J.J. McCarthy will be the Giants starter in their Week 7 matchup against Houston. The Giants have benched Jameis Winston in favor of the younger McCarthy, who came to the Giants via trade with Minnesota a couple weeks ago. McCarthy has his flaws, some of which were on full display in the Giants comeback attempt against the Saints. However, he also nearly brought them back to a win, so it sounds like the coaching staff has decided the benefits outweigh the risks. Five NFL teams getting the most out of their rookie class: Dolphins, Browns leading the way
Week 5 of the NFL season has come and gone, and we have a good sample size of snaps so far, including from rookies. Seven teams had more than one pick in the first round of the 2026 draft: Jets , Browns , Titans , Chiefs , Giants , Cowboys and Dolphins . So, how are those rookie classes performing in relation to others? There are several ways to measure and weigh the impact of rookie performers, but there is no substitute for playing time. Before getting into the teams whose rookies have played the most, the five lowest snap totals belong to the Broncos (63), Rams (194), Seahawks (283), Eagles (403) and Cardinals (545). Here are the rookie classes that have played the most snaps this season: Baltimore's rookie class is headlined by offensive lineman Vega Ioane. He was playing right guard but was forced to start at center in Week 5, and the acquisition of Cam Jurgens will allow the Ravens to get the five best linemen on the field. Ioane is allowing pressure for every 32.4 pass blocking snaps, according to TruMedia. Rookie tight ends Matthew Hibner and Josh Cuevas have helped the franchise absorb the losses of Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar . Wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane saw a significant workload in Week 1, but was then lost for the season due to injury. Cornerback Chandler Rivers and edge rushers Zion Young and Ethan Burke have also factored into the defensive rotation. New York made two selections in the top-10 overall: linebacker Arvell Reese and right guard Francis Mauigoa . Those two players have accounted for more than half of the Giants' rookie snap counts. Additionally, 22% of the rookie snap count has been played on special teams. Reese has looked the part through five games. Mauigoa is allowing a pressure once every 18.7 pass blocking snaps, according to TruMedia. Cornerback Colton Hood has started two games for the team. Wide receiver Malachi Fields has been an asset in both the run and the pass. I wrote about Fields as one of the non-first-round picks who have taken on a large role this season. Los Angeles is off to an unforeseen and uncharacteristic 0-5 start. The team's issues go well beyond injuries, but those, too, have taken a toll. When veteran center Tyler Biadasz suffered a season-ending injury prior to the season, it forced Day 2 selection Jake Slaughter into the starting lineup. Slaughter is allowing a pressure for every 25.7 pass blocking snaps, according to TruMedia. Ten rookies have taken offensive or defensive snaps for the Chargers this season. Of the 612 offensive snaps, five offensive linemen have combined for all but 22. Safety Genesis Smith and edge rusher Akheem Mesidor are fully immersed in the defensive rotation. All of Cleveland's top-100 overall selections have delivered thus far. Spencer Fano and Austin Barber are starting at left tackle and right guard, respectively. Fano is allowing a pressure for every 23.1 pass blocking snaps, according to TruMedia. Barber is allowing a pressure for every 46.3 pass blocking snaps. Wide receivers Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion rank in the top three on the team in each of the following receiving categories: receptions, yards and targets. Safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren has seen his role expand with each passing week. His length and aggressiveness playing downhill have allowed the team to be more creative with personnel and blitz packages. McNeil-Warren often takes on the role of playing single high when the team opts for it. Cleveland's five other draft selections have a combined 118 snaps; all but three of which have come on special teams. Miami is on pace for 7,106 rookie snaps played this season, which is just off the pace for the most played in a season over the last decade. The Browns' 2016 rookie class played 7,185 snaps during a 16-game season. I previously wrote about that Browns class and other high-volume rookie classes over the last decade. Commanders, Giants head to overtime
The Giants trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter, but the Commanders could not put them away. Jameis Winston threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a game-tying score to Malik Nabers with 1:43 to play and the Commanders’ ensuing drive died near midfield, so the two teams are going to overtime with the score tied at 27. Jayden Daniels ran for two scores in the second half to stretch the Commanders’ lead to 14 points, but Winston finally found his form after struggling in the rain for much of the day. He has thrown two scores to tight end Isaiah Likely in addition to the one to Nabers and is 28-of-44 for 283 yards overall. The Giants have all the momentum, but they’ll need to do what the Commanders couldn’t by finishing the job in the extra period

J.J. McCarthy made his Giants debut on the team’s first offensive possession in Washington. McCarthy came off the bench one play after Jameis Winston converted a third-and-13 with a 15-yard pass to tight end Isaiah Likely. He threw a quick pass to wide receiver Darnell Mooney that went for a five-yard loss, although the Giants wound up moving forward thanks to a facemask penalty. Winston returned to the game on the next play and the Giants wound up trying a 50-yard field goal a few snaps later. Knee soreness kept Malik Nabers off the field on Wednesday, but the Giants wide receiver was back at work on Thursday. Nabers was a limited participant as the Giants continued preparing to face the Commanders in Week 5. Nabers was noncommittal about his status for the game when he spoke to reporters Wednesday, but the return to work is a good sign that he’ll be able to go. Left tackle Andrew Thomas (groin) also returned on a limited basis. The Giants have managed Thomas’s practice workload all season without him missing any game action. Running back Najee Harris (personal) was a full participant after missing the first practice of the week. Defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck) and safety Jason Pinnock (concussion) remained out of practice. Tight end Isaiah Likely (knee, groin), tight end Chris Manhertz (shoulder), and running back Cam Skattebo (shoulder) were limited for the second straight day. Week 3 featured three fines for blindside blocks, two fines for hip-drop tackles
The NFL’s announcement of fines for Week 3 featured six infractions for player safety fouls that qualify toward possible suspensions. Two of those fouls were hip-drop tackles. 49ers linebacker Fred Warner and Rams safety Kam Curl were each fined $17,911. Warner was also fined $23,882 for illegal use of his helmet in a tackle. Texans linebacker Jamal Hill, Giants tight end Isaiah Likely, and Steelers linebacker Cole Holcomb were each fined for blindside blocks. Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was fined for a hit on a defenseless player. Any player with three fines for any one of those infractions will be suspended for one game. The same potential penalty applies to fouls for launching or horse-collar tackles. No player has been fined more than once for any of the qualifying infractions yet this season

Another post-Eli Manning nightmare for Giants and their fans as Jaxson Dart feared done for season
After winning two Super Bowl championships with Eli Manning at quarterback, it appears the New York Giants franchise and their fans are cursed to be the NFL's Sisyphus, pushing the boulder, which represents their hopes, up and down the NFL's hill for eternity. New York went five postseason-less years after Manning's last playoff game in 2016, a crushing 38-13 defeat in the NFC wild card round at the Green Bay Packers , before coming close to climbing the hill in 2022. That's when quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley helped lead the Giants to a 31-24 wild-card round road upset of the NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings . The crash back down came once again the following week with a 38-7 divisional round defeat at the Eagles that revealed exactly how far away that iteration of the Giants truly was from contending. Fast forward to 2026, and the Giants had hope once again. Things appeared to be different with New York's offensive core of second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart , Pro Bowl wide receiver Malik Nabers , bowling ball running back Cam Skattebo and tight end Isaiah Likely under new Super Bowl-winning head coach John Harbaugh. They punched the Dallas Cowboys , a longtime New York bully under quarterback Dak Prescott , in the mouth in a physical, 28-20 "Sunday Night Football" victory in which they limited Prescott's high-flying offense to just two drives in the second half. The Giants won the time of possession battle 36:40 to 23:20 after converting on 9 of their 11 third downs, with one of Dallas' "stops" being the kneel down on the game's final play. That stood as New York's most efficient, single-game third-down production since 1978. After a 28-6 Week 2 defeat on "Monday Night Football" against the Los Angeles Rams , the boulder has come crashing down once again. Dart exited the game with a knee injury that was initially believed to be a sprained MCL. Now, ESPN reported the 23-year-old could miss "an extended period of time, possibly the season" after testing came back worse than anticipated. Harbaugh said, via ESPN, on Tuesday , that "evaluations are ongoing" and that the team has "learned a lot more." It's a shame given the promise Dart flashed: he is the only quarterback in NFL history with 18-plus passing touchdowns (18) and 9-plus (9) rushing touchdowns in his first 14 career starts, per CBS Sports Research. In the Week 1 victory over Dallas, Dart became just the third quarterback in Giants history with 3-plus passing touchdowns (3) and 50-plus rushing yards (54) in a game, joining Phil Simms (1988) and Fran Tarkenton (1967 and 1968). Unfortunately for New York, it appeared the injury bug was going to bite Dart sooner or later, as it has every Giants primary starting quarterback post-Manning. He has been evaluated in the blue medical tent in 44% of his NFL starts, including the preseason, per CBS Sports Research. Dart's previous six blue tent visits were for concussion evaluation before his knee injury sidelined him on Monday night. Manning once made 210 consecutive regular-season starts, but both quarterbacks New York has drafted in the first round in an attempt to replace him as their franchise quarterback, Jones and Dart, haven't been able to stay healthy. In the one year Jones was fully healthy in 2022, New York reached the divisional round. Dart missed two games with a concussion a year ago, and there's a chance he doesn't play again this season.
