Saints-49ers trade grades: New Orleans adds Zamir White after onslaught of RB injuries
The second week of the NFL preseason closed with a trade. According to ESPN , the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers agreed to a deal that sends linebacker Deion Jones to the Bay Area in exchange for running back Zamir White . The transaction addresses depth for both teams, particularly for the Saints, with No. 2 running back Alvin Kamara nursing an MCL sprain . White signed with the 49ers less than two weeks ago. He inked a one-year deal worth $1.2 million and was projected to enter the season on the lower rungs of San Francisco's depth chart. Instead, he arrives in New Orleans with a chance to see playing time early in the campaign. White has never played a snap outside of Las Vegas, as he spent the first four years of his career with the Raiders and accumulated 736 rushing yards over 45 games. Jones landed on the Saints' roster a few days earlier on Aug. 7 by way of a one-year, $1.3 million contract. While he was an every-week starter for the Atlanta Falcons in each of his first six professional seasons, he filled a smaller role across three different teams over the last four years. Jones most recently played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and tallied 29 tackles in 17 games last year. Below are trade grades for the Saints and 49ers. Kamara's injury is a boon to Travis Etienne , who should take firm command of the No. 1 running back role in New Orleans if the former's absence carries into the regular season. It creates depth concerns in the backfield, though, especially since Kamara is not the only one on the shelf. Devin Neal aggravated a hamstring injury in Saturday's preseason game, and Audric Estime hurt his ankle in the preseason opener, leaving the Saints without the second, fourth and fifth options on their unofficial depth chart. Adding White to the group should keep the running backs afloat through the end of training camp, and he is capable of eating up a few snaps in the opening weeks of the regular season if called upon. Boosting the running back depth without taking on any additional salary is a win for the Saints, especially since the linebacker they are parting with was no lock to make the roster in the first place. Jones was a cut candidate whom the team listed as a fourth-teamer. The 49ers were in need of linebacker depth with only Fred Warner and Tatum Bethune available to them, and Jones fits the mold of a third option. He could even push Bethune for the primary backup role, but the latter made eight starts in 2025 when Warner suffered his gruesome ankle injury and may still factor into the team's plans after making those important contributions. Regardless of how Jones fits into the equation, all San Francisco had to part with to acquire him was a deep backup who, at best, was sixth in line for carries. Removing players from behind Christian McCaffrey is always a risk given his extensive injury history, but the 49ers have plenty of more enticing backups they would turn to before White, who might not have even made the roster in the first place. The team also just signed Khalil Herbert in a corresponding move to Patrick Taylor Jr.'s landing on injured reserve, so the cupboard is far from bare

Zach Wilson: I would love to be the No. 2 QB in New Orleans
Tyler Shough did not play any quarterback for the Saints on Saturday, but the two players in contention to be his backup both saw action against the Jaguars. Spencer Rattler started the game and went 8-of-11 for 42 yards while losing a fumble on one of the two sacks he took. The team’s opening drive ended with a touchdown, but it started on the Jacksonville 9-yard-line and ended after one Audric Estime run. The Saints also kicked a field goal while Rattler was in the game. Zach Wilson replaced Rattler and led two scoring drives in the second quarter. They moved the ball again in the third with Wilson at the helm, but a missed field goal kept the Saints from putting more points on the board. Wilson finished the day 11-of-16 for 145 yards and a touchdown. After the game, Wilson was asked if he thinks he made a case for jumping ahead of Rattler on the depth chart. “I don’t think about it like that ,” Wilson said. “Obviously I’m here to compete. I would love to be the two, I would love to find my way up there. That’s why I chose to come here, to have an opportunity to compete, but it’s out of my control. . . . I’m still young, but I feel like I’ve been able to play in a lot of games and see a lot of different things, and so I feel like it’s been able to slow down a little bit for me. Being able to use that to my advantage and just see how good I can be and, at the end of the day, whatever happens happens.” Head coach Kellen Moore didn’t commit to any changes to how the quarterback reps are doled out in practice and said he thought Rattler did some positive things, but a repeat of Saturday’s outing in the team’s next preseason game could lead to a change in plans for the 53-man roster in New Orleans

Tyler Shough working out with teammates in San Diego
Tyler Shough is the Saints’ unquestioned starter heading into 2026. The quarterback, in only his second season, is also the team’s leader. Shough organized an outing with teammates in San Diego. He has said Drew Brees helped set up the outing, and Shough’s social media photos and video on Wednesday show the Hall of Fame quarterback. Shough’s teammates Juwan Johnson, Chris Olave, Travis Etienne, Bryce Lance, Barion Brown, Audric Estime and Noah Fant are among those in Shough’s post , per Katherine Terrell of ESPN. Audric Estime No Longer a Player Who Needs to Be Rostered
Spending time on the practice squads of the Eagles and New Orleans Saints after being released by the Broncos ahead of the 2025 season, second-year running back Audric Estime eventually worked his way onto the Saints' active roster and finished the year with 204 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown in the final two games of the season. However, any glimmer of hope heading into the 2026 season was dashed when the Saints made Travis Etienne Jr. the highest-paid free agent running back on the open market, relegating Estime to a rotational backup spot at best. With veteran Alvin Kamara still on the roster and 2025 sixth-round pick Devin Neal recovered from the hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve, the running back room is deep, and Estime is by no means a lock to stick on the 53-man roster. It bears noting that Neal was unable to finish the final session of OTAs, so his attendance will need to be monitored when the team returns for minicamp practices on Tuesday. That said, barring injury or a trade that sees the depth chart dramatically thinned ahead of him, Estime is a dynasty cut candidate with no clear path to fantasy relevance

A fifth-round pick by the Broncos in the 2024 draft, Estime saw a fairly consistent role over the second half of his rookie season, but he didn't display much upside. Denver attempted to slip him through to the practice squad after adding J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey to the backfield last offseason, but Estime wound up trying his luck with Philadelphia instead before eventually landing in New Orleans and making his Saints debut in Week 10 as injuries hit the running back room. The Notre Dame product handled lead back duties over the final two games, turning 35 carries into 157 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding a 6-47-0 line through the air. Estime's 4.71 40-yard time at the combine puts a firm ceiling on his upside, but he looks the part of a classic power back at 5-foot-11 and 227 pounds and recorded seven broken tackles on only 46 carries in 2025. The Saints brought in Travis Etienne to be their new lead back and still have Alvin Kamara around, at least for now, but Estime could be a better fit for a short-yardage and goal-line role than the team's other depth options at RB

Audric Estime Buried on Saints'’ Depth Chart
New Orleans Saints running back Audric Estime was called into action late in the 2025 season, and he handled himself admirably, churning out top-13 fantasy finishes in Weeks 17 and 18, but after a busy Saints offseason, he's been pushed well down the depth chart toward fantasy irrelevancy. New Orleans signed Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year, $48 million deal, and with rumors of a potential Alvin Kamara trade growing quieter in recent weeks, the Saints' running back depth chart currently consists of Etienne, Kamara, Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, Ty Chandler, and Estime. While it's unlikely New Orleans carries more than four backs into the regular season, even if Estime does make the team, the traffic in front of him will make it nearly impossible to find any repeatable success. With only 508 career rushing yards and three touchdowns across his first two seasons with Denver and New Orleans, the 2024 fifth-round pick out of Notre Dame has fallen to RB106 in RotoBaller's dynasty rankings and is an easy drop candidate for managers looking to free up roster space around their leagues' rookie drafts
