Patriots rally in second half for 24-19 win in Miami
The Patriots have had some rough trips to Miami in the past and it looked like this might be another one through the first 30 minutes of play, but things took a positive turn after halftime. The Dolphins led 13-3 at the break, but the Patriots scored the first 21 points of the second half to build a two-score lead of their own. The Dolphins cut into that just before the two minute warning on a 35-yard Kevin Coleman touchdown catch, but they missed the extra point and the Patriots were able to run out the clock on a 24-19 win after recovering the onside kick. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson picked up the final yards and he had 18 carries for 77 yards overall, but quarterback Drake Maye was in the center of the action for the Patriots’ comeback. After going 7-of-10 for 53 yards while being sacked twice in the first half, Maye completed eight straight passes to open the second half. Those passes picked up 144 yards and two of them went for touchdowns that covered more than 40 yards. The first was to Kyle Williams and the other was a short throw to Pop Douglas that Douglas turned into a 48-yard score in the fourth quarter. Douglas’s touchdown came a couple of plays after safety Kevin Byard’s first interception as a Patriot. Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis’s throw went off of Patriots defensive lineman DaQuan Jones’s helmet and spun into the air before coming down to Byard for Miami’s first turnover of the game. Maye also ran for a two-yard score and it makes two weeks in a row that Maye has produced points with his arm and his legs. It’s also five straight games with multiple touchdown passes for Maye, which is made all the more impressive given how little of that success has come with wide receiver A.J. Brown playing a meaningful role on the New England offense. Brown missed Sunday’s game with a knee injury and the 5-3 Patriots will wait to see if he’s able to return for next Sunday’s game against the Packers. Willis was 21-of-32 for 211 yards and two touchdowns, which makes it two straight strong performances for the first-year starter in Miami. Running back Ollie Gordon added 19 carries for 69 yards, but had a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after one of his runs and the Dolphins don’t have the kind of margin for error that allows them to overcome mistakes on a regular basis. They’ll stay at home for a visit from the Lions in Week 9 and the 1-5 club will need to be sharper if they want to pull off an upset in that matchup

The Dolphins won their first game of the season on Sunday, but quarterback Malik Willis said it’s important to put that win in perspective. “We’re 1-5, so it’s not like we won the Super Bowl,” Willis said. “We’ve got to continue to get better, continue to work. We want to stack more of those, and to do that we’ve got to continue to get better from what we put on tape this past week and the weeks before that. That’s what’s important, keeping the focus on let’s try to go 1-0 this week. That’s what it’s about now.” Willis said the Dolphins try every week to get better, and the week after beating the Jets has been no different. “Just continue to focus, 24 hours after the game, you’ve got to focus on the next week,” Willis said. “We’ve got another game coming this week, and if we’re stuck worrying about that, we won’t get any better. We lost five games in a row and we continued to get better, so after we win a game we have to try to get better.” Asked about a team celebration, Willis said they celebrated together immediately after winning the game, and then it’s back to work. “We did a good job celebrating as a team in the locker room after the game,” Willis said. “That’s when you have the most excitement, the most joy from putting it out there, putting it on the line for 60 minutes. All the guys celebrated and we had a good time.”

Mike Vrabel: Proud of Malik Willis for continuing to develop
Mike Vrabel was Malik Willis’ head coach for the first two years of the quarterback’s career. A Titans third-round pick in 2022, Willis appeared in eight games with three starts under Vrabel as a rookie and then another three games in 2023. The two will be on opposite sidelines on Sunday, as the Dolphins face the Patriots in South Florida. Vrabel told reporters on Monday that working with Willis in Nashville was great. “Malik’s continued to develop, and that’s the thing that I’m proud of him for, and I know that he should be proud of himself to continue to battle and go to Green Bay,” Vrabel said, via transcript from the team. “I try to stay in communication with him, tell him congrats and that I’m happy for him, and then he gets a deal in Miami. “He’s very talented. Aaron Glenn defends not using timeouts after saying he should have on Sunday
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said after Sunday’s 28-25 loss to the Dolphins that he should have used the team’s timeouts at the end of the first half rather than letting the Dolphins drain the clock before scoring a touchdown to go up 14 points with six seconds left on the clock. The Dolphins picked up a first down at the Jets’ 25-yard-line on the first play after the two-minute warning and then picked up 20 yards on their next two plays. They took their own timeout with 20 seconds left, drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone and used a second timeout after losing yards on a run before scoring on a Malik Willis run. On Monday, Glenn defended the team’s approach despite his Sunday admission that he should have stopped the clock. “They have time to get more first downs to negate the timeouts that we have, so we call timeout then we’re using those ,” Glenn said. “They get another first down, then they can run the clock out.” The Jets had more to gain from getting the ball back with time to mount a drive than they had to lose by using their timeouts in that situation and the mismanagement highlights a consistent problem of Glenn’s tenure with the team. The Jets have now been outscored 107-6 in the last two minutes of the first halves since Glenn was hired and the head coach said Monday that they are “trying” to improve in those situations. Based on Sunday, one approach might be to do the opposite of whatever first comes to mind on the sideline

The Dolphins have Jeff Hafley is in position for his first win as an NFL head coach. Malik Willis’s two-yard touchdown run with six seconds left in the first half has Miami up 21-7 on the Jets at halftime at MetLife Stadium. Willis also threw a touchdown during the best half of play that the Dolphins have turned in this season. Willis is 10-of-13 for 128 yards and he’s run five times for 37 yards, including a five-yard scramble on fourth down that helped set up his touchdown run. Running back Ollie Gordon has 14 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown while tight end Greg Dulcich has five catches for 86 yards. Gordon’s touchdown at the end of the first drive of the game gave the Dolphins their first lead of the season, but it only lasted a couple of minutes before Geno Smith hit tight end Mason Taylor for a game-tying touchdown. The Dolphins moved back in front on Willis’s touchdown pass and the Jets were driving again when Smith threw a pass right to Dolphins rookie safety Michael Taaffe. Taaffe read the play perfectly and jumped the route to create a turnover in the red zone and the Jets never threatened to score more points before the break. They will get the ball to start the third quarter, but their defense will need to improve by leaps and bounds to pull off a comeback
