Shane Steichen on Daniel Jones: We'll evaluate everything
Daniel Jones ended Sunday’s 42-7 loss to the Jaguars on the bench and Colts head coach Shane Steichen was asked if the quarterback will be spending more time there in the future. Jones was pulled in favor of Anthony Richardson after throwing his second interception of the game in the fourth quarter. It marked the first time that Richardson has gotten on the field this season and some have wondered if the 2023 first-round pick will get another chance in the starting job before his rookie deal is up. Steichen said, via James Boyd of TheAthletic.com, that the Colts are evaluating everything in light of a performance that can only be described as dreadful on Sunday. That’s not specific to Jones, but he bares almost no resemblance to the quarterback that had the Colts off to a great start during the 2025 season and he may still be limited by the torn Achilles that wound up ending his season. The Colts will host the Cowboys next Sunday and then face the Dolphins, Titans and Giants before a Week 13 bye. That Giants game would be a reunion for Jones, but it remains to be seen what role he’ll be in by that point in the season

Revisiting Panthers' blockbuster trade with Bears to draft Bryce Young: Chicago, Caleb Williams won big
This week, the No. 1 overall picks from the 2023 and 2024 NFL Drafts will be under the bright lights of primetime. Bryce Young and the Panthers open Week 8 with a crucial "Thursday Night Football" game against the Packers , and Caleb Williams and the Bears close out the week with a "Monday Night Football" showdown against the Seahawks . Both quarterbacks will face tough road tests against conference foes with postseason ambitions. And both quarterbacks are forever intertwined. Though Young is forever tied to 2023 No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud , and Williams is forever tied to the loaded 2024 class that included Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye , Young and Williams are a byproduct of one another. In March 2023, the Panthers moved heaven and earth to jump from the No. 9 pick to the No. 1 pick, an all-time blockbuster that shaped not only the two franchises but the league as a whole. With Young hoping to get Carolina back on track Thursday, we look back on the trade. The Panthers were one of several teams exploring a trade up for a quarterback, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported at the time . Carolina won out with a huge package. At the time, the Bears were committed to Justin Fields as their starting quarterback, even though they would have had plenty of options in the draft had they chosen that direction: Young, Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis were considered among the top prospects. But Fields, the No. 11 pick in 2021, had only been in the league two years. The results had been poor, but so, too, were the surroundings. Fields' top receiver in 2022 was Darnell Mooney , who failed to crack 500 receiving yards. Fields, who nearly broke the quarterback rushing record in 2022, would get one more year, and bringing Moore into the equation was crucial for Chicago. He was coming off a down 2022 season but had cracked 1,100 receiving yards each of the three years prior. The Panthers had been a mess ever since David Tepper bought them back in 2018. Tepper fired Ron Rivera midseason in 2019 and hired Matt Rhule in 2020, only to fire Rhule early in the 2022 season. In between, he fired GM Marty Hurney in 2020 and hired Scott Fitterer to fill that role, creating no coach-GM alignment. The Panthers went 29-53 across Tepper's first five years of ownership. They also cycled through quarterbacks after Cam Newton's decline and eventual departure. From 2018-22, Carolina had a different leading passer every season: Newton in 2018, Kyle Allen in 2019, Teddy Bridgewater in 2020, Sam Darnold in 2021 and Baker Mayfield in 2022. When Carolina moved up to No. 1 in 2023, it didn't know who it would take, but it thought the move "gave it the most options," according to Schefter. "Should the Panthers fall in love with a couple of quarterbacks, they would consider trading back a spot or two, according to a league source," a story by ESPN's Courtney Cronin and David Newton read . The Panthers ultimately landed on Young, though later reports said that coach Frank Reich, hired months earlier, preferred Stroud. While Tepper adamantly defended that the entire group was aligned on Young , he also curiously said that wasn't always the expectation. "Originally, we thought we were going to the No. 2 pick, and we thought we'd get C.J.," Tepper said . "We thought the Texans were going to take Bryce. And listen, we preferred Bryce. He was our No. 1 choice. We had a lot of conviction." That mess paled in comparison to the mess playing out on the field in Young's rookie year. Young struggled mightily, and an underwhelming offensive line and receiving corps didn't help. Young took 62 sacks, and his 4.6 net yards per attempt was — and still is — the worst since 2010 Jimmy Clausen . A collection of highly knowledgeable offensive minds — Reich, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and offensive line coach James Campen — never melded. Shane Steichen reiterates Daniel Jones is QB1: "He knows he's got to play better"
It’s been a rough stretch for Colts quarterback Daniel Jones. But head coach Shane Steichen reiterated to reporters in his Monday news conference that Jones will remain the team’s QB1 as Indianapolis heads to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars in Week 8. “He knows he’s got to play better ,” Steichen said, via Mike Chappell of Fox 45 Indianapolis, adding that he hasn’t lost confidence in Jones. The Colts have lost each of their last three games, but Jones’ string of poor play goes back to the Week 4 win over Washington. In those last four games, Jones has completed just 55 percent of his passes for 787 yards with one touchdown, four interceptions, and a lost fumble. He’s also been sacked 13 times in that span. “He’s proven that he can do it. So that’s where the confidence comes from ,” Steichen said, via Stephen Holder of ESPN. “And we need to get him back playing to that level that he was last year. It’s taking a little bit longer.” Overall this season, Jones has completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,398 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s lost three fumbles and been sacked 19 times — 7.3 percent of his dropbacks. Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 draft, would presumably be the next man up if the Colts were to make a change. But Steichen appears to be quite reluctant to go back to Richardson, who last started a game in 2024. Richardson has not yet appeared in a game in 2026. He was in for two games last year, completing one of his two passes. In his 17 career games with 15 starts, Richardson has completed 51 percent of his throws for 2,400 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Notably, the Colts have not defeated the Jaguars in Jacksonville since Sept. 2014. At least to start, it will be Jones trying to break that streak on Sunday

Steichen said after Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the Vikings that he has not considered a quarterback change. “Because I got a ton of faith in Daniel,” Steichen said, via James Boyd of TheAthletic.com. “The game plan today was to go in and run the football. Obviously, at the end he had the interception, and that happens in football.” Jones was 13-of-22 for 108 yards with an interception. Vikings defensive back Harrison Smith picked Jones on a pass intended for tight end Will Mallory with 1:08 remaining, ending any hope of a comeback. The Colts signed Daniel Jones to a two-year, $88 million extension in the offseason, even though he was returning from a torn right Achilles. Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson faces a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in Indiana. Per court records filed this week and obtained by Fox 59, Richardson was stopped by police in Carmel on October 12 for driving a car with an expired registration that belonged to a different vehicle. Officers reported smelling marijuana in the vehicle and that Richardson told them he had smoked in the car to avoid doing so in front of his children. A search of the vehicle found a jar containing marijuana as well as gummies that tested positive for THC. “We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time,” the Colts said in a statement. Court records show that a bench trial on the matter has been scheduled for January 4

The NFL trade deadline is right around the corner, and you're probably familiar with a few names that may or may not be on the trade block. Pass rushers Khalil Mack and Josh Sweat could be on the move. Fans are interested to see what happens with Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr ., and maybe Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard is shipped off to a contender. The trade chatter is usually more entertaining than the deals that actually take place before that Nov. 10 deadline, but we've been surprised before. Remember when the Jaguars sent cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams in 2019? Or when the Carolina Panthers dealt running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022? Those two players definitely needed a change of scenery. Who are some current NFL stars who could use one as well? Below, we will break down five players who more than likely won't be dealt at the trade deadline but whom we would like to see moved. Let's begin with a star running back. Jonathan Taylor is still one of the best running backs in the NFL, but his Indianapolis Colts are struggling. Indy just lost to the previously winless Titans, which led to the firing of general manager Chris Ballard on Monday. Quarterback Daniel Jones has really struggled this season. He threw for 269 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions on Sunday while registering a QBR of 24.5. Jones is averaging 215.0 passing yards per game and has thrown four touchdowns compared to six interceptions. At what point do you consider throwing Anthony Richardson back in the lineup? Taylor, on the other hand, has racked up 655 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns through the first six games of the season. He just became the fastest player to reach 8,000 career rushing yards since Adrian Peterson , and he should be carrying the rock for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Where could he fit? Seattle Seahawks , New England Patriots , Minnesota Vikings Jeffery Simmons has been the best interior defensive lineman in the NFL for two seasons now. The casual fan probably doesn't see much Titans football on "RedZone," but Simmons is a one-man wrecking crew for a terrible team. Simmons led all defensive tackles with 11.0 sacks and 17 tackles for loss last season, which earned him first-team All-Pro honors. He's on a similar trajectory this year, having recorded 4.0 sacks and six tackles for loss through six weeks. Simmons got to the quarterback twice this past Sunday in Indy, and logged SEVEN pressures from the interior. He just signed a three-year, $105.8 million extension four months ago. It doesn't seem likely that he's moved, but Simmons would be talked about like one of the best players in the NFL if he were wrecking games for a contender. Where could he fit? Chicago Bears , New England Patriots The Los Angeles Chargers are 0-6, and there's little hope this team can turn it around. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is on the hot seat — the same could be said for head coach Jim Harbaugh — and now, injuries are beginning to mount. If quarterback Justin Herbert couldn't figure it out with Ladd McConkey , Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt healthy, what's it going to look like with all of them out/injured? Herbert leads the NFL in interceptions this year with eight and is averaging a career-low 190.2 passing yards per game. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to start a season 0-6 while throwing an interception with at least two sacks taken in each game. It's been a disaster. Justin Herbert is not Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson . Giants have various possible options at quarterback (but not many good ones)
With Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart reportedly heading for season-ending knee surgery, the Giants have to make a decision about the quarterback position moving forward. Option A: The Jameis Winston experience, and everything that goes along with it — good, bad, and/or highly entertaining. Option B: Sign a free agent and see if he would be a better option to win games. At this point, however, most guys who are available would be unlikely to be able to start. Jimmy Garoppolo is the best option. Option C: Make a trade. There are some options. Here are some of the ones we noticed after perusing the various rosters and depth charts. Derek Carr: He’s still on the Saints reserve-retired list. A trade would be required, if there’s mutual interest. Anthony Richardson: If the Colts would be comfortable with Riley Leonard as the understudy to Daniel Jones, the Colts could finally get value for the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Joe Flacco: John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with Flacco in Baltimore. And Flacco has repeatedly shown he can still play. Shedeur Sanders: If the Browns are willing to move on from Sanders, Harbaugh possibly would want Shedeur. The Ravens were going to draft him in 2025, but he didn’t want to back up Lamar Jackson. Mason Rudolph: He has played a lot, and he may not have much of a future in Pittsburgh. Sam Howell: He’s the backup to Dak Prescott, and he has plenty of starting experience; the Cowboys could elevate Joe Milton III to take Prescott’s place. J.J. McCarthy: Jim Harbaugh loves him. John Harbaugh could be intrigued by him. Gardner Minshew: If the Cardinals are content to have Carson Beck as the backup to Jacoby Brissett, why not? He has 47 career starts. Mac Jones: He’s in the last year of his contract, and he played well last year in place of Brock Purdy. The Giants also could pilfer a player from a practice squad. Possibilities (not many) include Will Levis (Jets), Josh Johnson (Bengals), Joe Milton III (Cowboys), and Max Brosmer (Vikings)
