Fantasy Football Sleepers, Busts & Predictions: 2026 Houston Texans
In C.J. Stroud ’s first ever postseason game, he passed for 3 touchdowns against 0 interceptions in a 45-14 beatdown of the Browns. His passer rating was 157.2. In five games since, he has 3 touchdowns against 6 interceptions. His passer rating is 70.1, and the Texans have gone 2-3, and their two wins have come when Justin Herbert fell apart at the seams in 2024 and when the Steelers offense might as well have not shown up last postseason. Stroud’s falloff in the regular season has gotten the headline, but it’s really the postseason where his struggles have been the starkest. The Texans haven’t scored more than 16 points in any of their three playoff losses. Stroud’s future — in Houston or elsewhere — will be one of the biggest topics of the NFL season. There’s a path for the Texans to get back to the playoffs even if he is more the version of him from 2024-2025 than the looked-like-a-star rookie of 2023 (source: they made the playoffs in 2024-2025), but if he can’t look like a star in the postseason, the Texans have less than zero shot at a Super Bowl. Dalton Schultz has had one very key attribute for his six-year run as a relevant fantasy tight end: Exclusivity. The most targets earned by a tight end on a Dalton Schultz team in the last six years who wasn’t Schultz was 22, by Jake Ferguson in 2022 and Cade Stover in 2024. There just hasn’t been target competition for Schultz. Klein also might not be that either. After all, he only had 38 receptions in four years of college, peaking with 248 yards and a touchdown last year at Michigan. But he enters the NFL as a known quantity as a blocker, and blocking is something Schultz isn’t any great shakes at. That’s definitely why the Texans drafted Klein in the second round ahead of guys like Max Klare and Oscar Delp . And if he can establish himself as a blocker, especially on a team that needs blocking help, that’s a path to playing time, which is half the battle. I’m reminded of Will Dissly , who had 25 receptions for 336 yards in his college career and then 105 yards in his very first NFL game. He’s never been a star in the NFL, but he’s had seasons of 349 and 481 yards, of 4 and 3 touchdowns, despite entering the NFL as a guy who wasn’t going to catch passes. Klein is absolutely free in drafts. But if he proves to be a good blocker, he could find his way to fantasy-relevant weeks almost by accident. Last year was the first time in Montgomery’s seven-year career that he failed to reach 1,000 scrimmage yards, in fact his first time since his rookie year not to reach 1,100. He also saw a career-low 158 carries, down from 185 in 2024 after never having under 200 before that. Sure, Jahmyr Gibbs took his game to a new level last year and Montgomery had to suffer as a result, but he’s also 28 now and has developed into more of just a plodder — he had 15 explosive runs last year (per FTN Stats & Charting ), his fewest in three years with the Lions, and moving from the Detroit offensive line to whatever Houston has put together certainly won’t help that. If Montgomery can’t be counted on to break the occasional explosive run, and if Woody Marks is the receiving back in Houston, and if the Houston line can’t give him much help before the run, what is the appeal of Montgomery as a Texan? I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s losing work to Jawhar Jordan by the end of the year. The Titans are improving, but there’s still plenty of work to do to get them to contender status. The Colts have potential, but with Daniel Jones a mystery both in health and ability, it’s hard to roll with them. I’ve already written why I think the Jaguars will be a third-place team this year . That leaves the Texans to win the AFC South. That feels safe. The problem is … are the Texans that good? To be sure, this team has a very good defense, but we know that defense is less predictable year-over-year than offense. Stover, a 2024 fourth-round pick, has yet to reach the 30-yard mark as a pass catcher in a single game and now faces significant competition for the backup role behind Dalton Schultz due to the Texans' selection of Marlin Klein in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft and with Brevin Jordan still in the picture. While Stover could play a sizable amount of rotational snaps in Year 3, he may carry the least pass-catching upside within Houston's tight end corps

Welcome to the ninth year of the Houston Texans Rosterology. The longest-running article series on the site is back again to document the process of crafting the team’s initial 53-man roster. The Texans have been at OTAs this week, which gives us insight into the team’s initial depth chart and how the team plans to use some of their new additions. At the onset, this is the deepest roster I’ve ever had the pleasure of covering. I recall entering training camp in 2021, I only thought there were 40 roster-worthy players on the entire 90-man roster. This year? I have 63 players worthy of the 53-man roster. A truly incredible improvement. Similar to how NCAA Basketball’s Bracketology works, I’ll update the below with the Last Four (players) in the roster, the first four out, the biggest riser, and biggest faller. I’ll update this series every other Tuesday until the final 53-man roster is announced on Sunday, August 30th. Note: Rookies are in bold and UDFAs are italicized Alijah Huzzie , nickel Naquan Jones , DT Jamal Hill, LB Brevin Jordan , TE Justin Watson , WR Jarrett Patterson , OC/OG Cade Stover , TE Marte Mapu , LB The free agent defensive end holds a lot of weight in the room right now. He is the backup behind Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter even though he has only had a rotational role in his time in Chicago . Considering how productive Derek Barnett was in the same role last year, Robinson has high expectations and big shoes to fill. The Texans are demonstrating immense patience and trust in the new DE in a critical role by not adding another player to compete against him. Patterson has started 21 games over the past three seasons, but was thrown to the wolves when Houston drafted Kelyan Rutledge and Febechi Nwaiwu in the 2026 NFL Draft. Patterson’s lack of strength and power have limited him in the run game, and he struggled to protect Stroud throughout his career. Houston may quickly be looking to move on from the former sixth round pick. C.J. Stroud, Davis Mills CUT: Graham Mertz Analysis: I predict Houston will only keep two QBs on the roster and designate Mertz to the practice squad with the intention of elevating him up to the roster as the emergency QB throughout the season. Mertz’s development in year two and another season removed from his ACL tear will be an interesting talking point. With Mills facing the last year of his contract, can Mertz present enough of a case to eventually assume the backup QB role? David Montgomery , Woody Marks , British Brooks , Jawhar Jordan CUT: Noah Whittington, Josh Pitsenberger , Evan Hull Analysis: The Texans abstained from adding to this position in the draft. That saved Jordan’s role as the third RB… for now. He will compete with undrafted rookie Noah Whittington for the last roster spot. Whittington is a bowling ball and better fit for the new running scheme. Look for Whittington to earn reps throughout camp. British Brooks has waded through injury and multiple blocking schemes throughout the past two seasons. However, there are reports that TE Cade Stover could be switching to fullback. If that’s the case, the entire RB room could be upended. A lot of moving pieces in this room, but OTAs will shine light on this group over the next several days. Nico Collins , Tank Dell , Jayden Higgins , Jaylin Noel , Xavier Hutchinson , Lewis Bond CUT: Justin Watson, Jared Wayne , Daniel Sobkowics, Jalen Walthall, Treyvhon Saunders, Jha’Quan Jackson Analysis: Rookie Lewis Bond is impressing immediately. His ascension will put stress on veteran Justin Watson, who had his worst season of his career with Houston. The Texans would save $1.5M if they cut Watson. Watson’s role in the offense as a big slot option for Stroud, but that never materialized. Their battle this offseason will be an examination into winning now or building for the future in the WR room. Woody Marks Should Have Plenty of Opportunities to Catch Passes
Although the Houston Texans acquired running back David Montgomery in an offseason trade with the Detroit Lions, second-year back Woody Marks should "stay fresh in a complementary role that should involve a lot of opportunities to catch passes out of the backfield," according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Sports. As long as Montgomery stays healthy, Marks won't have an opportunity to take over a three-down role in Houston, but he could still be very valuable for fantasy managers in PPR leagues, and RotoBaller has Marks currently ranked as the No. 45 overall RB in half-PPR setups. The former fourth-rounder out of USC in 2025 was a prolific pass-catcher as a Trojan and during his time at Mississippi State. Marks finished his rookie campaign in the NFL with a team-high 703 rushing yards on 196 carries after taking over the starting gig from veteran Nick Chubb. The 25-year-old added 24 receptions on 36 targets for 208 yards and three scores through the air in 16 regular-season games (eight starts). In college, Marks had at least 47 catches in four of his five seasons
