Washington Commanders roster moves to cut to 53 players
Quarterback Sam Hartman's time is up in Washington
Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels made his preseason debut on Saturday. If you blink, you may have missed it. Daniels got the start and handled one drive. It was a three-and-out that netted one yard. In the three plays that Daniels won on the field, he was 0-for-1 passing and suffered a 10-yard sack. Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis, a seventh-round rookie from Rutgers, played quarterback after Daniels. Backup Marcus Mariota is currently out with a knee injury. He’s expected to miss the rest of the preseason with an MCL sprain. The Commanders play the Ravens next weekend before opening the regular season at Philadelphia
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn shared plans for Saturday's game, but Jayden Daniels' status is uncertain
Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota has taken his last snap of the preseason. Mariota started Friday night’s game, but left during the team’s first offensive possession and did not return. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that he has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL and that he will not play again before the regular season. It’s not clear at this point if he will be healthy enough to serve as Jayden Daniels’s backup for Washington’s Week 1 game against the Eagles. Sam Hartman and seventh-round pick Athan Kaliakmanis are the team’s other quarterbacks. The Commanders could add another healthy body to get them through final weeks of the preseason
Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee) suffered a sprained MCL in the team's preseason opener on Friday against the Miami Dolphins that will likely keep him out for the rest of the preseason, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN. It's unclear at this time if Mariota's knee injury will keep him sidelined going into Week 1 of the 2026 regular season versus the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 13. Either way, the Commanders might be in the market for a veteran signal-caller to provide more depth behind starter Jayden Daniels. The other QBs on the roster are Sam Hartman and undrafted rookie Athan Kaliakmanis. The 32-year-old Mariota played a big part in the Commanders' offense a year ago with Daniels only playing in seven games due to injury, although he went 2-6 in his eight starts while throwing for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in his 11 total games played

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels will not play in Friday's preseason opener against the Dolphins due to a dispute over his former number at LSU. Several other projected starters will also sit out
Head coach Dan Quinn of the Commanders noted that WR Van Jefferson has been standing out during offseason workouts. The team is practicing in a split-group format to evaluate depth, giving more reps to players like Athan Kaliakmanis, Sam Hartman, and Sonny Styles. Quinn highlighted Styles's defensive understanding and compared his communication to Jayden Daniels's backfield operations. The focus on depth is a key goal after last season
