Giants have various possible options at quarterback (but not many good ones)
With Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart reportedly heading for season-ending knee surgery, the Giants have to make a decision about the quarterback position moving forward. Option A: The Jameis Winston experience, and everything that goes along with it — good, bad, and/or highly entertaining. Option B: Sign a free agent and see if he would be a better option to win games. At this point, however, most guys who are available would be unlikely to be able to start. Jimmy Garoppolo is the best option. Option C: Make a trade. There are some options. Here are some of the ones we noticed after perusing the various rosters and depth charts. Derek Carr: He’s still on the Saints reserve-retired list. A trade would be required, if there’s mutual interest. Anthony Richardson: If the Colts would be comfortable with Riley Leonard as the understudy to Daniel Jones, the Colts could finally get value for the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Joe Flacco: John Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with Flacco in Baltimore. And Flacco has repeatedly shown he can still play. Shedeur Sanders: If the Browns are willing to move on from Sanders, Harbaugh possibly would want Shedeur. The Ravens were going to draft him in 2025, but he didn’t want to back up Lamar Jackson. Mason Rudolph: He has played a lot, and he may not have much of a future in Pittsburgh. Sam Howell: He’s the backup to Dak Prescott, and he has plenty of starting experience; the Cowboys could elevate Joe Milton III to take Prescott’s place. J.J. McCarthy: Jim Harbaugh loves him. John Harbaugh could be intrigued by him. Gardner Minshew: If the Cardinals are content to have Carson Beck as the backup to Jacoby Brissett, why not? He has 47 career starts. Mac Jones: He’s in the last year of his contract, and he played well last year in place of Brock Purdy. The Giants also could pilfer a player from a practice squad. Possibilities (not many) include Will Levis (Jets), Josh Johnson (Bengals), Joe Milton III (Cowboys), and Max Brosmer (Vikings)

Steelers list Mason Rudolph as No. 2 QB
Mason Rudolph opened training camp as the Steelers’ No. 2 quarterback and he’s opening the regular season in the same spot. The Steelers listed Rudolph as their primary backup to Aaron Rodgers on their Week 1 depth chart. Will Howard is No. 3 and rookie Drew Allar is No. 4 in a deep quarterback room in Pittsburgh. Rudolph is the only quarterback other than Rodgers with regular season experience, which likely joined Howard’s sometimes sloppy preseason performance played a role in head coach Mike McCarthy’s decision. The Steelers were less clear at one of their starting cornerback spots. They list Joey Porter Jr. or Asante Samuel Jr. as the starter alongside Jamel Dean and Jalen Ramsey after Porter missed all of training camp while on the physically unable to perform list. Another split starting role is at tight end with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington while Dylan Cook is listed as the starting right tackle ahead of first-round pick Max Iheanachor

The Steelers kept four quarterbacks, declining to expose Will Howard or Drew Allar to the waiver wire. Aaron Rodgers, now in his 22nd season, has never experienced a four-quarterback room. “I was thinking it was a possibility , but I don’t think I’ve been on a roster with four quarterbacks,” Rodgers said Wednesday, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “Obviously when you do that, you’re taking away a spot from another place in the team. But at the same time, if the best 53 are going to make it -- and not saying they did -- I think those four are part of the best 53.” The four quarterbacks on the active roster, which include veteran Mason Rudolph, also is a first for coach Mike McCarthy. This season is unique for the Steelers with Rodgers in his final season, leaving the team with an uncertain future at the position. Rudolph, Howard and Allar could compete for the job in 2027. “I’m happy for all those guys,” Rodgers said. “Obviously looking to the future, those other three guys are going to have a chance when I’m done. And with the growth you saw with Will and obviously with Drew being drafted so far, but also playing well in camp, I’m not surprised at all and I’m excited about those guys’ future.” The Packers had a plan with 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love sitting behind Rodgers for three seasons before taking the reins. The Jets had no plan behind Rodgers and started Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook last season before trading for Geno Smith to start this season. The Steelers drafted Howard in the sixth round in 2025 and Allar in the third round in 2026. Rodgers watched Howard and Allar on television from his home as they played the third preseason game against the Bills last weekend. “I thought the entire camp, it was never too big for them,” Rodgers said. “They looked really comfortable out there, and I thought they did a lot of good things moving to football, being efficient. “There’s learning experiences, but you look at my first preseason, it was not pretty at all. I didn’t play good until about the second half of the fourth preseason game. So, they’re definitely ahead of where I was at, and mentally, they’re grasping the offense and the checks and the cans, and I’m really proud about those guys.” Rodgers, drafted in the first round in 2005, went 20-of-37 for 172 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in four games in his first preseason

Rudolph, who is still with the Steelers after a one-year break with the Titans, explains that he, and his team, are happy that Garrett has been traded out of the division, from Cleveland to the Rams. Via Steelers Depot , Rudolph said this in an appearance on teammate Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast: “As a Pittsburgh Steeler, I’m thrilled that he is no longer in the AFC North. I think [coach] Mike McCarthy’s fired up about that, I think [offensive coordinator] Brian Angelichio is fired up about that. I know our tackles are fired up about that. . . . And the top of my frontal lobe , yes.” If the season goes as planned, Rudolph wouldn’t have been on the field at the same time as Garrett. And Pittsburgh won’t see Garrett at all in 2026, unless both teams make it to the Super Bowl. That destination is far more likely for one team than it is for the other
