Browns bump rookies Spencer Fano, Denzel Boston up to the first team

Browns rookie offensive tackle Spencer Fano got into a scuffle with defensive end Jared Verse at training camp on Saturday and it earned him something much better than a reprimand from head coach Todd Monken. Monken told reporters at a Monday press conference that Fano will now be the left tackle for the starting offense. Fano was a first-round pick, so he was always ticketed for the first team but Monken cited the way he handled himself against Verse as the final push he needed to move ahead of Dawand Jones. “We were already leaning that way, and Saturday solidified it. . . . You want to see the competition part; you want to see a guy not back down,” Monken said, via a transcript from the team. “If they don’t stand up for themselves, then you’re really concerned.” Fano isn’t the only rookie who got good news on Monday. Monken said that wide receiver Denzel Boston has also been bumped up to the first team. “He’s made a bunch of plays. I’ve seen it, you’ve seen it,” Monken said. “He’s made a bunch of plays. We want to move Jerry [Jeudy] around; I think Jerry is at his best when he’s on the move. He’s elite, he can separate. And I think Denzel has shown that when he’s in the boundary, and you [see] contested catches, a lot of our three-by-one stuff may go to there.” The Browns also drafted wide receiver KC Concepcion in the first round and all three rookies should wind up playing significant roles as the Browns try to put together a winner in Monken’s first season

Just before the Browns started training camp, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy found himself going viral on social media for something he didn’t do. A video showing Jeudy putting up four fingers was portrayed as him answering a question about who he thinks should be the team’s quarterback by favoring Deshaun Watson, but, as noted at the time, the video was clearly edited and Jeudy responded by writing that he doesn’t “speak on decisions that aren’t mine to make.” Jeudy addressed the video again at a Thursday press conference and said that whoever made the video edited out a section including his daughter. Jeudy said he held up the four fingers to answer a question during a livestream about how old his daughter is and that the video’s editing “made it into something” it wasn’t. “I’ve been in the league for seven years . At least five or six of those years, there’s always been a quarterback competition within those years,” Jeudy said. “I think I was mature enough, wise enough to not answer questions like that. For anyone to believe I would answer like that on social media is kinda wild. You gotta understand this is what we in and understand how everybody viewing the quarterback competition in this room, so every little thing’s going to try to turn it into that. . . . I don’t even answer quarterback questions in here, why would I answer quarterback questions on TikTok?” Jeudy said he spoke to Watson and Shedeur Sanders directly to tell them he wasn’t discussing their competition and that the entire episode reinforced his feeling that “nothing’s real” on social media. Browns Think Quinshon Judkins "Can Play All Three Downs"

Cleveland Browns running backs coach Duce Staley said that RB Quinshon Judkins has "worked his ass off" to come back from his dislocated ankle and fractured fibula in Week 16 of his rookie campaign in 2025, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. "The sky is the limit ... I think that Q can play all three downs," Staley added. The 22-year-old former second-rounder from Ohio State is an emerging young RB, and although his fantasy ceiling could be limited by Cleveland's offense (especially their QB situation), Judkins is becoming a more attractive RB2 candidate for fantasy managers for what could be lots of volume. In 14 starts in his first NFL season in 2025, Judkins averaged only 3.6 yards per carry to finish with 827 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 230 carries. He added 26 receptions for 171 yards on 36 targets in the passing game. Judkins' fantasy ceiling could be limited with Dylan Sampson serving as the Browns' top pass-catching back, but it's clear Judkins' arrow is pointing up. Jerry Jeudy denies taking sides in Browns QB battle after viral clip

Jerry Jeudy isn't taking sides, even if social media is trying to say otherwise. The Cleveland Browns receiver is not a fan of a viral video that appears to show him revealing his preference for the team's starting quarterback in 2026 . Jeudy was asked who should be the starter for Cleveland and flashed four fingers in the TikTok video. Many saw that as an indication of Jeudy leaning towards Deshaun Watson in the quarterback competition since he is No. 4. However, there is a cut in the video and the question is no longer on the screen when Jeudy holds up the four fingers. The receiver fired back on social media, criticizing the idea that he was taking a stand on that topic. "Yall just be lying so much for what??" Jeudy said first in a series of posts on X on July 26 . The receiver also replied to the viral post from ESPN Cleveland, pointing out that the video was edited. "Yall cut the clip perfectly for that narrative," Jeudy said . On Sunday, a video emerged that purported to show Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy stating his preference at quarterback. Jeudy has responded to the viral clip. First, it’s important to watch the video . There’s a skip. After the question appears on the screen regarding his choice at the position, the image jumps. After the edit, Jeudy flashes four fingers, which is being interpreted as Jeudy wanting Deshaun Watson to get the job over Shedeur Sanders. Here’s what Jeudy had to say, on Twitter: “I don’t speak on decisions that aren’t mine to make. I support my teammates/Brothers, I do my job, and control what I can control. Let’s stop creating narrative that aren’t there for likes and clicks. I bet this won’t go viral because it’s too positive/real for y’all.” Again, the video isn’t reliable. It skips before Jeudy holds up four fingers. He could have been answering any question. It’s impossible to conclude with any degree of certainty that he was answering the question of which quarterback he prefers. And he’s right. It’s not his decision to make. Why would he state a preference before training camp even opens? Jeudy needs to be ready to work with, and get targeted by, whoever wins the job

2025 Slot-Wide Stats for Defenses: Chargers Strength, Patriots Surprise Weakness

Get your copy today! Today, we’re finishing our look at slot versus wide splits by shifting things to the defensive side of the ball. We’ve already looked at wideouts , tight ends and running backs and quarterbacks , and now we’ll get to see who the best was at shutting them down. Defensive stats here are far less stable year-to-year than offensive stats. Matchups play a big part in determining these things; it’s a lot easier to cover a Jerry Jeudy type than it is to try to stop Puka Nacua . Cornerback stats also swing significantly from year-to-year. While better corners will have higher average coverage DVOA ratings than worse ones over the long term, even the best have years where the numbers don’t swing their way as performance is highly inconsistent from year to year. That means these numbers are a little less predictive for the 2026 season than some of the other splits are, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing interesting to pull out. We can see where teams were particularly strong or weak a year ago, and how they’ve worked to address those issues going forward. This year, the biggest gap between slot and wide performance belongs to your defending AFC Champion New England Patriots . A very solid eighth in the league covering slot receivers, that number fell to 30th on players split out wide last season, with a 25.0% DVOA that only topped the remedial units in Dallas and Tennessee . That’s a surprise, isn’t it? Christian Gonzalez , Carlton Davis III and Marcus Jones have a stellar reputation as a group; that was considered one of their strong points in the Super Bowl matchup against the Seahawks. It’s not Jones’ fault – he had only 33 targets out wide, and while they went quite poorly (70.4% coverage DVOA), he wasn’t there enough to move the needle. Nor is it really Gonzalez’s fault. While he only ranked 33rd in coverage DVOA because he ate a lot of targets for a No. 1 corner, he was first in success rate and fourth in yards per pass, and he comes out with a perfectly solid -6.9% DVOA specifically against wideouts. No, this is putting Davis on blast. His 21.1% coverage DVOA out wide was the 10th worst among players with at least 100 wide coverage snaps, the fifth worst among players with at least 300, and dead last among players with at least 400 snaps out wide. I’ll be honest, this surprised me as well – Davis isn’t someone I had mentally filed away as a liability or anything of that nature. Sure, he didn’t have any interceptions, but he also had career-low marks in yards per completion and yard per target allowed. But what he also had were 187 penalty yards, second most in the league, with a league-worst nine defensive pass interference calls against him, not to mention a smattering of holding flags. Some of that did come in the postseason, but he certainly wasn’t immune from that in the regular season, either. This was out of character for him. It was more penalty yardage than he was chalked up for in the previous three seasons combined. He’s always been an aggressive player, but that aggression too often led to penalty yards in 2025. He also did allow four touchdown receptions, which isn’t great when you’re not making any sort of big splashy plays. In fact, neither Davis nor Gonzalez had a single interception in wide coverage last year; the Patriots’ four interceptions there came from Jaylinn Hawkins or Robert Spillane . And then, of course, you have the thing that hit all Patriots advanced stats – the historically easy strength of schedule. The Patriots had the eighth-easiest defensive schedule since 1977 last year and that’s impacting the numbers here as well. Before adjusting for that, the Patriots splits out wide are bad, but not a disaster. Taking that into account, however, is what knocks them down to 30th. I suspect this gap won [... truncated ...]

Position Battles That Matter for Fantasy in Training Camp: QB/RB

By this time next week, all 32 NFL teams will have reported to training camp for the 2026 season. Camp content flooding the internet is a major indicator that fantasy football drafts are right around the corner. Before we start building championship rosters, it’s important to monitor training camp battles at each position for certain teams in order to get a grasp on the value of certain players. Let’s look at some key quarterback and running back training camp battles that are the most relevant for fantasy football purposes. Candidates: Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel Baker Mayfield in 2020 is the last time the Browns have had one quarterback start every game in a single season. Aside from Mayfield, Cleveland has had 12 different quarterbacks start at least one game over the last five seasons. That includes Deshaun Watson , Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel , all of whom will compete for the starting job in 2026, as well. New head coach Todd Monken did preview this training camp battle during OTAs stating that the Browns had “two starting-level quarterbacks,” referring to Watson and Sanders. To be blunt, it’s difficult to get excited about either of the two and, as a result, any of the pass catchers in Cleveland. Watson is returning from two Achilles tears in October 2024 and January 2025. Sanders started seven games last season, averaging just 193.2 passing yards per game. The Browns did draft KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston with the 24 th and 39 th picks, respectively, but Jerry Jeudy did draw 106 targets last season and, as of now, is still on the team. Harold Fannin Jr. had one of the greatest rookie seasons ever for a tight end, recording a 72/731/6 receiving line on 107 targets. He is probably the safest pick regardless of which quarterback is out there for the Browns. Fannin no longer has to compete with David Njoku for snaps. He also averaged 13.5 PPR points per game with Sanders at quarterback, compared to 10.5 points per game with a combination of Gabriel and Joe Flacco . Candidates: Fernando Mendoza, Kirk Cousins Las Vegas has a new face of the franchise in quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, they signed veteran Kirk Cousins just a few weeks before selecting Mendoza. This is significant especially in consideration to minority owner Tom Brady ’s opinion on rookie quarterbacks. He’s on record back in 2024 expressing his thoughts that it’s “a tragedy that we’re forcing these rookies to play early.” There’s really no reason for Mendoza to take the field as a rookie. Las Vegas is still a work in progress in regard to legitimately competing with the Chiefs, Chargers and Broncos in the AFC West. The Raiders also don’t have much beyond Brock Bowers in the passing game. Tre Tucker , Jalen Nailor and Jack Bech top the depth chart at wide receiver. So, while there is still an opportunity at a training camp battle between Mendoza and Cousins, it’s likely the latter who is out there in Week 1. Based on what we saw now Vegas head coach, but then Seattle offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, do with the Seahawks’ offense last season, Bowers and Ashton Jeanty are still priority picks for fantasy football even if Cousins starts the entirety of the season. Falcons candidates: Tua Tagovailoa, Michael Penix Jr. Vikings candidates: Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy Tua Tagovailoa is owed $54 million in guaranteed money this season. However, the Miami Dolphins are on the hook for just over $52 million of it following his release. Meanwhile, the Falcons, who signed Tua to a one-year deal, paid just $1.215 million to do so. It’s a bargain for a team in desperate need of someone to support a star-studded group of offensive playmakers that includes Bijan Robinson , Drake London and Kyle Pitts Sr. While there may appear to be a training camp battle between Tua and Michael Penix Jr., it’s hard to imagine Penix as the Week 1 starter after tearing his ACL last November; the third of [... truncated ...]

Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are set to continue their competition to become Cleveland’s QB1 at training camp later this month. But before that, the two recently were down in South Florida training with some of the club’s skill players to prepare. At his youth football camp over the weekend, Sanders said that’s part of the attitude they want to put forth in the competition — they are willing to put everything aside to come together as a team. “I would say it’s the same thing that we’ve been saying from Day 1,” Sanders said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “ We’re both trying to be the best version of ourselves we could be . So we’re not going to let anything get in between of that. So it’s a level of respect that we all in the quarterback room have for each other. “And we’re not really emotional when it comes to things that we can’t control. We mainly focus on and thrive on getting better in the work every day. So if I like something he’s doing, I ask. If he likes something I do, then [he] asks. It’s conversation, and that’s what’s most effective.” Cabot noted that Cleveland’s top receivers Jerry Jeudy, Isaiah Bond, Cedric Tillman, KC Concepcion, and Denzel Boston were among the attendees at the workouts in Miami. “I think it was extremely important that us as a group, for whoever was available, was available to come down to Miami,” Sanders said. “And there were a couple other players that schedules didn’t align with it, but it’s all good for those that came and stuff.
