Panthers TE Darren Waller practiced on Monday. Waller was seen catching passes from Bryce Young. It is unclear if he will play in Week 1 after signing with Carolina late in training camp
Carolina Panthers tight end Darren Waller walked into practice on Monday with a helmet and uniform, according to Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer. Per The Associated Press' Steve Reed, Waller added on Monday that he is practicing as if he will make his Panthers debut in Week 1 on Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Chicago Bears. The Panthers have eased the 33-year-old veteran into the fold as he continues to work his way into playing shape in 2026. When asked how Waller has looked, head coach Dave Canales said, "Big and fast." The former sixth-rounder by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015 from Georgia Tech really took off after joining the Raiders, posting back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020 with 197 receptions, 2,341 yards, and 12 touchdowns in 32 games played. After retiring in 2024, Waller resurfaced to join the Miami Dolphins last year, posting a 24-283-6 line on 34 targets in only nine games played. Durability is a major concern, but when healthy and active, Waller is expected to be the top pass-catching TE for quarterback Bryce Young, potentially giving him some early-season waiver-wire appeal if he produces. Waller, who signed with the Panthers on Aug. 12, took part in team drills with the first-team offense Wednesday as the coaching staff looks to get him fully incorporated ahead of Week 1, Kassidy Hill of the team's official site reports. The veteran tight end has the potential to give Bryce Young the best pass-catching option at the position the 2023 first overall pick has had in his career, but Waller is still in the midst of learning head coach Dave Canales' offensive system. Canales had good things to say about Waller's progress Wednesday, saying he'd gotten in plenty of routes versus air and looked fast while doing so. Waller suited up for only nine regular-season games with the Dolphins in 2025 after a year in retirement, but he recorded 24 receptions for 283 yards and six touchdowns on 34 targets in that span

Darren Waller, 33, was observed lining up in the slot with the Carolina Panthers' first-team offense during training camp. Despite durability concerns and a limited nine-game season last year, Waller showed 'real burst' and is expected to be the top tight end option over Ja'Tavion Sanders, potentially impacting Sanders' roster spot. Waller's past success includes two 1,000-yard seasons with the Raiders, but his current fantasy value is seen as a sleeper pick

Coach Dave Canales indicated that Waller is not expected to suit up for Friday's preseason finale against the Texans, Anthony Rizzuti of USA Today reports. Waller, who officially signed with the Panthers last Monday, didn't take part in the team's joint practice with the Jaguars on Wednesday and sat out Friday's ensuing preseason contest against the Jaguars. The tight end did see a couple of team reps in Monday's session, per Canales, but with the Panthers still easing Waller into the mix, it remains to be seen how much of a workload he'll see out of the gate this season

Waller won't play in Friday's preseason contest at Jacksonville, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports. Waller officially signed with the Panthers on Monday, at which time coach Dave Canales told Mike Kaye of ESPN.com that the tight end wasn't likely to practice fully at Wednesday's joint session with the Jaguars. Carolina thus is easing the 33-year-old into the mix with his new squad, but once Waller is up to speed he'll join Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans and Ja'Tavion Sanders as the players at the position available to QB Bryce Young
