In what should remain one of the league's most efficient and explosive offenses, there's a realistic possibility for both backs to crack 1,000 yards from scrimmage while pushing for double-digit touchdowns, and at RotoBaller's RB28, Stevenson remains a value in the middle rounds of 2026 drafts
New England Patriots running back Jam Miller could be an interesting stash option for dynasty managers. The Patriots selected Miller in the seventh-round of this year's draft. He figures to compete for the No. 3 spot in the backfield with Terrell Jennings, Myles Montgomery, and Lan Larison. This past season, Miller rushed for 504 yards on 130 carries with three touchdowns in 11 games at Alabama. The 3.9 yards per carry isn't ideal, but the Patriots believe Miller has the potential to be a decent contributor. The Patriots often deploy three-man rotations in the backfield, which could give Miller some value right away, assuming he wins the job. At worst, Miller is someone worth stashing on the taxi squad in case an injury happens to Rhamondre Stevenson or TreVeyon Henderson
Tuesday’s opening practice of mandatory minicamp marked the first time all offseason that the New England Patriots’ entire available roster was on the field together. And while all eyes were on returnees Christian Gonzalez and Kayshon Boutte , they were not the main characters once the session actually began. With that said, here are four players who caught our eyes from the Gillette Stadium practice fields. QB Drake Maye : Out of his three practices in front of the media so far this offseason, Tuesday’s was Maye’s best. The third-year quarterback was efficient with the ball and in four competitive team periods completed 19 of 22 pass attempts, with one incompletion being an aborted play due to a blitz. He was decisive and accurate (especially over the middle of the field), spread the ball around well between his targets, and hit Hunter Henry and Rhamondre Stevenson on downfield touchdowns. “We have seen growth in a lot of players, especially some of the younger ones, which I would consider Drake going into his third year,” said head coach Mike Vrabel ahead of the session. “I think that Josh [McDaniels] and Ashton [Grant] have given him some really positive things to work on, some areas of focus, and being able to try to limit mistakes at the line of scrimmage.” WR A.J. Brown : Drake Maye’s newest weapon had a solid day, finishing with a pair of catches from the starting QB, including a touchdown on a high-point fade. More so than his actual performance, Brown’s usage caught our eye. He naturally was actively involved with the starters and upped his workload from his first week as a Patriot, but he also was part of an intriguing three-receiver package at one point that featured him at the Z with Kayshon Boutte as the X and DeMario Douglas in the slot. TE Hunter Henry: Henry has been a go-to target for Drake Maye throughout their two seasons together, and if Tuesday is any indication little is expected to change heading into 2026. The team captain was the starting offense’s busiest receiver, hauling in four catches including a deep touchdown on a corner route. As far as tight ends are concerned, the 31-year-old is unsurprisingly head and shoulders above the rest of the group. LG Alijah Vera-Tucker: The Patriots’ free agency signing continues to be on a rehabilitation timeline working his way back from a season-ending triceps injury. However, Tuesday saw him increase his participation: after not partaking in full-team drills during the two organized team activities open to reporters, he saw some reps at his left guard spot. There is no real judging his performance in a no-contact environment, but he nonetheless appears to be trending in the right direction. LB Robert Spillane : Spillane was the Patriots’ best linebacker in 2025 and a crucial piece of the defensive operation, but he did have some shortcomings in coverage. On Tuesday, those reared their ugly head again: the team captain was beat twice on identical corner routes, first against Hunter Henry and later by Rhamondre Stevenson. Credit where credit is due, the offense executed very well. However, a veteran like Spillane getting beat on the same concept twice within a few reps is also not what you want to see. CB Kindle Vildor: Even though he was present, Christian Gonzalez sat out competitive team drills. This allowed offseason pickup Kindle Vildor to see quality reps as an outside cornerback again, and the 28-year-old generally fared well. While he was beat by A.J. Brown on that touchdown mentioned earlier, he later got the better of the former All-Pro by providing tight coverage against a similar play. Every fantasy football manager knows how quickly things can change when it comes to one of the most physical positions in football — running back. Staying prepared and knowing which backs are next in line for touches will always give you an edge on the competition. It’s also important to understand which backups have a chance to rise the depth chart based on talent, which ones are poised for a leading role when injuries strike and those who would max out as part of a less appealing replacement committee. Here’s how I’m ranking the top backup running backs based on their fantasy potential in 2026. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season Corum continues to hold down his spot as the top backup RB for fantasy. This comes after he took a major step forward in Year 2, earning a larger role behind Kyren Williams and ultimately finishing with 782 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns. His best production came in the second half of the season, when he topped 50 yards in seven of his last 10 outings, including 81 yards and a touchdown in Week 13, 131 yards and two TDs in Week 14, 71 yards and a score in Week 15 and 61 yards and a TD in Week 16. Williams and Corum, who will both turn 26 later this year, seem locked into a timeshare backfield, which makes Williams a fantasy RB2 while Corum is an RB3 with enticing upside in favorable game scripts. Corum also carries more fantasy value thanks to being the No. 2 back in a Sean McVay system that tends to turn any starter into a quality fantasy option. Bottom line, Corum is one injury away from being a top-12 fantasy back. I understand why some people might not like my inclusion of Stevenson on a list of backup running backs, since he technically operated as the Patriots’ starter for most of last season. However, we’re trying to project how the 2026 campaign will look and get ahead of how backfields will develop. The fantasy community as a whole believes last year’s second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson will be the more valuable ball-carrier in New England moving forward. Henderson’s ADP is currently resting at the Round 4-5 turn as the RB20, while Stevenson is going off the board as the RB28 in the seventh round. Though Henderson often took a backseat to the veteran last year, it’s easy to see why the future looks extremely bright for the 23-year-old. Even with Stevenson heavily involved, Henderson ended the season with 911 rushing yards, 221 receiving yards and 10 total TDs. A good chunk of that production came over the final eight weeks when Henderson took advantage of Stevenson being banged up and posted top-10 numbers at the position during that stretch. He flashed more than enough potential to think he’ll grow into a bigger role and become a weekly fantasy difference-maker as early as this season. That doesn’t mean Stevenson won’t have value. The veteran will still be used plenty and is likely going to see more touches than Henderson’s fantasy managers would like in 2026. Though he’s not as sexy of a fantasy selection as some of the other names on this list, Stevenson will have plenty of standalone value as a RB3/flex option. Just don’t be surprised when his touches slowly decline as the more explosive Henderson gains the trust of his coaches, the same way Jahmyr Gibbs eventually usurped David Montgomery in Detroit . There aren’t many running backs who can brag that they posted over 1,300 scrimmage yards each of the past two seasons, but Dowdle is one of them. He accomplished the feat in 2024 with the Cowboys and again last season with the Panthers, when he overtook an injured Chuba Hubbard and erupted with a pair of 200-yard games before eventually cooling off down the stretch. Now, Dowdle joins the Steelers, where he’s reunited with his former head coach Mike McCarthy, who knows him well from their time together in Dallas . Despite being limited to 14 games by a toe injury, New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson recorded 948 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns on 162 touches in 2025. It was a major step forward from an efficiency perspective for Stevenson, who recorded just 21 more scrimmage yards on 78 more touches in 2024. Heading into 2026, Stevenson's workload figures to be limited by the presence of fellow Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson. Stevenson was New England's feature back during its run to the Super Bowl last season, which can't be forgotten. Still, Henderson was a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft who flashed big-play upside as a rookie and could take over more of a true RB1 role in his second season. Even if the workload remains split between the two backs, Stevenson's pathway to consistent fantasy production may require a Henderson injury. In dynasty formats, managers may have one final window to sell high on Stevenson ahead of the 2026 season

Across 17 games, Henderson recorded 1,132 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns on 215 touches. However, Henderson failed to fully seize the Patriots' backfield from veteran running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who finished the year with 948 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns on 162 touches across 14 games. Stevenson also dominated backfield work during the Patriots' postseason run, out-touching Henderson 70 to 35. While Henderson could see his role expand in his second year, concerns about his ability to be a consistent between-the-tackles runner could hold him back from a true RB1 workload. Henderson remains a high-upside dynasty running back, but his week-to-week production could remain inconsistent as long as Stevenson is healthy
The New England Patriots will play hosts to the Pittsburgh Steelers in their 2026 home opener at Gillette Stadium, and to one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Aaron Rodgers will again be under center for the Black and Gold this season, a move that was made official on Saturday. As first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Rodgers and Pittsburgh reached an agreement on a one-year contract. The deal will pay him a fully-guaranteed $22 million. This means that Rodgers will lead the Steelers on their trip to Foxborough in Week 2. The Sept. 20 game will be a rematch of last year’s Sept. 21 meeting between the two clubs. The visitors won that contest with a final score of 21-14, a loss that turned out to be the Patriots’ last one for almost two months. Rodgers completed 16 of 23 pass attempts (69.6%) that day for 139 yards and two touchdowns, while also tossing an interception to Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane . “They throw a lot of different things at you,” Rodgers said following the game. “Felt like they were kind of in a 2-shell to start the game. Ran it at them pretty good the first couple of drives, and they adjusted. Didn’t make enough plays. We had some penalties, some bad throws. They played how we thought they were going to play. They’re a tough group, they’re well coached, and they were sticky in coverage.” The win in Week 3 last year improved Rodgers’ career record against the Patriots to 4-2. He previously went 2-1 while quarterbacking the Packers , and split the series during his lone healthy season with the Jets in 2024. From a Patriots perspective, keeping Rodgers in check was not the main issue last year. Instead, it was the offense turning the ball over five times. Drake Maye threw an interception and lost a fumble, while Rhamondre Stevenson put the ball on the ground twice; Antonio Gibson also fumbled one possession away. The Patriots recovered from that loss and eventually advanced all the way to the Super Bowl.
