John Harbaugh on releasing OBJ: 'It just wasn't working for us'
On Tuesday, the Giants released receiver Odell Beckham Jr. On Wednesday, Giants coach Jack Harbaugh addressed the decision to pull the plug on OBJ 2.0. “I had, you know, a great conversation with Odell, and, you know, it’s tough,” Harbaugh told reporters. “But we just weren’t getting enough, you know? It just wasn’t working for us . And like I told him, I wanted to be able to get more. I wanted him to be able to do more. I wanted to get him on the field more. We just, whatever reason, we weren’t able to do it. Put it on us. We weren’t able to get it done. But at this point in time, that’s kind of where we were. And we needed to move on.” Harbaugh was reminded of last week’s comments regarding the possibility of Beckham getting more chances in the offense. “Well, I think I said I hoped he would get more chances,” Harbaugh said, “That’s what I said. So nothing changed. I did hope he would get more chances. And he didn’t. You know, and that’s where we stood. So I felt like, that being the case, we’re not gonna be able to get it done. Roster spot-wise, we need more out of that spot, and that’s what we’re gonna do. Nothing about Odell. Nothing that he could do, in that sense. It’s just we weren’t able to get it done, make it fit, make it work, whatever you want to call it. And I was hoping we could, and we didn’t.” (And, yes, Harbaugh did say he hoped it would happen on Sunday.) The problem is that Beckham was too deep on the depth chart to not play special teams. They needed someone who, when only getting limited snaps on offense, could do more in the third phase — like Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones will. The injuries made it necessary to tweak the roster to ensure that the guys at the back end were able to contribute, in some fashion. Through three games, OBJ had become forgotten. And it’s unlikely he’ll return. His number, 13, already has been re-issued to quarterback Jake Haener, whose prior number (18) was claimed by new backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy

With Odell Beckham Jr. on his way out , another Giants receiver is on his way up. New York is signing Braxton Berrios to its 53-man roster, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Berrios has served as the team’s returner for the season’s first three weeks while on the practice squad. Out of elevations, the team had to sign him to the active roster for him to continue in that role. Berrios has averaged 6.0 yards per punt return and 27.6 yards per kick return on the young season. He’s appeared in 94 games with six starts in eight seasons for the Jets, Dolphins, Texans, and Giants. Berrios has caught 140 passes for 1,360 yards with six touchdowns

The New York Giants are releasing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. , per NFL Media . The news comes on the heels of the Giants' 12-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, where Beckham played just six offensive snaps and saw one target. He leaves New York for the second time in his career, having played a total of 20 offensive snaps in three games with zero catches this season. OBJ, who was selected by New York with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, ranks second in franchise history behind Amani Toomer in receiving yards with 5,476. He also ranks fourth in receiving touchdowns with 44. His return to the Giants was one of the more fun and nostalgic storylines of the offseason, but he found himself low on the depth chart behind Malik Nabers , Darnell Mooney and Malachi Fields . Fans wanted to see more of him, though. Odell Beckham Jr. was on the field for three plays on Monday night
The first real sighting of Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Monday night happened when ESPN cameras captured him giving his former head coach, Sean McVay, a post-game hug. During the game, OBJ made even less of a cameo appearance. Beckham was on the field for only three snaps. Out of 58 total offensive plays. By way of comparison, Malachi Fields had 47 snaps. Malik Nabers played 43. Darnell Mooney was on the field for 42. Even Braxton Berrios — primarily a special-teamer — had five offensive snaps. Making the lack of involvement from Beckham more surprising is the fact that starting quarterback Jaxson Dart made an early exit with a knee injury. Beckham and backup quarterback Jameis Winston have a strong rapport, and Winston struggled in relief of Dart, completing 11 of 27 throws. Why not give Beckham and Winston a chance to connect? The other question is whether Beckham has frustrations regarding his lack of involvement. Yes, he’s apparently happy to simply be back in the NFL after a year out of football. But, with only three snaps in a prime-time game, is he really back? In Week 1, Beckham was on the field for 11 of 69 snaps. He has been targeted zero times, through two games. From the Giants’ perspective, it’s fair to wonder whether a game-day roster spot is being wasted on someone who isn’t contributing to the cause. As MDS points out, the Giants have receiver Dalen Cambre on the practice squad. He was second in the NCAA in special-teams tackles as a senior, and he blocked two punts at the college level. Yes, the Giants bringing Beckham back to Big Blue is a good story. The fans love him. But the early-season trends aren’t encouraging. At some point, they’re going to need his roster spot. Especially if they don’t put Dart on IR and add another quarterback (other than Berrios) to serve as the backup to Winston
