The case for Patriots keeping Kayshon Boutte originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston The story of the Patriots’ offseason has clearly been the addition of A.J. Brown . The offshoot of that significant addition to the wide receiver room has been that the odd man out, seemingly by necessity, is Kayshon Boutte . It became an issue — of sorts — when Boutte skipped the voluntary portion of the Patriots’ offseason program before ultimately reporting for mandatory minicamp. “I mean, I wouldn’t mind being here. I do want to be here, obviously,” Boutte said at minicamp in early June. “Whether that’s X, Z, F, just whatever I gotta do that’s best for me. So whether it’s learning the playbook more or moving around, I mean, there’s only one football. There’s five of us, you know? It’s football at the end of the day. You don’t know who it’s going to.” For the most part, Boutte has said the right thing, though “ I wouldn’t mind being here ” might be the slightly more honest version of his sentiment. The reality is, as Boutte enters the final year of his rookie deal after back-to-back productive seasons, he has more on the line personally than most of his teammates in 2026. Finding a way to land on a team with a weak wide receiver depth chart — Las Vegas and Miami come to mind — would be the best way to set some career highs and cash in as a free agent next offseason. And with a depth chart that includes Brown, free agent-signee Romeo Doubs , the reliable Mack Hollins , 2025 third-round pick Kyle Williams , and dueling slot options Efton Chism and DeMario Douglas , the Patriots’ front office and coaching staff is likely somewhat sympathetic to Boutte’s case. Realistically, it’s impossible to envision Boutte getting the 3.75 targets per game that he was given last year before his hamstring injury, which will obviously cut into his production, which will obviously lower his value on the market next year. Boutte, though, declared publicly that the situation is not altogether unique for this season. “It’s been getting crowded every year. We find ourselves at the same position at the beginning of every season, every offseason,” he said. “But I mean, at the end of the day, you still gotta come to training camp and fight. No spot is given, no matter who it is. … Still gotta come out and perform.” Remaining in New England may not be ideal for Boutte, but as long as the 24-year-old remains committed to the program, it would be the best outcome for the Patriots. Here’s why. A.J. Brown is, obviously, a bona fide No. 1. ESPN’s polling of scouts/coaches/executives confirmed that this week when he was listed at No. 9, ahead of heavy hitters like Davante Adams , Mike Evans , Zay Flowers , Drake London , Jameson Williams , Alec Pierce , Tee Higgins , DK Metcalf , Terry McLaurin , Garrett Wilson , DeVonta Smith , Jaylen Waddle , Chris Olave and Brian Thomas Jr. Lest there be any doubt, Brown is a clear-cut No. 1 who can run every route on the tree, even if he may have lost a step on his go routes. Doubs, though, is interesting, as he’s most likely to be utilized running short and intermediate routes, getting open over the middle. In some ways, that will make Hollins’ skills a bit redundant. And though we’ve been conditioned in New England over the past 25 years to believe that a shifty, undersized slot receiver is a requirement for all NFL offenses, Boutte presents an explosive-play potential that neither Douglas nor Chism could provide. Of all the reasons for the Patriots to trade away Boutte, his blocking of Kyle Williams on the depth chart might be the least valid. Would the Patriots love it if Williams were able to shake off a truly miserable rookie season and become a contributing member of the offense? Of course. Does Williams flash some tantalizing physical tools that can make you think he just needs a few more opportunities to put it all together? Sure. No doubt. 3-Point Stance: Don’t count on a Stefon Diggs return to Patriots
It’s been exactly four months since the New England Patriots released their 2025 receiving leader, Stefon Diggs, and the veteran remains unsigned as training camp approaches for most franchises in two weeks. Even though Diggs’ previously pending assault case was resolved in his favor in early May, no deal has materialized for the 32-year-old yet. Calls for a reunion have surfaced among Patriots fans on social media over the last two months, after a season with New England where Diggs became the team’s first 1,000-yard receiver since Julian Edelman in 2019 and helped lead a revitalized offense to a Super Bowl appearance. But New England doesn’t appear to be actively entertaining that idea. Head coach Mike Vrabel was asked during mandatory minicamp if the team had considered bringing Diggs back. His response indicated that the coaching staff is comfortable with the current makeup of the wide receiver corps. “I think we’re probably at the number that we would need right now,” Vrabel said on June 10 . “I wouldn’t say anything is off the table. We’d want to add anybody that can help us. I’m not going to give a percentage on it, but I think we’re happy with where we’re at right now, with the numbers and the people in the receiver room.” Following the championship loss to the Seattle Seahawks — where the Patriots receivers only totaled 60 yards at the commencement of the third quarter — team brass decided to upgrade at the position this offseason. New England began by signing Romeo Doubs to a multi-year deal in free agency after releasing Diggs. It was also willing to depart from a 2028 first-round pick to acquire A.J. Brown , illustrating its commitment to rebuilding the position’s production through a different approach compared to 2025. Behind the duo atop the depth chart, Brown and Doubs, the Patriots still boast plenty of pieces that make up a very deep receiver room, including Mack Hollins , quarterback Drake Maye ’s favorite deep threat Kayshon Boutte , DeMario Douglas and 2025 third-round draft selection Kyle Williams . All four pass-catchers played a role in helping Maye propel the team to the Super Bowl after a previous 4-13 season. Among that group, Douglas looks poised to reclaim the primary slot role in 2026 after an impressive spring, during which he was a main contributor on offense. “I think second year in the system, you even see more confidence,” wide receivers coach Todd Downing said during minicamp of Douglas’ growth . “Just a little pep in his step being around us and being comfortable with us, being who he is and letting his personality be out there and energetic. And that’s something that is awesome to have as a coach. “But secondly, I would say he’s really doing a good job with decision-making routes. So, if there’s a decision to be made, whether it’s a choice route or a post or a cross, he’s making decisions quickly and correctly. And that’s a really valuable piece of this offense.” As the top receiver last season, Diggs amassed 102 targets. Returning to a crowded room would limit the veteran’s role compared to 2025, with the team turning its attention toward younger talent. Additionally, Diggs is coming off a resurgent season after an ACL tear, in which he proved he’s still a substantially impactful receiver, meaning he could command similar or higher pay than he earned in 2025. The former All-Pro earned roughly $19.8 million last season from his heavily incentivized three-year, $63.5 million contract. The Patriots have already invested significant resources into their wide receiver grouping, currently allocating just under $35.6 million to the position, per Spotrac , which accounts for just over 10% of the team’s cap spending. They also parted ways with a future first-round pick. Re-signing Diggs would add to that total while New England is currently battling uncertainty on the defensive edge and at tight end. What offensive and defensive positional groups is going to be the most fun to watch battle it out in camp? – mathblaster97 The talent and depth at wide receiver and defensive line will make those groups exciting to watch for me. A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs building their chemistry with Drake Maye while Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams , Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas , and Efton Chism III battle for their roles — as well as their potential futures in New England . Then Milton Williams and Christian Barmore start year two together while Cory Durden , Leonard Taylor III , Joshua Farmer , Eric Gregory, Jeremiah Pharms, David Blay and Travis Shaw will be competing for depth roles. Is there any other precedent for a player doing a freelance surgery without the teams knowledge? Did it all come out copacetic for the player, contract and team at the end? – paulnewman Under the league’s CBA, players have the right to seek second medical opinions and select surgeons outside of the organization at the team’s expense. The team must be aware of any procedure beforehand, however, and then has final authority on when the player is cleared to play. There have been several examples over the years of players and teams differing on medical opinions. Most notably in recent years, offensive tackle Trent Williams sought outside medical care after Washington team doctors reportedly labeled a growth on his head harmless. An outside specialist later found it to be a form of tissue cancer that required several surgeries to remove the tumor. The situation ultimately contributed to Williams forcing a trade. As Williams’ case illustrates, relationships can often become strained during these disputes. The Jets fined and released Kelechi Osemele in 2019 after he authorized an outside surgeon to perform shoulder surgery that team doctors believed he could play through. The Saints and Michael Thomas publicly disagreed over treatment options after Thomas received a second opinion on his ankle injury and opted against immediate surgery. The situation involving Gabe Jacas and the Patriots is somewhat different. Because Jacas had not yet been drafted when he underwent his cleanup procedure, neither he nor his representatives were obligated to follow CBA procedures and notify NFL teams. As a result, the Patriots did not provide him with the standard participation agreement during the spring, and Jacas remains unsigned as the two sides continue to work through issues related to guarantees and injury protection. At this point, however, any frustration from the Patriots side is likely with the agent due to those factors. What would you say to Paul Perillo, who said on PU, that the Pats have Jacas’ rights secured without a contract until next year’s draft and not the game 10 marker that was stated before? – PatsHowYouDoIt To clarify, the Tuesday following Week 10 is the deadline after which a rookie becomes ineligible to play during that season. However, the team still retains that player’s rights until the following NFL Draft, at which point the player would be eligible to re-enter the draft and be selected by another team. Teams also lose the ability to trade the rights to an unsigned drafted rookie 13 days before the first game of the regular season. What’s your opinion of flexing Mack Hollins as a TE over WR??? Can Drake Maye Take Another Step in 2026?
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was one first-place vote away from winning the 2025 NFL MVP award in his first full season as a starter, and one area that his supporters pointed to was the level of pass catchers he was throwing to in comparison to the award's winner, Matthew Stafford. Heading into 2026, the Patriots have rebuilt their wide receiver corps, adding Romeo Doubs through free agency and sending a first and fifth-round pick to Philadelphia for three-time Pro Bowler A.J. Brown. Maye finished as the fantasy QB2 in 2025, accounting for 4,844 yards and 35 touchdowns through the air and on the ground, and as he continues to take agency over Josh McDaniels' offense, his game has the potential to reach even higher levels. He was one of the most proficient passers against man coverage last season, while Brown has been the league's most disruptive receiver against man since 2022, and with Brown and Doubs expected to hold the top two spots on the depth chart, the rest of New England's receivers like Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, DeMario Douglas, and, for now, Kayshon Boutte can slot into their more natural positions. Having spent a first-round pick to shore up the offensive line after making free agent investments at fullback and tight end, this appears to be a unit looking for creative ways to adopt a bully-ball persona. Patriots end practice early after scary Drake Maye collision
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel watched his entire season flash before his eyes after a tumultuous offseason. During 11-on-11 drills Thursday, its final practice of the week, New England apparently turned up the heat but was forced to end early as Drake Maye collided with second-year Edge rusher Bradyn Swinson . It took Maye a bit to get off the grass, and they ended practice nearly 25 minutes early, according to multiple reports. Longtime Patriots reporter Tom Curran described Swinson as “over exuberant” during a competitive red-zone series of drills. “It was one of those over-exuberant pass rushes by Braden Swinson, the second-year player off the edge. There was a completion to AJ Brown ,” Curran began telling the story of what happened on WEEI New England radio. “I would say about 25 minutes left in the workout. AJ Brown took it in for a touchdown, but Braden Swinson made a little bit of contact with Drake Maye, and the two of them landed in a heap. “Mike Vrabel said, ‘Alright, everybody out of the pool.'” Practice had been scheduled to end around 2:53 p.m. ET, but was called around 2:30 p.m. ET instead by Vrabel. The Patriots did have Maye throw to a few of his new receivers after the incident to make sure he was ok. “[After the incident with Swinson] Everybody settled up and that was the end of it,” Curran said. “But Drake Maye, just to put a fine point on it, he did throw after practice to Mack Hollins , Romeo Doubs and a few other guys. There were no traces of any disabilities or anything.” It appears that Maye is OK after taking the hit, but the WEEI radio hosts were distraught at the idea of their franchise quarterback suffering blows like that. “To be quite honest, [the report of that Maye hit] kind of scared the snot out of us,” Rich Shertenlieb said to Curran. New England has had a tumultuous offseason, as Vrabel was embroiled in a highly controversial relationship with former The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini after being caught at an exclusive resort in Sedona, Ariz., despite being married with children to Jen Vrabel . The situation created a firestorm for the team, and Vrabel missed Day 3 of the NFL Draft for therapy after new photos emerged of the coach and Russini together at a Manhattan bar. New England did improve its team, though, this offseason as it acquired Brown from the Eaglesl to further improve its pass-catching unit, along with signing Doubs

Confident DeMario Douglas ready to take next step in Patriots offense
New England Patriots wide receiver DeMario Douglas has been a primary contributor for the team on offense through voluntary practices and mandatory minicamp thus far. His increased comfort in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ offense has been a key reason why. Entering his fourth year in the NFL and in New England , Douglas has caught the eye of Patriots wide receivers coach Todd Downing this spring. “I think second year in the system, you even see more confidence,” Downing said before practice on Wednesday. “Just a little pep in his step being around us and being comfortable with us, being who he is and letting his personality be out there and energetic. And that’s something that is awesome to have as a coach. “But secondly, I would say he’s really doing a good job with decision-making routes. So, if there’s a decision to be made, whether it’s a choice route or a post or a cross, he’s making decisions quickly and correctly. And that’s a really valuable piece of this offense.” Douglas took time to speak with the media following practice and added that McDaniels has told him to be more “savvy” as a route runner heading into 2026. “He said more savvy,” Douglas said of McDaniels’ main request. “Just go out there and don’t run what I see on a piece of paper, the line on the piece of paper. Go out there and add my swagger to it. He believes in me, and I appreciate him for that.” The former sixth-round draft selection in 2023 has 1,629 yards and six touchdowns through his first three years of play, leading the team in receiving yards during his rookie season; however, Douglas’ production dipped by over 30 receptions in his first year under McDaniels, as veterans like Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins were added, and Kayshon Boutte improved. Douglas admits McDaniels’ offense was difficult to learn at the time, but he is starting to feel more confident. “The first year I learned that offense, it is kind of tricky,” Douglas said looking back to last season. “Year one is like, you have to learn [the system] and gain confidence. Year two is like, ‘Oh, I have my confidence, now let me go out there and play.’ Let me go out there and play fast.” Maye has heavily targeted the 25-year-old in the early stages of this offseason and in the further implementation of McDaniels’ offense, which has been evident on the practice field. “Since I got here as a rookie, he always does the right thing,” Maye said of Douglas. “He makes the right plays, makes the catches; he’s hard to cover. Like I said, you can’t guard him in a phone booth, and he’s so good at breaking off the main coverage. He’s a mismatch. He’s so hard to stay in front of. [I’m] looking forward to seeing his role grow bigger.” New England has made significant changes to the wide receiver room since 2025, trading for Super Bowl champion A.J. Brown , signing former Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs to a multi-year contract and releasing Stefon Diggs . While Brown and Doubs can play in the slot, that’s not where the pair of receivers thrive on offense. Diggs, however, played roughly half of his snaps last season lined up in the slot. Douglas, at 5-foot-8, 185 pounds, and considering his elite ability as an explosive route runner with exceptional short-area quickness, now has an opportunity to play an expanded role in 2026

Picking one under-the-radar breakout star candidate for each AFC team entering 2026
While this is a relatively quiet period on the NFL calendar, it's an important moment for franchises as these offseason workouts become the foundation for what they hope will be a productive regular season. It's also the first glimpse of breakout candidates and veterans looking to remind fans of their star power. With that in mind, we highlight one player from each AFC team who could blossom into a key figure for their team. That could range from a rookie, second-year player to even a long-in-the-tooth veteran. Don't sleep on these guys. New England's wide receiver room saw plenty of offseason movement. The Patriots released Stefon Diggs and signed Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract. Then, on June 1, they pulled off the long-awaited blockbuster with the Eagles for A.J. Brown , inserting him as the true No. 1 wideout in the offense. While Brown and Doubs will garner most of the attention, don't sleep on Kyle Williams . The 2025 third-round pick had a relatively quiet rookie season, catching just 10 balls for 209 yards and three touchdowns. He was largely used as a deep threat, but there's certainly more for him to grow, even with the additions New England has made. It wouldn't be surprising to see Williams push veteran Mack Hollins for snaps and targets opposite Brown. Buffalo traded out of the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft , which took some of the buzz away from what they accomplished over the course of the draft. However, their first pick, second-round edge rusher T.J. Parker , shouldn't be overlooked. Buffalo was in the bottom half of the league in total sacks in 2025, so there is a serious need to insert players who have a knack for getting after the quarterback. Sure, veteran Bradley Chubb , who signed a three-year, $52 million contract this offseason, will be the main figure tasked with adding pressure off the edge, but Parker should factor in as well. After all, Parker did have an 11-sack season at Clemson in 2024, which included 19.5 tackles for a loss and six forced fumbles. The talent is there, and if Parker taps into it early in his tenure with Buffalo, it could prove massive for the Bills ' hopes of reaching the Super Bowl. As part of their roster overhaul, Miami gutted its wide receiver room, releasing Tyreek Hill and trading Jaylen Waddle to Denver. Washington represents a notable holdover and should see a sizable uptick in targets as the Dolphins usher in Malik Willis as their new starting quarterback. Washington was third on the team in targets (65) and receptions (46), and fourth in receiving yards (317) last season. He'll now compete with veterans Jalen Tolbert and Tutu Atwell , who Miami brought in this offseason, along with rookies Chris Bell and Caleb Douglas . It's conceivable that Washington becomes the No. 1 target in this receiver room and puts up career numbers across the board. The Jets reshaped their offense and added two receiving threats in the first round, including Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq . That took some air out of the balloon of the Mason Taylor hype train leading into 2026, but the 2025 second-round pick should still be considered a main figure in this offense. With Garrett Wilson dealing with injuries throughout 2025, Taylor became one of New York's most consistent pass-catching options. He was second on the team in receiving yards (369) and first in receptions (44). Breakout Patriots receiver Kayshon Boutte open to trade after team landed A.J. Brown
One new Patriots receiver may push another out the door. New England landed A.J. Brown earlier this week in a long-awaited trade, but a breakout pass catcher on the Patriots is reportedly open to be traded amid the team’s latest acquisition. Kayshon Boutte , who caught a career-high six touchdowns last year, has been “interested” in a trade, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on his podcast after the Brown move. Schefter added that he expects Boutte — who has not been at the team’s offseason program thus far — to be moved this summer. Boutte, a sixth-round pick in 2023, has become a valuable part of the Patriots’ offense over the last two seasons. In that span, the 24-year-old racked up 1,140 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 29 games (23 starts). However, following their Super Bowl loss to the Seahawks. the Patriots chose to bolster their receiver room as they also signed former Packer Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million deal. And this week, they officially landed Brown, sending a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder to Philly. Mack Hollins and DeMario Douglas also figure to steal some targets after productive seasons last year. Boutte developed some nice chemistry with quarterback Drake Maye last season, as he provided a deep threat for the young quarterback. What could Las Vegas Raiders offer New England Patriots in trade for Kayshon Boutte?
The NFL trade that everyone knew was coming finally happened with the June 1 deadline passing on Monday, as the Philadelphia Eagles sent disgruntled wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots in exchange for draft picks. Why does that matter for the Las Vegas Raiders? Well, one of the biggest weaknesses on the Raiders’ roster right now is at wide receiver, and the Patriots now have an abundance of wideouts. In addition to trading for Brown, New England signed former Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract during free agency. That’s on top of having Mack Hollins (2025 free-agent addition), Kayshon Boutte (2023 sixth-round pick), Kyle Williams (2025 third-round pick) and DeMario Douglas (2023 sixth-round pick) already on the roster. Boutte is the biggest name to keep tabs on when it comes to any trade rumors. He’s had decent production with 76 catches for 1,140 yards and nine touchdowns over the last two seasons combined, but he’s entering the final season of his rookie contract and likely won’t have a big role in New England now that Brown is in town. On top of that, the Patriots would take on less than $50k of dead cap space and save nearly $3.7 million in trading Boutte, per Over The Cap , and would likely jump at the opportunity to get something back for him. Meanwhile, as mentioned above, the Raiders have a big need at wide receiver, and the wideout would fit in with the organization’s youth movement after turning just 25 years old at the beginning of May. Also, the idea of having him on a one-year, tryout-type contract to see how Boutte and Fernando Mendoza work together could be enticing for John Spytek and Klint Kubiak. If the duo has immediate chemistry, then an extension can always get worked out before the offseason hits. Now, the question is: what can Las Vegas send in a trade that would pique New England’s interests? To clarify, the sections below aren’t trade packages but rather an outline of what the Raiders can offer, and any combination of the assets listed could be packaged together. Draft capital is going to be a talking or negotiating point with just about every trade in the NFL, and the Patriots are likely looking to recoup some picks after the Brown deal. Granted, they do still have nine selections in the 2027 draft, but five are in rounds five and six, and the higher of their two fifth-round picks will be going to Philly. Also, the Pats sent their 2028 first-rounder to the Eagles to help further justify loading up on future selections. As for the Raiders, they only have their own picks in the first six rounds of the draft, trading away their 2027 seventh-rounder to get cornerback Jermod McCoy last April. So, it’s not as if Las Vegas is flush with draft capital, but the organization does have three Day 3 selections at its disposal to bring Boutte aboard. Additionally, the Silver and Black have all seven of their 2028 picks, if needed. While New England’s defense returns its 2025 sack-leader, Harold Landry ( 8.5 sacks ), the unit lost its second-best edge-rusher, K’Lavon Chaisson (7.5 sacks), to the Washington Commanders this offseason. Granted, the Patriots signed Dre’Mont Jones in free agency and used a second-round pick on Gabe Jacas , but those two shouldn’t prevent an expected Super Bowl contender from ensuring one of its biggest offseason needs is met. Especially since it would only take moving on from a player who likely doesn’t have a long-term fit anymore. Meanwhile, Spytek agreed to a second one-year, “prove-it” contract with Koonce before the Maxx Crosby-Baltimore Ravens trade fell through. Considering Spytek also brought in Kwity Paye in free agency, it’s hard to imagine he would have made the same offer to Koonce’s camp had he known Crosby would still be on the roster. Plus, after drafting Keyron Crawford, edge is arguably the deepest position on the Raiders’ roster. Meredith’s inclusion in a trade for Boutte would likely be to sweeten the d [... truncated ...]

At this point, it seems like Diggs could sign with someone soon, or he could wait for injuries and opportunities to arise that may not be available now. While the Los Angeles Chargers have struggled delivering championship performances on the field, their social media team delivers year in and year out when it comes to its schedule release videos. The latest features a Halo theme, and it also includes a section about the New England Patriots and their head coach, Mike Vrabel. The Patriots’ section is a race titled “Conquer the Cupcakes,” seemingly a nod to the club’s easy schedule in 2025. It later goes on to poke fun at Vrabel for the ongoing off-field story involving himself and NFL reporter Dianna Russini. First, there is a “Next photo dump 1 mile” sign visible. Later, a notification titled “NY Post sent you a message” pops up on screen. The short segment ends with the Patriots crashing in the Super Bowl, and three players titled Drake “ Drake Maye ” Maye, BigWillie66 and FreeTheFeet13 getting eliminated. Two more players — okurrr_cardi and DaddyDiggs6 — “left the game.” The screen names are references to Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, left tackle Will Campbell and wide receiver Mack Hollins as well as singer Cardi B and her ex-boyfriend and former Patriots wideout Stefon Diggs .
