Cowboys sign QB Joe Milton to practice squad
The Cowboys wanted Joe Milton back on the practice squad, and on Wednesday, they made that happen. The team announced it has signed the quarterback. He will serve as the third quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Sam Howell, who are on the 53-player roster. Howell beat out Milton for the backup job to Prescott. Milton served as the No. 2 last season. In three preseason games, Milton completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He added 12 carries for 14 yards and a rushing touchdown. The Cowboys traded a fifth-round pick to New England for Milton in the 2025 offseason, and he served as Prescott’s backup last season

Cowboys backup QB competition "neck and neck" heading into preseason finale
The Cowboys aren’t ready to settle on a backup quarterback yet. Sam Howell started their first preseason game with Joe Milton playing the second half and the two quarterbacks switched roles against the Cardinals last Saturday. On Monday, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Milton has “performed beautifully in both games” and that Howell has “made a lot of plays too” while suggesting things remain too close to call. “If you would just take the training camp competition , it’s probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead,” Schottenheimer said, via the team’s website. “That’s why we actually started Sam in the first game against Seattle. But Joe’s put together two really good performances, and this will be another fun week for them to keep battling.” The Cowboys would prefer not to use either quarterback for any meaningful snaps during the regular season, but Dak Prescott’s history and the league’s general history suggests that might not be the case. That will make the competition a focal point heading into the August 30 cut to 53 players

Joe Milton has strong game, but Cowboys backup QB competition
The Cowboys know Dak Prescott is their starting quarterback, but they still have a decision to make about who will be the next man up on the depth chart. Joe Milton got the start on Saturday against the Cardinals and made a strong case for the job. Milton was 9-of-13 for 179 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Sam Howell, who went 7-of-10 for 65 yards and an interception. Milton also had a good game after replacing Howell in the preseason opener and head coach Brian Schottenheimer credited him with “two good halves” on Saturday, but said the competition remains open. “This is long from over ,” Schottenheimer said. “We’re going back to Frisco, thankfully, get a chance to be home and put some more training camp days in. You’ve got to give Joe his credit, he’s played really well the past two games, but we have a lot of confidence in Sam as well.” Milton joined the Cowboys late in the 2025 preseason and said he feels a “ major difference ” from where he was a year ago. We’ll find out soon whether that difference has been enough for him to secure the backup job

But I would not play that, because there seems to be little chance Smith starts the entire season short of hugely overachieving. Team brass is quite high on fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik out of Clemson, so my guess is that he takes over eventually. Maybe following the team's Week 13 bye when New York is sitting 3-9 or something.
