Patriots rally in second half for 24-19 win in Miami
The Patriots have had some rough trips to Miami in the past and it looked like this might be another one through the first 30 minutes of play, but things took a positive turn after halftime. The Dolphins led 13-3 at the break, but the Patriots scored the first 21 points of the second half to build a two-score lead of their own. The Dolphins cut into that just before the two minute warning on a 35-yard Kevin Coleman touchdown catch, but they missed the extra point and the Patriots were able to run out the clock on a 24-19 win after recovering the onside kick. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson picked up the final yards and he had 18 carries for 77 yards overall, but quarterback Drake Maye was in the center of the action for the Patriots’ comeback. After going 7-of-10 for 53 yards while being sacked twice in the first half, Maye completed eight straight passes to open the second half. Those passes picked up 144 yards and two of them went for touchdowns that covered more than 40 yards. The first was to Kyle Williams and the other was a short throw to Pop Douglas that Douglas turned into a 48-yard score in the fourth quarter. Douglas’s touchdown came a couple of plays after safety Kevin Byard’s first interception as a Patriot. Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis’s throw went off of Patriots defensive lineman DaQuan Jones’s helmet and spun into the air before coming down to Byard for Miami’s first turnover of the game. Maye also ran for a two-yard score and it makes two weeks in a row that Maye has produced points with his arm and his legs. It’s also five straight games with multiple touchdown passes for Maye, which is made all the more impressive given how little of that success has come with wide receiver A.J. Brown playing a meaningful role on the New England offense. Brown missed Sunday’s game with a knee injury and the 5-3 Patriots will wait to see if he’s able to return for next Sunday’s game against the Packers. Willis was 21-of-32 for 211 yards and two touchdowns, which makes it two straight strong performances for the first-year starter in Miami. Running back Ollie Gordon added 19 carries for 69 yards, but had a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after one of his runs and the Dolphins don’t have the kind of margin for error that allows them to overcome mistakes on a regular basis. They’ll stay at home for a visit from the Lions in Week 9 and the 1-5 club will need to be sharper if they want to pull off an upset in that matchup

Drake Maye puts Patriots up 17-13 at end-of-third-quarter
The Patriots were down 10 at halftime in Miami, but they’re back on top before the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Drake Maye used a fake pitch to running back Rhamondre Stevenson to fool Dolphins linebacker Willie Gay and kept the ball for a two-yard touchdown. The extra point put the Patriots up 17-13 with 59 seconds to play in the third quarter. Maye was able to get into the end zone thanks to a second fortuitous replay review of the quarter. A pass to wide receiver Pop Douglas on fourth down was ruled short of the first down by officials, but replay showed Douglas had reached the line and the Patriots were able to continue their drive. Maye’s touchdown pass on the previous Patriots possession was initially and incomprehensibly ruled incomplete by referee Alex Moore’s crew, which necessitated a successful challenge by Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Moore and company were supposed to work Sunday night’s game this week, but were pulled from that assignment after a rough day in last Sunday’s Lions-Packers game

Maye completed 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 24-19 win over the Dolphins. He added five rushing yards and a TD on eight carries. While he failed to reach 200 passing yards for the third time in eight games this season, Maye put together a very efficient performance as he produced multiple TDs for a fifth straight game. All three scores came in the second half as the QB rallied the Patriots from a 13-3 deficit, hitting Kyle Williams for a 43-yard score in the third quarter and DeMario Douglas for a 48-yard strike in the fourth, while running for a two-yard TD in between. Revisiting Panthers' blockbuster trade with Bears to draft Bryce Young: Chicago, Caleb Williams won big
This week, the No. 1 overall picks from the 2023 and 2024 NFL Drafts will be under the bright lights of primetime. Bryce Young and the Panthers open Week 8 with a crucial "Thursday Night Football" game against the Packers , and Caleb Williams and the Bears close out the week with a "Monday Night Football" showdown against the Seahawks . Both quarterbacks will face tough road tests against conference foes with postseason ambitions. And both quarterbacks are forever intertwined. Though Young is forever tied to 2023 No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud , and Williams is forever tied to the loaded 2024 class that included Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye , Young and Williams are a byproduct of one another. In March 2023, the Panthers moved heaven and earth to jump from the No. 9 pick to the No. 1 pick, an all-time blockbuster that shaped not only the two franchises but the league as a whole. With Young hoping to get Carolina back on track Thursday, we look back on the trade. The Panthers were one of several teams exploring a trade up for a quarterback, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported at the time . Carolina won out with a huge package. At the time, the Bears were committed to Justin Fields as their starting quarterback, even though they would have had plenty of options in the draft had they chosen that direction: Young, Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis were considered among the top prospects. But Fields, the No. 11 pick in 2021, had only been in the league two years. The results had been poor, but so, too, were the surroundings. Fields' top receiver in 2022 was Darnell Mooney , who failed to crack 500 receiving yards. Fields, who nearly broke the quarterback rushing record in 2022, would get one more year, and bringing Moore into the equation was crucial for Chicago. He was coming off a down 2022 season but had cracked 1,100 receiving yards each of the three years prior. The Panthers had been a mess ever since David Tepper bought them back in 2018. Tepper fired Ron Rivera midseason in 2019 and hired Matt Rhule in 2020, only to fire Rhule early in the 2022 season. In between, he fired GM Marty Hurney in 2020 and hired Scott Fitterer to fill that role, creating no coach-GM alignment. The Panthers went 29-53 across Tepper's first five years of ownership. They also cycled through quarterbacks after Cam Newton's decline and eventual departure. From 2018-22, Carolina had a different leading passer every season: Newton in 2018, Kyle Allen in 2019, Teddy Bridgewater in 2020, Sam Darnold in 2021 and Baker Mayfield in 2022. When Carolina moved up to No. 1 in 2023, it didn't know who it would take, but it thought the move "gave it the most options," according to Schefter. "Should the Panthers fall in love with a couple of quarterbacks, they would consider trading back a spot or two, according to a league source," a story by ESPN's Courtney Cronin and David Newton read . The Panthers ultimately landed on Young, though later reports said that coach Frank Reich, hired months earlier, preferred Stroud. While Tepper adamantly defended that the entire group was aligned on Young , he also curiously said that wasn't always the expectation. "Originally, we thought we were going to the No. 2 pick, and we thought we'd get C.J.," Tepper said . "We thought the Texans were going to take Bryce. And listen, we preferred Bryce. He was our No. 1 choice. We had a lot of conviction." That mess paled in comparison to the mess playing out on the field in Young's rookie year. Young struggled mightily, and an underwhelming offensive line and receiving corps didn't help. Young took 62 sacks, and his 4.6 net yards per attempt was — and still is — the worst since 2010 Jimmy Clausen . A collection of highly knowledgeable offensive minds — Reich, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and offensive line coach James Campen — never melded.
