Actually, it's less than a month away because the opening game of the season will be coming on Sept. 9 when the Seahawks face the Patriots in the Wednesday night opener. The first game of the season is usually played on a Thursday night but the NFL threw a wrench into that tradition this year. There will still be a game on Thursday in Week 1, but it will be the one in Australia ( Rams vs. 49ers ), which will actually be played on a Friday due to the time difference. Basically, you have one month to prepare for the start of the season, but you have zero time to prepare for the start of today's newsletter because we're diving into it now. The Pro Football Hall of Fame officially has five new members following an enshrinement ceremony over the weekend that saw Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald , Roger Craig, Luke Kuechly and Adam Vinatieri all get inducted. Kuechly became the second-youngest player to ever be inducted while Vinatieri became just the third kicker ever to get a bust in Canton. There were plenty of memorable and emotional moments during the ceremony. With this year's class officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, now seems like a good time to go ahead and take a look at who might be in the class of 2027. CBSSports.com's Bryan DeArdo decided to make a prediction on who's going to get in next year and he sees six people getting enshrined: After getting snubbed this year, Belichick feels like a lock for 2027 and it would be fitting if he were to go in with Gronkowski. Peterson, Big Ben and Gronk headline a long list of players who will be eligible for the first time next year. After two months of waiting, it appears that Aaron Donald is finally going to make his decision about whether he's actually going to make a return to the NFL after two years in retirement. According to Pro Football Talk, Donald's decision is expected to come this week . And let me just say, that's not a surprise at all. Earlier this month, I was asked to make a prediction about whether Donald would return , and if so, when it would happen. My prediction was that he would make the announcement between Aug. 9 and Aug. 16. If you look at everything that's happened with Donald in the month of August, all signs are pointing to a return. Let's do a quick rehash of everything that has happened on the Donald front this month: If Donald does return, the Rams will have to quickly get his contract situation figured out. Donald is already under contract with the Rams, and after he makes the decision to return, his old deal will instantly become reactivated. At that point, the Rams will be on the hook for about $30 million to Donald in 2026, so the team might have to restructure his deal so that it can fit under the salary cap. There's only one MVP in the NFL each year and we'll be making our predictions on that at some point down the road, but today, we're going to focus on a different type of MVP. Larry Fitzgerald had a 17-season career in becoming one of the NFL’s all-time best wide receivers, but his time in the NFL began long before that. Vikings coach Dennis Green, who was friends with Fitzgerald’s father, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., hired Fitzgerald as a boy ball at 14 years old. “I grew up watching legends being built right in front of me,” Fitzgerald said in a 14-minute speech. “Hall of Fame players like John Randle, Chris Doleman, Randall McDaniel and Warren Moon, who taught me what it means to demand more of yourself than anyone else ever would. Plus, they saw me. At 8 in the morning, before training camp practice, it was: ‘What’s up, Fitzy! Hey Little Fitz, can you grab me two wrist bands real quick.’ “I was being acknowledged by the greats, and if I wanted to ask a question — at the right time — about a play, they would always answer. Without that experience, I’m not here.” Here is the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where Fitzgerald became a first-ballot gold jacket player on Saturday. He got a bust in Canton after 17,492 career receiving yards, the second-most in NFL history behind Jerry Rice. His 1,432 career catches are also second all time while his 121 receiving touchdowns rank sixth. He was an 11-time Pro Bowl selection and made All-Pro in 2008. He did it with a team that didn’t always have star quarterbacks, as 22 of them threw at least one pass to Fitzgerald. Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill’s favorite stat to sum up Fitzgerald’s career is that Fitzgerald had more career tackles (41) than dropped passes (29). Fitzgerald, like the more than 300 Hall of Famers before him, had a long list of those to thank. Cris Carter, Kurt Warner, Emmitt Smith and Randy Moss were among the former players he called by name. “If you were paying attention, you heard some fundamental themes in this speech,” Fitzgerald said. “One, it’s not hard to find people who will tell you what you want to hear. Make a conscious effort to surround yourself with people who will tell you what you need to hear. The hard things. The uncomfortable things. Believe me, the people in that second group care about you far more than those in the first. “Two, life is short. Time is precious. And not one of us knows how much we have. So many of the people I mentioned today are no longer with us. Some gone much too soon. Make your time count. Fill every 24 hours with the passions and pursuits that mean the most to you. “And lastly, there’s not much traffic on the extra mile in life, so be sure to bring others along with you. I’ve talked about the people who supported, taught and inspired me. Copy their examples and remember: Don’t just pursue excellence for yourself. Help other people pursue it, too. That’s the part of this story that matters the most. Not the likes. Not the fame. But the people you travel with. The values you uphold. In the end, it’s not just about the excellence. It’s about the people who help get you there.” Fitzgerald’s father was instrumental in his success, and Fitzgerald honored him late in his speech. Fitzgerald Sr., who was widely known in the Twin Cities after 50 years as a sports reporter, died June 1 at the age of 71. “My dad, who I lost recently, is also here in spirit,” Fitzgerald said. He was the solid foundation of our family, and the standard I measure myself against. Dad, looking back, I know there were times you must have felt like you were carrying the weight of the world. But you always showed up, and your love, your willingness to sacrifice, and your consistency have been the blueprint I use to raise your grandsons.”

Five former NFL players are about to formally join the most exclusive fraternity in professional football. Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Roger Craig, Adam Vinatieri, and Luke Kuechly will become the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame during Saturday's induction ceremony. Located in Canton, Ohio, the Pro Football Hall of Fame was built in 1963. Since then, 387 former NFL players, coaches and executives have received gold jackets, bronze busts, a ring and a permanent place in pro football lore. This year's class will include one of the most prolific passers in football history, an equally prolific receiver, one of the most versatile running backs in NFL history, the NFL's all-time leading scorer and the second-youngest player to receive Hall of Fame induction. Here's how you can watch the ceremony, in addition to summaries of each member of this year's induction class. Brees never won league MVP, but he did capture Super Bowl MVP honors after leading the Saints to their first championship at the end of the 2009 season. One of the most efficient and prolific quarterbacks of all-time, Brees led the NFL in passing seven times, completion percentage six times and touchdown passes on four occasions. Fitzgerald is second only to Jerry Rice in career catches (1,432) and career receiving yards (17,492). During the 2008 playoffs, Fitzgerald caught 30 passes for 546 yards and seven touchdowns while helping the Cardinals reach the franchise's first Super Bowl. He caught seven passes for 127 yards and two scores in Arizona's Super Bowl loss to Pittsburgh. At 35, Kuechly is the second-youngest person to earn a Hall of Fame induction. The youngest was Gale Sayers, who was 34 when he was inducted back in 1977. Kuechly was one of the NFL's premier defensive players before injuries cut his career short after eight seasons. After winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, Kuechly won Defensive Player of the Year the following season and was named to seven straight Pro Bowls and was a five-time All-Pro. He helped spearhead a successful period in Panthers history that included three straight division titles and an NFC title in 2015. The NFL's all-time leading scorer, Vinatieri, ended two Super Bowls with winning field goals. In addition to his four Super Bowl wins, Vinatieri is also notorious for his two critical kicks in blizzard-like conditions against the Raiders during the Patriots' first championship run. One of the most versatile running backs in NFL history, Craig became the first player in history to post 1,000-yard rushing and receiving campaigns in the same season in 1985. His versatility was on full display in the prior year's Super Bowl, when he scored a Super Bowl record three touchdowns in the 49ers ' win over the Dolphins . Three years later, Craig amassed over 2,000 all-purpose yards during the regular season before becoming the first running back to have over 100 receiving yards in a Super Bowl. Arizona Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this Saturday in Canton, Ohio. Players have to be retired for five straight seasons to qualify for the Hall of Fame, and while Fitzgerald hasn't played in the NFL since 2020, the wide receiver has never officially retired -- and maybe never will. "I have not committed to retirement," Fitzgerald said this week, via the Cardinals' official website . That doesn't mean Fitzgerald is actively pondering a return to the gridiron, but he avoids the word "retirement." When he was a young boy, Fitzgerald's grandfather would talk with his friend about how retirement was deadly. The 42-year-old is done with football, not with life. "They'd talk about retirement killing more people in our country than anything," Fitzgerald said. "It always stuck with me. I just don't believe in retirement. I just think you transition into different phases, especially as an athlete. I was done at 38. Retire? There is no retirement in sight. "I protest the word more than the actual thing. So I just won't acknowledge that." Fitzgerald has spent his entire life around football, and it's fair to assume he will stay close the game in retir- ... his "next phase of life." As a youth, Fitzgerald was a ball boy for the Minnesota Vikings and head coach Dennis Green -- who would later coach Fitzgerald in Arizona. He found his way to the University of Pittsburgh for college, and after catching 161 passes for 2,677 yards and 34 touchdowns in just 26 games played, was selected by the Cardinals with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft . It didn't take Fitzgerald long to establish himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL . In his second NFL season, Fitzgerald led the league with 103 receptions. At 22-years-old, he was the youngest NFL player to catch 100 passes in a single season. Fitzgerald would go on to rack up nine 1,000-yard seasons, four 1,400-yard seasons and five seasons where he caught double-digit touchdowns. He was named to 11 Pro Bowls, led the league in receptions and receiving touchdowns twice, and earned the coveted Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award in 2016. Fitzgerald was a lifetime Cardinal, and saw more losses than wins in his NFL career. He played in just nine postseason matchups over 17 years, but did power an impressive run to Super Bowl XLIII in 2009 with Kurt Warner. In those four playoff games, Fitzgerald caught 30 passes for 546 yards and seven touchdowns. That's 136.5 receiving yards per game! He admitted there was a time where he considered leaving Arizona, but ultimately decided against it. "I would be lying to you if it didn't cross my mind, I didn't think about it, maybe even had conversations about it, but never seriously tried to put it in motion," Fitzgerald said, per ESPN . "I loved where I was at. And quite frankly, I don't know if it would've meant the same for me if I went to somewhere where it was already some super team." To this day, Fitzgerald ranks second all time in receiving yards (17,492) and receptions (1,432), trailing only the great Jerry Rice. Fitzgerald is looking forward to his induction into "Football Heaven" this weekend. But don't make the mistake of saying he's retired

The Panthers have lost eight of their past nine exhibition games, with that lone win in 2024 at Buffalo. Generally speaking, when a team loses a preseason game , it won't cover because the spreads are so low, and the Cats are indeed also 1-8 ATS in their past nine. Favorites are 5-1 in the past six Hall of Fame Games, for what that's worth. The Over has hit in the past four, and that's because set at such a minuscule total: 35.5 tonight, which is two points higher than any of the past four HOF games.
