Jalin Hyatt’s decision, voluntary or otherwise, to surrender No. 13 to Odell Beckham Jr. wasn’t the only back-to-the-future move when it comes to Giants receiver numbers. Rookie Malachi Fields shed No. 0, which he had worn during the preseason, for No. 88. And that got Giants fans thinking immediately about former Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks. A first-round pick in 2009, Nicks spent five years with the Giants, one with the Colts, and a final season with the Giants. He was a member of the Super Bowl XLVI championship team, catching 10 passes for 109 yards in the victory over the Patriots. But Nicks’s number isn’t the only one making a comeback. Hyatt picked No. 81 after giving up No. 13. That number was worn by Amani Toomer from 1996 through 2008. He was a member of the Super Bowl XLI-winning team, catching six passes for 84 yards in the victory over the Patriots. Before 2004, receivers typically wore numbers from 80 to 89. In 2004, 10 through 19 were added to the mix. Nowadays, they can also wear single-digit numbers

Giants waive WR Jalin Hyatt among moves to get to 53 players
Odell Beckham Jr. has made the Giants’ initial 53-man roster and his No. 13 jersey is now available. Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt was among the cuts that the Giants made to get down to the roster limit. Hyatt was a 2023 third-round pick, but he only caught 36 passes over his first three NFL seasons. The Giants also waived or released quarterbacks Brandon Allen and Jake Haener; wide receivers Braxton Berrios, Dalen Cambre, Xavier Gipson, Isaiah Hodgins, and Kobe Prentice; defensive linemen Anquin Barnes, Ben Barten, Marlon Davidson, Leki Fotu, Josh Topou, and Zacch Pickens; linebackers Trace Ford, Khalid Kareem, Chandler Martin, Darius Muasau, Caleb Murphy, and Anfernee Orji; defensive backs Ugo Amadi, Beau Brade, Art Green, Raheem Layne, and J.T. Giants list Odell Beckham Jr. as third-string WR on initial depth chart
The Giants released their first depth chart of the summer on Wednesday and it provides a view of how Odell Beckham Jr.'s bid to make the team is shaping up. Beckham is listed on the third string along with three other wideouts. Reports from camp last week had Beckham, who did not play at all in 2025, getting reps with the first team, but it will be hard for a player who doesn’t play on special teams to make the cut from his current spot on the depth chart. Darius Slayton is listed as a starter along with Malik Nabers with Calvin Austin, Darnell Mooney and Jalin Hyatt on the second rung. Hyatt’s placement is a bit surprising based on how reports from camp about how the receiver reps are doled out. Isaiah Hodgins, Dalen Cambre, and rookie Malachi Fields join Beckham on the third string with JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios on the fourth row. Berrios is also listed as the top punt returner. Teams stress the unofficial nature of these depth charts, so the way they line up in preseason games may prove to be more telling about how things will play out for the Giants. Giants 2026 Make or Break: Is this Darius Slayton's last season in New York?
Giants training camp is here, with new head coach John Harbaugh taking the team to The Greenbrier in West Virginia. This will be a "make or break season" for certain Giants, meaning they'll need to step up and show they belong, or else they could be wearing another team's uniform in 2027. We’ll highlight some of those players for Big Blue, continuing with wide receiver Darius Slayton . - 37 catches - 538 yards - 1 touchdown Slayton has played seven seasons in New York. He's gone over the 700-yard mark four times, so he's proven he can step up when needed. But he's coming off of two sub-600-yard seasons, and the timing off those down years isn't great. While Slayton still has two years left on the three-year, $36 million contract he signed a year ago, there is a potential out in the contract after this season that would only cost the Giants $3 million in dead cap money. The Giants also drafted Malachi Fields and signed veterans Odell Beckham Jr. , Juju Smith-Schuster , Darnell Mooney , and Calvin Austin this offseason, and if one of those players proves they can step up and be a starter, it would hurt Slayton's chances of sticking around. There's also Jalin Hyatt , who has been a bust in his first three seasons with the team but possesses a similar skillset to Slayton, which could push him during training camp and make the veteran expendable. Slayton comes into training camp as the likely No. 2 receiver behind Malik Nabers , with Mooney set to occupy the slot. But those veterans mentioned above, and Fields, will be hot on his heels. Beckham, of course, is a fan favorite, and while he clearly won't be the same playmaker he was in his first go-round with the Giants, fans are going to want to see him play. Any time he makes a play, the pressure will further be put on Slayton to go out and prove that he should still be on the field. Drops have been a problem for Slayton over the course of his career. Last season alone, Slayton dropped five passes on just 63 targets, which is far too many for any receiver. He'll need to be much more consistent with his hands to keep his status as a starter in 2026. What Slayton's been able to hang his hat on during his NFL career is his ability to be a deep threat. He's averaged more than 14.0 yards per catch in each of the past four seasons, and if he can be a true stretch-the-field-threat in 2026, he's be a perfect complement to Nabers and Mooney. The Giants aren't asking the world of Slayton for this upcoming season. They don't need him to be a 1,000-yard receiver or really anything close to that. But they need him to be consistent when the ball comes his way. If he can avoid the costly drops that have plagued him and be the down-field stretch the Giants need him to be, then he'll likely be back in 2027

The Giants lost Gunner Olszewski to a torn Achilles in practice last week and Harbaugh called that “a catalyst,” but said that Malik Nabers’s ongoing recovery from last season’s torn ACL was not part of the equation. “No, I’d say it’s separate from that. Nothing to do with that,” Harbaugh said, via a transcript from the team. “There’s room enough for Malik and whoever the next four or five receivers are. There’s room enough for all those guys.” Darius Slayton, Calvin Austin, Darnell Mooney, Isaiah Hodgins, Jalin Hyatt, and third-round pick Malachi Fields are also in the mix at receiver for the Giants, so there won’t be room for all of them when it comes time for the Giants to make decisions about their 53-man roster.
