Patrick Mahomes shockingly set to be ‘fully cleared’ seven months after tearing ACL
Chiefs fans will likely have their two-time MVP quarterback return sooner rather than later. Patrick Mahomes is expected to be “fully cleared” this week, per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer . Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in Week 15 and underwent surgery on Dec. 15. Mahomes was a full participant at Chiefs OTAs in May in both individuals and 7-on-7s, donning a yellow non-contact jersey. During Phase III, the team kept him out of 11-on-11 drills as a precaution. Mahomes also took part in mandatory minicamp, putting him on track to be ready for camp in July and August. Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies will report to training camp three days earlier than the rest of the team, so Mahomes will be back at Kansas City ’s facility in St. Joseph, Mo., on Friday. However, Mahomes will have to face defenders for the first time on the surgically repaired knee. Breer also noted the toughness of Kansas City’s offseason programs, noting that Mahomes has previously played in preseason games. During training camp, the Chiefs will also see action under center from Justin Fields , Chris Oladokun and rookie Garrett Nussmeier . It remains to be seen whether Mahomes will generally split time early in camp, and how the team will handle his reps in the preseason

Garrett Nussmeier has Late-Round Dynasty Value
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has decent long-term upside as a potential handcuff option for Patrick Mahomes' fantasy managers. Mahomes is currently recovering from a torn ACL, so Justin Fields is expected to start Week 1. Nussmeier might be able to jump Fields on the depth chart, but more than likely, he'll be the primary backup until Mahomes returns. The LSU product was projected to be a mid-round pick, but fell to the Chiefs in the seventh round. Nussmeier didn't look great during his senior year, but threw for over 4,000 yards in 2024. Mahomes will eventually take his starting gig back, but who knows what kind of toll that torn ACL will take on his body long-term. Nussmeier isn't a bad stash option, given he could be one injury away from the starting job

Saints sign former Jets LB Jackson Sirmon
The New Orleans Saints have signed former New York Jets linebacker Jackson Sirmon. The 26-year-old defender appeared in just one game in 2025 while spending the rest of his time as a member of the practice squad, but is hoping a fresh start in the Big Easy will be just what he needs to hit the field more. Sirmon signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. He came out of the University of California and spent two seasons with the Golden Bears after spending time with the Washington Huskies. Before suffering a season-ending injury during his senior season, Sirmon managed an impressive 300+ tackle collegiate career while adding four and a half sacks, two interceptions, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. While this signing may not be the flashiest of moves the Saints have made this offseason, I am certain that Sirmon and his positional coach are thrilled with the pairing- after all, the New Orleans Saints’ LB coach is Peter Sirmon, Jackson’s father. Although many across the league and within the organization speculated whether the Saints would take a flyer on QB Garrett Nussmeier in this year’s NFL Draft, as his father, Doug, is also a member of the team’s coaching staff, that match ultimately never came to fruition with the LSU product going to the Kansas City Chiefs instead. The Chiefs selected Nussmeier in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 249th overall. There was a fair amount of mainstream media hype for Nussmeier to go on Day 2 of the draft, so for him to fall into the late seventh makes him a harmless, all-upside pick for the Chiefs. The Chiefs of course hope Nussmeier won't need to see the field, but all it might take is a good start or two to make Nussmeier a fought-over trade target a few years from now. In the meantime, the Chiefs will be happy if Nussmeier can merely stick on the roster as a backup -- an outcome that was taken as a foregone conclusion by most draft observers as recently as the morning before the Chiefs picked him. Nussmeier (6-foot-2, 203 pounds) is smallish and struggled a concerning amount during his LSU career, including in his most recent season. Nussmeier's completion percentage was poor in his first four years -- 64.2 as a fourth-year player was his career high to that point -- and then in 2025 Nussmeier's YPA dropped to 6.7 yards. This is probably another Quinn Ewers sort of scenario

Chiefs Draft Garrett Nussmeier With 249th Overall Pick
The Kansas City Chiefs have selected LSU quarterback prospect Garrett Nussmeier with the 249th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Nussmeier was widely projected as a Day 2 pick throughout the offseason, so to see him still on the board within the final 10 selections was quite surprising. He racked up 4,052 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2024, but his statistics regressed in 2025 as he was limited to just nine games. In addition to the stats, part of the reason for his late selection was a medical concern that emerged in the pre-draft process, as Nussmeier was diagnosed with a spinal cyst pressing on a nerve.
