Tank Bigsby to be Eagles Clear No. 2 Running Back?
The Philadelphia Eagles acquired running back Tank Bigsby from the Jacksonville Jaguars early in the 2025 season, and he went on to carry the ball 58 times for 344 yards (career-high 5.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns in 16 games (one start), adding three catches for 32 yards. Saquon Barkley remains the centerpiece for new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, but he needs a complementary weapon in the backfield, and that's were Bigsby comes in. The 24-year-old former third-rounder in 2023 out of Auburn is a physical, explosive RB who can give Barkley a breather while also helping Philly's ground attack remain strong as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 campaign. If Bigsby can maintain his efficiency and explosive ability in a new-look Eagles offense, he could be the most valuable handcuff in fantasy circles in 2026. He probably won't become a fixture on offense as long as Barkley stays healthy, but he should be clearly ahead of Will Shipley, Dameon Pierce, and Elijah Mitchell in the Eagles' RB room. Eagles OTA observations: The 1st practice since A.J. Brown trade originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia The Eagles took the field on Tuesday afternoon for the first time since the trade of A.J. Brown to the Patriots. Meanwhile, Brown was on the field in Foxborough, Massachusetts, at the very same time. In Philly, all eyes were on DeVonta Smith on Tuesday as he assumes the top receiver role. The Eagles will wrap up their OTAs with a final practice on Thursday before holding a mandatory minicamp next Tuesday and Wednesday. They will then head their separate ways for a long break before training camp in late July. Here are some notes from Tuesday’s practice: 1. As a reminder, these OTAs are completely voluntary. The Eagles have had pretty good attendance this spring but several players were not there on Monday: OT Lane Johnson , DT Jalen Carter , OT Fred Johnson , OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka , OL Hollin Pierce . Johnson and Carter also missed last week’s practice that was open to reporters. Several players were in attendance but were not practicing: WR Makai Lemon, LB Jihaad Campbell , WR Britain Covey , RB Carson Steele , DB Tucker Large. Lemon had a compression sleeve on his right leg. After practice, Quinyon Mitchell revealed that Lemon has a hamstring injury. It’s not ideal for the first-round pick to miss time but there’s a long way to go before training camp. Campbell continues to recover from a shoulder injury and has not participated all spring. But unlike last Wednesday, Campbell was at practice this time. Early on Tuesday, the Eagles signed veteran running back Elijah Mitchell . He was practicing in a No. 38 jersey. 2. Some offensive depth chart notes: • The Eagles have been rotating Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee with the second-team offense, but Dalton was the QB2 again on Tuesday and had a better performance than he did last Wednesday with reporters in attendance. • Without Makai Lemon, the Eagles mixed in plenty of wideouts with the first unit along with DeVonta Smith. Guys like Dontayvion Wicks , Johnny Wilson and Hollywood Brown all got some run. • The offensive line groupings: First team (L to R): Jordan Mailata , Landon Dickerson , Cam Jurgens , Tyler Steen , Markel Bell Second team (L to R): John Ojukwu , Myles Hinton , Willie Lampkin , Jake Majors , Cameron Williams Third team: (L to R): John Ojukwu, Jaeden Roberts , WIllie Lampkin, Micah Morris, Cameron Williams 3. Some defensive depth chart notes: • In the Eagles’ base package, the Eagles again went with Drew Mukuba and Cooper DeJean before mixing in Marcus Epps when they went to nickel. Epps has been the guy with the ones so far. While Vic Fangio said that job is open, it’s looking more like it’s Epps’ job to lose. • Michael Carter II was the extra defender when the Eagles went to their dime package. • Without Campbell, Zack Baun and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. began the day as the starting linebackers. Smael Mondon Jr. eventually got some first-team linebacker reps next to Baun as well. 4. After individual drills and a tackling circuit, 7-on-7s began with a Jalen Hurts interception to Jeremiah Trotter Jr. The pass went directly to Trotter, who dropped into zone coverage and picked him off. This is the second offseason he’s getting a ton of valuable first-team reps. 5. The offensive highlight of the day came on a deep ball from Hurts to Saquon Barkley , who was able to sneak behind Zack Baun on a 3rd-and-6. It looked like a coverage bust. Get ready for a bunch of talk this offseason about how the Eagles might finally throw to their running backs more in 2026. 6. In the two practices that have been open to reporters this spring, Riq Woolen has been very impressive and has seemingly been turning heads among his teammates too. The 6-foot-4 cornerback looked sticky in coverage on Tuesday on a deep ball down the sideline to Hollywood Brown. He also had a pass breakup in the end zone during a red zone drill. Eagles sign veteran running back ahead of OTA practice originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia The Eagles on Tuesday morning signed veteran running back Elijah Mitchell , who will presumably be on the field this afternoon for an OTA practice. Mitchell, 28, was at the Jefferson Health Training Complex earlier this spring on a tryout during rookie minicamp. The Eagles also had Khalil Herbert at rookie camp but Mitchell must have impressed more. Mitchell (5-10, 200) was a sixth-round pick out of Louisiana back in 2021. He was drafted by the 49ers and spent his first four years in San Francisco . His best season came as a rookie in 2021, when he had 963 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on 207 attempts in just 11 games. He also caught 19 passes for 137 yards and another touchdown that season. The next season, Mitchell missed some time with a knee injury and played just five games in 2022 but still averaged 6.2 yards per attempt. In 2023, Mitchell played in 11 games but had just 281 rushing yards. Mitchell missed his entire 2024 season after suffering a hamstring injury in August. Last season, Mitchell was with the Chiefs and Patriots but played in just one game. After injury, free-agent exit, Dre Greenlaw has healthy appreciation for 49ers in return (paywall) “ Greenlaw said it wasn’t until midway through the 2025 season that he “adjusted to the normal” post-Achilles surgery: “I kind of felt like I could go and practice and I could warm up and I could do everything, and I ain’t got to worry about no pain, no nothing, I ain’t got to worry about what shoes I got on. All that kind of stuff. So probably about last year is when I first felt like for at least a week or two or multiple days in a row that I felt like, all right, I’m good to go now.” He walked into the auditorium at Levi’s Stadium, his playground for six seasons and counting, with a football tucked like a stuffed toy and fiddled with it as he fielded questions. At one point he flipped the ball from one hand to the other, displacing the black foam covering from the podium microphone. For someone who had been released from a multi-year deal less than a few months ago, Greenlaw, relegated to a one-year contract at age 29, wore a face of relief rather than one of scorn. “I ain’t got to do nothing more than what I normally do, and that’s just play football,” Greenlaw said. “I’ve never been a talkative guy, a loud guy that’s doing all this. That’s Fred’s job. I just repeat whatever he say. That’s never really been my role. The San Francisco 49ers take the field this week for Phase 3 of the offseason program. The closer we get to summer, the closer we get to real football. It’s spring, which means we’ll need to settle for OTAs There’s generally a 10-practice schedule over a three-week period, which kicked off on Wednesday. Practice is open to the media on Thursday, so we’ll get our first glimpse at the rookie class and free agents. Here are five things we’ll be watching for. I remember in 2021, after the 49ers drafted two running backs. Trey Sermon could get the first crack at it. There wasn’t anything that stood out when Sermon touched the ball. Then, this jacked, undersized, speedy runner wearing No. 49 subbed in with the 3s. That looked different. It didn’t take long for the 49ers to realize Elijah Mitchell was a better football player than Sermon. By training camp, Mitchell had the upper hand. Last year, they cycled through three left guards. In an effort to ensure that doesn’t happen again in 2026, the 49ers signed Robert Jones and Brett Toth and drafted Carver Willis. Those moves suggest the team wants a veteran to win the job, but is content if it ends up like Dominick Puni ’s rookie season, where the first-year player wins the job. Don’t be shocked if Willis is working multiple positions early on to see where he fits best. He may be the long-term option at center after Jake Brendel ’s contract expires . We know Willis won’t play the position he played in college. That could lead to a bit of a learning curve, giving the veterans ahead of him a better shot to start. If healthy, the player who has played the highest level for a full season is Jones. If Jones can recapture his 2024 form, the 49ers will have their best offensive line, arguably ever, under the current regime. That might speak more to how volatile the play at left guard has been in recent seasons. Mike Evans has primarily lined up out wide throughout his career. Last year with Tampa Bay, 165 of Evans’ routes came out wide while 62 were in the slot. That’s par for the course. I doubt that’ll be the case with Kyle Shanahan. Let’s use Demarcus Robinson ’s 2025 as an example. He had 152 routes out wide compared to 100 in the slot, and even eight from a “tight” alignment. The data tells us that Shanahan wants his bigger wideouts closer to the line of scrimmage. Ricky Pearsall ran 209 routes out wide last season, but only 50 in the slot. Then again, he had 19 “tight” routes. I’d imagine Evans and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling will be featured closer to the line of scrimmage in “nasty” splits, which is a yard or two away from the offensive tackle. That’s for run-game purposes, but it also puts them in a position where they can’t get jammed off the line of scrimmage and will more than likely face a linebacker or safety in coverage. If I’m an undrafted rookie safety, I’m champing at the bit to show what I can do. The safety play last season for the 49ers left a lot to be desired. While it’s fair to say they needed to defend longer than usual without a hint of a pass rush, whichever safety was on the field was consistently out of phase in coverage. Jalen Stroman and Larry Worth are on opposite ends of the athletic spectrum. Maybe Jakob Robinson gets a crack at safety. If one of these y [... truncated ...]

After missing all of 2024 while recovering from hamstring surgery, Mitchell landed in Kansas City last season but failed to win a prominent role, appearing in just one regular-season game and seeing only seven snaps on offense. The speed he displayed in college at Louisiana doesn't appear to have survived the many injuries that have plagued him in the NFL since he was a sixth-round pick in 2021, and he got a brief look from the Patriots this offseason before being cut loose after the draft. Mitchell could get another look from a team looking for a possible big-play threat in the backfield, but it's also possible his career is over
