Things to watch for at Eagles training camp: Offensive tackle edition – PhillyVoice With Johnson sitting out OTAs, third-round rookie Markel Bell got to play with the starters at RT, when it would have been easy to just insert Fred Johnson in there. And then when Lane showed up for minicamp, Bell played LT with the second-team offense. Obviously the team hopes that Bell can develop long-term, but it also appears that they are trying to prepare him for an immediate role as a key backup this season. There’s only so much you can tell in spring practices without pads and very limited contact, but Bell is a massive 6’9, 346-pound OT, and in my opinion he moved well. He also didn’t look unnatural at RT, which is noteworthy considering he really only played LT in college in games, though Bell did note during rookie minicamp that he was cross-trained during practices at Miami at RT. Some guys can easily move back and forth between LT and RT. Some guys (cough, Andre Dillard ) can’t. The Eagles’ hope is that Bell can develop into a legitimate successor for Johnson. And if so, that’s a future first-round pick that can be used to address some other position. Appreciating Vic Fangio – Iggles Blitz The Eagles have run a version of the Vic Fangio scheme since Nick Sirianni took over as coach of the Eagles. It wasn’t until 2024 that they were able to hire Fangio himself that anyone knew how good he and the scheme are. Having the playbook is one thing. Knowing how to teach it and call defenses during the game is quite another. That’s what makes Fangio special. Fangio has coached in the NFL since 1986. He’s been a LBs coach, defensive coordinator and head coach. Some coaches struggle to evolve with the new trends in football, but that isn’t the case with Fangio. 2026 Green Bay Packers Fantasy Preview: Will Matt LaFleur give offense a new look and be more pass heavy?

Matt LaFleur 's Packers seem to strive for good, but never great. They are not nearly aggressive enough and they too often take their foot all the way off the gas after seizing a lead. Even a soulless, agnostic NFL observer like me finds great pain in LaFleur's approach. I feel for the cheeseheads among us. Points per game: 23 (16th) Total yards per game: 333 (15th) Plays per game: 59.4 (25th) Dropbacks per game: 35 (29th) Dropback EPA per play: 0.27 (2nd) Designed rush attempts per game: 27.3 (8th) Rush EPA per play: -0.07 (21st) So, the question headed into 2026, LaFleur's eighth season at the helm, will be whether the Packers are ready to operate like the ultra-aggressive, win-now, win-always Lions and Bears, coached by men for whom no lead is enough. That LaFleur plays these two throat-stepping teams twice a season every season has been a problem. QB: Jordan Love , Tyrod Taylor WR: Christian Watson , Savion Williams WR: Jayden Reed , Bo Melton WR: Matthew Golden , Skyy Moore TE: Tucker Kraft , Luke Musgrave LaFleur seems to have taken his players’ grades to heart. Romeo Doubs appeared all too happy to hit the road for New England during free agency, and Dontayvion Wicks wasn’t exactly heartbroken to escape Green Bay for the Eagles. LaFleur in late March acknowledged the organization-wide discontent and spoke to reporters about the issues plaguing his team. “If I’m being honest about it, I think there were some guys that were upset about roles last year, and I think that took a toll on our football team,” LaFleur said. “You need guys that bring great energy every day. I think from a coaching standpoint, role clarity is key, so we’ve got to obviously do a better job communicating with our players, ‘Hey, here’s your role and if you’re unhappy about your role, it’s on you to do something about that, to carve out a role on this football team.’ But yeah, the buy-in is absolutely critical. 'More Granular Focus' "When LaFleur mentions going back to the start, I suspect he means in terms of instruction and installation of the offense rather than a complete rethink of what the system looks like and how it works," Hirschhorn told me, adding that the team's passing offense has "lacked detail" in recent seasons. "Like most of the Kyle Shanahan -influenced schemes in the NFL, mastering the little nuances unlocks everything (marrying run and pass concepts so they present identically to the defense before the snap, syncing up timing between route depth and a QB's dropback, and so forth). As we turn toward the 2026 season, it’s time to take a short look back at 2025. Over the past few weeks, the APC staff has been voting on and discussing the Packers’ top 10 plays of 2025, and we’re happy to unveil our list starting with number 10, when Dontayvion Wicks showed the whole city of Detroit that the Packers could be just as aggressive as the Lions. After the Packers took down the Lions in Week 1, boosted in large part by their very late acquisition of Micah Parsons , their rematch on Thanksgiving shaped up to be one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the second half of the season. The two teams careened into their Week 13 appointment about as close in the standings as they could be: the Packers’ Week 12 win over the Vikings had moved them to 7-3-1 on the year, while the Lions had beaten the Giants in overtime to move to 7-4. Now, squaring off on a holiday on short rest, the teams had a chance to settle what they’d started in Week 1. Could the Packers maintain their midseason momentum, or would the Lions get revenge for the Parsons-shaped surprise sprung on them in the season’s first game? The Packers took the opening kickoff and marched neatly down the field on their first drive. Brandon McManus knocked through a 45-yard field goal to give them a 3-0 lead, and from there the teams settled down to trade punches for the rest of the first quarter. Neither team managed to capture much momentum throughout what remained of the first frame, and neither managed to cross the midfield stripe until the Packers took over with a little more than three minutes to go in the quarter. Bolstered by a 29-yard Josh Jacobs scamper, the Packers were soon threatening deep in Lions territory, and as the second quarter began, Jordan Love and company found themselves facing a 2nd and 12 on the Lions’ 31-yard line. Jacobs powered up the middle for nine, setting up a short third down play, but Love threw incomplete to Christian Watson on second down to bring up a key decision: kick another field goal, or attempt a conversion on 4th and 3. A year earlier, the Lions had beaten the Packers in Detroit in part because of their boldness on fourth downs. Late in that game, the Lions had a chance to kick a relatively short go-ahead field goal on a 4th and 1, but chose instead to go for it. They converted and ran the clock down to practically all zeros before kicking the final field goal, leaving the Packers no time to mount any counterattack. Perhaps with that bold approach in the back of his mind, Packers coach Matt LaFleur decided to pass on the field goal, sending the Packers out to go for it all on fourth down rather than settle for a mere six-point lead. The Packers made it clear they were going to put the weight of the decision on Jordan Love’s shoulders from the moment they broke the huddle. Coming to the line in 11 personnel, the Packers deployed Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs , and Dontayvion Wicks (who had yet to make a catch that day) in a bunch formation to the right. As the play clock dwindled, Wicks broke from the formation and motioned right to left, turning up field along the left sideline at the snap. Love looked briefly to his right before turning to Wicks, lofting a pass that landed in Wicks’ outstretched arms in a narrow space between Detroit defensive backs Brian Branch and Thomas Harper. Wicks deftly tapped his toes as he absorbed a glancing blow from Harper, securing the touchdown to put the Packers up 9-0. A review confirmed Wicks’ score, and Brandon McManus kicked the PAT to give the Packers a double-digit lead. “We knew it was going to come down to the end, so we had to go make the plays that counted,” said Wicks postgame when asked of his score. Brown ’s new team, his old one falls off the top of the board to ninth. The Eagles’ coming cap concerns on defense have forced them to try to replace Brown’s production in the aggregate, and while GM Howie Roseman did a reasonable job in landing Makai Lemon, Hollywood Brown and Dontayvion Wicks at wide receiver this offseason, there’s a significant drop-off between even the 2025 version of Brown and what the Eagles project to get from his replacements in 2026. DeVonta Smith has looked like a WR1 without Brown on the field in the past, but the stylish wideout would have to elevate his game even further to compensate for his missing partner. It was always going to be difficult for Saquon Barkley to sustain his absurd big-play rate from 2024, but after racking up 21 gains of 20 yards or more during his Super Bowl-winning season, Barkley managed only six of them in 2025. He had to do way more work before first contact: He averaged more than 4 yards before he was initially touched by a defender in 2024, but that fell to 2.3 yards in 2025, which was almost exactly the league average for starting backs. I don’t doubt Barkley’s talent, but his true big-play production rate is somewhere between what we saw in 2024 and 2025. The one player who might miss former Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo (now with the Dolphins) is Dallas Goedert . A tight end who has often underperformed his touchdown expectation in the red zone, Goedert scored 11 times last season, including seven times from inside the 5-yard line (after averaging 4.4 touchdowns per 17 games over the rest of his career). Even if the Eagles aren’t as reliant on the tush push in 2026, it would be a surprise if Goedert saw as many designed touches near the goal line again this season. Second-round rookie Eli Stowers could figure in at tight end by the end of the season too. And then last season, Hunt was the Eagles’ most productive edge rusher. In addition to his 6 1/2 sacks, Hunt also led the group with a pressure rate of 17.3%. 2024: 241 snaps (25%), 1 1/2 sacks, 3 QB hits, 0 INTs, 1 TFL, 2 FFs … 2025: 693 snaps (62%), 6 1/2 sacks, 14 QB hits, 3 INTs, 9 TFLs, 2 FFs. This offseason, the Eagles went out and traded for Jonathan Greenard to be their top-of-the-rotation edge rusher. But don’t sleep on Hunt’s ceiling in 2026. Philly’s offense went out with a whimper in the second half of last season, with Hurts posting a net negative on dropbacks in Expected Points Added (-11.1) during his final nine games of 2025, including the Eagles’ playoff loss, per Next Gen Stats. The vibes were even worse than those numbers. Given the scrutiny attached to playing quarterback for the Eagles, Hurts will either enter next offseason with questions about his future with the team or be riding high after returning to something resembling the form that made him the MVP runner-up in 2022 and the Super Bowl LIX MVP. The latter of the two scenarios seems well within reach. Hurts is getting something of a fresh start in 2026, with former NFL QB Sean Mannion replacing Kevin Patullo as offensive coordinator after Patullo’s rough lone season as the play-caller. A.J. Brown was shipped to the Patriots after he and Hurts grew apart, according to Brown. The receiving corps has a much different look, with Hollywood Brown , Dontayvion Wicks and first-round pick Makai Lemon arriving this offseason. I don’t know if we’ll see peak Saquon Barkley again, but he still ranked 10th in rushing yards (1,140) even while taking a big step back with the rest of the offense last season. The ingredients are there for Hurts to roar back on a contending team. He’ll have to be much better than the version of him we saw for much of last season, though, in an offense that will have him lining up under center more often. That is, essentially, the job description for Parks Frazier, the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach after spending 2025 as the offensive passing game coordinator. He is the direct contact for Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee , Andy Dalton and Cole Payton, the four men who are, together, the Eagles’ quarterback room. “From the quarterback perspective, again, it’s just trying to take one of the hardest positions in sports and make it as simple as possible,” Frazier said. ”So you try to chunk things together. You try to make it where guys can play fast even though there’s a lot going on. So that’s been the biggest thing I learned from those guys is just, you know, you see it from the outside and you see all the motions, you see all the different plays, but how do you take that and you package it together to make it simple for the quarterback on the player, so they can go out there and play fast?” Play fast. Much to the frustration of eager Packers fans, Green Bay spent much of first-round WR Matthew Golden’s rookie season bringing him along slowly. Injuries and a crowded receiver room limited his opportunities, and he finished the year with just 29 receptions for 361 yards and one touchdown. However, the team has taken many actions this offseason which suggest it expects — and may try to facilitate — a much larger role from the former Texas standout in his second season. As Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated recently noted , Golden is one of several young players the Packers seem to trust significantly more entering the 2026 season than they did a year ago. Green Bay moved on from veterans Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks this offseason, creating a clearer path for Golden to climb the depth chart and become a more prominent piece of Matt LaFleur’s offense. The Packers also continue to speak highly of Golden’s long-term outlook. General manager Brian Gutekunst said earlier this offseason that the receiver’s “ceiling is very, very high,” while head coach Matt LaFleur recently pointed to the opportunities available for Golden entering his second NFL campaign. And it sounds like Golden is embracing the challenge, recently telling reporters that his difficult rookie season helped develop a stronger mindset and added motivation. Rather than dwelling on limited production, he has focused on turning those lessons into growth. Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love said he "still has some great weapons" in the passing game going into the 2026 season despite losing Romeo Doubs in free agency and Dontayvion Wicks to an offseason trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, mentioning Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and second-year wideout Matthew Golden as his top options. The Packers also have tight end Tucker Kraft (knee) coming back from a torn ACL that cut his season short in 2025, so Love certainly still has plenty of pass-catching weapons to take the next step in 2026 in his sixth year in the NFL. The 27-year-old former 26th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Utah State threw for 3,381 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only six interceptions in 15 regular-season starts last year, which placed him as the QB16 in fantasy scoring. OR NOT, OFFENSE IS STILL LOADED: I’m not going to sit here and pretend the Eagles won’t miss A.J. Brown. Even at 29 and with balky knees and a bad attitude, he’s still a really good wide receiver, and we saw that at times last year. But when you focus instead on what the Eagles do have on offense, there is no reason this can’t be a top-five unit in 2026. Super Bowl MVP at quarterback. Three-time 1,000-yard receiver now WR1, a 1 st -round rookie at WR2 and take your pick of Dontayvion Wicks or Hollywood Brown as WR3. A tight end who’s got the 5 th -most yards among tight ends over the last seven years and a promising rookie at TE2. A superstar running back and a backup who averaged 5.9 yards per carry last year. And an offensive line with three Pro Bowlers and an all-pro that’s among the league’s best when healthy. And a play caller who is going to be a massive upgrade. The Eagles’ offense last year averaged 21.1 points, 311 yards, 194 passing yards and 117 rushing yards per game. Pathetic, really. With what they have now? No reason this offense can’t average 30 points, 370 total yards, 230 passing yards and 140 rushing yards per game. They’re loaded. Just focus on what they have, not what they lost. JALEN HURTS STAT OF THE WEEK: Jalen Hurts has 63 career rushing touchdowns and needs seven to pass Hall of Famer Steve Van Buren for most in franchise history. Van Buren scored 69 from 1944 through 1951. Including playoffs, Hurts already has the most in franchise history with 73, two more than Van Buren. WHAT ABOUT DAMEON PIERCE ? Veteran running back Dameon Pierce is an interesting addition. Pierce, who signed with the Eagles in March, only has 54 carries over the past two years but had a heck of a rookie year with the Texans in 2022, rushing for 939 yards and four TDs with 30 catches. Now, that was a long tim ago, and he really hasn’t done much since, although he did average 7.3 yards on 40 carries in 2024. The Texans really haven’t had much of an offensive line the last few years, and Pierce didn’t have a lot to work with. He finished last year with the Chiefs but only had four carries. But one upon a time he was a pretty tough, explosive back and behind a capable o-line he could add some juice to the running game. Along with Bijan Robinson and Salem’s Jon Taylor, he’s one of only three NFL running backs with multiple touchdown runs of at least 75 yards over the last five seasons, so there’s something there. The Eagles didn’t pay anything for Pierce, and with a good summer he could make the final roster as a fourth running back behind Saquon Barkley , Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley . Elijah Mitchell , who just signed last week, is in a similar spot, coming off one big year with the 49ers back in 2021 (963 yards, five TDs) and very little since. One of these veteran running backs will probably stick. My money’s on Pierce. ACTUALLY, PHILLY IS CLOSE TO HEAVEN: We all saw where A.J. Brown said of being in New England , “I know this ain’t heaven, but it’s close to it.” If I’m a member of the Eagles’ organization, I find that insulting and disrespectful. During his time in Philly, Brown had over 5,000 receiving yards, made two Pro Bowls, was a 1 st – or 2 nd -team all-pro three times, reached two Super Bowls, won one and made $87.2 million. And then after playing like garbage in the playoff game against the 49ers and probably costing his team a win, after whining his way out of town and after one freaking OTA practice you’re going to call New England close [... truncated ...]
