Ranking NFL contenders by backup QB situations: Mac Jones, Davis Mills headline best insurance policies
A quality NFL backup quarterback doesn't exactly garner the headlines of an All-Pro-caliber starter. It shouldn't. That said, the value cannot be overlooked. If a franchise's starter goes down for a game, or two, or six, the season could go in the toilet in an instant if they don't have someone who can come in and keep things afloat momentarily. So, while the last thing anyone wants to think about is the established starter missing time, it's good to have a quality insurance plan. Take last season, for example. A number of backup quarterbacks rose to the occasion, and their successes drove the playoff picture. A key reason why the Houston Texans overcame C.J. Stroud's absence after a concussion in Week 9 was due to backup Davis Mills thriving when his number was called. Mills went 3-0 over his stretch as the starter, which helped Houston mount a playoff berth. In the NFC, Mac Jones led the San Francisco 49ers to a 5-3 record as the starter while Brock Purdy was sidelined, and that helped them stay in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the conference until Week 18. Of course, maybe the greatest recent example of having a top backup is Nick Foles in 2017, as he stepped in for an injured Carson Wentz and led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl LII title. With all that in mind, we're going to look at a slew of contenders and size up what their backup quarterback situation looks like and rank them. To draw a line in the sand for what "contender" actually means, we're looking at clubs that have odds to win Super Bowl LXI of +2500 or shorter at DraftKings Sportsbook, which gives us 16 teams in total. Starter : Josh Allen Backups : Kyle Allen , Shane Buechele Kyle Allen inked a two-year, $4.1 million deal to be the primary backup to Josh Allen, while 2021 undrafted free agent Shane Buechele is the third-stringer. Allen, who has been in the NFL since 2018, has starting experience (19 total starts), but hasn't started a game since Week 13 of the 2022 season while a member of the Houston Texans. In that game, he completed just 51.3% of his passes, tossed two interceptions, and recorded two fumbles (one lost). For his career, the 30-year-old is 7-12 as a starter, while completing 62.5% of his passes with an 82.1 passer rating. While maybe no quarterback can compare to Josh Allen, it would be a Grand Canyon-sized difference in the event they need to hand the keys over to Kyle Allen. Starter : Jared Goff Backups : Teddy Bridgewater , Luke Altmyer (UDFA) Not that long ago, Teddy Bridgewater was coaching high school football. After resigning from his post at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in August of last year, he signed on to be a backup for the Buccaneers and did see some action in Week 12 last season against the Rams . There, Bridgewater completed 53.3% of his throws for just 62 yards. The last time he started a game came back in Week 17 of the 2022 season as a member of the Dolphins . Now, Bridgewater is back in Detroit (where he served as a backup from 2023 to 2024) with the Lions and will likely serve as the top option behind Jared Goff, with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer also in the fold. While Bridgewater has 65 regular-season starts under his belt and is above .500 (33-32) over that run, it's fair to wonder how much he truly has in the tank as he'll turn 34 during the 2026 season. Starter : Justin Herbert Backups : Trey Lance , DJ Uiagalelei Justin Herbert has been remarkably durable over the course of his career, considering the volume of hits he takes. Since entering the NFL in 2020, Herbert has taken the most hits (615) and the most sacks (225) in the league. That includes 129 quarterback hits last season, which was tied for the second-most in the last 20 years. While L.A. has invested in the offensive line and was simply dealt a bad hand with injuries to Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt last season, you'd think they'd pursue a better backup than they currently have in Trey Lance. Kyle Allen’s back with the Bills as a confidant for Josh Allen
The Buffalo Bills have an elite quarterback. That’s not just me rambling; the good folks over at ESPN recently released their quarterback rankings, and they had Josh Allen at No. 1 among all NFL signal-callers. Our own top-dog, Chris Trapasso, wrote that Allen is the best player in the NFL before that ESPN piece published. Any discussion of the backup quarterback spot, then, is tainted a bit with the knowledge that none of us want to see that backup in the game for an extended period of time. Whether we’re talking about Case Keenum , Mitchell Trubisky , Matt Barkley , or the subject of today’s edition of “91 players in 91 days,” we know that the backup quarterback is nowhere near as good as the starting quarterback. _____________________________________________________________________________ Name: Kyle Allen Number: 11 Position: QB Height/Weight: 6’3” 210 lbs. Age: 30 (31 on 3/8/2027) Experience/Draft: 8; signed with the Carolina Panthers following the 2018 NFL Draft College: Houston Acquired: Signed with Bills on 3/12/2026 Financial situation (per Spotrac): Allen signed a two-year deal worth $4.1 million overall this spring. For the 2026 season, his cap hit if he makes the 53-man roster is $1.9 million. If he’s released, the Bills will carry a dead cap charge of $1.8 million this season. 2025 Recap: Allen spent last year with the Detroit Lions as the backup to Jared Goff . He played just sixteen offensive snaps in the regular season, throwing two incomplete passes and kneeling three times for -3 rushing yards. He had plenty of action in the preseason, though, completing 79.5% of his pass attempts (35-of-44) for 401 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He rushed five times for 16 yards, as well. Positional outlook: Allen is one of three quarterbacks on the current roster. Josh Allen and Shane Buechele are the others. 2026 Offseason: Allen is healthy and he participated in offseason workouts. He’s likely to see lots of action in the preseason. 2026 Season outlook: In some places, the starting quarterback is weak enough where fans and pundits clamor for the backup quarterback to take the field. With the Bills, it’s the exact opposite: The starting quarterback is elite, so absolutely no one hopes that the backup sees a snap that doesn’t involve garbage-time kneel-downs this season. If Kyle Allen does have to play for an extended time, it likely spells curtains for the Bills. He hasn’t had any extended playing ime in the NFL since the 2022 season when he started two games for the Houston Texans . He was mildly successful in his one season starting with the Carolina Panthers, throwing 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 13 games back in 2019, but let’s be realistic here: Josh Allen is one of one. Kyle Allen, while he might be a great locker room guy and a serviceable veteran to hold the clipboard on Sundays, isn’t the man we want taking snaps. With all of that said, Allen is worlds better than Shane Buechele, the only other person vying for a role on the sidelines on Sundays. Kyle Allen will be Josh Allen’s backup this season

2026 Buffalo Bills Fantasy Preview: Can Joe Brady put them over the top?
The Bills are feeling the pressure of becoming another one of sports’ great also-rans. There is one team in the NFL that has won more games than the Bills over the last decade. Their .640 winning percentage and 105-59 record trails only the Chiefs since 2016. However, the Chiefs have five Super Bowl appearances and four wins in that span, and the Bills have none of either. Can a new leader at the helm and two new offensive weapons on the perimeter help get the Bills the title that has eluded them? Points per game: 28.3 (4th) Total yards per game: 376.3 (4th) Plays per game: 63.6 (28th) Dropbacks per game: 37.1 (23rd) Dropback EPA per play: 0.23 (4th) Designed rush attempts per game: 29.8 (2nd) Rush EPA per play: 0.04 (2nd) Perhaps feeling the pressure to do something different to get over the hump, the team fired longtime head coach Sean McDermott in the offseason and turned the reins over to his offensive coordinator, Joe Brady. At 36 years old, Brady is now the youngest head coach in the NFL and will be thrown right into one of the most high-pressure jobs in the league. Josh Allen is now 30 years old (and a new father), and the Bills are feeling the heat to maximize their potential while their quarterback can still perform the athletic feats that have made him one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Can Brady be the young voice that gets them over the top? QB: Josh Allen, Kyle Allen WR: DJ Moore , Keon Coleman WR: Khalil Shakir , Skyler Bell WR: Joshua Palmer , Trent Sherfield TE: Dalton Kincaid , Dawson Knox , Jackson Hawes As with everything in the Bills’ offense, the passing game discussions begin and end with Josh Allen . The 2024 NFL MVP had another good season, completing 319-of-460 passes (69.3 percent) for 3,668 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also added another 579 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns on the ground, becoming the franchise’s leader in rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns. Yet, despite that, he also threw for his fewest yards since 2019 and averaged a career-low 7.1 yards per target. In fact, a career-high 65 percent of his attempts traveled fewer than 10 yards downfield, so his career-high 69.3 percent completion rate was more because of how short Buffalo had to design its passing game. With Brady now calling plays for his own offense and not to fit the balanced style that McDermott favored, it makes sense that we would see the offense try to push the ball down the field more. However, a higher average depth of target will likely mean that the completion rate takes a hit, and the interception numbers could climb back up around 14-15. Still, that could be worth the tradeoff if we get back to a 4,000 passing yard and 30 passing touchdown season. Of course, getting Allen weapons has also been a big conversation. Last season, the Bills didn’t have one wide receiver who surpassed 750 yards. Keon Coleman failed to take a step forward in his second season. Veteran Curtis Samuel and Josh Palmer battled injuries all year, and Khalil Shakir was forced into a role as a YAC monster. So what did the Bills do in the offseason? They brought in Pete Carmichael, who spent the majority of his coaching career coaching one of the most productive passing attacks in NFL history with Drew Brees in New Orleans , and traded a second-round pick to acquire DJ Moore . Now, Moore only had 50 receptions for 682 yards and six touchdowns in 2025 with the Bears, but that was a team that was moving towards featuring young players like Rome Odunze , Luther Burden III , and Colston Loveland . When Brady was the Panthers’ offensive coordinator in 2020, he led the first offense in franchise history with four different players who had over 1,000 scrimmage yards, including Moore, who led the team with 1,215. Moore won’t need to be that player in Buffalo, but he can still be an outside threat that can make defenses pay if they leave him in single coverage. Comparing DJ Moore and A.J. Brown on the field
Earlier today, I compared the draft-pick cost for the Bills and Patriots to acquire DJ Moore and A.J. Brown respectively via trades this offseason. Now, I’ll be stacking Brown and Moore against each other as receivers on the field. In the draft-pick piece, I labeled Moore as “a half-tier below” Brown for the entirety of the time they’ve spent together in the NFL (since 2019). Of course, there’s no such thing as definitive, universally accepted quality tiers at any position in the NFL, so I wanted to provide you with everything imaginable to compare and contrast these now division rival receivers. A few of these statistics were featured in the original article, but I’ve added one metric and put them all into a table for convenience: (mtf = missed tackles forced, ctc = contested-catch, and fd = first down) That feels like Moore is a “half-tier” behind Brown, doesn’t it? Now, I am not the world’s biggest Jalen Hurts advocate, yet there’s no mistaking that Brown has had better quarterbacks throwing him the football to date in the NFL than Moore has — revitalized Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee and Hurts in Philadelphia . Compare that to Moore, who, as a rookie caught most of his passes from 29-year-old Cam Newton . The next year, Kyle Allen started 12 games for Carolina. Then, 2020 was Year 1 with Joe Brady as the Panthers OC, and Teddy Bridgewater was Carolina’s starter. In 2021, 11 starts for Sam Darnold . In 2022, the Matt Rhule Panthers rolled out a triumvirate of passers — Baker Mayfield , P.J. Walker , and Darnold. Of course, Moore then was traded to the Chicago Bears, and went for over 1,300 yards with Justin Fields throwing him the football before back-to-back seasons with Caleb Williams at the helm. It’s impossible to quantify the impact quarterback play has had on these two receivers, yet is nonetheless worth mentioning. Regarding Brown and Moore’s play against man coverage — which of course has been a major bugaboo for the Bills receivers lately: Since 2022, Moore saw 479 targets in the regular season. Brown received 521. When it comes to size, Moore and Brown are two strapping wideouts. Brown is lsted at 6’1” and 226 pounds. Moore is listed at 6’0” and 213. And they’re very comparable athletes. There’s no way to know much the athleticism has changed for these two since they’ve been in the NFL, but here is the side-by-side of their pre-draft workout figures: Reputation-wise, Brown is clearly ahead of Moore. He has three Second-Team All-Pro distinctions that he earned after the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons. Moore doesn’t have any. Brown has a Super Bowl ring, but of course, despite their exponentially increasing value to the NFL game, “WR Winz” are not really a thing. And it’s not specifically Moore’s fault he just made his playoff debut last season with the Bears. He did have 11 receptions for 116 yards and two scores on 16 targets in those two postseason contests. Moore and Brown are less than three months apart in age, with similar builds, athleticism, and play styles. They rock post-catch, win vs. man coverage, and are reliable reeling in the football in traffic. Individually, they’ve had similar productivity to date, with Brown accumulating more volume on better teams with better quarterbacks. And because they were injected into what should be a heated, tightly contested AFC East rivalry between Super Bowl contenders, from now on, it will be difficult to mention one receiver without quickly discussing the other

My first 53-man projection of the 2026 season is here, fellow rumblers. Let me be upfront: this is a way-too-early look, before a single preseason snap has been played and before training camp opens in late July. Things will change. That’s precisely what makes this exercise worth doing. What I can tell you right now is that Brandon Beane built this roster with more genuine depth than the Bills have had in years — particularly along the defensive front — and that identifying the final ten roster spots is legitimately difficult. The unquestioned best player on this team, an MVP-level quarterback even when you feel like he could’ve been playing better, and the primary reason this franchise is among the contenders every year. The system around him changes — Joe Brady is now the head coach, not the offensive coordinator, and the offense should look and feel different in his year one with full command — but the foundation is unchanged. What has changed from last year is the backup. I’m going with two quarterbacks and dropping Buechele to the practice squad. Kyle Allen, signed as a free agent in March, gets the job. Buechele signed a reserve/futures deal and has been around this organization long enough to be an effective scout team option — that’s a practice squad role, not a 53-man role. That roster spot makes a difference somewhere else on this roster. Cut: Shane Buechele Starters : James Cook, Jackson Acker (FB) Backups: Ty Johnson, Ray Davis Analysis: Cook has established himself as one of the league’s more dynamic weapons. The Buffalo Bills have signed quarterback Kyle Allen to a two-year, $4.1 million deal that is worth up to $6.1 million, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. Allen most recently backed up Jared Goff in Detroit, and now he'll join Buffalo to back up his close friend, Josh Allen. The 29-year-old instantly slots into the No. 2 role on the depth chart after the Bills watched Mitch Trubisky depart for the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Buffalo will hope that Josh Allen stays healthy for all of 2026, but if he needs to miss any time, they'll feel comfortable about plugging Kyle Allen into the offensive system.
