Safety DeShon Elliott is back on the Steelers’ active roster. Elliott has not played this season due to hamstring and knee injuries that led the team to put him on injured reserve in August, but he’s set to make his debut against the Saints on Sunday after being activated from injured reserve. Elliott was limited to five games last season by those injuries. He had 38 tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. The Steelers also announced that they have elevated wide receivers Brandon Johnson and Brandon Smith from the practice squad. Ben Skowronek has been ruled out, which leaves DK Metcalf, Germie Bernard, and Kaden Wetjen as the healthy wideouts on the active roster in Pittsburgh
The Steelers are heading into Week 6 short on healthy wide receivers. Michael Pittman is on injured reserve and the team is set to be without Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek as well when they take the field in Tampa this Sunday. That leaves three wideouts on the active roster, although rookie Kaden Wetjen has yet to play an offensive snap yet this season. The team has three more wideouts on the practice squad and quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed his faith in Brandon Smith, Brandon Johnson, and Isaiah Hodgins while discussing the team’s options on Wednesday. “I have a lot of trust in those guys,” Rodgers said, via the team’s website. “I’ve always been a fan of Brandon Johnson; he had his locker right next to mine last year and we had some great conversations. He’s played and played well when he’s gotten opportunities. Obviously, I know B. Smith from New York and I’m a big believer in him. And then Isaiah was here with us last year, then went to New York and made a bunch of plays. I like those guys a lot.” The Steelers’ ability to weather the injuries should be helped by how Rodgers uses all of the available targets. Running back Jaylen Warren and tight end Pat Freiermuth are tied with DK Metcalf for the team lead in catches while tight end Darnell Washington has also been used frequently in the passing game
Roman Wilson expected to miss time due to finger injury
The Steelers have ruled out two wide receivers for the rest of today’s game. Roman Wilson dislocated a finger, and Ben Skowronek has a calf injury. Neither will return. Their injuries leave only DK Metcalf, Germie Bernard, Brandon Smith and Kaden Wetjen available for the final quarter and a half. Michael Pittman went on injured reserve this week with a foot injury. Wilson had one target before leaving before the end of the first half. Steelers running back Jaylen Warren scored his second touchdown of the day on a 50-yard run, giving Pittsburgh a 24-16 lead over the Colts with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter. Warren has 68 yards rushing and 81 receiving. His first touchdown was an 80-yard catch-and-run. Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt returned after being poked in the eye in the first half
Steelers make roster moves, including activation of Joey Porter Jr. and release of multiple players
