The Packers are signing free agent quarterback Cam Miller to the practice squad, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. The Dolphins waived him Aug. 30, and he remained a free agent until Monday. The Packers have Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor on the active roster. They still list Kedon Slovis on the practice squad. The Raiders made Miller a sixth-round pick in 2025, and the Dolphins signed him off of Las Vegas’ practice squad late last season. Miller, 25, has never appeared in a regular-season game

The Raiders naming Kirk Cousins their starting quarterback to open the 2026 season was hardly a surprise. While Las Vegas had been projected to draft Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall for months, the team’s brass had said publicly that its preference was for a rookie quarterback to sit and learn behind a veteran. But now that it’s official, Mendoza has become a member of a rare group of quarterbacks from recent years. Mendoza is the first quarterback since Baker Mayfield in 2018 not to start Week 1 after being selected at No. 1 overall. Mayfield’s situation was not particularly unusual at the time, as Jared Goff had been through the same thing in 2016. But since then, Kyler Murray (2019), Joe Burrow (2020), Trevor Lawrence (2021), Bryce Young (2023), Caleb Williams (2024), and Cam Ward (2025) have all been their respective club’s Week 1 starter after being selected at No. 1 overall. Since Matthew Stafford was selected at No. 1 overall in 2009, only Goff, Mayfield, and Mendoza have started the season as QB2. Sam Bradford (2010), Cam Newton (2011), Andrew Luck (2012), and Jameis Winston (2015) all started the season opener. Mayfield made it into a game by Week 3, taking over for an injured Tyrod Taylor to lead the Browns to their first victory since 2016 with a 21-17 victory over the Jets. He took over as Cleveland’s starter the following week. It took longer for Goff to ascend to QB1 for the Rams in 2016, as he began his tenure as Los Angeles’ starter in Week 11 with a 14-10 loss to Miami. Mendoza’s development will remain a priority for the Raiders, even as he won’t receive starters’ reps in the regular season. “ Early work, late work. More meetings ,” Kubiak said on Wednesday. “Plenty of time on the field between drills with [QBs] coach [Mike] Sullivan and [offensive coordinator] coach [Andrew] Janocko. Every player that is not starting the first game, that is helping us on the look team, we’re just trying to find every edge we can find to continue to get him better and his teammates better.” Aside from those selected at No. 1 overall, there are plenty of QBs who haven’t started early and ended up being successful. “I think there are so many examples both ways,” Kubiak said. “I think the most important thing with the quarterback room or any other position is to build competition within the room. That makes players so much better faster than coaching, when they have a guy in front of them that they can look up to and see how something’s done — that’s going to accelerate their growth.” We’ll see when Mendoza becomes Las Vegas’ starter. The Packers made a different choice than the Steelers when it came to playing their starting quarterback on Thursday night, but they didn’t leave Jordan Love in the game for long. Love got the ball after the opening kickoff and moved the team 46 yards over 10 plays in a drive that ended with a field goal. Love exited the game after that drive and Tyrod Taylor is now at quarterback for Green Bay. Love’s night looked like it would be slightly shorter, but Steelers defensive lineman Dean Lowry was flagged for unnecessary roughness on a Trey Smack 58-yard field goal attempt. The rookie hit the kick, but the Packers took the penalty and turned back to Smack for a shorter kick after an incompletion on third down. Love connected with Jayden Reed for a 19-yard gain, but a pass to running back MarShawn Lloyd resulted in a four-yard loss and Love finished 3-of-5 for 18 yards. Rookies report to Green Bay Packers training camp on Monday, which means that the full coaching staff will be back to work starting this week. The Packers haven’t made many transactions since the signing of their initial group of undrafted free agents post-draft, but that seems to be changing soon, as Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports is reporting that the Packers will be working out kicker Lenny Krieg tomorrow. Krieg, a German national, originally played soccer before transitioning to American football after his brother spent time in Wisconsin. Eventually, Krieg played in both the German league for the Berlin Adler and the European League with the Stuttgart Surge. In 2025, after kicking a perfect series of attempts at the NFL Scouting Combine, he earned an opportunity with the Atlanta Falcons. Krieg was the Falcons’ international exemption player last year and was not counted against the team’s practice squad numbers. After the year, he signed a reserve-futures deal with the New York Jets , as the Falcons cleared their coaching staff and front office. Krieg remained a member of the Jets until he was waived by the team on June 1st. Two days later, the Jets signed veteran kicker Jason Sanders . If Krieg ends up joining the Packers, he has the opportunity to become their international exemption player. Right now, Green Bay ’s exempt player is edge rusher Dante Barnett , who was signed by the team in late October last year. Don’t be surprised if there’s a Krieg for Barnett swap tomorrow. If Krieg is added, this move would give the Packers three kickers, including rookie draft pick Trey Smack and also Lucas Havrisik . Generally, Green Bay doesn’t keep more than two kickers on the roster, so Havrisik could be on thin ice moving forward.
