Cowboys 2026 roster rundown: QB Dak Prescott
Ahead of his 11th season, Dak Prescott is Dallas ’ longest-tenured player on the current roster. Though still a bit behind Jason Witten and L.P. Ladouceur for the all-time mark of 16 seasons, Prescott is far more concerned with a different goal. Like all Cowboys fans, his focus is on joining Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman as the only quarterbacks to bring Super Bowl wins to the franchise. Years in NFL: 10 Acquired by: 2016 4th-round pick Few NFL players have a more well-known story. Prescott was a mid-range QB prospect in 2016, seen as a developmental project at best. When the Cowboys selected him in the fourth round, there was little thought that he was their QB of the future, or even the primary backup. But a training camp injury to Kellen More allowed Prescott to become the primary backup. Then Tony Romo ’s injury in the third preseason game, plus Prescott’s dazzling performances in those August games, cleared the way for him to be an unexpected Week 1 rookie starter. Prescott set two rookie QB records in 2016: most wins (13) and the highest passer rating (104.9) in a single season. Though Romo was ready to return in Week 11, Dallas’ eight-game winning streak kept Prescott as QB1. And as we know, he’s held the job ever since. We’ve watched Prescott develop as a passer since that first year. When Moore became offensive coordinator in 2019, it opened up the offense and helped Prescott start putting up much bigger numbers. He went from 3,885 passing yards the year before to a career-high 4,902, plus his first season with at least 30 passing touchdowns. Even under new coaches and coordinators since then, Prescott has remained one of the NFL’s most productive, high-volume statistical quarterbacks. Like the rest of the team, though, Prescott’s career has been more recognized for playoff failures than regular-season success. Like Romo, he’s never been past the second round. And while he’s had a couple of great postseason performances, Prescott has also struggled more often than he’s shined. For a franchise that defines itself by Super Bowl wins, Prescott’s legacy is still part of a greater ongoing story that’s been torturing Cowboys fans since 1996. Going into this season, Prescott is even more entrenched in his starting role than Romo was 10 years ago. His reputation as a leader and one of the NFL’s best human beings is unquestioned, and he’s still expected to do big things for fantasy owners. But all of that is window dressing to the team’s success, and what Prescott does to either help or hurt them in those ultimate goals. Years Left: 3 2026 Cap Hit: $44.6 million For many, Prescott’s contract is the catalyst for criticism. If he were only making $33 million per year like Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold , he’d be much less maligned. But when the Cowboys made him the most expensive player in NFL history (since passed by Pat Mahomes ) in 2021, they opened the door to Prescott’s performance often being compared against his compensation. One of the biggest issues with the contract is that, to conduct other business, Dallas has had to consistently restructure the deal to reduce salary cap hits. This has made Prescott virtually untouchable in terms of job security: even the final year of the deal in 2028 still has over $55 million in dead money currently. You don’t mind that when a guy is winning Super Bowls, but it’s much harder to swallow given Prescott’s postseason record. Role: Starting QB Roster Chance: 100% While they’ve dabbled with reclaiming Trey Lance or developing Joe Milton , the Cowboys have yet to make any major addition to their QB pipeline during Prescott’s run. That becomes increasingly concerning as he turns 33 later this month, nearing the precipice for career decline. While we’ve become more used to quarterbacks starting in their late-30s and sometimes even 40s, it’s hard to project when Prescott’s effectiveness is going to drop off. Cowboys need the 2026 draft class to step up like the one in 2016
The 2015 season was an utter disaster for the Dallas Cowboys . After his Week 1 heroics, Tony Romo went down the following week against the Philadelphia Eagles with a broken collarbone for the second time in his career. Then came the fun carousel of Brandon Weeden , Matt Cassel , and Kellen Moore. Things went so well in 2014; how could they go so wrong just a year later? Many were left wondering what the Cowboys’ future would look like. Enter the 2016 draft class . Ezekiel Elliott brought the juice and rejuvenated the running game in Dallas in a way that wasn’t seen since the days of Emmitt Smith. The offense was shepherded by a compensatory fourth-round pick; a dart throw at quarterback in Dak Prescott . The rookie was as efficient as can be, and his infectious leadership connected with the entire locker room. The Cowboys went from the basement to the best record in the NFC overnight. A decade later, the franchise hopes the 2026 draft class can have a similar impact. The team needs them to. Heading into the 2016 season, the window for the franchise to compete for a championship with Romo and Witten leading the team was closing. That’s why Elliott was selected over Jalen Ramsey —to give the quarterback a running game unlike anything he had prior to that point in his career. While Dallas didn’t take a skill player with their first, first-round pick (even though Jordyn Tyson was heavily rumored), one could argue that the team trading up for Caleb Downs should have a similar impact. After Emmitt Smith finished his career in Dallas, fans were waiting for the team to find the next guy. When Darren Woodson left the Cowboys, he was never truly replaced. That might have changed when the team picked Downs. The former Ohio State safety was graded by some as the best player in the draft, and while Dallas could certainly have gone in a different direction based on positional value, they went with the player they felt could impact the team right away, not only on the field but as a leader in the locker room. Pairing Downs with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, in theory, will change the defense overnight in a way that Elliott changed the offense almost immediately. While the rookie curve is a real thing, Downs’ football intelligence hints he could be the exception to the rule. Elliott and Prescott weren’t the only contributors from their draft class, and Downs won’t be the only one with high expectations either. Malachi Lawrence, who was selected with Dallas’ second first-round pick, should help elevate the pass rush immediately. The Cowboys lacked a true pass rusher last year after trading away Micah Parsons . The trio of Rashan Gary , Donovan Ezeiruaku , and Lawrence should help. The former UCF product had 27.5 sacks in the final three years at college, 11 of them coming as a senior. Lawrence was someone whom Christian Parker targeted as an integral part of his defense. Defensive ends can take time to hit the ground running, but if you combine Parker’s specific vision for Lawrence, along with the player’s work ethic, there’s a chance he could be running with the first-team defense for most of training camp, depending on where Ezeiruaku is in his rehab. That would be a huge step in his projection as a rookie. Malik Collins and Anthony Brown had significant roles as rookies, too. The 2026 class has a few guys who could have their stamp on the defense by season’s end. Jaishawn Barham was picked in the third round and could be used in a variety of ways in Parker’s defense. Even though he’s starting out at linebacker, he showed an ability to rush the passer at Michigan. The uncertainty around DeMarvion Overshown ’s long-term health and the immediate impact of Dee Winters might vault Barham into a starting role sooner than later. LT Overton is a dark horse from the class that could fill the void left by Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas . This will provide an opportunity for new Rams edge rusher Myles Garrett to practice against his hometown team. The games for the Dallas Cowboys 2026 football season have now been set, at least all of them that come before the post-season. It wasn’t that long ago we learned the dates and times of the Cowboys 17-game regular-season schedule . Now we have the dates and times for the preseason slate. Once upon a time, teams played up to six preseason games before a season. Thankfully that has become fewer preseason games and more regular-season games. This year the Cowboys will play the Seattle Seahawks , the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints. @ Seattle Seahawks: Saturday August 15th, 8:00 PM ET @ Arizona Cardinals: Saturday August 22nd, 10:00 PM ET vs New Orleans Saints: Friday August 28th, 8:00 PM ET The Cowboys will face both the Seahawks and the Cardinals in the regular-season. Five of the most intriguing games on the Saints 2026 schedule
The Saints open the 2026 season on the road against the Detroit Lions . Historically a bottom feeder, the Lions have been one of the best teams in the NFL over the past few seasons. This is largely due to… a bunch of former Saints . Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell served as the Saints’ Tight End’s Coach and Assistant Head Coach under Sean Payton from 2016-20. New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn served as the Defensive Coordinator for the Lions from 2021-24 and was a critical ingredient to the success of those teams. Glenn was also a Saints staff member under the Payton regime serving as the Defensive Back’s Coach from 2016-20 as well. Even a lot of the core Lions players for the early 2020s were former Saints such as Alex Anzalone , CJ Gardner-Johnson, and Teddy Bridgewater . Although most of those guys are not with the Lions anymore, this game still intrigues me. Dan Campbell is a Sean Payton disciple. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to infer that the culture that Campbell has built in Detroit likely resembles the culture of the Sean Payton era Saints. This culture has resulted in them developing a reputation as a playoff-contending franchise. Week 1 will be an immediate statement game opportunity for the Saints. If they come out Week 1 and pop the Lions on the road, it will basically be the equivalent to taking out a megaphone and announcing that “Kellen Moore and Tyler Shough have arrived! The Saints are back!” The very next week, the Saints are faced with another game behind enemy lines against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are another franchise with a reputation as a respectable playoff contender, year in and year out. There is no sugar coating it, these first two games are tough. There is a serious threat of starting 0-2. Over the offseason, the Ravens fired Head Coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons. It will be interesting to see these new-look Ravens under first year Head Coach Jesse Minter, as they attempt to bounce back from a disappointing 8-9 2025 campaign. They still have arguably the best Quarterback in the world, Lamar Jackson , at the helm. Minter has a defensive background which is the side of the ball that Ravens struggled the most with in 2025. Overall, this is a franchise that has a history of consistency and winning football games ever since they became the Baltimore Ravens in 1996. As a Saints fan, this game being the second of a two-game road streak to start the season concerns me. However, they say iron sharpens iron. This will be a great trial by fire opportunity for a Saints team that is dealing with the highest preseason expectations that they’ve had in years. I am excited to see how they handle it. This is the game that I am most excited for, by far. The Saints have not played in a prime time game since that humiliating 33-10 loss to Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos on the night where they inducted Drew Brees into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2024. The team was not given a single primetime opportunity for the entirety of the 2025 season. Looking ahead to 2026, we got treated to a banger. Week 4, the Saints will host their archrival Atlanta Falcons in the Superdome on Monday Night Football. On this night, the game presentation will commemorate the 20 year anniversary of the iconic “Domecoming” game. I shouldn’t have to explain why this game makes this list. It’s a divisional game, it’s on prime time, it will honor a super historic and meaningful part of Saints history, and (to top it all off) it’s against the Falcons. Those dirty birds swept the Saints last season, as I’m sure every member of the Who Dat Nation is acutely aware of. It’s time for the Saints to get their “get back.” This game has so many layers to it, it’s hard not to be excited. I’m just realizing that I chose four of the first five games on the schedule. That was not intentional. Hey, I guess that’s just how the cookie crumbles. The Vikings have been a really good team under Head Coach Kevin O’Connell. Saints open as underdogs in 12 games in 2026
The New Orleans Saints’ 2026 schedule has been officially released. With the release, sports books have begun releasing their odds, with the black and gold entering 2026 as underdogs in 12 of their 17 matchups. Despite entering as underdogs in the majority of their games, sportsbooks are listing the Saints’ win total at 7.5 for the season. The Saints were granted one of the easiest strength-of-schedule for the upcoming season. While an estimated easier schedule in 2026, there are still tough stretches. The Saints open the season in back-to-back games on the road against tough opponents in the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens . Through weeks 10-14, sandwiched between two NFC South matchups with the Carolina Panthers , the Saints will visit the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals in back-to-back games before hosting the Green Bay Packers . Despite the lack of confidence in the Saints outside the building, there’s plenty of optimism for fans of the black and gold. After a breakout stretch at the end of the season for quarterback Tyler Shough, Kellen Moore and the Saints’ front offense completely revamped the offense, signing big-name free agents in Travis Etienne and David Edwards while investing the eighth overall pick on receiver help, drafting Jordy Tyson. The Saints, at a minimum, will be an exciting team to watch in 2026, but they are favorites in just five games this season, and a win total set at 7.5 is on the safer side. Playing against the weak NFC South twice a year, facing teams such as the Las Vegas Raiders , the Cleveland Browns , and the Arizona Cardinals should warrant a bigger win expectation. Still, back-to-back seasons failing to reach .500 have oddsmakers skeptical. When doing our most recent win totals at Canal Street Chronicles, I was a bit more skeptical than my peers but remained with an optimistic prediction, placing the Saints 9-8. While there are significant stretches and matchups the Saints will be heavy underdogs for, a second year for Shough and Moore could be the big turnaround most fans of the black and gold are expecting. The NFL lives by “any given Sunday,” and who enters as the favorite and underdog doesn’t always equate to the final score. This could be true for both the Saints as the favorites and the underdogs. In 2026, they’ll steal games they appear to be completely outclassed in, and they’ll lose to teams who are tanking. Despite this, the hard reality that New Orleans opens the season as favorites in just five games this season still shows the media is not yet as high on Shough as the fanbase and front office are
