The San Francisco 49ers (5-0) host the Washington Commanders (1-3-1) on Monday Night Football. San Francisco aims to extend their division lead, while Washington seeks an upset after a costly clock management error in their last game. Despite injuries, the Niners have remained undefeated, whereas the Commanders have struggled, particularly with their run game efficiency
The Dolphins have added a running back. Miami has claimed Kaytron Allen off of waivers after Washington let him go earlier this week, the team announced on Friday. A sixth-round pick in this year’s draft, Allen had appeared in all four games for Washington, taking 12 carries for 41 yards. He also appeared on special teams, taking 29 snaps on the unit. The Dolphins had a need for more depth at running back, particularly after De’Von Achane suffered a torn ACL. Jaylen Wright started for the Dolphins at running back last week, though Ollie Gordon was the leading rusher with 100 yards on nine carries
His brief tenure with the Commanders has already come to an end

Austin Ekeler has been activated for Week 4 and is expected to contribute as a third-down back and kick returner for the Washington Commanders. He was signed earlier in the week and will be looking to make an impact alongside Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Kaytron Allen, especially with Rachaad White sidelined
Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler recently signed a one-year deal with the organization. He's back with Washington after only playing two games last season due to a torn Achilles tendon. The expectation was that Ekeler would play a depth role, but he might have a bigger impact than expected right away. Fellow back Rachaad White (shoulder) has been ruled out for the Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Jacory Croskey-Merritt will be the lead back with Kaytron Allen and Ekeler getting snaps behind him. Ekeler might be on the field more than expected during his first game back with the team
Drops: Kaytron Allen
Veteran running back Austin Ekeler is set to return to the Commanders. Multiple reports on Monday morning say that Ekeler is expected to sign with the team as long as he passes a physical. Ekeler tore his Achilles while playing for the Commanders last season, but has been cleared to return and he worked out for the Panthers recently. The move to bring Ekeler back comes after Rachaad White suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks. Jeremy McNichols is already on injured reserve, which leaves the Commanders with Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Kaytron Allen as healthy backs on the 53-man roster. Ekeler was injured in Week 2 last season. He had 77 carries for 367 yards and four touchdowns for Washington during the 2024 season

Jacory Croskey-Merritt's Week 1 performance makes him a reasonable flex option for Week 2 against the Cowboys
Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt was productive as the team's lead back in the season opener against the Eagles, rushing for 63 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. The second-year back handled 16 of 27 carries by Washington running backs and notably didn't see the field again after fumbling on the team's final drive. Rookie Kaytron Allen replaced Croskey-Merritt on the final drive, and after fumbling four times as a rookie, he could start to cede work to the rookie if it continues. However, Croskey-Merritt is still the team's most dynamic and explosive rusher and could be primed for a good day on the ground in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas just allowed Cam Skattebo and the Giants to run for 165 yards on 4.5 yards per carry in Week 1, making Croskey-Merritt a solid flex option in Week 2
Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt didn't take over the backfield in Week 1, but the rushing split was hard to miss. He carried 16 times for 63 yards and a touchdown against Philadelphia. Rachaad White had seven carries, while rookie Kaytron Allen had four. The snaps were much closer, with Croskey-Merritt at 49% and White at 41%, so White isn't disappearing from this offense. He also caught both of his targets, while Croskey-Merritt's only reception went for minus-seven yards. Still, Washington gave Croskey-Merritt 16 of its 27 running back carries, and he punched in a one-yard touchdown late in the first half. He did put the ball on the ground once, though the Commanders recovered it. Croskey-Merritt was already listed first on the depth chart before the opener. The game told us more than the depth chart did. For now, he looks like the back Washington wants handling most of the rushing work
Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) was not participating in Monday's practice, but it sounds like he should return to the field next week, according to John Keim of ESPN. Croskey-Merritt is believed to be dealing with a minor groin injury that caused him to sit out of the team's final two preseason games. But as long as JCM is back on the practice field next week, he should be in line to play in the Week 1 regular-season opener against the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 13. Heading into his second year in the NFL, Croskey-Merritt is positioned to lead Washington on early downs, but his fantasy upside will be capped by the presence of newcomer and pass-game specialist Rachaad White (hamstring), who is expected to see most of the targets out of the backfield as a receiver. Both backs are a little banged up, though, so it is possible that rookie Kaytron Allen sees a bigger role out of the gates in Week 1. In season-long redraft leagues, Croskey-Merritt should be drafted as an RB3/flex with upside in his sophomore campaign. The former seventh-rounder from Arizona impressed with 805 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 175 carries in his first NFL season, adding only nine receptions for 68 yards through the air in 17 games
Jeremy McNichols placed on Injured Reserve due to a quadriceps injury
Jacory Croskey-Merritt (lower body) out for Washington Commanders' preseason finale
Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt was limited in practice on Monday with an undisclosed injury, but head coach Dan Quinn clarified on Tuesday that the running back is dealing with a lower-body injury. According to Ben Standig, it is a groin injury but is not considered significant. Croskey-Merritt was spotted catching passes and jogging lightly on Tuesday, and he could be on his way to another limited practice. The second-year back led the Commanders with 805 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 175 carries last year and added nine catches for 68 yards. He could return to full practice later this week and still be good for a regular workload in Week 1 against the Eagles, but his progress will definitely be important to monitor. Rachaad White (hamstring) is also working through an injury that isn't considered to be serious, leaving rookies Kaytron Allen and Robert Henry, along with veteran Craig Reynolds, as the Commanders' healthy running backs right now. Croskey-Merritt is the RB37 in RotoBaller's rankings, with White not far behind him at RB40. Watch carefully to see who is ready for Week 1, since both have good upside but also significant risk factors with their current injuries
