Former Steelers OC Todd Haley says Pittsburgh WRs could mimic legendary trio
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ receiving corps is a group that has been ridiculed over the last pair of seasons, and rightfully so. While they’ve had a legitimate No. 1 in each of those seasons in George Pickens and DK Metcalf, the depth behind them (or lack thereof) has been among the worst in the NFL in each year. The likes of Scotty Miller , Van Jefferson , Allen Robinson , Calvin Austin , Marquez Valdes-Scantling , and Adam Thielen were the names expected to be legitimate options in that span. However, the Steelers added Michael Pittman Jr. via trade with the Indianapolis Colts and Germie Bernard in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Joining me on the latest episode of The Pump Fake , former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley said that Pittman is the most important addition of the offseason for Pittsburgh. “Michael Pittman is a solid 1B, 2A – however you want to look at it,” Haley said. “He’s experienced, he understands how to play. I’m sure he and Aaron will get on the same page very quickly… I think the addition of Pittman is the most important addition for the Steelers offense” Haley also noted that if Germie Bernard can come along quickly, Pittsburgh could end up having a trio similar to the one he had as offensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008 with Larry Fitzgerald , Anquan Boldin , and Steve Breaston when Arizona made it to the Super Bowl. “With Bernard, he’s a key component,” Haley said. “How quickly can he come along? It’s hard as a young receiver to just show up and all of a sudden play against NFL coverages and defenses. So [their additions] are huge. When you have just one [receiver], it’s nice, but defenses can take one away. But when you have two, and maybe three, that’s what we had the benefit of having in Arizona. We not only had a great quarterback that understood where to put the football, and did it accurately, we had [the question] of who are you going to add extra coverage to? Larry Fitzgerald? Anquan Boldin? And if you do that, Steve Breaston was obviously fast enough to hurt you pretty quickly.” Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston are one of just five trios in NFL history to all have 1,000 yards in a season, and the last trio to do it back in that 2008 season. And while it would be unfair to expect the current Steelers’ trio to replicate that, the offense would do serious damage if they can come anywhere close to Arizona’s high-flying offense that faced Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLIII. 49ers receiver wants to jump ship to Commanders
Brandon Aiyuk has not played for the San Francisco 49ers in almost two years, but the one-time All-Pro receiver does not believe his career is over. In fact, Aiyuk continues to stay away from the 49ers facilities, but says he wants the team to cut him, at which point he says he will immediately sign with the Washington Commanders . It’s not clear to anyone if Aiyuk will play in the NFL next season, but the Los Angeles Rams play the 49ers twice and the Commanders once. They might get their chance. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Aiyuk reiterated his desire to be cut by the 49ers and emphasized a desire to play with the Commanders. Washington’s GM is Adam Peters, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers. It would give Aiyuk a chance to play with quarterback Jayden Daniels and pair up with Terry McLaurin . The Commanders have an apparent weakness at the position, set to start Treylon Burks and rookie Antonio Williams , if not Luke McCaffrey , Dyami Brown , or Jaylin Lane . Former Rams receiver Van Jefferson is also on the roster. It seems to leave a huge opening for Aiyuk, a receiver who had 1,342 yards in 2023, his last full season in the league. Aiyuk, a first round pick in 2020, has averaged 62 yards per game in his career. He recently turned 28. But do the Commanders want him as much as he wants to go to D.C.? The team will hold five open practices for fans on August 1, August 7, August 8, August 18, and August 19, along with six open practices exclusively for Season Ticket Members on August 3, August 4, August 5, August 10, August 11, and August 12. All practices will begin at 8:30 a.m. EST and are subject to change. The 2026 Training Camp will be presented by BigBear.ai and supported by cornerstone partners Bank of America, Clark Construction and Pepsi. Fans can claim their free tickets for training camp open practices beginning June 23 at 10:00 a.m. by visiting Commanders.com/TrainingCamp while supplies last. To accommodate as many fans as possible, general admission fans can claim a maximum of six tickets and one parking pass for one day of Training Camp. All parking will be on site at the BigBear.ai Performance Center, and all fans must have a parking pass to access the lot. Okonkwo, a fourth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2022, was one of the more sought-after free agents this offseason, ranking No. 36 on NFL.com writer Gregg Rosenthal’s top 101 pending free agents list in March. Okonkwo was one of the Titans’ most reliable weapons during his four-year contract, catching at least 50 passes in each of the last three seasons and accounting for five touchdowns. But Okonkwo was looking for another opportunity at 26 years old, and he feels like the Commanders, whose stadium is just a few miles away from where he went to college at the University of Maryland, are the best team to get the most out of his skill set. Not much is known about the scheme, but based on Blough’s history as a player, it’s believed that it will implement more play-action passes and put players in motion more often, similar to Ben Johnson’s system with the Chicago Bears . Commanders RB Rachaad White looks like “an incredible bargain”

Enjoy! JP Finlay A new offense and new defense means the work doesn’t stop for Washington during the NFL break Rookie WR Antonio Williams knows how to get separation. He has a chance for a real role in this offense, as does Treylon Burks . The former first-rounder just needs to stay healthy, something he’s been unable to do so far in his NFL career. Burks did tell me this year feels like a fresh start. Quinn also went out of his way to salute the strong summers for veterans Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson . Quick note on Henry – he’s wearing the 30 jersey and when he’s on the field looks a bit like Austin Ekeler . He’s my early pick for preseason leader in rush yards (which does not mean a roster spot but is a silly prediction game we play on the Beltway Football podcast). Ben Sinnott and Chig Okonkwo had strong offseasons. David Blough ’s offense is going to offer more verticality for the tight end position and expect both to be able to show their athleticism. Okonkwo will be the lead dog at the position but Sinnott might finally be able to prove why he was a Top 100 pick. Connerly looks bigger and with broader shoulders than his rookie season. Still the single moment that stood out for me came from the conclusion of minicamp practices when the entire team ran a series of short sprints. [Laremy] Tunsil – the five-time Pro Bowler going into his 11th season and with career earnings of well over $100 million – was grinding out the June sprints. Actions not words. I stood on the sideline watching practice with former Redskins RB Ricky Ervins and Commanders team president Mark Clouse . Ervins told a story about the first time he played at RFK and saw the stands bouncing and explained the scene nearly drove him to tears. He asked Clouse if the bounding seats would be re-created at the new stadium, and the team prez explained that it would for a portion of the seats. It was a cool moment of the past meeting the future, something the organization is trying to do and something the fan base desperately wants. The Athletic (paywall) The line will do a lot of zone blocking Quinn said repeatedly during these nonpadded workouts that it’s hard to get real evaluations on offensive linemen in the spring because so much of the job revolves around physicality. What we do know: The offensive line will use a primarily zone-blocking scheme reminiscent of the one Mike Shanahan employed in Washington from 2010 through 2013 — a system he perfected in Denver in the 1990s. Zone blocking in the run game is exactly as it sounds: Offensive linemen block an area rather than a man. It requires linemen to be athletic and on the move, and results in a lot of double-teams on defensive linemen. “Under-center snaps with some wide zone — with some pulling — I’ve done it before,” said Nick Allegretti , who is moving from guard to center. “But it’s gonna be a bigger part of the bulk of that offense. I’m just getting out in space.” Because there was no tackling during these workouts, any long rushing touchdown was kind of fake. But during one workout last week, Allegretti and guard Sam Cosmi celebrated a supposed score by jumping on each other because they had pulled and led a running back into the end zone some 25 yards downfield — just how Blough drew it up. Heavy.com There was a time, just 2 years ago, when running back Rachaad White saw his value skyrocket to the point he was being talked about as a player who might reset the market for his position. Before the 2024 season, after he put up over 1,500 yards of total offense in 2023, White’s value on the open market was thought to be approaching $10 million per season. Jefferson played a hefty total of offensive snaps (582) across 16 regular-season appearances with the Titans in 2025 but failed to manifest much production across those opportunities, finishing with just a 29-350-1 line. He made similar things happen with Pittsburgh in 2024 (24-276-2 on 40 targets) and now seems destined for much of the same with the Commanders in 2026, given the team's lack of proven options behind top WR Terry McLaurin. All of Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks and rookie third-round pick Antonio Williams arguably boast more developmental upside at this stage, but Jefferson's experience and reliability could still allow him to lead that group in snaps

Germie Bernard already impressing Steelers coaches at OTAs
The Pittsburgh Steelers have lacked any depth at the wide receiver position for the last several years. With the likes of Van Jefferson , Scotty Miller , Allen Robinson , and Marquez Valdes-Scantling all getting notable snaps in recent memory, Pittsburgh’s receiving corps has rightfully been the butt of many jokes. The Steelers finally addressed their lack of pass-catchers this offseason, trading for Michael Pittman and drafting Germie Bernard out of Alabama in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio was asked about Bernard on Tuesday and raved about his preparation. “He has risen to that challenge with great study habits outside of the building in addition to what he is doing daily,” Angelichio said via Nick Farabaugh . Angelichio also added they feel the confidence to “push the envelope” with Bernard early on. Bernard has a real chance to be the No.3 receiver as the team’s starting slot receiver, with his competition boiling down to third-year receiver Roman Wilson . Ben Skowronek will get a roster spot as the team’s special teams ace, but won’t be called upon as a receiver at anything resembling a high clip. Considering what we’ve seen from Wilson in his first two years, the No. 3 spot feels like Bernard’s to lose. Let us know what you think in the comments .
