The Panthers have added a running back to their 53-man roster
The Panthers have added a running back to their 53-man roster. Carolina announced the club has signed Anthony Tyus off of its practice squad. Tyus, 23, has been with Carolina since last season, mainly on the team’s practice squad. He’s appeared in three games so far this season, averaging 25.4 yards on five kick returns. Additionally, the Panthers have opened the 21-day practice window for linebacker Bam Martin-Scott, who is currently on injured reserve
Panthers offensive tackle Taylor Moton is set to make his 2026 debut. Moton returned to practice this week after missing all of training camp and the first weeks of the regular season while recovering from blood clots in his lung. The Panthers announced that he has been activated from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday. Moton could be back at his familiar right tackle spot against the Eagles. First-round pick Monroe Freeling has been manning the spot, but he is doubtful to play due to a knee injury. The Panthers also activated defensive lineman Turk Wharton and running back Trevor Etienne from injured reserve. They elevated running back Anthony Tyus and cornerback Robert Rochell from the practice squad to round out the day’s moves
Carolina Panthers running back AJ Dillon (foot/ankle) walked into his team's locker room on Monday wearing a walking boot on his right foot, according to ESPN's Mike Kaye. Dillon has played a limited role in the Carolina backfield so far this season, recording 43 rushing yards on 17 carries across four games. However, the 28-year-old currently profiles as the Panthers RB2 behind Chuba Hubbard while fellow Carolina back Jonathon Brooks (abdomen/groin) remains on Injured Reserve. If Dillon is forced to miss time, unproven back Anthony Tyus III would be the lone healthy back remaining behind Hubbard on Carolina's active roster. Hubbard has already dominated backfield touches for the Panthers this season and been productive, recording 390 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns through four games. Without any competition for him in Carolina, Hubbard profiles as a must-start running back for fantasy managers
Panthers place starting CBs Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on IR, sign receiver David Moore and running back Tre Tyus
Linebacker Claudin Cherelus will miss at least four Panthers games due to the shoulder injury he suffered in Week 2. Cherelus was ruled out for this week on Friday and he was placed on injured reserve Saturday. He had one tackle while playing 36 special teams snaps in the first two weeks of the season. The Panthers filled the opening on their roster by signing linebacker Maema Njongmeta off of their practice squad. He had 10 tackles in 15 games for the Panthers last season. The Panthers also elevated wide receiver Chris Moore and running back Anthony Tyus for Sunday’s game against the Browns. Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette are both listed as questionable at receiver while Tyus will help fill the void left by Jonathon Brooks’s move to injured reserve this week
Panthers waive Chandler Zavala, sign 10 players to practice squad
The Panthers have set their initial 53-player roster. They announced they waived cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson, cornerback Cam Miller, safety Demani Richardson, outside linebacker Isaiah Smith, linebacker Maz Mwansa, defensive tackle Parker Petersen, offensive lineman Isaia Glass, cornerback Devonta Smith, linebacker Maema Njongmeta, center Nick Samac, running back Tre Tyus, cornerback Corey Thornton, wide receiver Casey Washington, wide receiver Ja’seem Reed, linebacker Trevin Wallace and defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte. The Panthers also released 10 vested veterans, terminating the contracts of wide receiver David Moore, defensive tackle Elijah Garcia, offensive lineman Jake Curhan, cornerback Robert Rochell, safety Isaiah Simmons, outside linebacker Cam Gill, offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter, quarterback Kyle Trask, tight end James Mitchell and outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon. Running back Trevor Etienne and linebacker Bam Martin-Scott went on injured reserve with designations to return. Cornerback Tyrek Funderburk was waived with an injury designation. The team also placed right tackle Taylor Moton on the reserve/non-football illness list, and left tackle Ikem Ekwonu and defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton on reserve/physically unable to perform list. The Panthers traded a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Chargers for defensive tackle TeRah Edwards. With those moves, the Panthers are at the 53-man limit, and can establish a practice squad on Monday
The Panthers plan on playing their starters in their second preseason game, but they’ll be without one member of the offense against the Bills on Saturday. Running back Chuba Hubbard did not practice on Thursday and head coach Dave Canales said, via multiple reporters, that he is dealing with a hamstring injury. Hubbard is considered week-to-week after having an MRI and that the team is confident he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season. Canales said earlier this week that the team was planning to have Jonathon Brooks split time with Hubbard on Saturday, but the injury should mean that Brooks takes on a bigger role in his first-ever preseason action. Brooks missed the 2024 preseason while recovering from a torn ACL and then missed all of last season after tearing it again in Week 14 of his rookie season. Trevor Etienne, AJ Dillon, Anthony Tyus, and Miles Davis are the other Panthers running backs
